I always look back at Aikatsu and wonder what would've happened if the Seiyuus sang the songs. After the first season, which carefully chose both the VA and the vocals to have similar voices, the mismatch between the voices of VA and vocal started becoming a serious issue. One might think that it doesn't matter that much, but since the characters heavily represent the songs, it heavily affected how charming a song can be. Good example would be, how Ran songs lost their charm after the vocal change. Or Seira and Kii who are just prime examples of how sloppy and ill planned mess Dreca was. What's for sure is that the quality of songs would have drastically fallen if the VAs sang the songs. Almost all VAs in Aikatsu series also have idol roles in other projects like iM@S and they sang songs there for years, but still couldn't even come close to skills of the vocals at singing. It's also disappointing that we didn't get much examples of VAs singing Aikatsu songs, probably out of respect for the vocals. There were some outliers like Yurika and Elza's VAs who proved that they are actually better than their vocal counterparts, but they were clear minorities.Aikatsu Friends was a clear example of what could go wrong if they tried to go for both as the show was ruined by textbook reading tier acting from the main cast.Aikatsu had so many great songs, but I feel like their potential was limited in one way or another and we couldn't get the perfect version of the song as such so I had to rant. Maybe AI could fix this in the future.

https://www.animatetimes.com/news/details.php?id=1761876176Another interview with the producers of the movie, one of the interesting things is that the Aikatsu guys all call them dresses while the Pretty guy calls the coords. Bad TL 1/>Following the release of the movie, we've received numerous messages of thanks from fans on social media. How do you all feel when you see that?>Kimura: I imagine all three of us feel the same way, but... first and foremost, it's a sense of relief. We've been planning this project with the hope that our fans would enjoy it, so seeing their reactions has been a relief. We've been exchanging songs through a kind of student exchange program and then after singing each other's songs, both within our company and at Tatsunoko Productions, people have been saying "I really wanted them to do this song!" (laughs). I believe that was also true for the fans. So I was a bit worried about what to do if someone said "this isn't it" but I was really happy to see so many positive comments about the setlist and song combinations. >Shimizu: To be honest, I must say the response has been so beyond my expectations. Before the release, I was prepared for the possibility that some negative opinions might surface, but the overwhelmingly positive reactions completely overturned that expectation. As Kimura said, I was truly relieved primarily.>Yoda: I feel the same way. Particularly regarding the setlist, much of it was decided by us producers at a stage prior to the creative process. I could see the story would be quite moving after watching it but precisely because of that, if the setlist had been unpopular, it would have been entirely our fault, wouldn't it? (laughs).>Kimura & Shimizu: (laughs)>Yoda: That's precisely why I was so relieved to hear so many people say "the setlist was brilliant!"
>>283432712>Bad TL 2/>I'm surprised to hear that the setlist had already been decided before Director Okawa joined the project. So you'd made up your mind at such an early stage, then.>Yoda: That's right. Whether a song is easy or difficult to make is determined by various constraints, such as the nature of the 3DCG data. Therefore we involved not only the producers but also our CG team from an early stage to work together on putting the setlist together. First, it was necessary to put together a "feasible setlist". If they were to say "this can't be done" after the story's been finished writing, then everything would be turned upside down you know (sarcastic smile). While certain aspects changed and evolved as we developed the scenario, chronologically speaking it began with the question "what should we do about the song first?" >Kimura: Given that "characters" "songs" "dresses" and "stages" are major elements in both works, it felt like the combinations of each needed to be organized by us.>Yoda: On top of that, when it came to the coords, there was also the issue that the visual size and overall feel were too different so we were quite careful about that aspect too. We couldn't quite bring ourself to simply hand it over to the creative team, so we did our best to organise them. >May I ask how that setlist meeting was conducted?
>>283432752Bad TL 3/>Kimura: First, we each brought along about ten songs from our respective works that we thought would absolutely surprise the audience if played in a cinema, and then we selected from those. After that we worked out the practical constraints for each song, such as "how many people could that stage accommodate" and "who would be wearing which dress". Of course, we consulted the music team as well, but due to issues such as the singing key and character image, so we weren't able to choose with complete freedom. That said we all agreed it's better when there's that sense of fun, like "That pairing! I never saw that coming!" like a surprise or "What, those two are teaming up!?" but then we ended up spending too much time talking about the ideas (laughs).>Yoda: That's right (laughs).>Kimura: We were endlessly discussing things that have real no answers.>By the way, were you acquainted with each other's teams before this?>Kimura: I was in the sense of our professional relationship with Tatsunoko Productions. For example, the series "Shabake", currently airing on Fuji TV's "Noitamina" block and directed by (Takahiro) Okawa, has its CG layouts handled by Tatsunoko Production. We did have that sort of relationship before, but I didn't really know the PriPara team personally. That said I had worked alongside the creators before, and Otobe (Yoshihiro) from the CG team was originally from Sunrise, so I was personally aware of his name.>In that situation, you exchanged greetings once again and the setlist meeting began. It certainly looks like it took some time.
>>283432779Bad TL 4/>Yoda: And when we considered the running time and budget we realised "20 songs is just not feasible, is it?" (laughs). So when we reached around 13 songs, one new track plus 12 existing ones, we narrowed it down to roughly six songs from each. Five songs from each would be a bit on the low side, would'nt it? Also, our CG team has a "super Aikatsu otaku" (laughs). There are a few of them like that, but one of them is absolutely amazing. They actually took the initiative to compile a "costume collection" document saying, "this coord absolutely suits this song!">"Costume collection" amazing!>Yoda: For example, with "START DASH SENSATION", they thought the outfit most similar in design and colour scheme to Akari's White Sky Veil coord is (in PriPara terms) Dream Parade Princess coord... they included it with ridiculously detailed analysis like that (laughs). >So that was the idea!>Yoda: That's right. After reviewing it, I'd run it through a filter like "this does seem quite feasible doesn't it?" and then ask everyone "shall we proceed with this in the scenario?" Even just the work done to reach that point took about four months. >When speaking with the staff during interviews or stage greetings, one gets the impression that the production period itself wasn't particularly long, surprisingly...>Shimizu: That's right (laughs). I can't go into specifics, but it felt like we were all working hard and cramming everything into a very short period. >Director Okawa himself mentioned being a fan of both series, but were there any other fans of the Pretty Series within the Aikatsu! team?
>>283432809Bad TL 5/>Shimizu: Of course there were. When we were selecting songs, neither I nor Kimura had been watching the Pretty Series intensively at the time, so we were discussing what might work best... but now we have younger staff members joining us who are from precisely the generation that watched PriPara and Aikatsu! in real time. So while learning various things from those children, we discussed things like "this combination works well" and "this song is essential" and gradually narrowed down the candidates.>Indeed, they're precisely the generation just starting in society's workfore. It's quite moving.>Shimizu: Really. I find myself thinking, 'Has it really been that long?' (laughs).>Yoda: It's our tenth anniversary, after all (laugh).>Producer Shinichiro Ohba (Takara Tomy Arts) was part of the scenario team, wasn't he?>Yoda: That's right. As a producer, he was also involved in the scriptwriting.>What discussions took place with Ryuichi Kimura and Makoto Moriwaki, who were participating as supervisors? I understand from Director Okawa that they were essentially keeping a watchful eye over the project.>Shimizu: Once the script was finished, we had them review the content and incorporated each person's requests into the storyboard. So, the plan was for them to look over the storyboards... but essentially, it was a case of leaving it entirely up to us.>Yoda: Their focus was on checks during the preproduction stage, such as scripts and storyboards. Regarding the script, it was written by Tsuchiya Michihiro, who worked on the series composition for PriPara, and Mr Moriwaki remarked, "as expected of Tsuchiya" (laughs). >Shimizu: We also had the sound team present and proceeded with the recording under their direction. For Director Okawa, this was his first time overseeing the voice recording for PriPara, so he mentioned he was glad to have had the opportunity to check it.
>>283432833Bad TL 6/>Yoda: Moriwaki did express some specific requests regarding the finer points of Laala's performance, such as the echo effect for the "shogaku rokunensei" scene, stating she would prefer it to be "a little more like this". "You always have to echo that line three times" she said. I remember then telling the staff "don't just repeat it, make sure you neatly echo the phrase "shogaku rokunensei" precisely three times!" (laughs). >As expected. In terms of production responsibilities, was it roughly split 50/50 between Bandai Namco Pictures and Tatsunoko Production?>Shimizu: THat's right. Bandai Namco Pictures handled the animation while Tatsunoko Production handled the CG aspects, and the project proceeded from the beginning with this established team structure. However in order to depict both works with an "equal" balance, considerable fine-tuning was required at the production level. Naturally we also received input from Bandai and Takara Tomy Arts and it felt like we progressed by coordinating with everyone who was ever involved with the series.>Now that some time has passed since the release, are there any anecdotes you can share that you wouldn't have been able to reveal earlier? If there were any "miracles" that occurred during production, I'd be delighted to hear about them.>Yoda: Hmm, "things I can only say now"... I wonder what that could be (laughs).
>>283432863Bad TL 7/>Shimizu: (laughs). Well now... Director Okawa mentioned a few things during the stage greeting, but precisely because he loved both works so much, his desire to "pack in this and that" was incredibly strong. Finding the right balance between what we could get Okayed within the budget and schedule was truly challenging. But there were quite a few moments where I found myself wondering "should I side with the director here?" What was particularly memorable was the ending (Pretty × Activity). The ending sequence features original artwork all drawn by Okawa. While it's not normally a process where we'd want the director to draw the key animation, he had such a strong desire to do it himself that we allowed it to proceed, but thanks to that the result turned out truly remarkable. The audience response was really positive, so I'm glad we went ahead with that. Though (due to time constraints) I was nervous about it back then. >Yoda: At Tatsunoko Productions when the CG work was reaching its conclusion, I still hadn't received the storyboards for the ending. So I was wondering "oh, you're still working on the ending aren't you, right?" (laughs). When the storyboards arrived, I was talking with Otobe and the others saying "it looks like the mascots are dancing around..." "But this mascot probably doesn't move, does it?" But when I finally saw it, the mascot was dancing like crazy (laughs).>The mascot collaboration in the ending was brilliant, wasn't it? The backgrounds too.>Yoda: I was astonished. So when I asked Okawa, he said "I drew the original artwork myself." "That would've taken a lot time, wouldn't it?" Perhaps it's only because we finished it safely on time that I can say this.
>>283432893Bad TL 8/>The staging, which Otobe lead in creating, was also wonderful.>Yoda: I believe director Okawa also mentioned that the live scenes for existing songs are based on the original footage. For this film, we constructed the stage settings from scratch, but for everything else, like the camera work, effects, and so forth, we aimed to recreate as much as possible from existing material we could use. So in that regard, we left it entirely to the Tatsunoko Production CG team to create the visuals. Regarding the new song, we submitted several drafts for review, receiving specific requests from director Okawa such as "I'd like this part to be more like this" "I want to change this cut" and "I want to expand the aura more" and we made repeated revisions accordingly.>Speaking of auras, the one created by the PriPara idols were also incredibly striking,w as that part of the original concept from the beginning?>Yoda: In fact, it was actually a concern from quite early on (laughs). For the Aikatsu! songs, the PriPara characters were to be adorned with the auras while for the PriPara songs we planned to incorporate cyalume changes for the Aikatsu! characters... however, while cyalume changes could be accommodated simply by creating new coords, the auras were entirely different for each character, so we were feeling our way through it. Ultimately, Tatsunoko Productions proposed designs suited to each character, which were then finalised following the director's review. In addition to that, the stage backgrounds too. For the background, or rather their screen treatment, since the visuals that play differ depending on the song, we initially created something at our own discretion and had director Okawa review it and then receive his OK... that was the process.
>>283432926Bad TL 9/ >Shimizu: Among the PriPara characters, some had new motifs created for them, and I was genuinely surprised that they went to such lengths to make them. Conversely, seeing our own Aikatsu! characters perform the cyalume change left me thinking "amazing they've recreated it so beautifully" which I was truly moved by. I'm so glad you got to see after their cyalume change.>Kimura, what were your thoughts upon seeing the stage scenes again?>Kimura: "Impressive, as expected." Otobe's Tatsunoko Pro CG team has such an excellent reputation in the industry that I wasn't the slightest bit worried from the start. The hand drawn animation parts were produced by our company so I was nervous about those (laughs), but as for the CG we'd left that entirely in their hands, so I was just looking forward to seeing what they came up with. Well, it's a case of "whatever comes out from Tatsunoko Productions will sure to be great". The director gave us directions like "I'd like you to do this" but we were just there to watch, so to speak. >Yoda: That said, the CG was taking quite some time too so it didn't finish until the very last minute, you see (laughs). I was monitoring the progress, so I could tell whether they'd "reached that stage" or "we're not there yet", but I imagine those waiting must have felt anxious.>Shimizu: Well, yes, I must admit I was feeling rather nervous about that particular aspect. We were also running behind schedule, so I was sweating bullets, but I could feel you running alongside me in that regard (laugh). >Yoda: Emails were flying back and forth, weren't they? "Ah, you're still working, aren't you?" (laughs).>When we asked director Okawa, "What kind of step do you think this is in the idol anime scene?", he replied "Well, perhaps going forward, collaborations like this with other works might be possible too. The fact that we have established this precedent may well be significant." What are your thoughts as producers?
>>283432950Bad TL 10/>Kimura: I believe that collaborations between Aikatsu! and PriPara only make sense because of their various close connections, so whether they could collaborate in the same way as other idol series is something we'd need to consider further. In terms of real-life events, collaborations have occurred between Love Live! and Idolm@ster (such as the Transdimensional Festival: Idolm@sterLove Live! Singing Battle held at Tokyo Dome in 2023). Prior to that, Idolm@ster, Aikatsu!, and'Love Live! also gathered together (at the Bandai Namco Entertainment Festival held at Tokyo Dome in 2019). We do that sort of thing in real live performances, but when it comes to presenting it as a story through film, I suppose there are various difficulties involved. Aikatsu! and PriPara launched almost simultaneously as idol series aimed at young girls, both centred around card based arcade cabinets and utilized rhythm game mechanics, developing in a similar format while spurring each other on to greater heights.>Yoda: That's absolutely true (laughs).>It's a rivalry of sorts, isn't it?>Kimura: But regardless of the circumstances, the fans were enjoying both equally, weren't they? This ties in with what I mentioned earlier, but precisely because it's a work that people love both works equally, precisely because of that, the surprise and delight at "I never imagined they'd do it together!" was all the greater. Perhaps it's precisely because these things we thought belonged to separate worlds when we were children have now come together that it's so interesting. Rather than using this as a springboard to collaborate with other works, I find myself wanting to try something new.
>>283432983Bad TL 11/>Yoda: To put it in the context of what we've just been discussing... fans must have originally thought that Aikatsu! and PriPara were "competing series". To be perfectly honest, I suspect they might even have considered us to be bitter enemies. After all, there was a time when we were vying for the same physical space, whether in arcades or retail outlets. Moreover, the anime production was handled by completely different companies, each creating works within the same genre in their own distinct style. Of course, I imagine there most people liked both, but I think quite a few kids got really worked up about which side they were on. Despite this, we collaborated extensively and crafted the story from scratch. I imagine you're all surprised, but we ourselves are surprised too. Had it been a collaboration built on calculated business logic, I don't think it would have turned out this way. This time, both production teams were driven by a shared desire to create something "genuinely interesting and enjoyable" and the producers then continually adjusted things, going beyond conventional "adult logic", and as a result the surrounding manufacturers and various related companies came on board. I believe this truly represents a new trend, and something that would be inconceivable under conventional business logic has been achieved. I really thought "we did a tremendous job there.">Truly a "miraculous encounter", one might say.>Yoda: Really (laugh). Despite the fact this one was a big hit, it would be difficult to try the same thing again. What made this work out so well was the convergence of various coincidences and passion. That's precisely why it's a miracle. So, rather than just expanding the idol anime genre, I feel it has simply opened up "one possibility".
>>283433011Bad TL 12/>Shimizu: Well, I feel the same as you two. I believe it was precisely because each team had members who admired the other's work that this "miracle encounter" came to fruition. It wasn't simply a case of "collaborating would work out well", rather it was precisely because they both genuinely loved the two works that it took shape in this way. >In particular, the dramatic accompaniment "Sora Mitakagayaku" during Solami Luminas's dress-up sequence was most memorable. That is the very essence of that love, one might say...>Yoda: Just before this, I was interviewed alongside the music team, but inevitably the conversation turned to that subject. Everyone was saying in unison, "That song is a miracle" (laughs). It's a miraculous song, perfectly blending the best of both worlds, isn't it? That was a masterstroke by the director. "START DASH SENSATION" features the Aikatsu! pattern while "Make it!" showcases the PriPara pattern, and after presenting both, the final stage features all six members. It wasn't just a sudden bang out of nowhere, but rather something that came after all that build-up... I thought, "Okawa, that was really clever.">It's truly a masterstroke of composition, isn't it? That said, the same could be said regarding the composition of the song itself.>Yoda: Yes. The melody kicks off with a vibe reminiscent of "for idols, cards are life" before wrapping up with a chorus that's quintessentially PriPara. That's cheating, I start to cry because of it (laugh). The ending was splendid too. Everything in the movie is good.>The ending that was mentioned earlier. Honestly, the ending was too much for one pair of eyes (laughs). It's rather like a "gift extending from the main story", so to speak...
>>283433041Bad TL 13/>Shimizu: The director said "Since we've gone to all this trouble, I'd like to convey everything I wanted to in the main story through the ending" and that's how it came to be realised. In that sense, we made full use of the ending.>Yoda: It's especially clever how Rin and Madoka have become angels and demons, the complete opposite of their roles in the main story, it's just too brilliant...>Shimizu: Right, right (laugh). That was a performance that really "tickled the hearts of the fans.">Kimura: That was Okawa's particular insistence, wasn't it? Precisely because we are fans of both works, there are various little nods and references throughout. At the scenario writing stage, we didn't write that far ahead. And so, even though not everything was originally written into the script, it kept getting added bit by bit. When I saw the finished version, I thought, "They've gone this far!">"Oh, that character's here!?" I exclaimed in surprise. >Yoda: That's right. The way they handled the supporting characters was brilliant, wasn't it? That's nothing but "love", I suppose.>Kimura: I believe that too was something only director Okawa could have achieved.>Speaking of director Okawa. The scene where Tomoticket sprouted from the Aikatsu card was pretty amazing too, wasn't it? That single piece seemed to encapsulate the entire history of both works and the collective sentiments of their fans.
>>283433063Bad TL 14/END>Yoda: Personally, it was the scene that surprised me the most. Actually, that wasn't in the initial scenario stage.>What!?>Yoda: At first, it was an exchange between PriTickets and Aikatsu Cards. Then just as I thought that scene had come on, a Tomoticket appeared (laughs). "Is this alright…?" I thought. >Kimura: Well, yes, that's true. Fundamentally, cards are each other's merchandise, so logically speaking, touching another company's cards is absolutely No Good. If the so-called Data Carddass or PriPara cabinets were still operating in real time, it would probably have been difficult. I think it was precisely because it was made at this time that it could be elevated as a visual expression...>Yoda: When that moment finally arrived, I think it brought tears to everyone's eyes. "You're kidding me" they'd say.>Kimura: That proposal is something we simply could not put forward ourselves. Fundamentally, I've removed such possibilities from my mind. That was Okawa who put forward that proposal, driven by the sentiment: "As a director and as a fan, I want to create what I myself would like to see." And then I thought "Oh, I see!" (laughs). >Yoda: The relevant parties at each company accepted it as a good idea. That's what makes this project so wonderful.
>>283433091Thanks for the TL! Really continuing the trend of having really cool interviews, I love it.>Kimura: Well, yes, that's true. Fundamentally, cards are each other's merchandise, so logically speaking, touching another company's cards is absolutely No Good. If the so-called Data Carddass or PriPara cabinets were still operating in real time, it would probably have been difficult. It's interesting that out of everything, this is what they considered to be the iffiest part of the project. Goes to show that some business sensibilities are pretty difficult to deal with, eh...
