I have a question. If one we're to cosplay a character with a revolver, would they be given a pass if they brought an actual revolver but the trigger and hammer were removed along with the ammo or empty shells?
>>
>>9560409

No. It needs to be faker than that. I think some metal ones might be allowed at some cons but it's going to be theatrical ones where the barrel is solid all the way through.

Even airsoft needs to be caulked all the way through. You're not going to get by just taking a couple parts off. Have you even started to look at any weapons policies at any of the places you'd be bringing this shit?
>>
>>9560416
I don't plan on going anywhere. I was reading vento aureo and was curious on how far I could go without having to start from scratch with some pvc pipe
>>
>>9560428
some cons are pretty stingy with having metal on weapon props.
hell, even at AX, some people had their props denied because the handle of their prop was made out of metal.

if you really want to use that revolver, just make a resin cast of it.

Is it okay to roll a dress and put it in an envelope for shipping? Also, whats the best way to package big bows?
>>
>>9560594
Hopefully you mean fold and put into a padded envelope. If you're unsure about how your buyer is going to take it, ask them. "Hey, I can probably fit this dress in an envelope, but it'll be a little tight and it might get wrinkled in transit. If you'd like, I can get a box or bigger envelope, but shipping will cost a little more."

I've meet my bf 2 years ago while he was in his Professor Layton cosplay. I've been dreaming for months rn about doing a cosplay duo with him. problems is, he's kinda bara more fat than muscle and super shy about it.
Right now I'm working on my Mordred cosplay and I wanted to make him a Kairi cosplay from fate apocrypha. Thing is, How do you make a costume for someone else? I'm used to work with small patterns and Xsmall stuff. I'm perfectionist and it makes me really nervous to get my work judged by someone else.
>>
>>9561322
measure a lot, make mockups and try them on him if sewing, if armouring I'd also recommend mockups of some sort if at all possible (but very careful measuring and testing might work as well)

is it all possible to create a buzz cut wig? I want to cosplay Gakuto from Prison School but I've no idea how I'd do it short of shaving my own hair, which I really don't want to do
>>
>>9561512
Its one of the few times that using your own hair is better. You could do stuff with a bald cap, but buzz cuts are very hard to replicate on a wig.

I'm trying to make a blade with glowing writing on it and I'm not sure how to implement it.
My first thought was to use transparent plastic as the base and have a light in the handle, but how would I cover up the sections that aren't supposed to be lit?
Would I raise the lit sections and add either filler or worbla around them, or should I just paint everything but the sections I want exposed and lit?
>>
>>9561653
You could:
>make the whole sword transparent and hollow, then paint all but the words , the add a strip of LED tape inside the sword
>make the whole sword solid colored and hollow, then cut out the letters and add a strip of LED tape inside
Kind of depends on whether you trust your cutting or painting skills more.

Took me some time to rebuild the visor.

Fml, the helmet got worse. Any ideas on how to glue the visor to he helmet?

Also, any way to remove the ink/dye that somehow got stuck to the outside? I don't know how, but the dye that was dry on my hand somehow applied itself to the helm. I tried removing the dye from my hand beforehand and it didn't come off, so fuck me I guess.
>>
>>9561670

The tape is there as a placeholder so I can see where I want to install the visor.
>>
>>9561664
You wanna mess around with servos and electronics or do an easy solution?
Basic solution would be like a nail clipper, basically a spring and two bars with a hinge on each side and put the spring in the mouth of the hinge. Wouldn't be really automatic but you can control it with your hand and it would open mouth again automatically.

>>9561653
>>9561657
I recommend the second one, is less expensive, generally neater and more common to do. I usually have a core from foam, cardboard or styrofoam, cut out the inside (doesn't necessarily be accurate), put transparent plastic over the shapes and leds inside, then cover it with thin foam or worbla layer, ofcourse with the runes cut out.
>>
>>9561664
you can maybe search up tutorials about how to make animatronic puppets or maybe just how to use servo motors in puppetry.
>>
>>9561679
I was suggested using a windscreen motor but they turn in 360 circle I want a motor that spins in a 180. Any suggestions?
>>
>>9560416
Try "blue guns" there might be a revolver model. I got mine (sigsaurer p226) from copsplus.com
Theyre just molds of the guns. No movable parts. You can paint them.
Also 99% of cops know what a blue gun is because theyre used in training, so if a cop asks about it, theyll usually understand
>>
>>9561072 recommended me to post here, and I'm looking for more advices.

Hello friends. Sorry for my upcoming english.

I'm about to do my first cosplay. An event is gonna take place here (Brazil) and I want to do Spiderman, my favorite hero. I think it's gonna be a good start for a cosplay.

I lurked on the interwebz and found two stores that makes the Spider Suits.

First is RPC Studio:

https://www.therpc.studio/index.php?route=product/category&path=59_64_92

Second is Zentai Zone:

http://www.zentaizone.com/

In RPC Studio, most suits are 270 USD. BUT with the aditional items (faceshell + lenses + zipers + symbol) it goes up to +400 USD.

in Zentai, most suits are 65 USD, but it has additionals. I did a little calculation, only making a budget, and in Zentai, a full costume is more or less the same thing. But I didn't enjoyed too much their products. It looks too much cloth-like, and the model is kinda.... fat.

In any case...

- Should I get RPC or Zentai? I want to spend a maximum of 500 USD.

- Magnetic lenses or not? Can someone explain the difference?

Thanks in advance!

Kek, sorry anon. I would try re-doing it with the knowledge you've learned, it'll definitely come out better. Also, use fewer layers of plasti-dip or whatever you primed it with, that'd probably help with the lumpiness.
>>
>>9561805
Don't be too hard on yourself, the only way to get better at these things is to do 'em, you couldn't have expected to make 0 mistakes, right? Live and learn
>>
>>9561812
I am not sure I understand. Cut the part of the helmet it's attached to and then reattach it to the inside?

>>9561816
That's gonna take some time. I'll build the rest of the suit first before I redo the helmet for sake of productivity and mental health.

>>9561818
It's not that, it's like everything gets worse and worse. No matter how much I try and fix or prepare it gets even more screwed up.

Not even kidding. Literally another ink spot has appeared on it within the last 20 seconds.
>>
>>9561831
>I am not sure I understand. Cut the part of the helmet it's attached to and then reattach it to the inside?

Start over with a new visor entirely. Cut the bat shape out of the helmet then put a new visor piece, one that is smooth and not shaped too much and attach it to the inside of the helmet.
>>
>>9561844
What will that do? I have no way to smoothly shape the plastic. Also with all of the directions it has to go it won't come out smooth with the heat gun. Unle as there's some other method out there?
>>
>>9561859
It won't look like an awkward piece of plastic glued on top of the helmet. it will look cleaner.
>>
>>9561867
Are you saying to make an indent or bevel the helmet to make the visor flush?

I'll definitely do that on the rebuild. This one is stuck with crazy glue so there is no way to remove it.
>>
>>9560969
Any help?
>>

if you need that exact pattern or you can try to trace out how you'd think the pattern would work from the image on several pieces of paper and modify/test a pattern that way with scrap fabric and go that route

I'm making a Calne Ca cosplay, I want to make her headphones light up like pic related, but I've never implemented lights in a cosplay before.
I'm probably going to put a bike light inside the structure somewhere that I can turn on and off from the outside, make most of the thing out of craft foam and use some kinda translucent blue material for the parts that light up, but I'm not sure if something like that exists that's also sturdy enough to not look like shit?

Or if anyone has a better option, please throw it at me.

>>
>>9560969

Oh god, my mom had this pattern when I was a kid, and I subsequently had a handful of these various hats made.

The best thing you can do is look at patterns for medieval costumes. McCall's has a whole jester costume, and while it sucks to buy it just for the hat, it may be easier than trying to hunt an old pattern off of ebay or the internet.

There's lots of online drafted patterns for this kind of hat if you just google 'jester hat pattern.'

I'm starting on an adult Toph cosplay, and I'm confused about the chest plate. I figured I'd make it in the same way as pleated armor, but I didn't know if that is excessive?

I have a marine quality heavy vinyl for the plate, and I could just heat mold it and sew/paint in the lines, but I figured that it would make it super hard to move in.

I'd try searching on Facebook. Inividualy try keywords like 'meet', the name of the series, the con's name, or location if this is outside of a con. why not just paint over it instead? seems like youve been taking a bunch of unnecessary steps with this helmet build

There was also some superglue residue. On top of the aforementioned layer of gloss. Repainting would have made things worse, believe me I was originally going to do that.

I'm going to be making the Kusuriuri from Mononoke, but I'm really conflicted on how to go about his kimono + obi. I'm not sure if I should use a cotton fabric or silk. Silk is pushing my budget, but it's more accurate to the time period. Cotton is in my budget and looks more like what he wears imo but isn't historically accurate.

Any advice or opinions is much appreciated!

Is it okay to cosplay fan art of licensed characters if you've tried contacting the artist and they never responded, or is that frowned upon?
>>
>>9566046
Fuck em, they own the artwork not the character. As long as you're not selling prints you shouldn't feel bad.
>>
>>9566007

I'd use a light rayon blend, something with a lot less form. Linen or a linen look alike would probably work really well for the top and pants. For the sash and cape you may want to go even lighter, and if you can find a non-shiny stretch knit, it'd probably do you wonders.

As far as the wings go-- how much time and experience do you have with prop-making? If you're confident, the movable ones will be cooler at a con. There's also a crowd to consider, so if you'd rather not deal with the potential of all your hard work being broken by some rambunctious congoers, you may want to stick with stationary.
>>
>>9565975

The rule with dying is it's always easier to go from light to dark.

Get a pair of light-wash bell-bottoms and dye them a light purple. Bleaching isn't a good option unless you're hoping to get unevenly spotted pants, such as the 'fatigued' look.

that might actually work well with that anons cosplay since that verison of shaundi is a drug addict so it would kind of make sense for her pants to look completely worn out.
though, it can still backfire and end up just looking messy rather than something that looks believably worn out.

Do I just sew it directly to the back or is there a way this thing comes out of the scalp? Any help appreciated.

Here to answer questions!

>>9566779
You could probably make a duct tape pattern pretty easiy, just remember to add ~1 inch of ease for breathing and .5 inches to all sides for seam allowance.
Otherwise, I think if you can find a high neck victorian shirt pattern they're pretty similar without all the bells and whistles (male patterns might be closer).

>>9561322
If he's willing and not always readily accessible for fittings, it might be helpful to make a duct tape dressform out of him so that you have a good draping base. Otherwise, just take lots of measurements, make a muslin beforehand and adjust the muslin as needed. I made a costume for my mom and people that aren't into cosplay honestly always have a "good enough" attitude about costumes, so don't worry about perfection, just wearability.

>>9562964
110 is plenty, Arda is probably your best bet for base wigs though you'll have to do some trimming. Trimming wigs is a lot different and less forgiving than hair, so definitely look up some tutorials beforehand. Get yourself a razor comb, some nice haircutting scissors, and got2b hairspray. With that amount of money, though, you can just commission one if you don't want to cut it yourself.

>>9563211
Looks like this would be better as styled and tufted long fake fur. http://www.fabricempire.com/ is a pretty good source for fur, and look at Seraph Cosplay's recent progress on wolf hanzo to see what the process looks like.

>>9563761
Spandex would look cleaner, but you could change up the material to be less spandexy with scuba knit or coated/ matte pleather spandex.

>>9568353
Dress looks better, and pants are hard to pattern as a first project. As for the bandaged look, you're going to have a much easier time if you just sew on strips flat on your dress pieces before you sew the dress together. They may not line up perfectly on each side, but it's the easiest route for a first cosplay. I'd put black shoe polish between and under the strips for dimension.
>>
I'm trying to do Ebola-chan (I know it's a dead meme) and I was wondering what would be the best way to do the "Shepherds Crook" at the ends of her twin-tails.

There's no good way to alter without sewing for something that's supposed to look clean and tailored.

Protein for modifying clothes from one brother to another. Men's suits don't really fit all tight like this. I've had better luck finding stuff in the women's section at thrift stores because they're built for fithing curves. Look for a women's black trenchcoat, maybe with some stretch and learn how to alter the back into coattails. Do practice sewing on something else first before the real deal. Look up youtube vids on how to make something like boxers, pj pants or tote bags. Easy projects that don't use a lot of fabric but will give you a better feel for sewing and how to alter other things.
>>
How do I pull off her flared sleeves shirt? I can't make it from scratch because no sewing machine.
>>
>>9569037
Then you might as well give up. Get a sewing machine, and if you want to do flares like that you need an iron too. Look up plated skirt tutorials for ideas.

>>9568644
I could probably get rid of the red lines for you by altering the model, but that means it needs to be unfolded again which I am absolutely not in the mood for lol.
>>
>>9568357
using that rope? not as a backpack, unless you want to amputate your arms from the shoulders

you could just use the rope to pull the mouth of the bag shut, then hold on to that for a handbag-like situation, but again - you will not want to carry it in your bare hands once it has anything inside it

>>9568172
yes, but they're considered kinda sweet-leaning so I would check if they fit with the general mood of the coord

>>9567542
if you don't care what you look like you can hot glue it, but you will probably be posted in the bad cosplay thead and heavily shamed

>>9567509
uhh, look into mori kei? it's not super practical for hiking shit but the vibe might interest you
>>
>>9568357
You could wrap the rope around the mouth of the bag and tie it and if it fits slip it over your head and onto your shoulder so it will hang down at your waist on the opposite side.
I don't know if that would hurt when filled though, maybe >>9569097 has more insight
>>
>>9569100
it very likely will be uncomfortable but not quite as bad as the other two options

what I would personally recommend to >>9568357 would be to buy some wider ribbon, rope or a long strip of fabric, stitch both ends down to the bottom of the sack (it's only two small rows of stitching, a beginner could whack it out in 2 hours max), then use the top part to tie the mouth of the sack. this creates some relatively comfortable backpack straps while also closing up the bag

Is Shampoo's hair blue or purple?? I'm trying to find a wig on arda wigs to get but I can't figure out which color is best. I've seen cosplays with blue and purple wigs, I'd like a mix of both colors.

Also, is it possible to style those side buns without buying a separate wig piece?
>>
>>9569117
looks slightly purplish to me, but heck if I know. electric/neon purple maybe? or grape/violet, I'd compare their customer pics
on the buns, probably not - I would buy either additional short clips for both the buns and the weird front bits, or add wefts (which takes time and effort)
>>
>>9569117
You could try taking out wefts and glueing them around a styrofoam ball (paint it first). But i would not recommend styling them into the wig itself.

What would be the best way to achieve the sheer part over the skirt on pic related? What kind of shape should I cut to create the full pleated shape?
>>

Sheer fabric, put something in the hem to stiffen it like a horsehair braid. Could also use wired gold ribbon for the trim. You're probably gonna want to cut out half-circles or half-ovals.

me again with another question: I'm going to be making the hat, but I can't pick the fabric out. I was originally thinking it's felt/wool, but in the anime it's not perfectly pointed and very obviously shifts in shape a little whenever the character moves. I'm now guessing some sort of heavier fabric, almost like a coat/sail material? I am having trouble with also understanding how I should make it stand upright, if it's that - just do a really heavy, wide seam and hope its weight keeps it relatively correctly shaped? I'd rather not wire it, that would probably look pretty unnatural and also make it very hard to transport.

tldr/questions:
>what does pic related hat look like it's made of?
>if a thinner type of fabric, how would you make it stand upright?
>>
>>9570563
Look into how real felted wool hats are made. Texture is very important in costumes and a felted hat would make the most sense for Snufkin's aesthetic
>>
>>9570623
I agree that aesthetically, felt makes sense, and it's what I thought myself before watching a few episodes, but.. does felt really move/flop around that much? and the edge of the hat looks really ragged, like torn fabric, can felt really look like that? that's part of why I'm really confused.
>>
>>9570563
Felting is gonna be a whole new set of supplies, so if you're not in the place to spend that money, look for a nappy wool suiting in that color or a nicer felt. a layer of buckram around the edge of the brim can help keep its shape somewhat and will be a little flimsier than wire. Extend the buckram for more sturdiness. As for the uprightness, if you just stuff some polyfill between the lining and the shell of the hat you'll get that shape without much trouble. If you're making it a lot taller than that, put a thin wire in the hem.
>>
>>9570656
Yep. It's all about how it's made. If it's really thick felt that's been tightened with hot water it's stiff but thin stuff stays floppy. If it's wool felt and not craft felt you can go in and "distress" the edges by pulling the fibers apart with a wire brush pretty easily.

I really appreciate the advice, thank you anon! I'll look around for some probably. thanks for the lining tip as well, I didn't really think about.. well, stuffing it, in a way.

>>9570678
ah, thank you! I might miss out on the felting option this time because I don't have the supplies easily available to me, but I'll definitely remember the distressing tip.

>>9570684
*certain* characters, yes - you won't be easily able to make shit like sidecut wigs or things with braids, spikes etc out of random wigs (as there's a pretty significant chance of the cap starting to show). generally the way around those is either character wigs, wefting and other advanced mods, or adding clip-in pieces.
the one you linked.. could probably be doable if you combine a long clip and a short wig (I don't know what the back looks like so not sure how well it would sit), but a character wig will be less fuss. be ready to possibly replace the ribbons though in case they look like shit
>>
>>9570693

Would it be possible to dye a polyester backpack with idye poly? Are there any concerns to this process I should be aware of? I want to go from white to light grey
>>
>>9570782
Entirely depends on what it is. For something like a simple school uniform it would probably be more cost effective to just get it custom made to your measurements on Taobao, I've done it before and it looked entirely fine. Anything more complicated than that would be a bit of a gamble, but if you have some sewing skills but not enough to make a costume from scratch then getting something off Taobao and altering the parts that aren't quite right might be a good plan.
>>
>>9570563
It reminds me a bit of megumin's hat that I made. I sort of cheated by buying a small summer hat, and using a cheap pillow's stuffing (not sure what its called) on top of that. That way it will stand up straight while using soft fabric to cover the summer hat and stuffing, allowing it to shift in shape too.
>>
>>9570832
I personally stay away from poly dyeing at all costs just because it makes an unholy mess each time. If you go through with it, make sure you have a large enough pot (can't be used for eating after bc the dye particles are stubborn and toxic) to comfortably fit the bag, cover all surfaces in your kitchen (especially if you have anything laminate or plastic, it will get dyed) have the vent on (it'll get dyed too but it's easier to clean than the ceiling) and the backpack must be wet before going in the pot to dye evenly. Do as many test strips as needed beforehand. If it doesn't fit in a pot, alternatively you could use a large bin and pour a bunch of near-boiling water in it, but the dye won't set as effectively due to lower heat (not a huge problem since it's a light color).

>>
>>9571012
well you pretty much have nothing that you would really need to do except for cutting a small portion for the bangs in the middle, the rest is already properly in style.
>>
>>9571012
If you're really worried get a cheap party city wig to practice on. Also style on yourself and not a foam head because those are smaller than most people's heads
>>

>>
>>9571012
>>9571030
Don't style on your own head, that ups the difficulty level to cutting your own hair vs. someone else's head and is generally a bad time. Get a foam head (the male ones are closer to real head measurements) measure your own head, and add packing tape to the head form until it matches your head measurements. Even then, since it's such a simple style it doesn't really matter if the foam head is a little too small. While you're at it, get a razor comb, it makes trimming wigs nicely a lot easier.

Are there any events for cosplay other than cons?
Is there anything i should watch out for or know in advance?
>>
>>9571618
Of course its "worth doing" if its your first time! How else would anyone have possibly started?
Dunno about no metal being anything but a good rule though, there are definitely a lot of irresponsble people at cons

Thanks for the reply!
Its just a pet peeve of mine when costumes are done with materials that make them look like a costume, not clothes the character would actually wear so if i cant have metal props i will lose a lot of motivation. I think ill stay on the fence untill i dont have an excuse not to cosplay for now

You've probably been looking at some unskilled foam workers. They often use foam armor in movies, even, because it's a lot more practical and light than metal. It really depends on how the piece is finished. Resin and other materials are also used pretty often for props, ex. Volpin Props (pictured).
>>
>>9571618
>>9571656
at my local events there is someone who keeps showing up in a shoulder plate made out of sheet metal and a massive sword made out of a slab of veneer. everyone secretly hates that person because he's a walking fucking safety hazard (especially considering there are usually quite a lot of children and young teens at the events who don't have a great sense of their surroundings). please don't be that guy.
>>
>>9571656
> so if i cant have metal props i will lose a lot of motivation

theres a reason why people dont use metal props.
its not because of security reasons but because its heavy.
youre forgetting that cosplayers wear their stuff all day. imagine wearing a metal suit all day. especially in the heat.

its possible to make other material look like metal. it really depends on how they paint/finish the piece.

I think youre just overthinking everything and being way to critical about it all. there is no way youre gonna have fun at a con with your current mentality.

how do people add rigidity to foam?
I've been using a layer of wood filler and mod podge so the filler doesn't crack, but even that seems to bend more than I'd like
>>
>>9572211
You have to give it an internal frame before you start stuff. Like for a sword it's best to start by sandwiching two piees of foam around a wood dowel or even a metal rod.
>>
>>9572211
foam is gonna want to bend no matter what and cause cracks when you layer something that drys hard.

pretty much the only sure way to remedy this is to wrap something like worbla around the foam.
you can maybe try fiberglass resin but youll probably need to build up a lot of layers so it wont bend.
>>
>>9572227
what I mean is I have a chestplate made of foam. I wore it to a con, but the neckguard started bending and broke the foam so I had to sand off the paint and primer and start from there
I'm trying to add rigidity to the neckguard and piece in general so it doesn't bend and break the paint
>>
>>9572230
so then I won't be able to do anything with this to keep it from breaking at this point? That's disappointing. I guess I can keep it in mind the next time I make something to not use only eva

>>
>>9572234
Alternatively, use flexible materials for filling, primining, and painting that won't crack. I can't think of flexible fillers off the top of my head (caulking? there's some other stuff too), but plastidip or balloon latex is your best bet for priming.

when doing a genderbent (male -> female) version of a character, is it better to stick with the no makeup makeup look, or can I get away with doing something flashier so long as it's appropriate for the character?
>>
This is vague as fuck so I don't expect people will know what the hell I am talking about but might as well try.

There's a Japanese artist that often used to get posted on here and people were interested in them for their extravagant clothing designs. There would be occasional threads for this artist and people would discuss how to recreate the designs in person. I can't remember their name or anything really that stood out about their art style, just that they were popular with extremely talented seamstresses because of how challenging the designs were.

If anyone knows who I'm talking about you are honestly a god because fuck this is vague.

Anons from non-English speaking countries: do you use English language tutorials for stuff? If so, how do you find out the name of the materials you'll need in your native language? Do you often find the stuff you need in your country, or not? And - If not, what do you use?
>>
>>9573091
Personally I would do something flashier that's appropriate to the character. Since you've already thrown accuracy out the window by doing a genderbend you might as well have fun doing it creatively.

I want to cosplay a very pale character and I know white makeup covering your entire face is awful, so my question is what should I do? If I go natural, what is the "best" way of getting pale? The con isn't for another 10 months so I have plenty of time.

Skin lighteners exist, but they can cause premature aging, which just isn't worth it for a cosplay.

Look up strobing contour and push heavy on the hilighter, and take time to practice your face a minimum of 10 times before the con. It's a skill that builds, don't just expect it to go well the day of.

I painted my gun gold, and I'm wondering if I should do anything to weather it.

I'd normally use acrylic wash or shoe polish, but it's supposed to be gold... Should I just leave it as is?
>>
>>9573256
my bewbs are sadly not actually that epic. it's more epic shortness that I'm going for here.

>>9573241
that's kinda what I was thinking myself; I'm already not going to be 100% accurate anyway, so I might as well do something cool with it instead of playing it totally safe.
>>
>>9573536
i guess it depends. is the gold super shiny and a bit reflective like james bonds golden gun?
if so, i think it will be fine without adding any weathering effects.

if its more of a matte finish, i think you should weather it a bit. personally i think matte/slightly shiny finished golden props just look too much like a toy. at least weathering it will kinda break that a bit.

you dont have to go overboard with it. maybe add some dark shades of ochre or even sienna to the mix just to make the gold color pop a bit.
>>
Any advice/pointers for painting EVA foam? Particularly sealing it and getting a smooth finish?
>>
>>9573671
heat seal it first, then get another sealant/primer over that like plastidip or mod podge
sand to a smooth finish with fine grit sandpaper and paint

just don't get too close when you paint or put on too many layers, or you'll end up with a really messy or thick looking final coat
>>
>>9573254

Obsessive sunscreen can help
>>
>>9573254
Sunscreen, big hats, not going outdoors.

Also, I can't tell if you're talking about a regular pale like Elsa or super white like albino. You can paint your face white but pure clown white isn't what you should go for. You have to take it a few tones up and do contouring so you aren't flat. Otherwise you can you a foundation that's light for you but you still need to contour.
>>
>>9573671
>>9573681
Like this one said, but i'll write my own steps more specifically on what i use. Foam doesn't melt, so you can heat seal it really up close with a really hot air gun (mine is like 700c). Then I paint it with a mix of gesso and latex, which keeps it flexible but not so sticky as pure liquid latex, and it's quite inexpensive. You can also use PVA glue (more commonly known as woodglue) but this dries a little more rigid and will wrinkle if your foam piece bends a lot.
Paint/prime it in thin layers if you want a nice smooth finish and let it dry properly inbetween

Hi I really need your help. My cons coming up soon and I still haven't made the main part of my display. Make a duct tape body double. Cover that in masking tape. Draw the design onto that with a marker. Cut out the the masking tape design. Lay all the pieces flat onto packing paper. If the pieces don't lay perfectly flat, cut darts into them. Add seam allowance.
There's your pattern.
>>
>>9574600
Thank you senpai. This sounds like it'll be painful, should I cover my body with oil or something so it doesnt RIP my nipples?
>>
>>9574654
Oh god no.
No, no, no. Look up how to make a duct tape body double. There are lots of guides on the process. The basic idea though is you wear normal undergarments that you don't mind having be possibly cut up (undershirt/tank top, underwear), then a layer or two of saran wrap. Do not do this too tightly. you still need to breathe. Then wrap yourself in duct tape over the saran wrap. Again, not so tight you can't breathe. Do 2-3 layers of this, then cut it off of yourself. This will require a second pair of hands.

Once you're free of it, tape it up again, stuff it, more tape, and you've got a body double.
>>
>>9574406
if your con is coming up soon and you still dont even know how to make your main cosplay pieces, maybe you shouldnt bother cosplaying for that con.
youre just gonna end up rushing everything and its gonna look like crap so its sounds like its not even worth it.

maybe do the cosplay for a different con? that way you have more time to properly plan out your cosplay and do more research.

>>
Is it rude to go to meets at a con to snap pics with some characters you like?
>>
>>9574907
building your first cosplay from scratch with no pattern or prior experience in whatever kind of field will end up as a disappointment either way, harsh truth.
Take a jacket you like, see how it's built up, wrap it in saran wrap and tape it over with masking tape like the other said, then draw pattern and cut seams like the design you want. Leave seams in generic areas such as the vertical seam down the sides of your body etc.

>>9574935
Why would it be? Cosplayers love to get pictures taken. Unless the meet is in a private area I'm sure they would not be bothered when you're just as much a fan of the series as they are. Just don't get in the group pictures when they want a group picture of every cosplayer.
>>

yeah, actually it was. it was Ryu from breath of fire 2. hes an obscure character so there were practically no patterns whatsoever so i was in the same boat as you. I had to learn how to sew, do foam fabrications and even learn how to style a wig.

dont get so butt hurt just because i told you that you gotta put some effort yourself and think for yourself. instead of just asking "how do i make patterns" have you tried just searching that up on youtube?
i get it, its your first cosplay and you need help but do you seriously need your hand held that tightly?

Cosplayers use patterns all the time. Take some time flipping through a book, and consider seam placement and overall shape. Most patterns will take a level of modifying.

Armorcrafting newfag here. I've been working on this guy for about a month, and I've realized that committing to a full-body armor cosplay when my prior experience consists of three EVA hand props was poorly thought-out. Still, I've been learning a lot about the preparations needed for a major project so it won't be a total wash if I'm not done in time for the nearest convention in October.

I just finished making a duct tape cast of my head for the helmet and plan to move on to the rest of the armor later this week. However, all those belts running between the plates are giving me pause. fasteners also work well, make sure to use washers to prevent the foam from tearing. Contact cement works too, same as just good old hot glue, tear some scratches into the spot you want to glue with a box knife to make the hot glue adhere better.

More references but NSFW. The seams look like individual pattern pieces which isn't impossible, just rather complicated. Same for the jacket. A friend of mine knows crafts so her armor isn't that big of a deal, but the jacket and shorts are tripping me up hard. The hentai itself isn't as detailed so there's that too. I have a pair of shorts that fit this way already that I can dye, but that still just leaves the jacket. Anyone know where I could buy something like it? Or what kind of jacket to search for?

I'd like to have the VN version but my brain shuts down when trying to figure out how to make the heart shape with a seam on the pattern itself.

There's unfortunately not many shots of her from behind. With the jacket on.
