I'm guessing you don't really know what actual hacking is. The video you're asking for would pretty much just be

You're right. I've no notion on what can be considered "real" hacking. I've not once been able to or have seen something that I would call real hacking.

But surely reading code, looking for a vulnerability, and then abusing it, can be represented in a short webm. I was hoping someone had something like that. All Ive been able to gather from quick googling, is the process, but I have yet to see a real example.

No it isn't. It's actually much different than that, real hackers work in groups, much of the "hacking" part actually envolves going outside and getting physical access to networks.
And then, the actual hacking part can take months.

No, netsec guy here. The guy voicing the video isn't the hacker.

He's watching other hackers fuck with his honeypots, which is far more hilarious. In one instance, a chink government hacker has a stroke and has trouble interacting with his bots via his C&C tool *for a solid fucking hour* because he keeps typing commands wrong.

It had some VERY legit bits, such as the telephone - tape recorder trick, the way the TV station was hacked, the use of stockpiled passwords/connection information and the dumpster diving to dig up sensitive data with regards to the company structure. most of the rest is 1000% bullshit but at least it looked cool.

A hacker is someone who enjoys playful cleverness—not necessarily with computers. The programmers in the old MIT free software community of the 60s and 70s referred to themselves as hackers. Around 1980, journalists who discovered the hacker community mistakenly took the term to mean “security breaker.”

Please don't spread this mistake. People who break security are “crackers.”

wrong. you can hack into a system (playfully) or take the straight way with brute force and crack the password. doing the latter you run a script that tries one possible password after another starting with likelier ones.

Most hacking involves social hacking. Calling people and telling them you are IT Security and their account has been listed as suspiscious so you will have to delete it unless they can verify their ID and password. Most people that work with computers know less than jack shit about IT security, but won't want to lose their access to company email so they'll just give you their ID and password. Now you have legitimate access to that corporate system. Next step: Elevating its privilege!

That's why you read about so many phishing attempts in email.

Most hacking is targeted these days. The Chinese trying to hack into big IT, aerospace, that sort of thing. The Russians hacking into middle scale businesses and crypto-locking their files until they pay a ransom, etc. The average home user only has to worry about Nigerians or Syrians crypto-locking their files and demanding $25 in bitcoins to get their files unscrambled.

There are ways to attack systems from outside that don't involve social attacks, but those are slow and inefficient. Humans will always be the weakest link in any computer security, therefore they will always be the easiest element to "hack".
>>
>>2242083
Kevin's hacks was mostly "phreaking" and social. He used social engineering to find out what people at the FBI and other agencies were spying on him. Then he called up their voice mail system, and listened to their voice mails. Scary scary!

It's because of his dumb ass that we had to put PIN numbers on our phone voice mail accounts as government contractors. But most people make them incredibly easy to hack. Either some basic knowledge (like their or their kids birthdays) or just easy patterns (like 1234) still rule those.
>>
>>2247214
He was correct. "Hackers" were just as likely to play with the hardware as explore what machines were hooked up to a certain accessable network. They called themselves hackers. They called people that purposely did bad things "crackers".

Mainstream didn't care. So now its all hackers, and only old grey beards remember the difference.

No one uses brute force hacking for password hunting. You use salted rainbow tables and some quick search/compare. The machine finds the matches, so you now quickly that ajstyles.01@wwe.com account's password is "mylittlepony" and johncena.01@wwe.com is "penis1234", but you have no clue about the other 60%. and you don't care, because you are just looking to get your foot in the door. Once there, you can then do various things (looking to elevate privs or just dig around).

You wanna watch real hacking? Watch Phone Losers. You'd be amazed what people will do if you just say you're from "The Corporate Office". 10 seconds and you can get peoples full IDs and make them give free shit to random people in the store. 30 seconds and you can have them breaking all the windows due to "gaseous issues".
You don't hack systems, you hack people. Because people are fucking idiots.

check out CTFs and cybersecurity work
much of the work is IDA (diassembly) and memory/stack analysis via debugger. CTFs also focus on patching exploits where most of the coding occurs (though occasionally remote code can be deployed in more complex exploits in binary payloads), many exploits require little coding so CTFs is really the ultimate test of security skill.
