I’m 22, and male pattern baldness runs deep in my family. Most of the men in my family started losing their hair in their late 20s or early 30s. I started at 19. At first I didn’t think much of it, but by 20 it became impossible to ignore. My hairline crept higher, I started shedding like crazy in the shower, and the sides of my scalp began thinning out.

I’ve tried a bunch of treatments like oils, shampoos, and random “miracle” mixes, but nothing has really worked. I can’t afford a transplant, and genetics clearly aren’t on my side. Right now I’d say I’m around a Norwood 2a, but I know where this is going.

I’ve accepted that at some point I’ll probably have to shave it all off and move on. But I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t bother me. It’s hard not to think I’ll lose a few points in attractiveness or that people might take me less seriously without a full head of hair.

What makes it worse is how much we underestimate the role hair plays in our lives and our sense of identity. It’s something we grow up with, shape our image around, and see in the mirror every day without thinking twice. Then one day it starts slipping away, and you realize how much of yourself was attached to it. Having to say goodbye to that part of you feels strange, almost like losing a small piece of who you were. It’s hard, and honestly, kind of depressing.

For those of you who’ve gone through it, how did you actually come to terms with it? How do you stop caring about something that feels so tied to how you see yourself?

So you didn't even think of Rogaine?
You know that stuff you can find at Wal-Mart?
I'm 35 and started going bald this year after years of having long hair and didn't notice until I had to shave it all of before gall bladder surgery (because getting in and out of bed with 4 holes in your abdomen is hard enough)

Though here's some hope for all of us

This. OP, you only tried bullshit oils and voodoo shaman methods of keeping your hair. Did you ever considered going to a dermatologist?

It's not hard. Its practically a questionnaire about yourself and what your body is vurnable to.

being 20 in America is like being 16 anywhere else, can drive a vehicle, marry and have a family, but can't drink alcohol.
