Why are new school shounen so soulless compared to the old classics? It has really gone down the drain in recent years, hasn't it? Jump's shounen formula has always been generic, but generic isn't necessarily bad. I look back to Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, Yu Yu Hakusho, Slam Dunk, Hunter x Hunter, Hokuto no Ken, City Hunter, Dr. Slump, Ninku, Kinnikuman, Dragon Quest, Death Note, Shaman King, Rokudenashi Blues, Rurouni Kenshin, Cobra, Mazinger Z, YGO, Bastard!! - you name it.

It's crazy how much better they are than anything printed on Jump nowadays. There's so much heart and soul to them, even their art is typically very different from one another. Nu shounen are just sterile and they all look the same.
>>
>>271340884
Old mangaka had more nuanced, varied life than just being otaku and implemented their experiences into their work.
>>
>>271340884
Newer shounen typically excel in 4 areas in my opinion:
1) They aren't as long.
2) Their adaptations have much more consistent animation (but also never hit the high highs of the classics).
3) The biggest names either combine things with a feel the classics don't have or do things the classics didn't. Just look at fucking Fire Punch. This is not always a good thing, but it's also not always a bad thing.
4) The authors can be heartless when they want to be toward their main cast.
However, they almost all do have a soulless feeling to them. It's hard to put into measurable or specific terms, and it could even partially be nostalgia. It's almost as if their characters are channeling half-hearted happiness at best. Goku and Luffy suffer so much in their stories, but they also radiate a vibe like they're enjoying life, doing what they want to do (when they aren't flanderized like they are at present). Even someone like Yusuke is having a good time spitting one liners while he risks his life. I feel like pretty much all the new series have this unshakable sense of suffering or obsession with negativity. Undead Unluck is the one that made me smile most often, but even then, the premise is literally conceptual negation.

Just comparing these shitty nu-shounens to the old manga is a fucking insult

Yes, Naruto did turn to shit at some point with some highlights here and there after that point
Yes, Bleach did go downhill after Soul Society arc but even after that it had kino moments
One Piece was consistently good until the time skip and then followed the example of the other 2 big ones, became shit with big highlights then went back to being shit again

But despite that, all these nu-garbage shounen like JJK, BNHA, KNY or CSM do not compare to the old generation much less the Big 3 when they were at their peak. They're just more consistent but they never hit the same highs

These nu-shounen are only saved by their anime versions having good music and occasionally amazing sakuga animation moments that turn "meh" manga moments into hype anime scenes. Otherwise they're completely bottom of the barrel garbage and consistently mediocre

If any of these seeies were released back in the early 2000s at the heyday of Naruto, Bleach and One Piece, they would have been canceled after 6 weeks of serialization

JJK is one of the worst manga I had the displeasure of reading and I will always hold a grudge against the normalfag audience for buying me into this. There is nothing here but shock factor and powerfantasyfagging, Gojo is the embodiment of this, but nerfed in the sense that he accomplishes nothing with so that the plot can happen. He is a character who can easily be removed from the story by nerfing the antagonists (which would still easily outclass 95% of the cast, so you can keep you misery and despair thing going) and nothing would change.

The MC is overshadowed by the support cast and is in general excruciatingly boring, not even the author is not fond of him. This is indeed so profoundly bad that the community mindbroke itself with "i'm... a cog" maymays as a coping mechanism. There are myriad of plot contrivances after the Shibuya arc (which there is even even in that arc), but it's painfully obvious how the author stopped caring at the start of the next arc, this is where you will see the "PUNCH HARDER" meme clearly starting to manifest itself with a trackload of unispired fights.

No character has any depth and are typical tropes sprinkled with a little "mature edginess", see Nanami or Higurama, they exist so they can die/be crippled for the shock factor, the only character with a semblance of soul being Todo. This applies to villains or neutral parties as well which they exist to fight/torture the main cast and then job to a more powerful bad guy (Jogo, Kashimo, Mahito). I won't even go into depth into the sheer levels of faggotry omitted from each page and the horrendous looking women, as if the author is alergic to a presentable female form, the main heroine was in a narrative limbo for almost 4 years. It also has a major demographic of people watching shounen, or perhaps even anime in general for the first time, making it's fanbase highly insufferable.

Why is this popular again?

A lot of them forget the worldbuilding entirely and just turn their series into boss gauntlets

You will only know the true impact of a work of art after a certain amount of time has passed. Saint Seiya was more popular than Dragon Ball during its serialization but today it is almost forgotten. People hated the ending of Naruto when it was serialized but today they find it satisfactory. Be patient.

>Saint Seiya was more popular than Dragon Ball during its serialization
No it wasn't. Saint Seiya was only more popular for a short period of time and that was in the beginning. A few months later, Dragon Ball eclipsed it and it never surpassed it at any point. The only series that could give Dragon Ball a run for its was Slam Dunk.

Dragon Ball was literally the best thing that could've ever happened to Jump and their sales upped by 15%. When it ended, Jump's readership dropped from 6.5 million yearly to just 4 in 2 years. Then when Slam Dunk ended, there's another two million drop to 1997.

If you concede to the existence of a mind, you more or less concede the existence of a soul or spirit, depending what those words are actually supposed to mean. Man obviously has an immaterial element that goes beyond basic reactions to physical and chemical stimuli. You wouldn't be able to judge someone's character or have a notion of improvement otherwise. Consequently, that immaterial element is reflect in art and experienced by others because it moves in tandem with the mind and body. A lot of series (not just new ones) have a sense that the author is just doing what's popular at the time to sell it. It's not like Toriyama where he did it to make money, but the art is quite uniquely his own with his perception flowing through the ink. I think when people say something is soulless, they're really saying the work doesn't have enough substance to surpass their benchmarks and make them appreciate the novelty. In many cases, there is no novelty because the work is a cash grab (see all the exorcist series, shitty isekai, reboots, and series trying to continue an older work for which the creator has long since lost passion).

This is not to say that a lot of the attachment people have to art is separate from nostalgia. Your formative years are very important and I think for most people, the way art makes them feel is more important than what's going on under the hood. If you liked it as a kid and it holds up to your sensibilities enough to still enjoy it as an adult, you'll obviously use it as a benchmark of sorts.

P.S. I wrote this in a weird order, so the first paragraph references the last. I am too sleepy to fix it

Comparing SnK to other nu shonen is a bit of an insult to SnK. SnKs dogshit ending is considered a disaster purely because the story preceding it was great. SnK had a storyline, lore, worldbuilding and compelling characters, it only comes crashing down with the ending which we all know what it did to the manga.

In comparison JJK for me has always been a husk of a manga. Its basically DBZ and HxH but without the good parts of DBZ and HxH. It has no coherent storyline, no lore, no worldbuilding, no compelling character development or interaction, no unique world to call it home, literally nothing. I always called it the perfect example of how shallow and niggerish is the modern audience, funny thing is the whole "we got no good writing, just hype and aura moments" memes that zoomers have been passing around show they themselves are self aware to what they're reading. Its genuinely bizarre to this day how this manga made it big and the same goes with MHA and KnY. Thing is I never liked all the older shonen but I always understood why people could like HxH, Yu Yu Hakusho, FMA, Slam Dunk, One Piece, Naruto etc etc. Like all these shows had charm, decent storyline amd good characters so even if a setting didnt interest me like say Slam Dunk and it being a sports manga, I still understood why people would lile this. I just dont get it with nu shonen, call me an old boring boomer or whatever but even I cant take this level of blandness, I cant believe we've come to a poont where Dragon Ball is somehow better written than most nu shonen

After the latter half of the Buu Saga, the popularity of Dragon Ball had already declined, and for about eight years until the revival boom occurred, it was practically a dead franchise.
During this period in Japan, Mini yonku, Evangelion, and Pokémon were creating new waves, and Dragon Ball was rapidly being forgotten.

>Jiraiya's death
I don’t understand why this is treated as a shocking scene by Narutards.
From the moment Jiraiya offered to infiltrate the Hidden Rain Village, it was as if Kishimoto was shouting through a loudspeaker, "Ladies and gentlemen! He’s going to die in this arc, so get your handkerchiefs ready!"
So, it was obvious from that point that he would die.
A truly shocking death scene is one that happens suddenly, without the audience being prepared for it.
>>
>>271350538
Jiraiya had the only genuinely sad death, Asuma, if you like Shikamaru or got more attached by anime, which Third Hokage falls into as well then gets shat up retroactively.

>gets better treatment because it’s older.

Naruto and Bleach are literally examples of this.
Personally, I also think Dragon Ball is overrated, as the story and universe are not explored in depth. (I do acknowledge that the art and battle scenes are well-made.)
As oldman who has been reading manga since the golden era of the mid-90s, I feel that the new-generation shonen listed by OP are better these older works, and many of the old gen are "unfairly" overvalued due to nostalgia.

I can understand why One Piece gets good recognition since, at least in the first half, its storytelling and universe-building are solid.
As for older-generation manga that I clearly consider superior to new-generation manga, off the top of my head, they are:

JoJo (Parts 1, 2, and 4)
Slam Dunk
Dragon Quest: Dai no Daiboken
Hikaru no Go
Level E
Eye-Shield 21
Nogami Neuro
Death Note
Hunter x Hunter

That’s about it.
I would like to include Yu Yu Hakusho due to sentimental reasons, but in retrospect, it’s pretty mediocre outside of the Sensui arc.

Naruto is mocked quite a lot, at least in Japanese online communities.
The main reasons are Kishimoto’s lack of writing skills and poor command of the Japanese language, leading to clumsy dialogue.
However, it is acknowledged that the series was good from the beginning up to the Chunin Exam arc, as he had a competent editor during that period.
>>
I used to think the same about Naruto. I really did. Blah blah blah, it might have sucked but it had high highs. Then my older brother has to live at home for a few months during lockdown, starts watching Naruto. I watch the Neji fight with him. Holy shit, it sucks and is slow as fuck. MHA is the most sovlful of nushonen, the world feels like a living breathing place, the characters feel like living people. KNY has good characters but the world isn’t very well developed - I could easily picture myself as a rank and file shinigami in Bleach, or a ninja in Naruto, but I’d struggle to do the same for KnY. JJK is perhaps the least soulful of the nu shonen. I remember a hunterfag copypasta about how there are no actual characters in JJK, just empty imitations. This is true. The whole series operates off of hype, shock value, “aura”, cool one-liner quotes, and fights beefed up in the anime.

The fact that this shit is included shows that the ranking has no meaning whatsoever.
While there were some funny parts in the gag sections, the author often didn’t know how to wrap up episodes and abandoned them, resulting in awkward endings, which shows a lack of storytelling ability.

Naruto had a very high quality compared to the standards of shonen anime at the time.
I haven’t forgotten the era when Naruto fags were mocking One Piece by showcasing the differences in animation quality.
Then, with the emergence of KNY and JJK, and the improvement in One Piece’s animation quality along with the decision to produce the WIT version, suddenly they started crying, "B-but, we don’t rely on the quality of the anime anyway!"

This.
For example, I can agree with the claim that JoJo and Slam Dunk are superior to the new generation.
However, I feel discomfort with the tendency in /a/ to deify Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach, worshipping them as if it's kind of religion.
Among these four, the only one I can confidently say is better than AOT, MHA, KNY, JJK, and CSM is only One Piece up until the Skypiea arc.
Perhaps DB too, but only for the Saiyan and Frieza arcs.
>>
>>271351363
>Dragon Ball is overrated
Dragon Ball is the only shonen ever made that knew how to perfectly use the weekly SJ format. One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, they all tried to be bigger than the format allows and that's why they screwed up. All this coping and lame theories regarding the ending of Jujutsu only exists because Gege was too pretentious.
>>
Someone summarize what happened in JJK after Gojo got scissored, that was shitposted so much I absorbed a bit through osmosis, how did they beat the unbeatable bad guy that all the rest of the cast was too weak to even interfere against?

Why would anyone come out of it with the conclusion that it's better than DBZ or bleach when it's functionally the same shit, except that you replace spectacle with retarded tactics that stop being as clever the second time around.
Shit, at least Bleach has a thematic backdrop.

Anything you could get from JoJo (all the weirdo quirky shit) you could get from something like Chainsaw Man in a much better package and without the enemy of the week structure.

Show don’t tell is a retarded criticism because it’s used by those who need shit spoon fed to them anyways otherwise they’d be completely lost. And applying that to a power system? Is gonna be like DragonBall were piccolo shoots gohan with a bean that makes clothes and you’re just supposed to “Sure. He can do that. How can he do that? Fuck if I know? But hey, they showed me he can do it, and that’s all I need. I’m not owned an explanation.”
>>
Honestly I dont care much about new or old, my problem with new shonen is first, their setting and second, how depraved of adventure they are.

1. Setting. The setting problem kills half of the new shonen for me, the "its set in Tokyo and heres a school" setting just makes me check out almost immediately, like theres nothing less that I want than a modern day japanese setting and a bunch of high school students.

2. Adventure. I feel like adventure fucking died with one piece or some shit because no shonen even fucking begins to try it anymore. All new shonen have going on for them is fightfaggotry. Like wheres the adventure or mystery box world design where shit is captivating and keeps you hooked to find out X secret of the world etc etc. But nah, just muh hype of two guys fighting is all these retarded mfs can come up with

AoT is better than all those other examples by several orders of magnitude even with the bummer ending, it just had the unfortunate length and timing to end around the same time all the other new kids are showing up. That said yes it’s pretty indisputable that the vast majority of new stuff being put out now falls short in more than ways than one. I couldn’t properly guess why and I don’t really think anyone else can but I’m getting the feeling that the ‘creative well’ of popular manga is starting to run dry, that is, they’re kind of overshadowed by their predecessors and default to using the same themes, story beats, etc. over and over again because they realize it *technically* works, but they manage to do it even more half assedly than their original inspirations, despite the fact that a lot of them also weren’t even great to begin with. I think JJK is the bigger offender of this out do the new batch but it obviously applies to most if not all of them. I do wonder what, if any, will be the next series to break the mold and do something fresh and unique and execute it well will be

The explanation wouldn't add anything useful to the story though, magical powers are just magical powers - making up mechanics for them is useless and nonsensical, and if anything just gives the author more room to break immersion when they have to break the rules of it for an event that's actually important for the characters' development and the plot progression. Shounen has always been bad for bogging down the momentum of the story with useless exposition that goes on for way too long, the less of that the better.

The reason Dragon Ball GT had consistently high viewership ratings is that, at the time in Japan, there was a cultural practice of having a standard program on during dinner time around 7 PM.
Dragon Ball had enough name value to be chosen for that slot.
However, the reality of its popularity was hollow, as children had already become obsessed with Mini 4WD cars, and the money they had for toys and merchandise was mostly spent on those instead.
Children who owned GT merchandise were even mocked by their peers for being out of touch with the times.
Furthermore, as time went on, Pokémon emerged, completely extinguishing any chance for Dragon Ball to become a hot topic among children again.
And for early teen boys who had once been fans of the Dragon Ball franchise at its peak, Dragon Ball itself had become too "childish".

Most people don't care that your fireball is powered by " the seven gorkidorki seals growing with every tear I shed" - why is that what produces the fireball? What's the mathematical relation between tear quantity and the gorkidorki seals' rate of growth such that the fireball can somehow become possible? It's just an illusion of consistency and limitations with verbiage, what you decide to throw in there has no actual relevance to what happens in the story - you can easily change out most power systems while keeping all your story beats the same.

By looking into the trends in Japan after 1995, it's easy to understand how Dragon Ball rapidly faded from the mainstream.
Until the early 90s, Dragon Ball monopolized the interest of children, but by the mid to late 90s, its share was swiftly taken away by a wave of newer content, most of which originated from Corocoro Comic.
Westerners, not being very familiar with Japan during this time, tend to believe that Dragon Ball was always the top franchise in Japan.

Yeah, Aristotle managing to imbue actual deductive entailment to his natural philosophy, and even come up with some believable (albeit flawed, mainly due to a lack of good tools and methods for gaining empirical starting points) mechanisms was a big improvement over all the philosophers before him. And while physics is ultimately just mathematical abstractions, its predictive power shows that at the very least something real is being abstracted out from mind-external reality there.

That's exactly it though, I would have to identify a specific one in a specific series - I read shounen, yawn at these things because they waste time without adding anything and then move on, I don't dwell on boring stuff after I've experienced it. These power systems don't stay in my mind because there is nothing compelling about them. I vaguely remembered the Cosmos system and the relation to the big bang - but I would have to go look it up and identify the story beats in which specific powers are explained within that system for a manga I dropped a long time ago.

I feel most new shounens (well at least the trending ones) lack any in-depth setting to lure the audience in...
Example: in jjk's case it was restrictive because gege was an idiot and wrote that sorcerers were only (or 99% of them) in Japan and then tried to expand on this at the end which went to nothing. Imo it felt like he had an eureka moment but since he never bothered giving depth to the setting he gave up on it because it'd require dozen of chapters of expositions and people would drop it instantly.
On the other side you had CSM, fujimoto never gave you so much in-depth info about his setting but I assume he has most of it in his head expanded. He gives hints and drops some info here and there so when he pulls something like Yoru sacrificing every american's trigger finger so she can fire a shot because America had a contract with the Gun Devil and somehow she can abuse it feels less than an asspull than "oh by the way, this paramecia fruit was actually the inteligent and manipulative mythical zoan type human devil fruit of the legendary sun god"...

Faggot that character is one of the worst characters in JJK.

His entire character is a trashy formulaeic comedy act and you have to be insane to like it.

Lolno no it wasnt. I still question to this day if people ever read that melodramatic shit from the beginning where a it dumps the arcs setting lore, a character cries about every new "Island" arc, shit gets resolved and the rag starts from the top of the process again. It gets old super fast and you are calling out the beats and not giving an ass shit about the fights anymore.

What kind of data should I show?
I searched for data recording GT's commercial sales from 1996, but I couldn't find any.
While such data likely exists in Bandai or Toei's databases, it's probably not publicly available.
Therefore, the most reliable sources are the trends data in Japan at the time and the testimonies of people who lived there during that period.

I was early teenager in Japan back then, so I vividly remember the situation.
The faces of kids' culture in 1996 were undoubtedly Pokémon and Tamagotchi, and at least GT wasn't part of that group.
Also, something I just remembered: Gundam X was incredibly popular among my peers, and I distinctly recall the Gachapon craze around it.

In any case, by that point, Dragon Ball was already entirely out of the mainstream trend.

i'm glad many people are finally opening their eyes and seeing jjk for the soulless piece of shit that it is. shibuya, which i hear many so many fags call the peak of this series, is just fightfaggotry for tide pod eating zoomers that makes up jjk's fanbase
it's just an artificial fight, after fight, after fight, after fight, after fight... with lots of randoms and no story or build-up behind it. The fights are really just two jews trying to out-jew each other with contract clauses
>UHM ackshually my Ching Chong Beam Mugen 5000 has a 1.556x multiplier against his Ping Pong x50 kick and its also of illusion type during a rainy day meaning it has an ulterior 5% chance to negate its...
this new gen of battle shounen sucks donkey balls and will never recapture the magic of one piece, dbz or naruto
jjk is literally made for zoomers with adhd and npcs, and it's really sad watching those kids wanting to push these pathetic series or arcs to the top just because they are their gen's battle shounen. in a few years after this shitshow has ended, it'll be forgotten and looked at as cringe written by an autistic chuuni (who's gay btw) while zoomers pretends they never liked it or give it a cope rating like 6/10

>MHA has really cute and compelling characters and great art, it's the one of the trio that I think will age better despite its anime being meh

It's gonna age badly, it got popular thanks the capeshit era, being hilled as a Naruto replacement, strictly following shonen trope on top on being pro status quo ,but you wouldn't about that unless you were there.

Wrong. It's considered a disaster because even the biggest apologists could no longer make excuses for the story without being ridiculed. SnK's story never rose above mediocrity and was outright bad most of the time.

That was an internet meme. WSJ editor in chief actually said Black Clover was the Naruto replacment.
>strictly following shonen trope on top on being pro status quo
It subverts several shonen tropes, such as the rival becoming a villain, the heroine becoming a wife and the protagonist having a special father. Plus the society literally changed in the end of the story. How about actually reading the series and not just tweets about it?

You selected the absolute best ones over the last 50 years on different magazines vs the last 10 tears of WSJ only.
On top of that you were young, you weren't checking the entire magazine to find out only 5 out of 20 were good.

>Nu shounen are just sterile and they all look the same.

You probably mean 2014+ (MHA/BC and co) I agree they are super safe and boring and I blame Oda for that.
>>
>>271341285
This, it's happened with Western entertainment too. Impressive IRL experiences with war, huge historical events, crime etc. gets you stories like the Lord of The Rings. Experience with only anime tropes after anime tropes gets you gimmicky "it's Bleach but THIS", or "it's Naruto but THIS", ---or in the West only experiencing modern universities with faggots everywhere and no hardship gets you MCU shit. They're just twists on fake experiences, not new works sourced from real life.
>>
>>271341510
>The authors can be heartless when they want to be toward their main cast.
The midwits idea of good story telling
>>
>>271370435
Sometimes the opposite was the far better option. Toriyama apparently hated Vegeta and yet his revival meant one of the best redemption arcs in shounen, and the inspiration for the archetype of "rival similar to MC characters" moving forwards. I think the author liking their own cast at least means they care, which is a good thing.
>>
>>271341510
>Goku and Luffy suffer so much in their stories, but they also radiate a vibe like they're enjoying life, doing what they want to do (when they aren't flanderized like they are at present). Even someone like Yusuke is having a good time spitting one liners while he risks his life. I feel like pretty much all the new series have this unshakable sense of suffering or obsession with negativity. Undead Unluck is the one that made me smile most often, but even then, the premise is literally conceptual negation

Maybe you don't like stakes ?
I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but you seems to prefer comfort battle shonen and they are making less of them instead of half the mag like it was back in the 90s.

Wrong, Naruto stood the test of time because the author was telling a story that pass on experiences he learned in real life. That's why Naruto still dominates 10 years later but nu-shounen won't, because they're all writing based on their favorite anime/manga than real life experience

LOTR is a timeless classic because Tolkien had all his experiences as a linguist, a historian, and a soldier in one of the most cataclysmic wars of all time

Similarly, Naruto struck such a chord with generations because it literally channeled Kishi's experiences as a perpetual failure in life and the manga industry up to then and he based off the War arc from stories his grandfather shared who's a WW2 veteran

>>
>>271375722
Kishimoto, and a lot of other shounen manga artists, were heaving influenced by Toriyama and other influences they grew up with and were obviously copying them. To say otherwise is delusional. He may have put some of himself and what he heard in there but that's not special at all even mangaka that don't have "timeless" manga under their belt admits to doing this. Naruto is just one example, you think every classic manga was written by someone with tons of life experience? They were nerds and college dropouts.

Every medium is full of people copying the old. This is completely normal.

>muh lotr
And there are books written by introverts and weirdos with none of his experiences that are also timeless classics
