Unironically, you beat the S&P by first stacking an S&P500 ETF to build a solid base that will see you through thick and thin. Having that base means you can use margin without fear, take on riskier bets, and have the freedom to make big purchases of solid companies during obvious macro dips.
Remember, you are not seeking to beat the S&P by a huge margin. You want to beat it by a small margin, but consistently and over a long period. Let time turn that into big outperformance.
