>What are startpages?
Startpages (in the context of this thread) are locally hosted webpages (as in, the files are on your computer - not a server somewhere) that serve as the homepage or new tab page for a browser. They generally contain some number of links to frequently visited sites as the main element; search bars, clocks, calendars and other embedded items are usually added as secondary elements.

>What browser are you using?
If you can't tell what browser it is, it's probably Firefox, you can theme Firefox using Stylish and finding themes on the Firefox tag of Userstyles.
Otherwise if you won't upgrade there's always Chrome, you can ~slightly~ customize it using Chrome Theme Maker.

There's an extension for Firefox (and maybe chrome) called Stylus. It's a fork of Stylish right before they started collecting user data.

http://add0n.com/stylus.html
>>
>>6939347
I've tried to give duck duck go multiple tries. it can never find the websites I want. google might be a bot net but it's one I'm stuck with

it's a mess but here you go

Big no-no and makes it look messy as fuck. You need another way of dividing your content.
>>
>>6939246
That hamburger menu on FF is absolute ass. It's literally squeezed in there.

As for the Google theme, it's alright. The only problem upkeeping something like this is you gotta know ALL of what Google pops up with specific results. Like those random cards that will sometimes be on the left, the they'll be above the search results, sometimes they wont have just works, but icons, etc.
>>
>>6939502
yeah I don't like it but I'm stuck with it for now. the original extension I used to move the menu doesn't exist anymore so I'm stuck using this one that forces me to use the ugly hamburger menu. if there's a way to edit it I dont know it
>>

Wow, I've always used Stylish because I really don't care for "collecting data" stuff, but Stylus actually has more features from what I can tell. Thanks. :)

>>6939632

No problem. Just be warned you're most likely not going to be able to theme the actual browser as that functionality is being removed from Firefox with the switch to webextensions. At the release of Firefox v57, all XUL based extensions will be deprecated and no longer work. Meaning, If you wanna rice firefox UI after version 57, you're gonna have to either stay on an earlier version, or use a different XUL based fork (Like Palemoon or waterfox or something)

That last part is specifically for you >>6939836, you're gonna have to figure out something to do if you still want those features.

Using windows 8.1. If you're on windows 7 it'll be easier since there is already aero glass, plus there are a lot of visual style available. If you're using windows 10, it'll be more difficult, but there are decent visual style available.

In the case you want to create your own visual style (based on an already existing one of course), you'll have to use Vista Style Builder, it'll allow you to tweak a lot of stuff.

Titlebar is hidden with an ahk script. You could also disable it in firefox itself via hamburger -> customize then clicking titlebar but that would require further editing of the css. In your case everything to the right of tabs would be grey because in the theme it's left alone and styled by windows, allowing creator of script to have it transparent. In my case it would be black.

As for the search that was my bad. Missed that you said pygmalion. Yeah it's hidden. Creator uses Ctrl+F / F3 for search. Personally I use / for quickfind.
>>
>>6947518
Okay so, if I understood correctly, everything from the upper right side is defined by the windows theme, allowing the creator having it transparent. And I can edit the css to remove totally the toolbar, right?

or whatever regexp allows both. I'm assuming the warning triangle is because you allow loading of shit that's not https i.e. standard banner since it's on the entire domain.

a proper setup with the script as-is would show no banner.

as for titles it's still probably the font.

like this anon >>6948939 said, try to set others pictures (host them on imgur for example), and see if the problem remains. If that's the case, then simply delete the banner that was set for every board (or remove the !important if there is one).

As for the title, did you keep the same settings as I do ? Because some stuff like auto-hide header or header not fixed can fucked up the script, I forgot to include them.

Anyway, I decided to rewrite all my current script because the syntax is pretty meh, plus there are a lot of issues since most of the sites add/remove/change elements in their code source. Here a rewrite of Pygmalion, Pygmalion-Z (not very original I know), tell me what you think of it.

Can anyone help me with my firefox CSS? I'm a dumbass noob and modified some CSS I got from someone's dotfiles. It's nearly where I want it to be but I have two problems. There's this white line under my tab bar at all times that I can't get rid of, and the "Connecting" text on a tab when loading a new page is aligned lower than the standard text. You can see both in the pic.
Here's my CSS. I know it's a mess. https://pastebin.com/mk9bt3UD

First off, you guys are the best. The regex tweak fixed the banners. As for the titles, I found what I assume is the details for the titles in the 4chan CSS and changed it to fonts that I have installed, Roboto and KFHimaji. I have the settings exactly as imported from the instructions. The header is set fixed without auto-hide.

>>
>>6949294
thank you so much! the settings are actually saved to a sql database, which i use because i already mess around with web stuff a lot and have a wamp stack on my laptop. i've been thinking about replacing the method of saving the settings to the database with a cookie to make it more portable, but since i'm the only one using it, i don't really know if it'd be worth it.
i'm still only halfway through finishing the pages, and i don't have some of the stuff working (the weather location setting does nothing, the edit categories page is broken, etc), so i'd rather not share it yet, since it's unfinished and rather messy. sorry to dissapoint, anon.

Since you're on Google Chrome (if I'm not mistaken), you have to click 'import from moilla' and paste the script in the popped window.

If it doesn't solve anything, try to reinstall 4chanX and OneeChan. Also, don't forget to download the font used.

to blur the background of elements, i set a ::before using the same image, and blur that.
here's the css i used (with modified class names): https://pastebin.com/b4Z5Uwjw (the filter stuff can be changed depending on how subtle you want the image to be. i find that adding grayscale(10%) helps make white text a little more readable on bright backgrounds)

making the blur change along with the background image requires some hacky javascript, though.
basically, i have a <span id="something"></span>, and use js to set the span's content to '<style>.thing_to_blur_background_of::before{background:url(' + bgimg + ') 0 / cover fixed;}</style>
i don't think it's possible to style pseudoelements with javascript, so this is the only way i've managed to make it work.

of course, if you're only using one image all the time, you don't need to worry about that.
>>
>>6949816
thanks! it's pretty much a constant work in progress, just to give me something to do. i've had a lot of fun adding things like the gradient progress bar at the top of the page! i might post my progress with the page every now and then in these threads, and i might even be able to get the code up to a standard i'm happy with! right now, it's really dependant on the server it's running on, and refers to a bunch of other files scattered about, so i probably couldn't even provide code if i wanted to, but i'm definitely aiming to fix that. i've never used github before, but i'll probably put it there when it's eventually done

Is it possible to make a webpage have a literal transparent background, like it shows what is on my desktop at that moment? It sounds odd, but my desktop is blank with multiple randomly assigned animated backgrounds. I want that background transferred to the homepage. It can't exactly be put into the page though, as I said it is random, unless I start getting really fuck with Windows itself.

>>
>>6950533
If you make the back ground of the html file transparent you'll get a white page, so you have to make the window transparent. If you are on linux i think it's easy, if you are not, then it's not that easy.
>>
>>6950563
Try making the picture go over the text when expanding, instead of the text follow the picture. I think i'll look nice.

So I've started making a startpage to get better acquainted with html, css, and whatnot. This is what I've come up with so far, but I don't really have any ideas for the blank space under the search bar. Anyone have any suggestions?

Was thinking maybe a news feed or something but I'm not sure.
>>
This is probably a long shot, but I remember seeing (and subsequently using) a very brightly colored custom startpage (like white, red and orange). It had a main banner with (I think) the time or the date or something with four squares beneath it that were different categories, with different links.

I remember it being slightly off-centered which is one of the things I changed to fit my using it. Would love to find the source for that one again.

>>
>>6951483
You can do it using HTML style attributes or using CSS. I'd suggest the latter. You'd do it like so:

body {
font-family: Roboto;
}

I'd really suggest learning CSS and HTML if you are interested in startpages.

i've been adding crudely written javascript to enhance my userstyles for years now, it's good practice for me and makes my styles achieve things that can't be done with pure css (check my repos)

you should look into removing/blocking the default stylesheets through an adblocker or removing them through a userscript and starting from scratch
you learn a lot about how css works and it saves you having to !important everything
