Just go ahead and try, in any case, you can just set your shell back to explorer if you had enough of it!

Are there any good themes for Windows 10 that support Glass8? Only one I found was this one called Glass Onion https://niivu.deviantart.com/art/Glass-Onion-686018029

Actually is there another place than Deviantart that has Windows 10 themes? That place is riddled with themes by CleoDesktop with free versions hidden between a million questionable ad's.

As of right now, there's a lot more functionality to add before buttons, and I didn't plan to add them anyway because I don't like to use mouse for anything other than move/resize.
however, the way i implement titlebars mean buttons would be a very easy addition to the source code for someone who wants them.

the arrows are in place of the reply hiding buttons, if I hide the buttons then the arrows show up.

also you can fiddle with the .js to change from the backlink arrow to the bubble but there's not much documentation on how to use your own custom svg and I know little about css/js so I was looking for a more detailed explanation.

comfy mac tips:

required:
install iTerm2 (look up how to recompile with padding and rounded edges)
install homebrew even if you don't into programming, it's useful for updating software
install a browser that isn't safari

top/menu bar (if you don't just hide it):
bitbar lets you put custom text from script output onto the bar
Bartender lets you hide menu bar icons, get a cracked copy
there's a program called Übersicht I think that lets you re implement the menu bar overlayed on the desktop as widgets but it's literally a web browser so I avoid it

video and media:
install IINA
if you don't stream music then setup ncmpcpp + mpd for terminal music

window managers:
chunkwm is a more unixy config WM with good features
Amethyst has a little bar icon and handy config gui but fewer tiling modes and features
windows kinda snap to each other so manually tiling is possible too

one of the comfiest thing about OSX is that GUIs are scriptable with AppleScript, even if it's the worst language since JS
I used it to write a """theming""" script that changes wallpapers, system dark/light mode, and terminal theme on the fly
>>
>>2061032
>>2060909
Good advice, here's some other stuff:

Install IceFloor, a frontend for the firewall pf (openbsd software) which is shipped with macOS. It's amazing.

Textual is the greatest IRC client ever made, it costs money unless you build it yourself, instructions are here: https://blog.vortigaunt.net/how-to-compile-textual-in-2017/

iTunes is amazing and integrated really well into the macOS environment, especially if you use Apple Music. Give it a shot.

Terminal.app works fine most of the time compared to iTerm2's bloat, and it's not written by someone who accidentally leaked a ton of users passwords over http to their DNS servers. It's what I use.

Macports is also better than homebrew if you're a programmer/have more intricate library/program needs, especially with X11. Homebrew is better if you're inexperienced.

Safari is a great browser, I use it for uni/work/netflix and Firefox for the rest of my internet needs.

Also join the macOS discord
>>
>>2061033
thanks for adding good points, I've been thinking of throwing together a ricing/application guide for macOS in the style of the W7 and W10 ones, especially since there's lots of good foss software for mac but sometimes it gets drowned out among the $30 App Store trash

>safari
I used safari for quite a while but got sick of it being selectively sluggish on certain sites, although I miss the webkit css selectors

also could you hmu with a macOS discord link pls

Couple of things: First this is pretty hacked together, so don't judge me. Second is that the colors are bound to my .Xresources colors. You'll want to investigate and change that. Third, this assumes you have siji glyph fonts and tamzen bitmap fonts installed. You can change that or install the fonts.

"Proper ricing" makes shit borderline unusable. I wouldn't be surprised if half of the people in the thread set it up just to take a screenshot and then revert back so they can use their computers. 10/10 for aesthetic looking setup without going the minimalist autism route.

>>2061527
Here you go, man.
>>2061530
Regrettably many UI designers have your mentality in thinking that featureless and empty UI is more aesthetic than than one with many buttons and switches. There is a gross misunderstanding of minimalism as a design language that makes modern UIs insufferable.

Reason I don't do ricing for the most part is precisely because it negatively impacts workflow ya big dummy. If it didn't, I'd have useless terminals everywhere, along with some music player with no switches and esoteric keyboard shortcuts, and other freetard hipster autistic shit that those pretend hackers post all the time to hide the fact that they don't have a clue what to do with GNU/Linux.
>>
>>2061539
you're mistaken to think that the lack of buttons and a bloated UI equals lack of functionality. most minimal skins for specific softwares (like music players and whatnot) functions through the use of keyboard shortcuts which is way more practical and fast.

minimal desktops done right will always be functional at the user level because (most of the time) they'll know what they're doing.
>>
>>2061544
if you want only efficiency then having any ui at all is dumb. cli and keyboard shortcuts are faster in every way if you know them all. Not like it matters cause efficiency is only being used as a excuse cause some people are too lazy to rice anything so they try to justify that their desktop is better cause it's more "efficient".
also what do you mean by
>no desktop manager
what is a desktop manager? do you mean a DE? cause they are almost always unneeded
>>
>>2061548
> what is a desktop manager? do you mean a DE? cause they are almost always unneeded
I'm fairly sure that a program that manages icons on the desktop (often built into the file manager) is called a desktop manager.
Am I mistaken?
>>
>>2060599
hey op you think you can give me that wallpaper?
>>
>>2061553
sort of. it's called a desktop environment.
>>
>>2061556
No it isn't. A desktop environment is a bundle of programs made to work together as a complete GUI environment. That's why it's called a desktop ___environment___.
What I'm talking about is programs like idesk. https://wiki.debian.org/idesk
A simple program managing icons on the desktop and nothing more.
>>

So you can have icons. On you desktop. That's what they are for.
>>
>>2061564
Typical ricing designs don't allow for them, because the icons would look like a Kenyan basketball player in a Japanese geisha tea house, so the potential of the desktop is wasted.

Nobody except for "people" who are forced to use Linux (I can't imagine anyone using it voluntarily) care about that. There is literally no reason to use Linux or any other CIA-run operation. They're just pleb filters.

Which is a pile of inconsistent garbage, so there really is no justifiable reason to use lincux at all.

Except maybe for much simpler customization, having control over your computer and freedom of choice?
Who cares about the foot eater, he scoffs at the mention of mainstream distros because they all allow using proprietary software.
> Not him
I'm 99% certain you are him.
>>

>zero reason to use loonix other than for a server machine.
I am my own reason.
>>
>>2061697
>simpler customization
Highly debatable. Windows may sometimes require third party software or patches that allow custom .msstyles files to be applied, but beyond that everything is a click away. Unlike in loonix where you have to edit conf files.

>having control over your computer and freedom of choice?
Freedom is a moot point when you have to micromanage so much shit compared to Windows, running into hardware incompatibilities and so on. Not to mention the lack of linux versions of (or alternatives to) mainstream productivity software. Computing freedom in that sense sacrifices your free time and your ability to be productive to your fullest potential, something you guys never take into account when talking about freedom.

In what way exactly does having GNU trash on your machine accomplish that? You aren't making much sense here.
>>
>>2061704
> everything is a click away. Unlike in loonix where you have to edit conf files.
For me customizing windows has always been registry fuckery and clicking through dozens of GUI elements than never fucking have the options I need.
And "loonix" config files are always right there, in /etc or ~/.config. They are also usually well-commented or have man pages / websites, unlike incomprehencible strings of letters and numbers in the registry.
> you have to micromanage so much shit compared to Windows
Depends on the distro.
> lack of linux versions of (or alternatives to) mainstream productivity software
It's changing. Also, blame the developers not the system.
> Computing freedom in that sense sacrifices your free time and your ability to be productive to your fullest potential
Depends on what you do. Linux is inherently programmer-oriented. Most development tools work out of the box and require less setting up than on Windows, unless the company that makes them hates / doesn't give a fuck about Linux (talking about you, NV*DIA).

Editing .conf files in a single directory like /etc/ makes much more sense than opening a window, typing in, control panel, opening some menu there, advanced options, move this slider, popup "are you sure you want to do x?". Windows is fucking cancer. All the customization shit feels like it's glued on, all other window managers are buggy pieces of shit, not to mention terrible perfomance. The default shell is horrible too. There is no reason to use wangblows expect for muh vidya or if your job requires it.

The IT perspective VS the theoretical perspective.
You can make an uncompressed 10000x10000 PNG image with one 1-byte number. From your computer's point of view the picture is over 3*10^8 bytes in size, but from a mathematician's point of view it's just 1 byte of information.

there isn't a single icon pack in the world that will replace ALL the icons, and if you don't replace them all - why bother

there isn't a firefox theme that will match ALL the websites you gonna visit, and you can't make a css for every single one of them - so why bother

same applies to "heavy" ricing in general - you just can't make every single program look the way you want so it doesn't break the aesthetics that your rice is trying to achieve. Meaning you have to either pretend that those inconsitencies don't exist, like the majority of screenshots here showing nothing but terminals and irrevelant shit, or you go full autism and start actually butchering the usability of your system - first step being installing a tiling WM just because it's what ricers use, and not because it's the kind of interface that you have been used for for the last 30 years.

a proper rice should just be a subtle enhancement and personalisation of defaults ( since that's what software developers design their software according to ), it's easy to make, easy to maintain and looks consistent with the rest of the UI. Meanwhile "heavy" rice is the neverending cycle of autism over icon packs, color schemes, css themes, taskbars and dockbars and whatnot. It's almost like car-tuning

was it your dad who integrated the linux kernel into a full fetched OS under the GPL licence when no other "free" (freedom not price) OS existed.
Do some research you before you call stuff garbage. GNU GNL licencing is the biggest contribution of GNU. Not the actual programs.
If not for them, free software would've never been promoted.

I mean, first of all firefox is memeware and you can absolutely make a css for all of the sites you visit if that's something that really matters to you, however this is a desktop customization thread, not a userscript thread.

>you just can't make every single program look the way you want so it doesn't break the aesthetics that your rice is trying to achieve.
yes you can, you fucking idiot lmfao

>installing a tiling WM just because it's what ricers use
I tile because I like to have sublime and vivaldi open at the same time, and I have a small resolution, I float when I need to, and I tile when I need to. I use altdrag to manage window movement when floating, and if you can't understand how tiling is more efficient then I literally cannot help your fucking sperg fits.
