There are only two genders, male and female. Trans people fall into one of the two depending on what you're transitioning into. Trans women are female. Trans men are male.

"gender" as you refer to it is a social construct and nothing more. A person's sex is determined from birth, mutants and birth defects notwithstanding. The old definition of gender was more cultural based as in gender roles like in hunter-gatherer societies. Never was it stated you could "change" your gender willy nilly, because gender and sex were still interchangeable.
