Newest pickup. Posted a few threads ago but no one cared.

It's a gold 10 Yen from the Meiji era. Essentially a Japanese version of a pre-33 Half Eagle.

Looked better than its grade so I nabbed it.

They’re about 90% and .24 gold weight like a half eagle. I really want some Japanese trade dollars and other silver but I’ve found they demand extreme premiums. You got a good online source? Just some local, or do you go to Japan? I kind of want to collect this stuff next to my “stack” of modern bullion because I’m a weeb and everyone else does LMU or pre-33 already. Plus lately I’ve figured that a little numismatic diversification is a good hedge against spot fluctuations. Used to be one of those “lol spot value is all that matters” but society isn’t going to collapse ever and past sales of gold numismatics retain a suuuuuuper stable premium that still has a hard bottom of spot. Anyway.
>>
From what I understand there are a lot of problems with PMs. Knowing what your are buying is real. If you use wire transfer or credit card/check there is an electronic record. In the US the IRS requires notification of sale/purchase over a certain amount and there are stiff federal taxes on PM capital gains, there could be state taxes also. If the price really increases who has the cash to buy it from you anyway. What if an interested party new or newer to PMs can't tell if what you got is real or not so they do not take it (buy or trade). The examples I have see from countries with hyper inflation they traded tiny amounts of gold or silver for food, one gold coin would be way too much and you risk getting ripped off or killed for it.

Silver is much easier for western banks to control because it's a much smaller market cap, and most of it is mined in the west, as opposed to gold which has a larger market cap and is mined in the east. The US Treasury told the public they would keep silver prices low in 1964 when they started debasing US coinage. No conspiracy about it, it's outright fact.

Put some into the sovereign coinage of your country(10-25%) assuming your country mints fine silver. Put the rest into the cheapest sovereign minted coinage you can find, or Sunshine Mint rounds with the special hologram anto-counterfeit tech. Can't go wrong with those. Avoid generic rounds, meme rounds, and 1oz bars.

>Which coins are the best?
For re-sale I'd say known coins/rounds like Britannias, maple leaves, krugerrands, american one dollar coins and buffalos.
If you have something a bit odd people might not trust the purity or weight.
However, personally, I think the best thing to buy is antique coins, because you will always be able to get spot value on them, plus the actual antique and numismatic value on top too. They are often not as pure as 999 fineness silver bullion rounds/coins however I see now reason why you couldn't buy them as well as or instead of other silver investments as long as you buy high purity ones. They are still good sellers, and from a preppers perspective: better because you can get them in many different sizes very easily, so should you want to divide up the value of your stack to buy things, it is easier. You will have to check what you are buying though, because their silver content varies; I only buy 900 fineness or above (that's 90% silver, sterling is 925, 92.5% silver)
pre-1920 British silver coinage is sterling silver and you can get them in everything from tiny threepence coins which are 1.4 grams, up to 1oz sterling crowns (28.34 grams, not troy oz).
>>59031525

There are sovereign 999 fine coins produced at the same price as generic rounds. Those are what I aim for to balance out semi-numi value, bullion value, and play on future desireability and recognizability.

When silver hits $276.49 per ounce, the value of a mercury dime will reach $20.00, the going rate for desperate women.

follow up question to this since im not America
The Gold price seems to be pretty fairly priced with 2600 $ since its only a half of its actuall worth but Silver by comparission is ridiculously cheap with 30 $ when it should be 20 x that much
If the US ever revaluates their Gold and Silver Value than Silver Stackers will be the clear winner since their stack just increased by 20 times in value while Gold stackers only increased by 2
Could this Silver boom spill over into other countrys like Germany or Russia?
I assume that with the US history of Bimetalism Silver would boom much more in the US and not so much in other states
Any thoughts on this?
My GSR is at 27 right now does it make sense to increase my Silver ratio if youre nor American?

How the clowns in the US government value their gold and silver reserves is nothing but a bookkeeping matter. It has little or no relevance to actual market price. Consider that it currently values gold at $42 an ounce. That number has no connection whatsoever to the real market value of gold.

This fren knows, this is the correct tactic. Plus buying bulk constitutional coinage comes with few advantages. You do not leave a paper trail (well, you do, but it's nowhere listed as a bullion purchase), you get better prices, undercut potential taxes (very nice if you live in the UK), and you sometimes have some rare dates/random valuable coins who haven't been checked yet in lots.
This is a nice way to stack for cheap and get your toe wet with numismatics.

Speaking of, i just won few auctions today. First is this greek Thyrreion's silver stater (8.21g) from -330 BC. A bit diamond in the rough looking, but we can see nice details below, with a bit of restauration i'm sure it will look great. Got it for a hundo bux.

From the same seller (who auctionned his freshly-buried gramps' collection within few days), an Antiochos IX drachm from -110 BC, which are very rare (funnily enough, there are plenty tetradrachms from the same era with the same design, but very few drachms). Got it for 44€, which is i believe a very nice price.

There is also this silver grosso from Venice, 1268, featuring the doge Lorenzo Tiepolo. The seller's pics aren't great, but you can guess the condition is pretty nice on this coin. Won it for 45€, which will be an easy x2 with HQ pics.

I'll need to figure out a way to remove this crap (maybe chemically if the soldering alloy isn't in silver?), and if i manage to do so it will be a great deal, those ancient rubles are very sought after. Paid 38 bux shipped for it.

i've been sad to witness it withered into oblivion. I've been out wandering in the sahara for a month (thx dad for the familial holidays) and when i came back it was already gone. So now i'm back here.
Do you know if scrapfren still is around here? That'd be a big loss for /pmg/ if he doesn't migrate back.

why is that? You are planning on becoming very poor?
>>
>>59033934
That's not a bad place to be stack wise. If you're where you have to worry about cash, I'd hang on at least a few months worth so you burn through that instead of having to touch any of the stack to sell. Also focus on paying off any credit debts first. Once you build up a decent enough reserve, go back to adding to stack.
>>
If things absolutely get out of hand and silver and gold skyrocket what do you think is the minimum to be WAGMi status?
>>
>>59033967
No one can really say because even during Weimar hyperinflation, gold prices were all over the damn place. People's compasses were spinning all over the place about what the value of things were. I think in a situation like that, you'd want negotiation skills on top of the stack because you're basically in a position to set your own price.

Personally i'd consider an ability to keep the same purchasing power as of today already a good outcome, while everything else completely shit the bed. In a way you live like a king if you can afford a brand new toaster for one silver coin while all your neighbors have to save for a year+ to do so, Venezuela style.

if it is lead or tin solder you can get something called soldering wick or copper braid used for removing solder, usually comes in a little spool, use some flux with it for best results. and you will need a hefty iron to heat up a coin enough.

depends on what you class as skyrocket. 10x? 100x? and depends on what you class as "making it". personally if I could make 60k I'd call that making it, because then i could afford most things i want in life, so if it's going to 10x i'd need 6k. I do not have 6k in precious metals, yet.
>>59033977
hey if you're doing ok now, I'd say putting aside a little stash of silver would give you tremendous peace of mind, because then you've always got that valuable thing. If you want another solid physical investment: tools, especially consumables like drill bits, screw driver tips and nuts and bolts. but I do say that coming from an engineering background, however people will need engineering more than ever if something were to happen that really affects your finances and those things are always re-sellable as long as you don't let them rust.

Alright then, i believe for most anons the initial shitcoin mentality of ultra-pump (of which i was 100% in) passed away, for more reasonable expectations.
I think for a lot of us, we had to rewire our brain to fit reality, which isn't easy when you are surrounded by utterly fake bullshit and ballooned numbers on screens who make no sense, where everybody chase the next x100.
"Metallic slowness" helped me a lot to come back to reality, which is funny considering PMs poorfolios most likely outperformed most of the cryptobros and stockbros in the past few years.

In the short term (meaning before the mountains of various derivatives & "financial assets" nothingness implode), G&S will continue to slowly but comfily creep up. It really feels good to own the only real, valuable asset around the block.

Here's a thing; I see people fudding pm's all the time:
I have made about +10% on spot value alone since I started investing in silver about 6 months ago. about 1% of that is because I have bought a load near or under spot. That's like being able to buy crypto or stocks below the current price of the crypto or stock in question. My first serious buy had me making money right away, but I've never found such a good deal since; I got about 20oz of 999 coins 2% below spot. I've been able to get a fair few old coins very near or below spot as well.
The "masters of the universe" are told what their buy and sell price is. I could sell right now and make back an additional +30% of my investment on top of that initial spot increase. I can barter and buy pm's at (almost) whatever price I want.
By anyone's measure this has been a good investment.

in the UK, very illegal without permission from the land owner, you'd have to be an actual pirate. it's actually worthwhile to recover gold from old electronics now. I only have a vague understanding of the process, dissolve metal in acid ???? PROFIT!

>cash, I'd hang on at least a few months worth so you burn through that instead of having to touch any of the stack to sell
It's irrational to not buy just because you hate selling so much. If the goal is to maximize weight this seems like a losing strategy. Both gold and silver went up 40% over the past 12 months with no end in sight. It's almost certainly better to buy now even if you have to sell some later for expenses. You still end up with a bigger stack than if you held fiat throughout (plus you get more of it if you actually need to sell). For someone with nothing or little it's not worth it not to buy except maybe when waiting for a dip.

Woohoo Frogbro is back! I was wondering where you went but hoped it had something to do with your early inheritance instead of back problems, did you acquire anything interesting during your trip to the Sahara? I hadn't posted in a while until this past Saturday when I slurped these $350 worth of silver and gold for $7.42 at an estate sale, the creamer is a well made coin silver piece from a smith active between 1793-1824, very old for American stuff. I've been busy working for the coin shop learning the ropes and it has been going great, they appreciate the experience and expertise I bring to the table and treat me very well, it feels good to work with such excellent people.

>Thyrreion's silver stater (8.21g) from -330 BC. A bit diamond in the rough looking, but we can see nice details below, with a bit of restauration i'm sure it will look great. Got it for a hundo bux.

That kind of coin is *exactly* what I look for when hunting for cheap hidden gems, you selected an extraordinary candidate for restoration that you can probably transform into a $300-400 prize with a few hours of aluminum/baking soda cooking and cleaning under magnification with a sharp bamboo skewer or the like. It's very reminiscent of the crusty Corinthian Pegasus stater I got for $110 from a French seller and restored into a lovely specimen, definitely keep looking for coins like that that one.

Na (((they))) just want to ethnically cleanse the middle east. Using american tax dollars and militar. Remember Netanyahoo gave a speech in USA congress and told members that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. He lied and we went to war and killed 1 million Persians paid for by US tax payers. Not to mention the thousands of US military that were killed. We are cattle to them. And we are fed lies to get us to commit war crimes on the behalf of israel

I have seen some of the Costco bars and they look suspiciosly thick for simple 1 ounce bars
Plus PAMP bars are already pretty popular to fake
Im happy that Normies are finally waking up and investing in precious Metals i just hink they are getting scammed from costco for not knowing any better
>>

im sure they get sigma tested. Any stacker that is paying 2,600 an ounce will get it tested for purity at some point. Costco wouldn't risk fakes, it would kill their business. Normies can go down to their LCS and run a sigma on it, im sure many have

>did you acquire anything interesting during your trip to the Sahara?
Nothing but a bit of sand in my shoes, it was a pretty normie-friendly trip, we didn't go out of the well-trodden paths, so anything presented before you is tourist crap. But it was nice to enjoy a bit of sun while it's been raining non stop for a year in France.

> I hadn't posted in a while until this past Saturday when I slurped these $350 worth of silver and gold for $7.42 at an estate sale
Jesus Christ, those numbers just make no fucking sense, you really are at an another level.

>smith active between 1793-1824, very old for American stuff
Very nice looking with beautiful engravings, i bet it's worth a small fortune. What do you plan to do with it? I've never seen silverware this old in the US, did you have some kind of hallmarks back then beside the silversmith's one?

>It's very reminiscent of the crusty Corinthian Pegasus stater I got for $110 from a French seller and restored into a lovely specimen, definitely keep looking for coins like that that one.
Indeed this must feel like a deja-vu for you. I'll post more pics once it shows up in the mailbox.
About deja-vu, look at what i scored earlier last month : a 2nd bracelet made out of guatemalan's 1/4 silver reales!
This one is much tinier and way less impressive (and less goldy) than the previous score, but there are some pretty rare years like 1880/1881. I had to slurp it when i saw the auction. Got it for 25 bux, so a bux for each 1/4 real.

Hey scrappers, once you've acquired your under-spot scrap, do you keep it in it's current form? Or have it refined into bullion? I've built a small collection over the course of the last year doing estate sales. I'm torn between keeping the original art pieces intact, and also having the knowledge that no one wants an 80-year old id bracelet for anything other than melt value. There's some things (coffee/tea service, monogrammed silverware sets) that kind of ride the line of maybe being worth more than the metal they're made of.

I also don't want to get screwed too aggressively by refining fees. Any thoughts, gentlemen?

Hey fren. Pretty simple really : you keep the nice & ancient pieces intact, and you melt down everything else.
If you have a doubt about if something is worth keeping or not, you simply post few pics here and we will help you figure out if the value of the item is worth more than it's PM content.

About the refining i'll let scrapfren answer this part, since it's illegal here in France if you are a private entity (refiners only are allowed to melt for companies/professionals, like jewelers..), which is a pain in the ass since i collected about 15kg worth of .999 to melt which i can't melt, unless i do it on my own, but then i wont have any authenticity marks/papers... A jeweler fren of mine proposed me to visit a visajeet smelter on the black market in Paris but i noped away when i arrived in the poosmelter "store". No way i trust & give away 15kg of the good stuff to a brown dude missing half his teeth, reeking of curry and not talking a word of french.

From memory scrapfren's refiner charge him 15% worth of the silver he brings in, which is nice since you don't have to pocket out a penny. But you can also decide to get back 100% of the silver and pay an equivalent fee in cash. The % might vary a little bit depending on the size of the bars you ask for, which range from 5oz to 100oz i guess.

>There's some things (coffee/tea service, monogrammed silverware sets) that kind of ride the line of maybe being worth more than the metal they're made of.
Only one way to figure this out : post some pics bro! Don't forget to zoom in on any silversmith's hallmark you might see, it's often reknowned craftmen who makes the value of an item.

Maybe an whole one ounce Gold coin is to much for most day to day transaction but fractional Gold is becoming more and more popular with the people since most of them can't afford a whole ounce anymore
And if that's not enough theres even smaller fractionals like the 100x1 Gramm bars that can be easily broken up into tinyer pieces

so that's about 75,000 ozt going off spot, so probably way less if they are paying premiums so lets say a generous 70,000 ozt sold per month. So if everyone bought 1oz that would be 70,000 people per month. I am also going to assume a lot of those people buy more than 1oz, if they all bought 2oz each that would only be 35,000 people, but lets say most buy 1oz and some even buy less than that, so we'll stick with 70,000 people BUT some of those are the same people stacking, so i think we can realistically reduce that number further, to 60,000 people per month buying gold across all of america. per year that's 720,000 new people stacking gold.
a quick google says that the population of america is 337,200,318.
correct me if i'm wrong but that's 0.21% of the population per year buying gold for the first time. I would actually estimate that it's half that, I feel like these are mostly already stackers.
TL;DR: The normies are not clocking on.
again, please do correct my numbers if I am wrong.

Quartz is about as common a constituent in the earth's crust as you can get. The notion that an industry as gigantic as silicon chips would be brought to a standstill for "a few years" is silly. In six months there would be quartz crucibles for sale at walmart. It reminds me of the peak oil people who were screeching twenty years ago about the end of the world when the oil would just supposedly run out one day. Markets are really MUCH better at resource management than most people know. You have to have a very narrow, government-enforced choke point - like a harbor - to get much traction from an embargo. And even then there will be a workaround in operation very quickly. Commerce is very powerful.

you can buy quartz crucibles on ebay for less than a tenner, but i am under the impression that these specific mines are the ONLY ones producing quartz pure enough for silicon wafer manufacture, which is very possible, in the same way that taiwan has some of the best ultra clean rooms and manufacturing facilities for IC's (integrated circuits, chips, to the layman) and nowhere else can really do as well as they do in that regard now. American military weaponry IC's are manufactured there.
