>Visit my folks for the weekend
>He and mom have like 24 chickens
I love chickens, I feel at peace when I'm surrounded by chickens
>The chicks escape the greenhouse
>Spend like 2 hours getting them back inside, see picrel

>Dog mauled one of the chickens last week
>Chicken is infected
>Rotting black-green skin, maggots everywhere

Dad tried bringing the chicken inside, cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol, and saving the chicken

>LostCause.jpg
>Takes chicken out back
>Shoots it with a 12 gauge to euthanize it
>It explodes
>He gives it a viking funeral pyre

This story ultimately adds up to nothing, I just am sad a chicken died
>>

>Shoots it with a 12 gauge to euthanize it
At least it died faster than its neurons could fire.
>>
>>4805967
Apparently it just exploded everywhere
I tried helping him clean the wound when it was still alive but it was too far gone

I feel awful for it

I know it's just a chicken and dad did the best he could but I don't like death

How many of those chickens do you get through a day OP?

Do you batter or just roast them?
>>
>>4805977
I'm just visiting for the weekend so I wouldn't know.

So far all they've done is collect eggs

One of the chicks might be a rooster and if that's the case then there'll probably be breeding in the near future

c. botulinum is a vile fucking organism anon, I'm sorry
>>
>>4805981
I read a bit on it today, apparently it can come from a number of things

moldy feed, wounds, etc

I thought it was just a thing people caught from bad dairy
>>
>>4805980
>w-we have prepared for your arrival my son
>WHERE IS MY TRIBUTE, FATHER
>he-here son, 20 chickens as per what you demanded
>THIS CHICKEN HAS BOTULISM, YOU TRY TO POISON ME MAN?
>nononononooo!!!
>*ahem* that was an honest mistake I swear. Pl-please spare your siblings...
>HMMMMM. I WILL GRANT YOU MERCY. BUT NEXT FAMILY GATHERING I SHALL DEMAND 30 CHICKENS AS RECOMPENSE...OR ESLE

>Be in pain for weeks

>Big ogre comes and picks you up, taking you inside
>He gives you a nice warm shower

The irony is that she's a fairly docile and friendly dog, no older than 2 or 3

She's supposed to be a therapy/emotional support dog

She sure wasn't being very supportive of those chickens, that's for sure

rip chicken
these things happen when raising pets or farm animals sadly
the responsible thing to do is ease their suffering you did well
one of my very old hens got her cloaca stuck a while ago it was looking really bad I had to put her down
im a eurofag so I had to go for the cleaver rather than the shotgun blast tho
it's always sad

Chickens evolved to be eaten. The correct thing would have been to take the chicken from the dog so it wouldnt learn to steal your food, kill it cleanly, prepare it, and then feed it to the dog. Leaving a half-killed chick alive is just retarded. They rot alive or just never become productive layers or fat meat hens.
>>
>>4806038
That dogs eat chickens? They are carnivores like us. If it is a chicken, a carnivore will eat it.

I used to work in a farm and visited those street markets that sell pets.

I can't imagine the immense a creature would feel with having 500+ maggots eating and shitting at its body.

>>4805965

>murder your friend for eating food
bro its a walking nugget
if i heard my neighbor did this he’d have his coop tragically catch fire. ive done it before with cutting abused dogs loose and rehoming them and my cat is someones former outdoor cat.
>trump flag flying neighbor uses a shock collar on his german shepherd for literally everything
>has no fence, just a tether
>dog out 24/7 never goes inside
>one pair of wire cutters and a steak later: i take the day off work to sell them to a karen in another county

Surprised it took this long for someone to say it. That's one less reason to get attached to chickens because EVERYTHING that is at least as large as them sees them as food or playthings.

I'm new at having backyard chickens and lost one recently to a raccoon attack. I've felt terrible about it for weeks. I know chickens are basically the most death-prone animal you can own because everything with teeth on this planet wants to eat them, so they WILL find a way, but it still feels bad. They're so defenseless every death is personally your fault.

It really sucks for newbies like me who look online for information and get a bunch of people saying, "Take it to a vet", so then I call up multiple vets and NONE of them deal with poultry. I ask them if they have any information on nearby poultry or farm vets, and they couldn't give me anything. The closest aviary specialist I could find was over an hour away. My poor hen is sitting in a laundry basket mortally wounded while I'm trying to find some sort of vet assistance and nobody could give me anything. She finally passed after thirty minutes of me trying to figure out ways to save her and I felt so helpless and dumb. It's not even like backyard chickens are uncommon in my area (Massachusetts), so it's extra nuts that poultry vets are such an untapped market around here.

Kill the raccoons at least. It’s the only way to avoid in the future barring moving your chickens somewhere more secure.
