It's functionaliy more "childish" than his shikai which has many games with layers of complex rules like doppelgangers, and colors.His bankai is literally just: You hit me you take damage. You get Aids, you drown. And then a basic throat cutting attack that ends in explosion. It lacks in spectacle and is pretty boring all things considered. It feels like a bunch of random powers thrown in because Kubo couldn't think of anything more interesting. Lame Bankai, didn't really live up to the hype around it. At least Urahara's is interesting visually and technically.

Just finished the episode 7.5/10. The art direction was top tier, the final act under water especially was great. Shunsui's bankai is still hard to understand for me, all I got was that he can force his opponent to play some children game and kill them in the process. Also can use shadows for attack. Cool episode. Next 2 episodes will be great as they will showcase the backstories of Nemu and Nanao, giving more emotional weight to these fights.

This makes it a unique threat because by being inherently nameless and unquantifiable in power, means that any attempt to name it as something lesser than it would be negated because its nameless. For example, a blackhole will warp space time whether its called a blackhole or not and renaming it to be a whitehole wouldn't change its nature. The only thing that can be a threat to it, arguably, is Ywach.I'd argue that even Kyouraku's bankai wouldn't matter, because his final attack slits the throat, but instant regeneration bypasses it. Also, Kyouraku is strong as fuck, but not so strong that he can eclipse it.
