I guess I'll be the first to post. I'm working on a Yuri cosplay from Doki Doki Literature club. To be completely honest I'm probably going to cheat and just use a regular white blouse instead of making one, and I don't know enough about knitting to make the sweater-vest she has.

looks pretty good! quick question though, do you have the neckline/front closure come up that high to hide a lack of sweater vest or was it a miscalculation in patterning?

The sweater vest is there, I just accidentally bought one that was too big, so you can't really see it since the vest neckline is too low.

You could draft your own? Just start doing rough sketches on how you think you would assemble it, and spend a lot of time finger-fucking jackets in stores to get a good idea on different methods of construction. Then make one out of muslin first to make sure you have construction and fit down before starting with the actual material you'd use.

>>
>>9719805
There are a few good books on pattern drafting out there if you want to try it, and the picture you posted actually does a pretty good job of showing how the coat is constructed.

If you put the effort into it, you also could use it as a cute every-day wear coat desu. I'd imagine there's a few outfits it'd go well with.

It's actually pretty easy once you've had a bit of practise. Look at existing garments in the same shape and find out where the seams are. That's where you separate it into pieces.

Most patterns break down into simple geometric shapes tapered slightly to the lines of your body. Pleats and things are a little more difficult but if you start with something easy like a vest you can then build on those skills.
>>
>>9722396
That's epic! Are you the same anon from the Instagram thread? That level of detailing looks the same.

>>
>>9726556
why would anyone post in here if they aren't sure how it would be received?
the bad cosplay and cringe threads are a staple of cgl now and most people would rather not end up in them, so why would they post in a progress thread where they could be lifted and posted

Avoiding criticism won’t make you a better cosplayer. Rarely do people get shit on in the progress threads, they’re just given tips on how to make it better while they’re still -get this- in progress.

Trolls that shit on people working hard to make cool costumes are typically reported pretty quickly.

What do you use for modeling? I tried a randomly suggested piece of software and was too retarded to manage, hoping to find something easier for learning

I use Maya cause it’s free for students and I took a class for it. It’s p easy once you know some of the menus and functions, though I’ve heard Blender is much easier to pick up if you don’t like an overwhelming number of buttons.

If you’re using it for 3D print stuff, download MeshLab or something to quickly check the watertightness of your models before printing.

>>
>>9742799
That's rude. This is the progress thread you know.

>>9742739
You do need a lot more practice. Sharp knives will save your cuts and make them clean. Using a ruler will straighten your lines. Another tip I'd give is to use contact adhesive/cement rather than hot glue.

Good luck!
>>
>>9742801
I used contact adhesive everywhere except on the rolly parts. I actually traced the gun from the game, so most of the lines match up with the reference. Thanks for the tips though! Please also understand I'm really far from being done with this one, and am working on cleaning up the lines with my dremel. It's not my best work, but I'm still really proud of how far I've come since I started out.
>>
>>9742817
Other tips I'd give is invest in a woodburner for those detail lines, rather than trying to dremel them. You can put the woodburner next to a metal ruler (be careful for burning your fingers!) and then the recessed detail can be smoother too.
>>
>>9742821

Paint, which im actually pretty decent at. This is my 2nd time making a similar gun- I made Rubi a while back and this is Miss Moxxi's Probe. They basically have the same idea behind them, different handles!! On this one, I want to fill the handle part with colored resin so it pops.

>>
>>9742914
It all comes right at the source. You cannot make bad foamcutting better by painting it, it makes it look cheaper than a toy honestly, maybe keep this one at home and start practicing by making small but simple props that go back to the basics. If I'm being honest, I think it looks decent- and I'm genuinely my harshest critic. I'm definitely not a master foamsmith- I never claimed to be. I want to know what I can do better and how I can improve.
>>
>>9742930
Not that guy but anyways;

The ref model is straight but your prop has some sort of cave-in at the top?

Some lines that should be straight are off like the bottom of the gun.

Proportions don't match (though that's not a disaster)

Foam doesn't easily allow for the level of detail you're going for so i'd advise using some alternate materials in addition to foam for smaller details.

And desu, i'd just use screws for screws if i were you.

One thing that might help: if you want clean subtle lines running along your foam, put a ruler along your line, make a superficial cut with a very sharp knife and warm it up with a heat gun.

This will make the foam contract and leave you with clean lines.

And while we're at it, i'd just use stencils for letters and other small paint detailing if i were you.
Cutting out vinyl stickers to mask are a great way to get a crisp pattern on props too.
>>
>>9742939
The "desu" should be "to be honest"
One thing to remember is that general shapes are not something that you'd want to correct during detailing. Starting out right will spare you a lot of effort and produce a way better result.

Do note i'm not amazing at making props either, but i hope you'll get some use out of what i've learned myself so far.
>>
>>9742927

>>
>>9742739
I find sometimes it's easier to keep layering on small details than it is to carve them out if that helps! Working with something more solid like foamboard too can be more forgiving and give straighter lines (I honestly try to use that whenever possible because I still cant do decent EVA shaping/cutting to save my life).
But don't let that other anon get to you and definitely keep at it! The level of effort and detail you're putting in is really something.

>>
>>9748919
The buzzcut section is really weird-looking. It kinda looks like felted dog hair and not like human stubble. The fitting and the hairline on it have to be way more precise than you have it.
On the hair side, you can tell where the fuzzier top wig meets the clumpier, wetter-looking Hannah Montana wig really easily. It also seems like you cut the top wig yourself because the edges are very blunt and unnatural for such a curly style. For something like that the textures and cutting angles need to be more consistent.
Maybe in a year when you're in high school you can salvage the hair part into a ponytail clip or something.

The bottom part wasn’t dry yet when I took the photo to be fair. And the fit looks a bit odd because my head is a weird shape (and I’m fitting waist length hair under it). But I see what you mean about the felted looking hair. I’m still not sure how to fix the buzz part, though.

Currently working on a Thomas Bangalter Helmet for Katsucon. It's far from finished, but by the time it's complete, it'll have 256 leds playing animations out of the front visor, along with light up side bars and ear pucks.

I am very, very, very far behind.

I hope you win. If you do you win cosplay forever. Its just too perfect. Nether Gundam winning an international cosplay event representing its homeland no less would be nothing short of legendary.

This is actually my current build

That's the idea! We'll see how well it goes. It's in July and I look forward to it.

Imitating buzzcuts/undercuts with wigs is pretty difficult to do, even for practiced wig stylists. This particular wig might be difficult to salvage, but if you ever feel like trying it again, consider using short-pile faux fur in the color you want for the undercut instead of the fuzz-thing you have there. There's a few tutorials for making more realistic undercuts, but apart from having to shave part of your own hair, I think the faux fur ones tend to have the best results. Hope this helps!

Looks great so far! I love when people use rhinestones to set off details. Hope you post more progress on the rest of the costume!

Unfortunately I didn’t see this message until after the con. But I’ll give that a try for wig Mach 2! I spirit gummed the heck out of the wig though and used stage makeup and stuff on where any slightly exposed hair could be in case it popped out.

Even though it's a joke cosplay I'm really happy with the wig. I cut some hair off of a white wig (it's a shit wig that I never use anymore and would otherwise throw away), dyed the fibers, made the fibers into wefts, and sewed the wefts onto another spare white wig.

I'll bite, I've been working on Raidou Kuzunoha for Katsucon lately! (Forgive the awkward fit on my mannequin, it being slightly smaller and having boobs when I'll be binding doesn't help.)

Something about just isn't quite right. I hate the paint job and have no idea how to fix that besides priming it again and starting over. I also think im going to redo the orb area/part because it just doesnt look cohesive/match the rest of the gun. Sighhhhh

Working on hylian armor link from botw! Need to trim down the chest guard a bit because it's too long. Embroidered the tunic by hand, in the middle of finishing all the leather pieces. Waiting for my boot base to come in so I can make boot covers too!

Any recs on which weapons I should make?

That looks good to me. Just add a bit more detailing maybe? Use a very fine brush and add some darker colours around the edges or where there'd naturally be deeper shadows.

You will be such a cute Link.

As far as weapons, I think anything guardian would probably be the biggest challenge if that's what you're into. But I also think the clubs might be kind of fun, or one of the nice bows from the game. Good luck.

finishing up some houseki no kuni cosplays for katsucon. first time going so i wanted to make some stuff to debut
~ the bodysuit is gonna be two pieces with the belt hiding the seamline, and the shorts just need the waistband, zipper, and straps and theyll be done... things are just going a bit slow because i want my pieces to be super clean for my dream con
>>
>>9759360
you could go for the fabric shown (tafetta or anything like it), or something more flowy like chiffon (you could work with layers). even cotton or velvet could work

yeah I don't like you anymore

What's the name of the fabric you used? It looks faux leather in the shirt pic but not in the shorts

Nice work and I love that you went for the accurately shaped bangs. It's been 25 years and I still see far too many people fux up her bang shape by not cutting the wig at all or not curling them under. I also like the bun placement.
