Howloween edition
Post fursuit/mascot pics, questions, stories and anything else fursuit related.

Frequently asked questions:
>How much is a new suit
Expect to pay at least 2k for a fullsuit commission, 3k+ for something padded, and higher if a realistic suit. Heads typically go for 400-1k, partials 900-1.5k.
>Where to buy second hand?
https://www.furbuy.com/

>What about Japanese suits?

https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/6993893/
>fur supplies?
Fabric.com and fursuitingsupplies.com, Mendels if you want higher-quality stuff. Also try "I'm Stuffed Fur" and "CR Crafts"
>Foam?
I usually buy mine in bulk off Amazon.
High density for heads, med/low for body/padding.
You can get decent discounts from jo-anns as well.
>How to clean?
I prefer handwashing with woolite. Don't use a dryer unless it has a cool setting, you'll melt the fur.

I noticed the same problem with my lucario (it was a bit better than yours). I opened the mouth up and also opened up the ears, since they're more 3d -ish they kinda act like those vents in car garages. There's an usb fan in the nozzle, powered by a powerbank.
I've also seen heads with extra holes in the foam/base to allow more breathing through the fur fabric in cases of bad ventilation (kemono heads for example tend to have small nozzles, no room for a fan and also non-breathable eyes and mouth).
>>
Do heads with powered fans make noise?
>>
>>9674081
Depends on what fan you choose. Mine is quite silent, I don't notice it. But I do recommend choosing a silent fan, since you will hear it for sure since it's inside your mask.

People tend to spend a lot of money on their hobbies, regardless of what it is. People on /cgl/ also spend a lot of money commissioning non-furry cosplays and trying to get their dream lolita/jfash wardrobes

t b h, it's really not all that bad.
USUALLY it's one time deal with suits. there are the people who do commission multiple suits, but that's really not as common.
compare that to people into jfash with large wardrobes. there's a ton of people who buy exclusively brand on here, and that can be a minimum of 400/set even. when there's so many people picking up multiple dresses a year- it adds up preeeetty fast!

Looks to be just a shaving problem. Shave down the dark blue areas that're supposed to be the same length as the light blue and whiter areas (the upper 5/6ths or so of the arms, all of the bits on the legs) and It'd be fine. They already did that with the face, I wonder why they didn't finish?

hi guys i know this isnt exactly fursuit, but im looking for a good seller of high quality ears thats not Kittens Play Pen. I'm struggling to find another seller that doesnt look like garbage.

thanks!!

>>9676105
Have you tried Etsy?
>>
>>9676124
i have been looking around on etsy but most of the shops ive found aren't that great. still looking through them now tho! hopefully ill find a gem
>>
>>9676105
Hoshiikins makes some good ears, and the kitten collection on etsy makes some good ones too! both are much better, and look much more realistic than KPP also. And none of their shitty customer service.
>>
>>9676130

oh thank you so much ill have a look right now!

yeah i really like KPP stuff but the customer service was real shitty last time. makes me sad bc ive been following her on tumblr since befoer she even opened the shop so i wanted to support her :(
>>
>>9676105
I don't know what kind of ears you're looking for, but Clockwork Creature do really good realistic ones. They'll custom paint these ones as well. (To what extent I have no idea)
>>
>>9676132
I liked KPP stuff as well. I ended up placing an order for their stuff finally back in 2015. Finally got my order nearly a year later... While I do like my set, It wasn't at all worth the wait, and the ears don't really even look that great on my head... and they look different than the pictures they had up at the time I purchased. Not as goo of quality. Plus, the collar was fraying when I got it, and the kitten collection has way better and cheaper collars too. :(
>>
>>9676138
yeah i recently got my collar after 6month wait and was highly disappointed, looked very different than the image. just checked out Hoshiikins and they're gorgeous! gotta read more into her order form, but do you know what her typical wait time is?

also loving the collars on TheKittenCollection but not seeing any ears for sale the moment, but checking her recent reviews they looks super nice :)

>>9676137
ooo ive always adored their suits, i didnt know they just did pieces. having a look now!
>>
>>9676143
I purchased all my hoshiikins ears when she still had an etsy, so I'm honestly not sure. she started getting really popular when I placed my last order, and I think it was around.. 2-3 months maybe? but it was well worth the wait I think. They are still my favorite ears, and I wear them all the time.

Glad I could help ^~^

I know how hard it can be to find cute ears, so I like helping out whenever I can.

I get so many compliments on my ears from her, and I really do wear them almost every day
>>
On the subject of ears can I ask a really stupid question? I've never seen a really good pair of ears in person and up close like these >>9676137

How do the edges come together so cleanly? Is there no fur there and just the edges of the foam or plastic inserts showing or how are they actually made? I have cheaper toony ears that have the fur just folded over so I was curious how the hyper realistic ones are done.
>>
>>9676065
ugh so cute, we need more buns
>>
>>9676159
>and I really do wear them almost every day
Are you one of /those/ people in person? May or may not be negative depending on personality otherwise.
>>
>>9676160
On my hoshiikins ears, they edges are heat treated in some way to where the fur just looks like a seamless edge.

On ears I have made, and what it looks like in this picture, I sew them together and pick all of the trapped fur out of the seam, which basically will not show a seam much, or if at all.

>>9676163
I honestly just like wearing ears. It makes me feel cute. And while it may seem weeby, I am definitely not one of the types to run around and nya and act cringy. I guess take that how you will as to whether or not it's good or bad. I don't meow or act like I think I'm a cat, just like a normal person wearing cute ears.

Had a idea for a suit, but not sure if I'll ever actually do it, so hence the initial idea "sketch" being here.
Mostly because to this day I have never seen a good shark outfit (or even a decent shark that actually looks like a shark for that matter) for this I referenced actual sharks (Internet cookie if you can guess species) and tried to keep it as on reference as possible (less than realistic eyes aside). Intended to be made with a lycra skin and be form fitting on the front of the torso, hands(webbed)/arms and around the front of the legs.
Main reason I'm not sure if I'll do it, wanted to have the front fins of the shark be the legs of the wearer, but there's no real way to incorporate the feet into it without the fins either being wrong, or having the feet being basically vertical.
>>
>>9676172
really love this design, i like what you have for the feet. im not sure you could do it any other way without looking off
>>
>>9676170
>On my hoshiikins ears, they edges are heat treated in some way to where the fur just looks like a seamless edge.
Huh, that's really clever, I would have never thought of that. Thanks for your insight on this!
>>
>>9676172
A black tip or maybe nurse shark? Yeah aquatic 'fursuits' are hard to come by, hard to anthropomorphize too.
>>
>>9676172
money on tiger shark or sandtiger shark
>>
>>9676176
Thanks, so far it's up to either blob feet/straight black feet that you're supposed to ignore, but that just seems lazy, or clawed & webbed feet, which would look like someone stuck some feet on the end of the fins, ruining the smooth aesthetic.

>>9676192
>>9676195
For the black tip or tiger/sand tiger sharks, it looks like it'd be just a easy minor colour adjustment from what I'm thinking of, but not it.
>>
>>9676213
uh.... how many gill slits
>>
>>9676226
Five, and just realized I forgot to establish where they go in the concept image. Probably on the torso indents above the legs.
>>
>>9676229
uh... copper shark?

pretty hard without color lol
>>
>>9676231
Wow, never realized how much so certain species of shark look similar to each other without colour. It's silvery grey on top with a white bottom, and black highlights on all of its fins aside from the primary dorsal fin.
Should I just say it?
>>
>>9676242
uh...pigeye?

up till now i hadnt googled but i'm stuck.

it's hard because part of it is the lines of the body which are harder to see on a fursuit haha.
>>
>>9676258
Was shooting for caribbean reef shark, but again, it'd be as easy as a slight colour change to make it a bunch of other species. If it were to be made, it'd be interesting to have interchangeable outer skins for said different species, but that'd more than likely be way more of a hassle than it's worth.
>>
>>9676267
Eh, the nub on the tail is pretty distinct. Either way its cute!
>>
>>9676213
I think plain black or grey socks or ballet slippers would work best. They'd make the feet look as small and smooth as possible. Stuffed blob feet would look bizarre and draw too much attention, and anthropomorphizing the feet would look bad and fall into the same pitfalls most anthro aquatics fall into. There's no reason for a fish to have claws. You can't not have feet, but a small and discreet footwear at least isn't shoehorning your feet into the design in a way that compromises the design.
>>
>>9676285
i agree this would be the best !
>>
>>9676285
By blob feet I meant indistinct and without defined detail, as opposed to having the toes being separate, detailed and a part of the costume. So effectively more or less what you suggested.
Not that I probably would in the end, but if it were to go on the anthropomorphize the feet route, not having it clawed would be inconsistent with the hands, which would be. Webbed hands without claws doesn't look right, unless it's supposed to be integrated into a full arm fin in such a way that the hand's supposed to be lost into the fin, which usually looks kinda goofy.
>>
>>9676292
>full arm fin

what about in a similar way to bat suits?

That's what I was thinking of, but that brings a couple more issues. But for this hypothetical costume specifically, on a major note, as it is right now the front shark fins are the legs of the wearer, and the arms are there in a kinda taur-like fashion. Moving those fins to the arms makes the leg problem even more of a problem, with the dinky hind fins these sharks have, it'd be even worse to try to hide / not draw attention to a entire leg instead of a foot. On a minor note, arm fins make me think of a normie meme from a year or so ago involving sharks that I'd never be able to shake the reminder of.
>>
>>9676305
>a normie meme from a year or so ago
Anon if your color is even remotely similar everyone will think its left shark, you just gotta either own it or make your suit a different color.

Here's a thought. Create a piece of flexible fake coral to cover each foot. The tip of the fin comes down to touch the coral, but the human foot is hidden inside.
>>
>>9676321
...not op but that sounds kinda lame
>>
>>9676321

Hmm..

Depending on how much mobility limits you are willing to put up with, the piece of coral could be big enough to hide both feet, as in one piece 2 foot wide. Or the coral shoes could be big enough that when you stand with your feet together, it looks like one lump of coral.
>>
>>9676325

It's the esthetics I guess. better look when posing for pictures. Not necessarily the most practical for walking.
>>
>>9676336

Or, you build something completely different.

Say you wanted to do a mermaid sitting on a rock. You create a rock hoop skirt to hide your legs, then create the mermaid tail on the outside.

In this case a coral hoop skirt with the shark tail and fins draped front and back. Reasonably easy to walk in. Just a thought.
>>
still liking the smooth skin look for the feet under the fin the best. much more sleek
>>
>>9676350

LOL For the sleek look, you place the legs inside the tail, use the arms for the pectoral fins, lie on the ground and pull yourself along using the arms only.
>>
>>9676321
>>9676331
>>9676345
It's a thought, but personally I prefer to make costumes that look good in motion, even if I'm well aware people take more still images than video. Coral feet would both look awkward to walk with, and because most if not all species of not dead coral are rather brightly coloured, they'd draw attention away from the borderline greyscale (mild pun intended) of the rest of the costume.
Mermaid rock works for mermaids, because other than literally having your legs tied together in a wheel chair, there aren't many other options. But again, for the shark it comes back to the "What looks good in motion" thing.
>>9676350
Agreed. Although just about every foot option isn't optimal, the thing nearly all anthro sharks, costume or not, completely miss about sharks is the living torpedo shape with no unflowing irregularities along the body that they're so characteristically known for. Of course you're going to loose some of that grafting it to the human body, but it's doable to still have some of that sleekness when anthropomorphized. Sleek foot jives the best with that.
>>
>>9676361
That'd be hilarious, but by that point you might as well go full shark costume and skip trying to make it human like at all.
>>
>>9676364

Personally, was thinking of a harp seal costume, done like small Santa ( Body in sack hands and arms become feet legs and torso of character.) But you are right. That would work well in a wheelchair.

What our original poster is talking about here, is a variation on a mermaid costume. vaguely humanoid torso and shark tail.
>>
>>9676361
LOL christ

>>9676362
i say go for it and make it. i think youve got a good idea of whats gonna make the suit shine!
>>
>>9676371
Completely shark lower end with wheelchair would be the easiest fix for the foot problem, but that's the "Chuck the phone out because the screens cracked" solution. Indistinct black feet on fins is the least obtrusive option.
>>9676376
I'd like to, (wouldn't of gone past the "what if" stage if I didn't) but if I ever were to, it'd be a long way off from now, between the lack of funds and the other costumes that need refurbishing or complete start overs first.

>>
>>9676473
Set up a paypal using prepaid cards, or maybe you can pay the maker that way. Use a fake name and an address for a foreclosed house and watch for the mail every day.

>>9676557
Yeah some dude, might’ve been a councilman of a state, got outed. People found his FA, inkbunny, and his erotic writings. Even has a fursuit. Scott Chamberlain? Should be the name.
>>
>>9676473
Can I ask what you think will happen if people find out you have a fursuit? I was really anxious about my family finding out for a while but eventually I just told them because it let me store my suit way easier than trying to hide it. They asked what it was about and I just explained that I enjoyed the performing aspect of it (probably helped that they've both helped the local drama society in recent years) and they were fine with it.
Like that other anon said, if you want to wear it out to a convention or a meetup people are gonna at least see your face during the periods you don't have your mask on.
Normies are generally pretty receptive when they see a group of costumers out and about, especially if they're with kids who aren't afraid of mascot costumes (funnily enough I was when I was very young). The mentality that furries are widely despised is echoed a lot on 4chan but it doesn't carry over to real life since most people either don't know or care about the sexual side of the fandom which is what gets pushed the most online.
My favorite example of internet blowhards amounting to nothing was back in 2008-2009 on /b/ when there were a number of continuous threads on /b/ organising a protest and blockade at some furry con, threads full of people all organising when and where to meet, what they were going to bring, signs to make and all that razz. THREE people turned up, and they took shelter inside the convention when it started to rain.
I should try and dig those screencaps up from my /b/ folder at some point, I will never not love that rich example of internet vitriol amounting to jack shit.

How much of a difference would a muzzle like that make compared to one like Rufens? Is it still less breathable than a western suit? Sorry about all the questions
>>
>>9676978
I'd say its probably less breathable than a western suit, but there are a lot of cheats to get around it at the same time. air vents in the eyes, ears, nose.

At the end of the day a fursuit is still gonna be hot as fuck so besides that there's not much you can do. People suit in hot climates a lot anyway
>>
>>9677014
Alright thank you anon
Yeah I was thinking even if I did get a suit I'd use a cooling vest or something
I've heard about the plastic covering the eyes fogging up too, sounds kinda troublesome
>>
>>9677019
Some use glass defogging spray, but if you make sure your breathing can go out through mouth or nose, that will help a lot (or small holes near the eyes)
>>
Do any of you consider an age where it'd be too late to fursuit or an age where you'd wanna stop.

Personally i'm open to any age fursuiting but I can imagine people thinking that it's way too immature to be fursuiting at like 50 up

You won't die, kemono fursuits aren't hotter than any other suits if you get perforated aluminium
for the vision as well as get fans added. Also, a lot of people don't seem to know that japanese fursuits usually have hidden vent holes in the head (under ears, hair, etc).

Short answer: no.
For any costumery, the only real limiter is whether you can achieve the look of the costume that you're wearing well. With cosplay, any exposed body parts account for how good said cosplay is, so a wrinkly guy trying to cosplay a 16 year old isn't going to work. That's not really a problem with fursuiting, 'cause your completely covered up. If you're physically fit enough for it, anyone should go for it regardless of age.
Now being a anthropomorphic blob trying to fursuit on the other hand...
>>

There were a couple interested in my powered wing frame last thread so I finally got a prototype up in the air, you can view it here
>>9677201
It's on 2x speed again + needs some modifications but overall i'm very happy
>>
>>9677209
>Having the wings sit that high
No idea how heavy they are, but that looks like it'll be prone to pulling you backwards, having all of that extra weight sitting so far above your center of gravity.
Do they swivel back? 'cause I can guarantee you that even at that folded size it'll be nigh on impossible to walk about anywhere that isn't the middle of a open field if they don't.
Good on you though for having both wings on one actuator. Even after seeing this I know I'd never go about doing that, I like excessively fine control of body parts too much, even at the expense of practicality.

Yeah I noticed it was swinging a little bit on the highest point, I will probably slide some joints to make them sit a little lower (everything is not attached solid yet). I can see I would have to stand extremely straight when they are unfolded at the height theyre sitting now.
Atleast the frame is holding up very well even when i'm holding it horizontal.
The frame itself is 3KG in total atm.
>>
>>9677274
Do they swivel back? 'cause I can guarantee you that even at that folded size it'll be nigh on impossible to walk about anywhere that isn't the middle of a open field if they don't.
I'll do that when I have another actuator since that means I have to redesign my parts that attach to the actuator, and i'm swapping it out for a faster one first.
I don't intend on wearing this on a con floor, that would call for extreme problems.
>>
>>9677209
Thanks for sharing your progress; that's cool as hell.
>>
>>9677284
>>9677289
Even at where you red lined, yea, probably not the best for cramped convention halls. (Possibly doable if careful and folded, but the hassle being worth it is purely subjective.) But there's still doorways and furniture to be navigated. I've knocked my fair share of table items and heads with even kinda undersized wings to know that you'll never get away from the space they take up.
When you do redesign to account for swivel, would it be possible to flip the lift actuator around so most of the weight sits in the dip of the back, instead of right below and behind the head, or would that muck up the mechanics / intended design too much?
>>
>>9677303
>When you do redesign to account for swivel, would it be possible to flip the lift actuator around so most of the weight sits in the dip of the back, instead of right below and behind the head, or would that muck up the mechanics / intended design too much?
I was thinking about that, but atm too tired to draw it out, definitely is an option yes. It will help a lot with stabilizing.

Probably because itabags are more of a crazy otaku thing for devotion of existing characters, while OC bags are generally considered meh and a more western thing. Hard to explain, I guess it's two hobbies that wouldn't meet under normal terms. Furries are much bigger in the West than in Japan tbf so they possibly haven't had any exposure to this weeb shit.

>>
>>9679498
What makes in a Rufen copy?? Because it's face looks like every other short muzzle kemono suit? I'm sick of people thinking that Kline is THE japanese suit company. That's how kemono suits look, I don't get what else people expect to be made when that's what the art has always looked like.
>>
>>9679768
That's exactly why it's annoying. There's hundreds of kemono suits but people feel that rufen is the default and they copy it. Take a look at the photo, they've moved the ears to the side of the head (lol wut snow leopard), added horns, it even looks like there's a fin on the now dragon like tail, not to mention the ~kawaii~ proportions. Why couldn't they have just made a normal leopard kemono suit, it would have looked much better

I think, honestly, that choosing to make a living as a suitmaker, unless your skills are god-tier, is the dumbest idea in terms of letting your skills grow, since the pay is shit and you have to spend most of your time working on basic commissions of yet another twinky rave fox. i mean.. it's not really the suit makers fault
his legs are incredibly tiny and i assume he didn't want any padding so yeah.
>>
Stupid question but what exactly do you do at a furry con? Just hang out in suits and chill, make friends? Are you expected to participate in any activities like the big dance or after parties? What’s furry etiquette?
>>
>>9685123
hang out with people, go to panels, buy things at the dealers hall, roam around and look at the costumes
events are entirely opt in, I've never been to one of the dance events personally

Etiquette is about the same as normal conventions, don't be rude, don't be grabby. Ask people for photos or before making physical contact, etc.

I usually chill, spend a bunch of money at the artist alley and dealer's den, take pics, hang out in the game room, attend the dance-related events... and uh.. I guess that's it.
I don't do much different than what I'd do at anime cons desu. furcons are more fun for me though, everybody is so much friendlier and more approachable.
>>
>>9685123
also like anon said, don't be grabby and shit.
lot of people have this weird habit of taking a suiters props and running expecting a chase or something? it's annoying and rude
i also hate having my suit's head rubbed/scratched since it messes with the fur.
>>
>>9685132
I don't mind people petting/stroking as long as they rub with the direction of the fur and not mess it up

Remember kids, Discords kill generals. If you want a happy and thriving series of 4chan threads, don't encourage mass exodus to elsewhere where posts will only get mirrored when the poster goes out of their way to do so, and ultimately leaving the general dead with no regular posters. (Which granted is less of a problem on /cgl/ due to the slower traffic, but still I worry. This place has slowed down massively since a few threads ago.)

>>
>>9686704
That’s far from what I wanted to do.
I made the discord because of how these threads usually go. Eventually some anons bitch about how it’s either furry related or not cosplay/costume related, then janitors start deleting the threads; then discussion ceases. I like seeing people be interested in fursuits as a craft.

I myself refrain from posting links or just handing them out unless people ask. The discord was a made as a precaution around this time last year actually.
>>
>>9686973
Sorry I sounded redundant in that post, it’s late.

While wigs on fursuits isn't unheard of, it can be hard to pull off. The biggest issue is the wig being too small for a fursuit head shape/size. The fursuits that do it well seem to take more than one wig and reconstruct it.

Apparently a bunch of people are coming forward about her scamming, she was previously known in the fandom as Cynical_Sergal.

>Constantly e-begs for money using her financial status and health problems for leverage
>Immediately buys commissions even though she owes tons of refunds

I wasn't really 'assaulted' and moreso some idiot in the dealer's den at an anime con slapped/pushed really hard on the back of my suit's head.
it didn't hurt or anything, it's just obnoxious that some people actually still really hate furries in 2017 lmao
>>
>>9691200
For me it's been people either not respecting my suit (pulling on the ears, the back bow/wings or otherwise) or they get aggressive with physical affection. Unfortunately I do have to get one of my suit's "ears" resewn on because someone yanked really hard and I couldn't react fast enough (They were taller and came from behind so I couldn't see haha). My suit handler told them to back off.

I get the whole "people are gonna wanna hug the giant stuffed animal" thing but there's been times where I'm trying to rush to the lounge or to leave and someone forces me into a hug or something. Like, I get pulled into it or they assume a hug is fine. It's normally the socially retarded types but then you of course get the normies or the people who think a suit means you're a free for all.

If you guys need advice, here's my top three-
1. Don't suit alone in public. If you're at a con, you should still have someone to have your back.
2. Beware of drunks. They will appear, especially at cons. They will not respect you or your costume.
3. If you need to take the head off, do it. Tell them to fuck off. You're still a person and you need to take care of your needs first. If a person makes you uncomfortable, just say no. Breaking the magic is less for the people around you (except maybe kids) and more for your personal privacy as a performer and person.

>>9691739
Some people just don't realize there's an actual human being in a suit or cosplay, so they get unnecessarily aggressive or affectionate.. It happens to all who don't not look like a regular dressed person.
I've had a drunk person break my costume before, I learned to be very wary of drunk people now and not rely on con security to throw them out.
Other than that not so much, maybe the occassional socially lacking person going batshit affectionate over my suit or on how much they love the character.
I prefer to build all my outfits sturdy enough now to handle most of this without breaking, and I tend to sacrifice looks more for comfortability and visibility rather than before.

I have a character with hypno eyes but I'm not 'into' it.
>>
>>9693586
It's hit or miss imo, it can create a very unique look for your character instead of all the generic toony eyes, or be completely missing the ball and look off. For hyenas and suits with more softer color design I think it works very well, but if you already have a very busy pattern or a very bright color palette, it's going to be too much. Your colors are quite muted, so I think it goes very well!

For fabric, the faux fur was about 20usd a yard and the minky for the spikes was 13usd a yard.

But I made the insides are made of upholstery foam which I paid $16 a roll, yoga mat 15$-20$, and floor foam, which is like $20 for a four pack.

But honestly I wouldn't be able to tell you how much I spent just on the tail. Its my first fursuit and ive messed up a lot, so I have had a bunch of wasted materials.

3D model for my Zeraora fursuit (new Ultra sun and moon mythical)
The base is 3d printed, the back of the head and ears are there for patterns so it's not as detailed. Will post my progress in the threads (next thread)
