I’m into my computer science degree and it just dawned on me. All the shit that I’m studying I can literally study on my own pace WAY more efficiently. But because I have to keep track of assignments and quizzes for multiple classes (that may or may not be useful to my career) it gets much harder to balance since I’m working too. I end up having no time to explore what I can REALLY do with programming. I really don’t see the point of going to college beyond needing it for my resume. I’m thinking of quitting because it feels like going to college is pointless. I can’t network anyway because all the people around me are Gen Z with no social skills. Is the degree really that important?
You need proof you know what you are talking about. A crackhead homeless dude could just walk up and spout random shit in an interview and it'd be the same as you, unless you have a degree. Yes you're a computer genius, but this degree even if it is boringly easy needs to be done. If need be do some extra curricular activities on the side, or go join some computer clubs in your university.
>>33924327as a guy wgo started his career without degree, yes tou need one.i am studying again because i couldnt advance anymore.unless you are entrepreneurial enough to boostrap a business, you need a degree.
>>33924327I dropped out in '99 when the tech bubble was happening. I hated school. I've been working ever since. Can you do it today? Probably, might be harder though. All it takes is your first job or real project, then nobody cares about it.
if you have a good portfolio or examples of work, it doesn't matter. Why wouldn't you want to find places to work while going to school so you have something for your resume
>>33924327I just finished my degree in CS and you're exactly right, self-directed study is much more efficient. I found the lectures always skipped over the topics I actually found interesting, and even in the final year group assignments always have the last minute rush. If you're in your first year, I advise you to quit. get a subscription to a platform where you can learn programming yourself, and do a short course in business/entrepreneurship. AI can fill in the gaps for you, most of them write error-free code now. Most programming jobs these days require literal slave labour to even have your application considered (they give you an assignment like in university), they don't trust that having a degree listed on your resume means anything.

>>33924327Theoretically you can collect certifications to prove you know the stuff. They are worthless in the job market where I live. CCNA CCNP A+ Net+ Sec+ none of them will get you a job, in fact off of them will not get you a job.You mistake the purpose of college as "learning" or "skills" in reality all they care about is some ability to show up on time reliably, minimal intro level project management skills, and having a ton of student loan debt so you can't just say "F this place" and walk out. Everything else can be learned on the job, generally.
The multitasking, organizational skills and networking are more important than what you can do with code. College is valuable because you have to do it all to succeed. If you can't that's because you're not good enough.
