>What are startpages?
Startpages (in the context of this thread) are locally hosted webpages (as in, the files are on your computer - not a server somewhere) that serve as the homepage or new tab page for a browser. They generally contain some number of links to frequently visited sites as the main element; search bars, clocks, calendars and other embedded items are usually added as secondary elements.

>What browser are you using?
If you can't tell what browser it is, it's probably Firefox, you can theme Firefox using Stylish and finding themes on the Firefox tag of Userstyles.
Otherwise if you won't upgrade there's always Chrome, you can ~slightly~ customize it using Chrome Theme Maker. Lately, we noticed Vivaldi can can has custom css too.

>>
>>7073721
whoops heres image
>>
>>7073685
I wish I had a good answer.

FF 57+ should get better over time as the API matures but I feel pretty confident saying it will never compare to pre-Quantum in terms of customizability and making everything available to addons.

Palemoon will have to fall behind on security and performance after the ESR cycle rolls over if it wants to keep the old addon model, so I don't see it being a viable solution.

Waterfox is obviously not a solution (it's basically just Firefox with some compile time flags changed).

Pretty much every other browser is based on Chromium so none of those are competing either.
>>
>>7073734
Fuck this sucks
>>
>>7073722
I assume you already know how userChrome works and how to use the web tools, you can google if not. Follow these instructions so you can inspect the browser DOM instead of the webpage: Ctrl-Shift-I -> Gear Icon (Options) -> Header: Advanced Settings -> Check "Enable browser chrome and add-on debugging toolboxes", check "Enable remote debugging" -> Ctrl-Alt-Shift-I -> Allow remote debugging session

You will need to learn some CSS if you don't already know some.

using new tab override is weird, but you'll figure it out. when you select upload local file, there will be a set of instructions right underneath you can follow.

>pic related

download MAMP and then once you open it click on preferences. Under the Start/Stop tab there will be a startpage URL, you can just delete that. Then under the web server tab go ahead and open your homepage as the file and click OK.

Once you've done that you can go back to new tab override and go to the drop down menu and click "custom URL" and enter "http://localhost/". This should load your homepage as a new tab every time.

I know it's a lot of work, but until someone finds something better, this is what I did.

Sorry if the image is really small, idk why it did that.

I'm trying to make an image appear in a container when a certain link is hovered, can I do this in just CSS without JS? I tried giving that link a specific ID like:

<a href="https://4chan.org/a/" target="_blank" id="4a">/a/</a>

and then referencing it like

a:hover#4a .infoButton{
background: url("display2.png") no-repeat;
background-size: contain;
height: 200px;
width: 200px;
}

but i can't seem to get this to work, I've tried a few variations
>>
>>7076292
>>7077294
>>
>>7077627

#4a:hover {
// whatever css rules
}
>>
>>7077743
But that won't affect a separate container/class will it?
>>
>>7077744
no, only the ID 4a

keep in mind that IDs are supposed to be unique, don't go putting an ID on many elements
>>
>>7077744
you can add something after #4a:hover like:

#4a:hover .infoButton {
...
}
>>
>>7077745
Sorry I might not have explained my situation well enough, what I was trying to do is have navigation links for example "4chan.org/a/" and when hovered display the 4chan logo in a separate container

>>7077746

Here's a JSFiddle with the example, when I mouse over the /a/ link I also want the button to change color
>>
>>7077750
https://jsfiddle.net/witudat/r91wv4xx/
>>
>>7077750
>>7077752
you can't select an element that is somewhere else, because css can only go deeper into the tree (CASCADING style sheets)

however, css3 has a sibling selector, you can select an element that is immediately next to another, but not "in a separate container"

https://jsfiddle.net/jrvudj6j/

the only real way of doing it is with javascript. sorry about that.
>>
>>7077763
Thanks! Great example too, I had a feeling I might have to use JS but I try to avoid using it as much as possible and I'm not competent with it at all
>>
>>7077750
>>7077766
Like appearing aside of it? You can try with pseudoclasses you make an empty container put the image on it and give it a padding to appear aside the link, your code would go like:
#4a {
display: inline-block; /* i'd suggest this to give width and height to the link container*/
position: relative;
/*and other values you want to give it*/
}

#4a:before {
content: "";
display: block;
width: xxpx/%; /*try values*/
background: url(your img);
position: absolute;
right: 0; /*right, left, or bottom align your image with the "a" element*/
padding: 0; /*try values*/
z-index: -1;
transition: all .4s;
}

#4a:hover:before {
right: 0; /*try some value to show it aside of your link or on your link*/
}

Don't know if will work mate just make it up right now, but it's the basic to show something before your element you can google "pseudo element before" or look for it on youtube. Good luck
>>

How would I do something in CSS in which the date (in pic related that'd be 12.05.17 (Tue) 15:02:03) is hidden unless I hover over Anonymous, in which it'd look just like pic related?
>>
>>7080311
i dont think that you can do that with css only, you will need js

Would really appreciate some help. Just trying to make a simple home page. Picture related is how I want it, but I'm new to CSS so I'm having trouble centering vertically-horizontally, and setting the margin between the images...

Is there a way to see the changes I make in my 4chan css in real time without having to refresh every time? I want to tweak a bit my color scheme and thought I may have been doing something stupid this whole time.
>>
>>7080516
Talking about the firefox appearance ? If you're on FF57, you'll have to write a userChrome.css file (just Google userChrome and you'll find some documentation about it) : basically, you'll have to put this file on User/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/Profile/[name of profile]/chrome.
If you're on a lower version of FF, just install Stylish, create a new style, and copy/paste the code.
>>
>>7080689
Stylus lets you do that when you save that the file, custom CSS applied by then
>>
>>7073756
Please share how you removed the blue outline. I have the same issue.

>setting the margin between the images
Instead of just #links do
>#links a>img{
margin-right: 20px;}

That should be the thing you wanted.

this startpage thing is cool, I made this from scratch yesterday
The annoying thing is firefox only lets me set a newtab if I put the page in my localhost
I don't how dangerous that would be lol

any way to hide the address bar so I can immediately start typing a search without having to delete the startpage url?
besides, I don't want to see the starpage url anyway

what is the program in the bottom left terminal? does it need X to show thumbnails like this?
>>
>>7081522
its ranger a file manager, in the config you just need to turn the image preview on. Im using URxvt but it works on some other terminals heres a list https://github.com/ranger/ranger/wiki/Image-Previews

Something weird has happened and my Youtube seems to have this icons moved way out of their place, for some reason that I'm unable to figure out myself.
They do nothing when clicked either.
It's really bothering me especially since they are always visible, even when I open some video they'll be on top of the video. They don't move at all, they stay on the same spot when I scroll up and down the page.
I've tried disabling the custom youtube css as well as firefox userchrome. I even tried disabling every single firefox addon and they still persist.
Any ideas?

>>7083207
try disabling all and do shift + F5?

Just switched from a 1366x768 to a 4k display and I can't see shit cap'n

Anyone have a good 4chan X dark skin for 4k or that's good with 4k?
Preferably
>dark like I said
>not super obnoxious
>larger text so I can read without squinting
>if it made comments use more of the page somehow that would be good, I'm fine with long single lines
>>
>>7085792
