As summer vacation begins, Anna and Mikuru go to help the student council president Rei out in taking care of the flowerbeds. This brings back Kurea's memories of her time at the London branch, where she looked after its garden. As their work progresses, Rei realizes that the zinnia blossoms, and only the zinnia blossoms, which had been in full bloom not too long ago, have all been cut from their stems. When Kurea investigates the scene with her Pre-Kit Mirror Loupe, she finds that the culprit had cut the zinnia stems with the blade, and had left footprints nearby the flowerbed.

Found an interesting JP research on the philosophy of Precure, how it changed and how Precure's dynamic with the villains also changed.
Please bear with me, it's just 10 pages but the 4chan limit might make it like 11-16 posts.

>1. Introduction
There are countless examples of entertainment works reflecting the values of the era in which they are created. This tendency is especially pronounced in works made for children. As Kimura Shisei points out, children's animation can be understood as a mechanism for presenting children with the social norms and ethical values necessary for living as adults, thereby serving as an agent of socialization (Kimura, 2018).

In other words, the heroes found in children's anime present the norms and ethics of their era to children simply through their very existence.
What kinds of values, then, do the heroes of Japanese children's animation embody?

When children in Japan think of contemporary "hero" works currently airing, they are likely to think of titles such as Anpanman, the Kamen Rider series, the Super Sentai series, and My Hero Academia, among many others. However, when it comes to female heroes, there is one franchise that has established an unrivaled position: Precure.

The magical-girl/action series Precure (also known as the Pretty Cure series) has been broadcast continuously from 2004 through 2022, spanning 19 years, making it an exceptionally long-running franchise for an anime aimed at young girls.

It has been noted that, compared with Sailor Moon, relatively few academic studies have examined the Precure series (Ishii, 2019). Although limited in number, previous studies include analyses that discuss Precure alongside other "girls' anime," such as Sailor Moon (Sukawa, 2013); analyses focusing on individual entries in the Precure franchise (Tomaru, 2019); and studies examining the franchise as a whole (Ueda & Isobe, 2020; Sakita, 2018; Kimura, 2018).

[1/?]

>>289924052
A lot of people assumed she is Mikuru's grandma, but things would also be interesting if she isn't...
>>
>>289924536
One notable finding from these studies is Sukawa's (2013) observation that transformation functions as a means of expressing and affirming the self. The study also found that female solidarity is portrayed positively, and that "maternal" care and compassion are associated with both female characters and father figures.

Tomaru (2019) points out that, although the portrayal of male characters in the Precure series has changed over time, caregiving and mothering are still firmly represented as women's roles.

Meanwhile, Kimura (2018) links the concept of "fighting" in girls' anime to "labor," arguing that the Precure series—by fully introducing girls into the traditionally male domain of combat—encourages girls to pursue diverse dreams and values hard work. In doing so, it functions as a mechanism of socialization that internalizes social norms compatible with a neoliberal society.

Building upon these previous studies, this paper focuses on one of the defining characteristics of the Precure series: the element of care.

Kimura identifies two fundamental characteristics of Precure. First, the protagonists are junior high school girls who transform into Precure warriors and fight enemies. Second, each heroine is partnered with a fairy-like being that grants her the mysterious power to transform. Kimura further argues that these fairy-like companions are frequently accompanied by an element of "care" (caregiving or looking after them), which can be understood as an expression of gender norms directed toward girls.

Focusing on this element of care, the present study aims to clarify how it has changed throughout the Precure series by examining the changing representations of "those who should be protected" and "those who should be saved," as well as the significance of these changes.

These periods are defined according to changes in the Toei Animation producer responsible for planning each series (Kato, 2012, p. 71). Although Precure is jointly produced by producers from Toei Animation, ADK, and Asahi Broadcasting Corporation, the individual often referred to as the "father of Precure" is Izumi Todo's first Toei Animation producer, Atsutoshi Washio. Accordingly, this study focuses on the succession of Toei Animation producers in order to examine the franchise's subsequent development.

The three periods are defined as follows:

Period I: The years during which Atsutoshi Washio served as producer.
Period II: 2009–2014, following the change in producer.
Period III: 2015–2020, beginning with the appointment of the first female Toei Animation producer in the history of the franchise.

Conceptually, these periods are characterized as follows.

Period I is described as the era of constructing the image of Precure, since it established what Precure would become.

Period II is the era of exploring the image of Precure, as it sought new interpretations of the franchise that differed from earlier entries.

Period III is the era of assigning explicit motifs, because from this point onward each annual series was built around a clear and concrete theme—such as "Princess," "Witch," or "Pâtissier" (Febri Special Issue, 2018, p. 116).
>Table 1. Transitions in Toei Animation Producers Across the Precure Series (pic-related)

The primary materials analyzed in this study are all episodes of the Precure television anime broadcast between 2004 and 2020. Every episode was viewed, and information relevant to the theme of care was transcribed. In addition, the analysis draws upon statements by staff members involved in the series, as found in publications such as the official mook Precure Pia and Precure Syndrome!, which contains interviews with 25 individuals associated with the franchise.

>3. Period I: Care for Those Immediately Before One's Eyes
>3.1 Fighting in the Precure Series

One of the defining characteristics of the Precure series is combat. The franchise was created under the concept of being "a girls' series incorporating action elements" (Febri Special Issue, 2018, p. 115). Likewise, Kimura identifies as the foremost characteristic of the Precure series the fact that "junior high school girls transform into Precure and fight enemies," arguing that the heroines of the series enter battle with a clear sense of purpose and determination (Kimura, 2018).

This is illustrated in Episode 5 of Yes! Pretty Cure 5. Karen Minazuki, one of the main characters, sees the other Precure backed into a corner by the enemy and attempts to transform out of a sense of obligation, thinking, "In the end, it looks like I'm the one who has to do it." However, her transformation fails.

In the following episode (Episode 6), a fairy explains that "you cannot become a Precure unless you truly wish from the bottom of your heart to become one." Only when Karen sincerely wishes, of her own free will, "I want to help everyone," is she finally able to transform into a Precure.^1

In other words, the qualification to become a Precure lies in one's own will. The reason these heroines continue to fight is always rooted in a motivation they themselves have discovered.

From the above, it can be said that battles in the Precure series are fought only after the heroines themselves have found meaning and purpose in doing so. Furthermore, an important question arises: Who—or what—is the object that the heroines seek to protect and save through battle?

To clarify the nature of care in the series, it is necessary to determine what the heroines are trying to protect and rescue through their fighting. Accordingly, the following sections focus on how the objects of protection and salvation in the Precure series' battles change across each of the periods.

3.2 Fighting to Protect the Fairies

In the previous section, interviews were cited emphasizing the importance of the Precure's own will. In practice, however, it is difficult to say that the protagonists of the first Precure series, Futari wa Pretty Cure, initially discover a special motivation on their own that makes them worthy of becoming Precure. In the first episode, the two heroines happen to encounter fairies from another world, and almost immediately afterward enemies suddenly appear. Prompted by the fairies, they are transformed into the legendary warriors, the Precure.

Later, in Episode 3, the fairy Mepple explains the role of the Precure:
"We want you to protect us from the Dotsuku Zone (the enemy organization). That is the mission of the legendary warriors, the Precure, as passed down in the Garden of Light."
In other words, in the first Precure series, the heroines are transformed by the fairies and fight to protect the fairies. The series explicitly defines the mission of the Precure as protecting the fairies.

Throughout Period I, during which Atsutoshi Washio served as producer, this aspect of "fighting for the sake of the fairies" is particularly prominent.

Even in the third series, Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star, which introduced an entirely new setting and cast of characters, the mission of the Precure is explained as protecting the Seven Springs and the World Tree (located in the kingdom inhabited by the fairies) from the Land of Destruction, Dark Fall (the enemy organization). Here again, the objects of the Precure's protection are the fairies and the world in which they live.

Likewise, in the fourth installment, Yes! Pretty Cure 5, the protagonist's personal dream is to restore the homeland of the fairy Coco, which has been destroyed by the enemy organization.

Thus, throughout Period I, the Precure are portrayed as figures deeply committed to the world of the fairies.

>3.3 The Respective Positions of the Fairies and the Enemies

In Period I, battle consists of defeating the enemies for the sake of the fairies. What deserves particular attention here is that the fairies and the enemies occupy completely opposite positions within the narrative.

The defining characteristic of the fairies is that they are portrayed as weak, benevolent beings who must be protected. Throughout the series, the fairies come from fantasy worlds into the human world, where they provide the ordinary heroines with the opportunity to transform into Precure. However, the fairies themselves possess little to no combat ability. Their primary role is to grant the Precure their powers, guide them into battle, and highlight the heroines' strength.

Accordingly, they are depicted as objects of protection: they are designed as small, adorable creatures modeled after animals, and they often require the kind of "care" associated with looking after infants or very young children.

By contrast, the enemies of Period I are consistently portrayed as absolute evil, whose sole purpose is to be defeated.

The antagonistic forces introduced at the beginning of the franchise represent easily recognizable concepts of evil. In Futari wa Pretty Cure and Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart, they embody Darkness, while in Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star they represent Destruction. They are depicted as terrifying beings entirely undeserving of sympathy.

Moreover, because these enemies originate from a world of darkness and are portrayed as inherently evil, it is considered entirely justified for the heroines to defeat and annihilate them.

The Precure subsequently battle numerous enemies, and in Futari wa Pretty Cure, Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart, and Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star, the story concludes with the destruction of both the enemy commanders and the ultimate mastermind, thereby restoring peace to the world.

The relationship between the heroines and their enemies in these works can therefore be described as one of rewarding good and punishing evil.

A particularly noteworthy point is that the leader of the enemy forces is ultimately destroyed. This appears to strongly reflect producer Atsutoshi Washio's own philosophy.

Washio's interviews reveal that he viewed enemy characters as embodiments of unreasonable evil. He remarked:

"If you come to understand the enemy characters, can they still be considered enemy characters? Since this is, after all, an action series, I think it's important that viewers can enjoy seeing the enemies decisively defeated." (Kato, 2012, p. 129)

This suggests that, from Washio's perspective, what mattered most was that the enemies existed as opponents whom the combat heroines were meant to defeat.

As discussed above, the works of Period I reflect a worldview in which good and evil are clearly divided into two opposing categories. The fairies and the Precure represent good, while the antagonistic forces represent evil, standing in direct opposition to one another.

Within this worldview, the element of care is directed primarily from the heroines toward the fairies.

The fairies and the Precure belong to the same side—that of good—making the fairies beings with whom the heroines identify. At the same time, the fairies are depicted as vulnerable beings: they are in distress, oppressed, and incapable of resisting the injustice inflicted upon them.

Thus, the form of care portrayed during the early years of the Precure series can be understood as the idea that one ought to contribute to helping those immediately before one's eyes who are suffering within the society to which one belongs.

>4. Period II: Care for Society as a Whole
>4.1 The Expansion of Those Worth Protecting

During Period I, the enemies primarily attacked the fairies and the objects belonging to them. In Period II, however, the enemies begin carrying out indiscriminate attacks against ordinary people, transforming the Precure into heroes for everyone, whose role is to protect the general public.

At the same time that civilians become involved in the conflict, the scale of the battles also expands. In Period I, battles generally took place in a closed space involving only the Precure, the fairies, and the enemies. By contrast, in Period II, the scope of the battles grows large enough to encompass ordinary people.

In HappinessCharge Precure!, the Precure exist all over the world and are portrayed as internationally recognized heroines admired by girls everywhere. This further demonstrates that the sphere of the Precure's activities has expanded.

The mission of the Precure also changes during this period. Rather than simply protecting the fairies, they are entrusted with responsibilities such as "We have to save the world" and "Please protect this world." Fighting for everyone becomes the defining mission of the Precure.

Another noteworthy development is the increasing emphasis placed on human emotions in battle.

In the works of Period I, combat generally consisted of hand-to-hand battles against monsters created by the enemies or their commanders. In Period II, however, a recurring pattern emerges in which human emotions themselves transform into monsters.

[8/?]
>>
>>289924613
>Fresh was when they tried something new and exciting
>GoPri was the decline
And I got called a shitposter for stating that.
>>
>>289924813
Beginning with HeartCatch Precure!, the first series to adopt this approach, many works in Period II feature monsters born from negative human emotions. In DokiDoki! Precure, for example, selfishness—a feeling possessed by everyone—manifests as monsters known as Jikochū. In HappinessCharge Precure!, Saiarks are monsters that rampage by feeding on the unhappiness sealed within people's hearts.

Thus, one characteristic of Period II is that the focus of the Precure's concern shifts from the fantasy world of fairies to something much more grounded in reality: the human heart.

This movement toward greater realism is also reflected in how battles themselves are portrayed.

Throughout the Precure series, enemy attacks frequently result in the destruction of buildings and other property. During Period I, however, producer Atsutoshi Washio explained the guiding principle behind such scenes:

"Even if buildings are destroyed, once the battle is over everything is always restored. The idea is that when the evil influence is removed, things return to the way they originally were." (Kato, 2012, p. 129)
In other words, the franchise operated under the motto that everything damaged in battle would always be restored afterward.

Fresh Pretty Cure!, however, deliberately adopted the opposite approach: destroyed objects were not restored.

Junji Shimizu, the series director of Fresh Pretty Cure!, explained this decision:

"There was an opinion that if buildings were repaired immediately, it would feel as though the battle had taken place only in a dream. We decided to leave the buildings destroyed in order to convey the tension of battles taking place in the real world." (Precure Pia, 2011, p. 102)

During this period, the Precure are portrayed as saving real society as a whole, and the object of their protection becomes both broader in scope and more firmly rooted in reality.
>4.2 The Enemy as an Object of Salvation and Purification

The expanding concern for salvation seen in Period II eventually comes to encompass the enemy forces themselves.

During Period I—the era of constructing the image of the Precure—the heroines triumphantly defeated their enemies, making the term "defeat" an appropriate description of their actions.

By contrast, in Period II, defeating enemies comes to be described as "purification" (jĹŤka), and there are many cases in which the heroines actually save their opponents.

A particularly striking example appears in HeartCatch Precure!.

Episode 40 depicts in detail the purification of Sasorina, one of the enemy commanders. Throughout the story, Sasorina is repeatedly struck by the Precure's attacks, gradually undergoing a change in personality. She increasingly falls into deep thought, sighs frequently, and eventually questions the evil deeds of her own side, asking her fellow commanders:

"Do you think it's really okay for us to keep going like this?"

Her comrades explain her behavior by saying:
"She's probably been exposed to the Precure's holy power too much, and her evilness has faded."

and

"She no longer has the will to fight."

In other words, the Precure's attacks are portrayed as possessing a purifying effect.

Near the end of Episode 40, Sasorina appears to vanish after exhausting all of her strength. Immediately afterward, however, the scene shifts to a secluded mountain sanatorium, where a woman strongly implied to be Sasorina awakens and quietly remarks:

"I feel like I've been having a bad dream for a very long time."

She is then shown gently caring for animals.

This process of purification and salvation is applied to many enemy characters throughout Period II, and compared with Period I, remarkably few enemy commanders actually perish.

The same tendency applies to the final villains.

In most cases, the story concludes with the Precure purifying or saving the ultimate antagonist.

For example, in Suite Precure, the final villain, Noise, is destroyed by the Precure's attack but is subsequently reincarnated as a small bird, accepted by the heroines, and allowed to live peacefully.

Likewise, in HappinessCharge Precure!, the final villain, Red, acknowledges his defeat, repents, and returns to his own planet.

Stories in which the final antagonist reforms, the Precure reconcile with their former enemies, and the heroines ultimately accept the existence of those enemies are among the defining characteristics of Period II.

As discussed above, during Period II the Precure assume responsibility not only for defeating their enemies but also for purifying and saving them.

The range of those whom the heroines seek to protect and rescue expands to include even the enemy.

Once the heroines' reason for fighting becomes "everyone," the object of their care can be understood as society at large, including even those who stand against them.
>4.3 Fairies as Dependable Supporters

As the scope of those whom the heroines are expected to save expands, so too does the burden placed upon them. Correspondingly, the fairy characters gradually evolve from beings in need of protection into dependable supporters, seemingly alleviating that burden. Compared with Period I, fairies are increasingly portrayed as mature and reliable individuals in terms of their personalities.

To examine this change, let us first consider the character profiles published on the series' official website.

Getting pumped and dumped by Jett-senpai...
>>
>>289924924
Among the works of Period I, very few fairy characters are described in terms of their personalities. In fact, the only notable example is Lulun from Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart, who is described as "gentle and somewhat of a crybaby." Such a characterization can hardly be described as portraying her as a dependable figure.

Beginning in Period II, however, official character profiles increasingly include descriptions of each fairy's personality. DokiDoki! Precure, in particular, contains several examples in which fairies are explicitly presented as reliable companions. On the official website, Charles is described as "a hard worker with a passionate heart," while Raquel is described as "level-headed and dependable."

Similarly, in HappinessCharge Precure!, the fairy Ribbon is described as "more reliable than Hime (the heroine)," explicitly emphasizing that she is more mature than the protagonist herself.

Of course, there are also several fairy characters portrayed as babies, such as Popuri from HeartCatch Precure! and Ai-chan from DokiDoki! Precure. However, even these infant characters are endowed with extraordinary abilities. Popuri possesses powerful defensive abilities, while Ai-chan can fly and use several mysterious supernatural powers. Thus, despite their infantile appearance, they are by no means powerless.^2

The maturation of the fairy characters is not limited to their personalities.

This development is also evident during battle. In Period I, the fairies' primary role was to grant power to the heroines—that is, to entrust all combat responsibilities to the Precure. During Period II, however, an increasing number of fairy characters take on the role of guiding and supporting the Precure by making use of special abilities that the heroines themselves do not possess.

One example is the fairy Coupé from HeartCatch Precure!.

[12/?]

>>289924731

He is the first fairy in the series to participate directly in combat and, at times, possesses fighting abilities that even surpass those of the heroine Precure themselves. Within the story, Coupé is usually portrayed as a comical mascot character with a rather goofy expression. However, he is capable of transforming into a handsome human man, dramatically appearing whenever the Precure are in danger and rescuing them.

Like Coupé, Period II sees a clear increase in characters who actively support the Precure during combat.

As discussed above, the fairies—who were themselves the objects of care during Period I—gradually become dependable supporters.

As the heroines' concern for salvation expands, the need to care for the fairies diminishes. At the same time, the focus of care shifts toward "everyone," including even the enemy.

From this, it can be concluded that the concept of care in the Precure series evolves into a broader ideal: one should contribute to the well-being of all others, including those who are different from oneself.
>5. Period III: Care for Self-Realization
>5.1 Moving Beyond the "Hero for Everyone"

As discussed in the previous chapter, the scale of the Precure's concern for salvation expanded during Period II, establishing the image of the heroines as "heroes for everyone." At this point, it is worth introducing an interview with Masato Mitsuka, the series director of Maho Girls Precure!, the second work of Period III.
>5.2 The Enemy as a Symbol of Diversity

The relationship between the heroines and their enemies also changes.

In Period II, enemies were portrayed as individuals who could be understood through dialogue or purification. Through the efforts of the Precure, they could abandon their wrongdoing, repent, and ultimately be saved.

>>289925017
While many examples of the Precure saving enemy characters continue to appear during Period III, an important new narrative pattern also emerges: stories deliberately conclude with the heroines and their enemies remaining unable to fully understand one another.

This mutual lack of understanding is particularly evident in the final confrontations between the Precure and the ultimate villains.

One representative example is the final battle in Episode 50 of Go! Princess Precure between Cure Flora and Close.

Close is an enemy commander who appears from the beginning of the series. After being defeated once, he returns and unexpectedly reappears in the final episode as the ultimate antagonist.

Ordinarily, all four Precure would combine their strength to defeat the final enemy. Instead, Cure Flora approaches Close alone in an attempt to speak with him one-on-one.

While fighting, they exchange the following dialogue:

Close: "I'll make you despair again and again, until you finally give up. As long as dreams exist, despair will never disappear. Forever."

...

Cure Flora: "You're right. Despair never disappears. It's everywhere. I've gone through so many painful experiences. But I can't pretend they never happened. No... I don't even want to erase them.

Both my dreams and my despair have shaped who I am...

Happiness and suffering always exist side by side. That's exactly why I am who I am today.

Maybe dreams are made up of all of it—the painful things, the sad things, everything together."

Close: "Be quiet!"

(He throws a furious punch. Cure Flora deflects the attack and places her hand against Close's chest. At that moment, the surroundings are bathed in a gentle pink light.)

Cure Flora: "Despair will never disappear!"

Close: "That's right. It'll keep appearing forever."

Cure Flora: "And I'll keep overcoming it. Sometimes I'll lose. But I'll always face forward again. Because we have..."

Close: "...Dreams?"

(Cure Flora smiles and nods.)

Yes 5 is when they tried something new and Doki was the start of a decline so yeah, you are.
>>
>>289925063
Cure Flora: "Dreams can't disappear either. As long as despair exists, dreams will continue to shine forever."

Close: "Strong, kind, and beautiful... huh."

(He sighs.)

"I'm done fighting you. I can't keep this up anymore. I'll disappear—for now. Farewell... until next time."

(He ascends into the sky of his own accord and vanishes.)Âł

What is particularly noteworthy in this exchange is that Cure Flora never rejects Close's philosophy.

On the contrary, she accepts his assertion that "despair never disappears." Rather than denying despair, she resolves to continue pursuing her dreams despite it.

There is no indication that she intends to reform or convert Close. Indeed, Close never abandons his own beliefs. Although he decides to stop fighting the Precure, he leaves after declaring that he will someday return.

The story therefore concludes without the heroine and the enemy ever truly understanding one another or achieving reconciliation.

This pattern—where enemy characters do not repent—is especially prominent in Maho Girls Precure! and Healin' GoodPrecure. Like many of the villains from Period I, numerous enemies simply disappear without undergoing redemption.

Likewise, stories in which major antagonists, like Close, retain their convictions before quietly vanishing also become increasingly common during Period III. Unlike Period I, they are not simply destroyed. Unlike Period II, neither are they redeemed and accepted by the heroines. Instead, a new conclusion is introduced: they disappear from the heroines' lives and continue existing separately.

This becomes one of the defining characteristics of the enemy's role during Period III.

If the defining feature of Period II was that dialogue ultimately led enemies to repent and reconcile with the heroines, then the defining feature of Period III is the affirmation of mutual incomprehension.

I never noticed it but yes, early precure has a distinct "coming of age" and "call to action" with the fairies. Later cures are more intrinsically motivated, and I think that was a good choice. Also I love the actual analysis going on here. This is the type of shit I live for. Too many youtubers have the most surface level take on media and half their videos are recapping the plot anyways. I will have to rewatch Yes5 because it's been a while and can't remember if Karen actually showed any nuance in her first henshin attempt, but I like that this is article is diving deep into the precure zeitgeist.

Even when the heroines engage in dialogue with their enemies, those enemies neither reform nor reconcile with them easily.

Instead, Period III emphasizes that the enemies possess their own beliefs, values, and ways of life. In this sense, the series comes to embrace diversity in its broadest meaning: the otherness of those who are fundamentally different from oneself is acknowledged and respected.
Mitsuka:
In recent years, the Precure series has increasingly leaned toward being a "hero story," where ordinary girls stand up because they feel they have to fight—whether for fairies in need or against enemies who bring suffering to people.

But personally, I don't think Precure necessarily has to be confined to only that. I thought it would also be worthwhile for transformation to serve as a more direct expression of the girls' own feelings, allowing them to confront the obstacles before them for their own sake.

In the end, that may still lead to saving the world, but I wanted to explore an approach other than constructing the story around Precure being driven solely by a sense of duty.

(Maho Girls Precure! Official Complete Book, 2017, p. 82)

Mitsuka points to what he sees as the excessive burden of the "hero" role that had come to characterize the protagonists during Period II, and attempts to return to a more fundamental conception of the heroine—one who fights for herself.

As this interview suggests, the defining feature of Period III is its focus on how the heroine herself wishes to live and what she wishes to become.

In the previous chapter, Period III was characterized as the era of assigning motifs, and in most cases the motif of each series closely corresponds to the ideal future envisioned by its protagonist.

For example, the first work of Period III, Go! Princess Precure, naturally adopts the motif of princesses, while the heroine herself dreams of becoming a princess.

>>
>>289925162
How the fuck did Luluka look more submissive and breedable with blue? Holy fuck.
>>
>>289925186
Likewise, in KirakiraPrecure A La Mode, whose motif is sweets, the protagonist aspires to become a pâtissier. In StarTwinkle Precure, whose motif is outer space, the heroine ultimately becomes an astronaut in the final episode.

Thus, the heroines themselves possess a clear image of the person they wish to become, and by transforming into Precure whose motifs align with those aspirations, they pursue self-realization through battle.

Rather than fighting for everyone, as in Period II, the heroines of Period III can be said to fight for themselves.
>5.3 Liberating the Precure from the Burden of Their Role

The reappearance in Period III of enemies who do not repent and endings without reconciliation—as seen in Period I—suggests that the production staff reflected on the extent to which they had burdened the Precure with the responsibility of "salvation" during Period II.^4

In recent years, I think Precure has often ended with the heroines reconciling with the enemies and saving them.

I believe that's a wonderful thing.

However, when that becomes intertwined with the social pressures and expectations placed on girls in today's society, it may end up cornering them.

Without realizing it, it can turn into the expectation that "because you're a girl, you have to be kind," leaving girls vulnerable to being taken advantage of by bad people and ultimately getting hurt.

Of course, reconciliation and salvation are admirable ideals. But if we become so committed to them that we end up sacrificing our own hearts, then we've lost sight of what really matters...

(Animage, 2021, p. 70)

This passage explains that the emphasis on salvation and reconciliation during Period II had come to place expectations of self-sacrifice and universal compassion upon the heroines.

The Precure of Period II fought for everyone, and were also entrusted with the task of purifying and saving even their enemies.

>6. Conclusion

This study has examined how the values associated with care have changed over the eighteen-year history of the Precure series by dividing the franchise into three distinct periods.

During Period I, care was directed primarily from the heroines toward the fairies. The works reflected a worldview of rewarding good and punishing evil, in which good and evil were clearly divided into two opposing categories. The fairies and the Precure represented the side of good, while the enemy forces represented evil, and the two existed in irreconcilable opposition.

In Period II, the range of those who were to be protected and saved expanded considerably. The heroines' reason for fighting became "everyone," and even the enemy came to be included among those deserving salvation. Within the narratives, human emotions became the central focus, and the boundary between good and evil was portrayed as something that could easily be crossed. Fairies and Precure, belonging to the side of good, were now capable of guiding even those on the side of evil toward goodness.

At this stage, the object of care had expanded into society at large, including even the enemy. The Precure were no longer permitted to abandon anyone. Consequently, the value of care within the Precure series evolved into the belief that one should contribute to the well-being of all others, including those who are different from oneself.

In Period III, however, this greatly expanded norm of care came to be reconsidered. It was viewed as one that demanded excessive self-sacrifice and had drifted away from the heroine originally envisioned at the beginning of the franchise—a heroine who fought according to her own will.

During this period, the primary object of care becomes the self—that is, the heroine herself.

The fairies acquire combat abilities and cease to exist merely as beings in need of care. The role of the enemies also changes.

[18/?]
>>
How the fuck do I end up with gachaslop tribalistic losers here of all places
>>
>>289925271
Evil is not able to create anything new, it can only distort and destroy what has been invented or made by the forces of good.
>>
>>289925271
For the heroine, it becomes acceptable that there are things she cannot forgive or cannot understand. There is no longer any obligation to force reconciliation or salvation. She fights not for someone else, but for herself. Even acts of caring for others are performed because she herself chooses to do so.

At this point, the traditional yardstick of good and evil has effectively disappeared. The heroine, the enemies, and the fairies alike are each entrusted with making choices based simply on how they themselves wish to live.

An important point to note is that this concept of "for oneself" was actually present from the very birth of the Precure franchise.

The Precure series was originally created with the intention of empowering girls. In order to portray the Precure as strong, independent, and resilient women, it was first necessary, as in Period I, to emphasize their strength by showing them protecting weaker beings. Later, as in Period II, it became necessary to have them save society itself on an increasingly grand scale.

Yet, in the process of constructing the image of the girl hero, the heroines came to sacrifice themselves for others, creating a dilemma in which the original emphasis on fighting for oneself was gradually left behind.

Even today, the stereotype that care is something women perform remains deeply entrenched. Indeed, professions such as childcare and nursing continue to be overwhelmingly occupied by women.

It is therefore highly significant that Precure—a franchise originally born from the idea that "girls want to be able to cut loose and fight too," challenging such stereotypes—ultimately came to burden its heroines with excessive expectations of care.

Might this not also reflect reality? As women enter broader spheres of society, they are often expected to continue fulfilling traditional feminine roles in addition to demonstrating their own abilities.

>>

>>
>>289925322
The contemporary Precure series can be understood as overcoming this dilemma. By rejecting excessive demands for care, it arrives at a heroine who fights for herself.

The fairies, once helpless beings in need of protection, become companions who fight alongside the heroine. The enemy forces likewise cease to be figures whom the heroine is necessarily expected to save or reconcile with.

The ideas that emerge from this development—the importance of cooperation and the recognition of the otherness of those who are different from oneself—may also help relieve the burden of care traditionally placed upon women in our own society, contributing to the realization of a society in which everyone is free to live authentically as themselves.
Note: This article is a revised version of Natsuki Imura's undergraduate thesis, Changes in the Values Surrounding "Care" in the Precure Series: Focusing on the Heroine, the Fairies, and the Enemies (Ochanomizu University, 2021). The collection and analysis of the materials were carried out by Imura, while Kodama supervised the project as a whole.

If youre really such a mongoloid thay you can't formulate your own opinions, then please at least just stop referring to other people and places all the time and just parrot their opinions like a normal moron. You aren't making your supposed opinions more valid by saying they are shared by this person or that hroup; youre making your post into a de facto shit post.

There's definitely some minor development in movies, but it's not like you need Mofurun's development in the Maho movie to enjoy Maho, as an example. A little extra fleshing out in the movie is neat, but having the ending to a character's arc built up inside of the series inside of the movie instead is dumb (especially if it's in a questionably canonical mass crossover).

Your filename aside, in otona they were mid 20s. It is understandable they were pumping babies out. And yes5 had 3 official ships and didnt want to fuck those over. The fact that Saki had a no name fiance and Mai had a boyfriend she broke up with was a surprise. But the SD girls will be 40s. If they dont have kids, they probably wont ever. And that would be woof. Assuming Mikuru isnt the anna mom, they could do a Elena situation where it is likely she and mikuru had kids but they wont ever confirm it despite there being some mystery kids (I dont think they ever confirmed who those two kids were in the SD epilogue in outside material).
Luluka is 100% going to be career SD woman probably head of agency.

Probably going to be something like how Hikari meet Akane in Max Heart (she's just walking and then they saw each other, minus the mind control part).
You're too worried about the minutiae of a franchise that doesn't focus on that often. How fast did Sora learn japanese? Does that imply Sora is smarter than the average /a/non? Well it doesn't matter that much, she just learned it.
If Kurea already had a background on making pastries then it's even easier to justify.

I am coming around to TR. It tries to be fun more than anything else. Also, ugly seafoam green aside, the school life stuff is refreshing compared to SD which has very little. I remember seeing some of Anna and Mikuru's classmates and thinking they looked too unique and would get votm episodes. lmao

Yay, I love crack theory time! Based on the episode preview for episode 29, I hypothesize that the final boss is an extra-dimensional entity who intentionally spread propaganda (lies) to sever the bond between humanity and fairies long ago so it could more easily seize control of the world. It gave Usonoir his armor and Arcana her Shadow form.
Oh, and that all fairies in Anna's time are dead, or Anna came from a timeline that never had fairies in the first place.

Depends if you mean the "wow" the established fans or getting like mainstream even outside of the bubble.
I think if you get a consistent high-quality production like GoPri fans would love it.
As for popping the bubble... I guess it would need to get more like "regular anime" with more intricate plots and unorthodox narratives, which honestly exists in the form of Kamen Rider.

It's what replaced Sentai, First part was Space Sheriff GAVAN's sequel, second part is Pokemon Trainer red catches Godzilla.

Seriously, why is it flopping with every objective financial metric? Even fucking Gavan reboot did better? What the fuck

I sprayed a black widow spider to kill it, and it ran away and looked like it was in pain. Now I'm extremely regretful. I don't want things to be in pain, even if they are poisonous spiders.

I don't think the Eclair reveal/mystery was conducive to the show's format and I also think Luluka being an Otaku goddess does not resonate with the actual audience who probably just sees her as being a bully.

Also Anna and Michuru are kind of boring, even in terms of lead precure. There's like zero emotional or interpersonal drama between them or their families, we in fact know very little about either of those. We probably know more about the personal lives of their non-cure friends than them.

It has nothing to do with the story or characters.
It's because previous years had multiple spin-offs, and the Eclair main toy was delayed AND it was a perfume rather than a traditional toy, which is going to alienate some moms wanting something straightforward like a plastic prop.

Moms hate perfumes too, picture having a kid that just sprays that shit on everything, and it probably doesn't even smell that good. It probably smells like blueberry ass or whatever food coloring Toei puts in those bottles to keep kids from trying to drink it

>multiple spin-offs
The 10 million spin-offs of course, the damage control is incredible.
Starzzzzzz Defective is doing badly while otaku spent MONTHS overhyping Arcana Shadow as the second return of god.
The reality check that just happened with Bandai and Toei numbers is so so sweet.

Did the spider empathize with all the insects trapped in its web? You killed a heartless killer and avenged hundreds of innocent lives.
>>
>>289940338
It's more of the painful part. Killing it, sure, but torture is something I never want to do.

I appreciate the sentiment, though.

>blah blah blah
Wanting to simplify reality with schizo rambling isn't going to work.
The franchise had more projects going on and it resulted in more profit, I'm sure even something as obvious as the Idol theme probably helped to enhance the consumerism spirit as well, since it activates the "I need to support my oshi" instincts.
So no, using the end result to "validate" your delusions is retarded.

Their projections show that they expect Q2 (fiscal, Q3 calendar) to be twice as strong as Q1, and the entire year combined to be stronger than the previous one.
