This webm by itself looks like a final project for film school. I've gotten some pretty gruesome facial effects by burning masks and allowing them to partially melt before adding (dis)coloration to them. It looks especially indie with the flare-gun gunshot at the end.

>>1919050
You always lower someone's gun if you're planning to run in front of them, which he did because of the "FUCKING HELP ME GODDAMMIT" coming out of the victim while the shots were being fired.

He avoided physical contact because it had appendages; same reason you instinctively don't try to punch an animal's open mouth. That thing can grab you if you try to touch it.

The other thing is because story.

>>1943049

Are you sure Shub Niggurath wasn't Clark Ashton Smith? A lot of stuff that is called Lovecraftian is actually just from other people in his writing circle. Cthuuga isn't one of his for instance. Neither is Hastur.

He had problems for sure, but let's be honest here, at least he hides them behind a metaphor, most fantasy/sci-fi writers can't even be bothered to do that I'M LOOKING DIRECTLY AT YOU HEINLEIN, NO DON'T LOOK BEHIND YOU AT JOHN RINGO I'LL GET TO HIM IN A MINUTE.
>>

>which fight is this

>>1943405
from one of the trailers, probably where Ebrietas was going to be fought before they changed it
>>
Can some Lovercraftian savvy anon tell me why there is no movies or games with this theme?

I mean, this would make an excelent atmosphere for a game, just like the original Silent Hills did it back in the PSX.
>>
>>1943585

I'm trying to work out where that is in the game. Is it the Cathederal where we fight Vicar Amelia? I think it is.

...that's actually not THAT far away from where you do fight Ebritas, as that fight is geographically behind the altar and down a lift.
>>
>>1943610
Essentially what is known to be "lovecraftian" is the unseen cosmic horror. Something that leads you to madness and ultimately your suicide.
So that means that a horror game with a strong connection to the Mythos would just be centered around a character going around finding clues of madmen whilst going mad himself.
Come to think of it, it actually sounds really nice but then again I'm a Lovecraft fag so who knows.
>>
>>1943954
>>1943610
Also, it shouldn't go unnoted that there already exists a game with a direct focus on the mythos, although it's rather buggy and it hasn't aged particularly well.
Look up Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth if you're interested.
>>
>>1943954
Well, if you think about it, the first Outlast game had this same premisse of the guy going mad at the end just before being killed.

Is doabble, provided the writer/director have full control over the IP so no suit can screw up by taking things out of the game that may be considered "too much".
>>
>>1943961
Agreed. You can definitely push a game that can capture the essence of the stories, and I'm still a firm believer that if someone were to do it right, it would be one of the best horror/thriller experiences ever.

>>
>>1943610
There's a ton of stuff in the same thematic vein, movies and games inspired LOOSELY by Lovecraft and his concept of Cosmicism.
Unfortunately, the attempts at creating direct adaptations of his stories have typically turned out to be quite bad, and now people shy away from even attempting it.
You've probably already watched/played a ton of movies/games that are largely inspired by Lovecraft though. I guarantee it.
>>
>>1944394
Does the player have to hit a specific sequence of notes in that scene? How do you know where to click?

>>
Get shrimp pilled
>>
>>1943610
Because the things that try to do cosmic horror ham fist it so horribly it just turns into generic monster horror because most people haven't read any of his stories and their shallow surface level knowledge of Lovecraft is built through memes and other in-jokes.

>Games
Call of Cthulhu (both the tabletop and video game), Eternal Darkness, Fallen London, Sunless Sea. I also tentatively recommend Bloodborne, but it falls into the same traps mentioned earlier by making all these eldritch horrors interact with and be defeated by the player.

Die Farbe and Event Horizon

>>1945391
>I also tentatively recommend Bloodborne, but it falls into the same traps mentioned earlier by making all these eldritch horrors interact with and be defeated by the player.

Those are just symptoms of the larger problems, yeah you can kill them, but you aren't making things better by doing so. That ship has sailed. It has gone around the world and returned with precious fucking spices. Yeah you can kill the Amygdala in his nightmare, but to what end? His kids wandering about the Cathederal undimensioned and unseen have been sending blood users insane and bestiel for fucking generations. You can kill Rom but all that does is remove the illusion. Sure you can kill Micolash who's the real cause behind this beasthood epidemic, but he's already been dead for years. You can kill his kitbashed dream-elder-brain but they've already created the hybrid child, and you can kill that and it's monstrous wetnurse but things are already fucked beyond repair. Nothing you kill the chalices matter. Nothing you do matters.
The only thing of theoretical worth that you do in the entire game is put the Orphan of Kos out of it's misery.
Then you die. And you start all over again.

Yeah. I think what took me on the last chapter was that he specifically said that there was babys in "that part of the book" and that kind of fucked up.

The other is that no matter what you do, you will end up there. Imagine how fucked you are if there was no escape for anyone and mad god was specially mad at you.

Boy, I would exercise and eat healthy for as long as possible....
>>

Also, ppl would want to become sterile because who in the fuck would want to bring a soul to such eternal inferno like that?

If even little kids are doomed, the best thing to do is to stop having then altogether.
>>
I haven't read any Lovecraft, but I think I get it...
It's basically things that are horrifying, not because "AAAH SPOOKY THING IN TJE DARK TJAT KILLZ U!!!" but because it's usually about things that just aren't right, that don't necessarily obey natural laws, that just don't work the way they should
Is that right? Like, for example, that story on /x/ about a grandpa that went almost went crazy because of something in the attic, it was that in one of the far corners, the walls just didn't line up right, like some sort of origami with space folding in on itself
>>
>>1945643
More or less.
Impossible shapes and forms are also part of the Mythos.

But if I had to say only one thing about the Mythos itself, it wuold be "forbidden knowledge".

Once the character gets a glance of the real universe, usually they go crazy or die.
>>
>>1911996
>If you think it's good, I won't like you.
Oh no, I don't know how I'll cope...
>>
>>1945643
That's a part of it, but the biggest aspect of Lovecraft is the cosmic horror. The realization that there exist entities so far above mankind we look like bacterium in comparison (and there are things so far above them that they are like bacterium in comparison), and who don't necessarily interact with us so much as they just exist nearby. As that other anon said, seeing, or even knowing about these things, can typically drive one mad.

The Colour out of Space is probably the best example of this. The entity arrives, weird shit happens, then it leaves. Nobody involved understood what was going on or why. Or even that the entity was a living thing at all.

It's the perfect story of humans interacting with something so cosmically vast and alien that they can barely perceive it. This is the essence of Lovecraft's horror.
>>
>>1945899

I always liked the Dunwich Horror. Mankind literally only survives because Wilbur Whateley's gun misfires, and that the Miskatonic Univeristies watchdog is a vicious brute that doesn't fuck about.

There have been many movies and games more or less inspired in Lovecraft's writings ("The Thing" is the first one that comes to my mind) but the very essence of Lovecraftian horror makes it not good for movie or game adaption. This doesn't mean the movies aren't good by themselves, many are, but they simply can't convey the spirit of cosmic horror, which is not about the monsters or alien races he described but rather about our insignificance and vastness of the cosmos and all the horrors that possibly lurk there and possibly have lived and live here with us. Lovecraft's horror is about what is not seen, about the despair of little by little realizing one's insignificance in the cosmos and about there being many horrors that could drive you mad if you ever were to see them if you weren't blissfully ignorant and incapable to see.

I know the above did sound a little pedantic but the point is is that the main theme in Lovecraft is not "tentacles, aliens and fishmen lol" but the horror of learning about things that man was not meant to know, of indescribable abominations beyond the understanding of the human mind that you will lose all sanity and possibly die upon mere gazing, of the ephemerality of everything we hold dear including the very human race which is always at the verge of extinction were some unseen forces that we can't comprehend ever going to bother with us (ie: "the moment Cthulhu wakes up we're gone"). The tentacles and stuff is just the little the mind person can make up from seeing those horrors before going mad from contemplating them.

In short, Lovecraft's horror can't be adapted properly in videogames and movies because they are a more visual medium, and his horror is about that which is not seen and we can't understand. That's why text is the ideal medium for his works.

>>
>>1965653
I get it anon.
I just think that giving a good director free pass to make the movie the way he wants it, a Lovercraftian movie is totally doable.

Will be rated R and will probably a niche movie, but I think is doable.

And I get the tentacles part. All a movie like this would need is to give hints of the horror ahead without adressing point blank and let the viewer figure out by itself.

Like when ppl tought that the bombing on Buenos Aires in Starship Troopers was a lame plot device because there was no way an entity would be able to hit earth from the other part of the galaxy with an asteroid that should travel faster than light and somehow slow down just before hitting earth.

Once the spectator realize that was a black flag, that is where the movie becomes good.
>>
>>1967418
>black flag
You mean a false flag?

I'd give it a solid 6/10. Plot was eh, ending wasn't anything to speak of, barely "cosmic horror" until the last ten minutes or so (and even then it's tenuous). But, a pretty fun horror movie with alright acting and amazing lighting, camera work and (most notably) Romero style physical SFX. Heavy makeup and prosthetics make this an enjoyable, if not especially noteworthy, creature feature. But it's only Lovecraftian in name.

It is. Thats where she was in the original trailer.

Another interesting thing that was in a trailer that wasnt in the final game was when you fought the Darkbeast. It was so fucking cool.

Yeah yeah, it's Adventure Time, but I always thought this had a heavy Lovecraftian vibe. There's also a scene much later in the series where some guy breaks out of a cosmic prison and breaks some creatures out with him that he calls "The Ancients" or something, and they look like Lovecraftian style monsters.
>>
>>1983735
Also, this link:

This is my strongest evidence for my theory that "The Lich" is another avatar for Cthulhu. Cthulhu is a war god, and seeks only absolute destruction. The Lich, in this clip, lays that exact same idea out. Cthulhu is sleeping due to the poison stars. Similarly, The Lich is entombed at various points, as it's the only way to prevent his reign. Just thought this was interesting.
>>
>>1983749
>Cthulhu is a war god, and seeks only absolute destruction

Kinda right. Cthulhu can only live when the starts are in the proper alignment. Not sure what poison stars is supposed to mean.

>>
>>1985889
Lovecraft's shit is all vapid surface level stuff. By making all his monsters terrifyingly 'unknowable' and shit, he's limited his universe to be very shallow. Lovecraftian horror is interesting, but has no staying power since you can't build anything with it, every story has to end with things spiraling out of control and comprehension.

>>
>>1943610
The issue is that Lovecraft is pretty basal to both horror and sci-fi as we understand them today. Pretty much everyone grabs disparate elements of his work.

The reason there are so few direct adaptions, I assume, are because Lovecraft's views on race are VERY readily apparent in a lot of his work.

Still, there are stories that don't include much of his racial ideology that I'd argue are prime for adaptions; Mountains of Madness and Shadow Out of Time are begging for proper cinematic adaption.

That's the point of Lovecraftian horror you idiot. You aren't meant to be able to build anything with it. As soon as you can create a 'mythos' out of it, it stops being unknown.
>>
>>1988131
