Why is it that hardly anyone knows how to make a good horror movie these days? There have only been a handful of films since the 90s that can compare to the 80s, let alone the older classics.

probably because we only remember the good one from back in the day, and there are far more movies coming out these days overall, and shitty horror movies are cheap to make

>probably because we only remember the good one from back in the day
That doesn't apply to me, actually. I'm 30, but my mom was very religious so she was really strict about what I could and couldn't watch (for some reason she didn't mind the old Universal monster films). As a result most horror movies that people saw growing up I didn't see until I was in my 20s, or it was the campy stuff on MST3K.
>there are far more movies coming out these days overall
That, however, is a good point. Studios need more movies to fill up all those timeslots and screens in all the megaplex chains. God I fucking hate megaplex theaters, they're always overpriced and they lack the charm of an older theater. I'm glad there's still an older one in my town. One of these days I need to go to a drive-thru, but the nearest one is an hour away from me.

Oh yes, nostalgia is also a factor for most people, but I meant more that that period now has an established canon of sorts, so that when people discuss '80s horror movies everybody only talks about the good ones. Nobody remembers, watches or discusses the 'Worry Dolls' of the 80's anymore. Whereas with contemporary horror you are witnessing all these shitty ones coming out all the time.

My local cinema is also drab and increasingly expensive. There's a new artsy one now which is slightly cheaper but it's also terribly uncomfortable and uncozy. Lately, I just watch everything at home a few months later, sigh. I don't think there's a drive-in anywhere in my entire country, haha.

>I meant more that that period now has an established canon of sorts, so that when people discuss '80s horror movies everybody only talks about the good ones
Ah, I see what you mean. I guess that would put rose tinted glasses on the era, even without nostalgia. I do try to find the lower budgeted ones or the campier ones that are still worth watching, but admittedly even those have reached cult status, like The Stuff or Castle Freak.
>Lately, I just watch everything at home a few months later, sigh.
That's what I do, usually I'll only see one or two movies in theater a year. I was lucky enough to see Shin Godzilla in theater last year, and that was a really fun experience. I guess that is one advantage to having a megaplex, they'll play limited release movies.

This movie is one of my all time favorites. Saw it on TV as a kid, was terrified and fascinated by the weird insect-like ayyliens. But I never knew the name of the film and for years I tried to hunt it down, but the only thing I could remember was vague memories of bug ayys. Wasn't until a few years ago that I finally found out what it was, watched the TV specials and then the color movie.

I didn't care much for it myself. I was a neat idea but I felt it didn't have enough going for for a full length movie and so it became pretty old pretty quick. I know some people really like it, and it has a certain oddball meta charm to it which I can appreciate in theory, but this one just didn't work for me. I preferred Dupieux' Wrong Cops but I'm in the minority on that one (also that one isn't a horror movie).
