So after working through the newest volume, and rereading these, I think I've figured out a few things. Shimada's domain is total control of darkness, not Death. All of her abilities are really based on darkness. The instant killing by exposure to darkness, travel at the speed of light/dark, invisibility, travel through objects (which are dark inside). Because Sanko is currently only "14" years old, either that legend was around for eons before he was born, or he has actually been alive before, but he clearly has died also. Both Avakian and Shimada imply this, without telling him anything specific. I think Shimada got her powers long ago maybe by killing Sanko for his bones. But she has no motivation to do it again. I think this might be why Avakian resents her at first.
