originally it was called Hawkeye and it was famous for its award winning flavor, earning the nickname Red Delicious.

but it got popular right when the supermarket was invented, and a bunch of browning apples on a shelf is unappetizing so the apples were modified to be more colorful, more shelf stable and more hardy for transport, which turned it into the apple we know and, well, know today.

Really photogenic fruits often kinda suck compared to some more "organic" looking ones from my experience. Red delicious looks exactly like its name but the best apples I've had are some of the local fresh whatever no-name branded ones.
