LOTR, The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, just Tolkien's stories in general, I have a preference for artwork or wide landscapes but anything is good, I don't have very many, and I have even fewer decent ones, hence the thread but I'll start.

Why was Morgoth such a little in the war of the jewels? When he fought the other Valar at Utunmo there was such great destruction that the Valar didn’t want to go to open war with him a second time for fear that they fuck up middle earth too much. But every time the elves came to him in Angband the supposed greatest of the Valar was always quaking in his boots. The only reason he came out to duel Fingolfin was so his army wouldn’t realize what a cowering bitch he was. Why didn’t he just come out and use his godly power to crush the elves?
>>7431502He did, that's why the Valar decide to intervene and start the War of Wrath, remember? In all seriousness the Silmarillion was written from collections of his notes that were probably never intended to all work together, so maybe Tolkien planned on retconning his power level or weakining him post exile.I also think it's less to do with him being scared, and more to do with him fearing for his own armies, in the first battle, ALL of the orcs are killed, and being the mightiest of the Vala wont help you much if it's just you vs a continent of angry elves, and you are bound to your physical form. But I think it is also canon that he was a massive coward, so there's that.
>>7432183He also did everything in the shadows, didn't he?
>>7432942Yes, but it seems to me that was more out of necessity; he can't take on all the other Vala at once during the years of the Trees, or just walk out of Angband during the siege. He can't really subvert the wills of men and elves as a towering demon-like king, that requires subtlety. I could me missing some part, but it does seem like his goals mostly just require working in the shadows rather than him necessarily preferring it.
