I turned 25 recently it's not over for me but I really need to start busting my ass. I've been huffing mad hopium+copium recently and wanting to get a decent career and get my life on track but I keep hearing about how fucked the economy is, people complaining about how they can't afford to live etc etc (im an amerimutt) It's funny because a lot of these doomer videos on youtube of guys saying this kind of thing are either guys in their mid 20s like me who have never done anything but definitely could just start right now or 30-35+ millenials who have somehow gotten to the age they are now with no skills education or anything to show for their years of life and are complaining they can't make enough money. Yeah sure the economy is rough, no one is doing incredible basically no one can buy a house or afford brand new cars. Whatever lolI was doing mental math at work today of what it would look like to be able to live without family (we all work and pitch in) and ok rent is pretty bad a place that doesn't have a perma roach infestation junkie/human garbage neighbors and maybe its own washer/dryer is gonna cost minimum like 1600/month where I live and then just going by the 1/3rd rule i need to make effectively about 57.6k a year (after taxes) to afford it comfortably which is sort of absurd but achievable. I don't think t he economy is THAT fucked that you can't have a decent life if you can actually apply yourself. I don't wanna be super rich I just want to be able to live comfortably and maybe buy a few guns and play some vidya. What do you think/what is your experience and what advice can you offer me in this regard? Is it really that bad out there economically?
I'm 10 years older than you and managed to buy a house a couple years back. I've had to change jobs a few times when things didn't pan out, but I'd say it's possible to make a living, but not at the level people really want. You'll probably be using a rule of 1/2s instead of 1/3s with your expenses since most jobs seem to pay around 50k until you can move up.

I've been through the useless dotcom crash, the 2008 crash, and you were ALWAYS still able to get the mcwagie job and a $500 apartment somewhere. this trump economy is without doubt the worst anyone alive has been around to see in terms of not being able to get to square one if you want to
The best thing I ever did for myself was work out what my maximum monthly saving potential was. Then figure out if I could get it higher. Once you've identified your essential living costs and where the luxury spends are - you can recalibrate. There are a lot of small changes that on their own are pointless but as part of larger package of savings do add up. From there you can begin estimating saving trajectories and also begin plotting your next moves because you will very quickly realise you need more money. Theres also a rather cold but necessary lowering of standards that can occur. Your expectations for what is sensible lower.
