>What is minimalism?
Minimalism involves taking images and reducing them down to basic colors and removing most features. Most wallpapers will not include shadowing or faces, but this is subjective.

>Requesters
1) Refrain from posting images with incredibly intricate designs, vague or conflicting colors, or undefined edges, these make minimalizing very difficult.
2) If you can, provide the name and/or source for archival purposes.
3) Be patient and make sure to thank the artist!
4) Check if your image hasn't already been done before in the booru: http://min.booru.org/

>Artists
1) Always upload at least 1080p PNGs, try and post transparents too.
2) Look over other people's works! We need good criticism if we want to improve!
3) Watermarks/signatures are not highly necessary.

Anything wrong? Did it on a whim and took me two days.
>>
>>2039787
Couple of things:
- the grey stripe on her hoodie is missing
- since it is without shading, the zipper looks jagged and I would have made it like a smooth-ish line (I'm probably guilty of not doing it this way since hindsight's a bitch). and it doesn't go all the way down
- the white line between the red and purple is quite odd, maybe a layering error?

that and some sharp nodes that should be smooth (finger, some parts of the jacket. rule of thumb - clothes and skin, if ambiguous, are generally smooth rather than sharp)

Other than those few things, not bad. I would appreciate it, if you can find the time and desire, to fix the things you agree could be better.
>>
>>2039400
okay, done. the decision to tuck her right arm behind the jacket is probably one of the smartest things ive done recently. hands really suck to draw in. i spent like 30min on shiki 2pics above (even with a donor image) to get her right hand to look okay and i still dont know if it does

>inb4 hands are shit
>>
>>2042551
Nah man, those hands are fine. The left one might look a bit odd, but that's how fingers work. I've seen (and made) bad ones, this is not bad.

Otherwise, I don't see anything wrong with the rest - the lines are clean and smooth (and sharp where they need to be), no layering errors that I can spot, nor are there transparent seams.
The only thing that caught my eye is her neck, seems a bit bulgy, I usually keep them straight or curve slightly inwards. And another personal thing that I have started doing is shading the neck a darker skin color to accentuate the chin, but that is rather situational as well.

Good job, looks nice!

There's a few of us lurking, at least. These threads popularity waxes and wanes, but as someone who has had these threads on their watch list for three years, it'll swing the other way again.

Sorry about the delay there.
Well, the only thing I can think of is adding the shading, and maybe fiddling with the thickness of the fingers, but that's about it.

Another option, actually, would be replacing it with one in a less-odd position, but that can create other problems, and maybe this particular pose is what you specifically want, then that's not an option.

I mean, personally, I think it looks fine - I can tell it's a more-or-less correct (anatomically) hand. Generally, I resign to the idea that this style simply does not cooperate well with certain poses and hand gestures

It's a lot easier to make simple color changes in the source vector rather than through photoshop. And it's not that hard, even if you've never used vector programs
inkscape is free and doesn't take up much space and the basic functionality is similar to any other image editing program, and if there are any questions we're here to help.

looks pretty nice, with some areas I think could still be improved

Not sure if that was a deliberate style choice on your part, but I like to make skin (and it's shading) more curvy and less pointy as i do in pic related
Also, the armband, which I assume has that shading because it's supposed to be semi-transparent, could be done in various ways, i show one here (which i kinda botched, but the baseline method stands)
There's more parts that I would do slightly differently, but most of it involves more or less the same stuff I already did with the legs. and yes, fingers and toes in minimalist do get weird and cause one to question things, but you did pretty solid there.
I don't know how much of this you've done before, but it seems to me that you've got a good grasp of things, just need to polish your technique a bit
(and the rule of thumb - you can always use less nodes)

Oh yeah, could you please share the name and what's she from, as I'd like it to be added to the archive thing we got going on here http://min.booru.org/

If I want a vector an image what's the estimated time? is 1 hour considered fast or is it considered slow for one image?
>>
>>2061624
It REALLY can depend on what image, but in general juding from my experience with inkscape that would be really fast (but im not great so correct me if im wrong)
>>
>>2061624
oh yeah, like they said, it depends entirely on the image and your experience. The fastest I've done one is about 30 minutes each on these cats: http://min.booru.org/index.php?page=post&s=list&tags=booru

First one I ever did took at least 2,5 - 3 hours (this one: http://min.booru.org/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=208
but a little while ago I remade it from scratch and that took about under half the time: http://min.booru.org/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=1108

Basically, go at a pace that you are comfortable with in order to get the result you want

That looks nice, good job.

As the filename suggests, all i got is minor stuff most people wouldn't even notice. I hope the step by step stuff i did is enough explanation, namely using layering to your advantage, as well as existing tools.

https://imgur.com/a/YWJrG is an album of stuff i've explained to others in the past, might find something useful there, stuff may be repeated, but hey, repetition is the mother of knowledge (not sure if that saying works in english, but should get the point across)

c'mon, mate, you can do that yourself. that's kinda the point of providing these hi-res transparents. just save the png (copying could cause issues on some setups), open up a competent image editing program (there are plenty you can get for free), make a background layer and then add the desired image as another layer on top. some programs seem to automatically fill the transparent pixels - simply put, those are not competent programs
for example, I use GIMP and inkscape for everything image related

>>2063401
For a first time, that is very good, and I only have a few things to mention.
Initially i was going to say something about making skin and clothes be made with as few sharp corner nodes as possible, but it is prevalent enough here that it works as its own sort of style (fewer nodes still always applies)

Second, i noticed a few what seem like layering issues with the head and bow, and neck and collar. What I do to avoid any such overlap problems is start with what is "on top" - basically, which object is not covered in any of its part by any other object. I start with that, then send everything progressively behind it and the ones that follow.
With things that are both "in front" and "behind", sometimes a "patch" works - make the part that is in front, but not fully, then the thing it covers, then finally the part that went behind it, finishing off the full shape, kinda seen in pic related.

lastly, minor thing - consistency, especially with lines and line-like objects, such as the jacket accents

Overall, well done, i get the feeling you may have seen and gone through at least some of the resources, but there's useful stuff in the OP and in this gallery https://imgur.com/a/YWJrG

(and apparently 4chan doesn't want to upload pic related, so it is here instead - https://i.imgur.com/Qve2yHW.png
>>
>>2063620
>>2063401
Oh yeah, the weird hair shading - that can look kinda weird (like in your pic) so it can be best to sometimes flatten the whole part that is in front
(and still giving me upload failed, annoying)
>>
>>2063620
>>2063621
Cheers man, will keep that in mind!
And yea, I can see a lot of the problems that I had when finished. Gonna take that into account when making this next one I've got on my mind.
Bookmarked the links, I'll patch up the image sometime soon.

Some questions!

- do you work with inkscape?

- what did you use for the neck? i checked the svg, it looks like a square with a mask?

- do your have some other svg to share? it's interesting to check directly in an editor how the vectors are made
>>
>>2064179
- Yes. I did try Illustrator but my laptop had some disagreements about actually running it without lag or other issues. I've been using inkscape for about a year-and-a-half now

- The neck is indeed a rectangle and those bone bumps grouped together and clipped to prevent bleeding. Looking at it again, i should have done the whole V part as one clip instead of splitting, but doesn't matter now.

- I can share a fuck-ton, but i'll limit it to just a few:
simple-ish one
https://mega.nz/#!vMUlBSBD!w9HEpZlnT6AxgsxNVr0EuJs-fkKkNtykXnKumbzXiTU

complicated with lots of shading
https://mega.nz/#!fU9wyCYJ!iXuKBL8k7PJYetoJWP99fC_EB-adRA598e0vX7k3Pz4

just a fuckton of parts, almost no complex shading though
https://mega.nz/#!qNVzFY5J!CzVKq09L7MOtOSt1RAswJ5WDD_J6wSTkH3B0NYsH3mk

and this one has some wonky transparent parts worked into it

but i don't get how this works, if i try to ungroup it i get a basic square and those grey shadow, but not ther other shape that 'cut' the square to its final form :/
>>

Ungrouping does break the clip (for whatever coding reason). You have to instead select release clip to get the shape used

Always try to make the shape with as few nodes as possible, only adding more when you absolutely need to.

Also, when using 2 nodes on opposite sides of the same sort of shape (like a line) place them in roughly the same place on both sides so that the handles can be parallel to each other.

Solid work, no glaring errors that I can see. The only thing that stuck out to me technique-wise is the cape studs and the jewel (and round shapes in general) look a bit wobbly, even though they're supposed to be near perfect ellipses - such tools exist to make your life easier and get the right results where needed. As for the step-by-step on the right-side stud, that's not the best method, as it is destructive, but the idea is to start from the intended shape and adjust, overlap or otherwise edit to make it like you want it.
(on a personal note, not a fan of the sword being one block color, I like my metal swords to be shiny and sharp-looking, kinda like here >>2064391 or here >>2047650 )

Neat! really Simple and Clean. I would suggest using smoother, more fluid lines instead of going through every bump in the image would improve it a bunch (zooming out is a great way to do so).
there's a nice balance of purples and pinks, i can see them even in thumbnail size tho I'd suggest using the same white color all throughout the wallpaper instead of doing 3 different values for each piece of white, try to minimize the color pallete too!
I'd say dont worry too much about it tho, its nice as-is, just have have this suggestion in the back of your mind next time and you will be fine

There's alot of things wrong with this. I feel like you might have rushed this one.

Starting from the bottom: heel and shoe end prematurely before reaching the edge. Bend at the shoetip is too pronounced, just make it one straight curve. Knee shading looks fine on the original but not here so just delete it. Fingers are awful, they looked malformed. Check the original picture again, that skinny finger shouldn't be isolated and use less nodes and more curves the avoid vertices on the fingers. You missed the entire length of the main bang that goes past the face and over the hand. You connected the hand to the face too early, so there's a noticeable black jut. You're missing some hairtips and the change of direction on the bangs needs to be smoother so that there's not vertices. Best to just ignore those details and just smooth it over the best you can, some things don't translate 100% to the vector. Lastly in the upper right there's a gap that shouldn't be there. The lineart on this one a little sketchy but everything inside should be considered as such. Dedicate yourself to figuring out which line path you want to follow and stick to it for the whole vector.

Looking better. The shading on the arm is not in line with the edge of the arm. Also the finger is still not quite fixed. In the original it's basically just one long curve, not two lines put together. With enough rotation you should be able to match the curve. Use both handles after your set down your node instead of just the one.

Reference the handles and nodes here, step 4 I think. Remember, less nodes more handles.

That's really cool what you did with the different blue and orange outlines.

Thoughts on using color quantization with K-means clustering to create minimals? There's a lot of control in the process, for example by manually choosing how many colors you want to come out (k), and by choosing which colors get preserved (choosing the centers).

I can see some use for that in general, but at a glance it seems limited to what is in and the quality of the source image. I'm sure some will make amazing things, but personally I like the scalability and ability to adjust everything that comes from working with vectors (especially given the "quality" of some of the requested source images would likely not work well with such an algorithm (i.e. blurry lines, gradiant/fading colors, unclear shapes, etc))

It looks like you might have some seam issues (but that might be my phone) and I think the hands could use some reimagining. I wish I could offer helpful suggestions but I'm sure Minimal Lord Carionto senpai will help there. This looks really great overall to my eyes, though! Very nice job, anon.

A couple of things, as you have done well and the result is solid.
use as few nodes as possible to get a smoother and cleaner look (if that's what you want to go for) and only use the handles that you need (see pic related)

https://imgur.com/a/YWJrG
the first image in this gallery of examples and explanations should cover how to avoid the transparent seams, as was mentioned above

overall, good job, hope to see more of your work

I changed the hands around so they looks a little more like a set of hands.
Also I found out that the seam issue came from me using the export option to render my vectors when i should have been using save for web, so I think that issue should be fixed now.

alright, not too bad, but plenty room for improvement.
- for round objects like goggles, eyes, buttons, etc., use the ellipsis tool, it's faster and looks smoother
- layer objects over one another to prevent transparent seams, and use clips and masks for parts that have multiple colors, such as shading
- use strokes only when you know the effect you want to get with them, otherwise use fills and tapered ends
- as few nodes and handles as possible. seems like you know to do this most of the time, but appear to slip at times
- the gloves look fucked, i think i know what you intended there, but the execution is messy, again, use tapered fills or clipped shading to show individual fingers, kinda like here http://min.booru.org/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=1174

other than all that, glad to see people returning, hopefully this is helpful

Finally pulled myself together and fixed this crap. I don't know if this counts as minimalism due to the increased amount of detail, but here it is anyways. Still gotta do that background when I figure out what it's gonna be like.
