Heartcatch is decent but Precure as a whole is not very good even as far as magical girl series go. But since it's THE magical girl series today people pretend it's good and pretend that the genre is still alive.

I don't dislike episode of the week stuff (though even among those, and including Precure, they still typically have plots) but anime is where that started. If you go read older mahou shoujo manga they tend to have stronger plots. Probably because screwing around with episodic stuff doesn't work as well with monthly manga. And often the anime will rearrange things to throw in more episodic elements and I've seen them even add more elements to sell toys.
