Realistically speaking, is sushi worth it from an energy perspective? A decent portion of nigiri sushi should be around 500-1000 grams of rice (like a dozen or two dozens of pieces). The rice alone should fulfill your minimum energy needs, if you're an average human.
Brother, if you are looking at food this way, just eat oatmeal, boiled chicken, peas and brocoli
>>21005167I'm not just looking at the price/energy ratio, it's just that sushi is often considered overpriced luxury food, but is it really? I think it is both a delicacy when done right (not like those disgusting california rolls and what not, just rice with fresh raw ingredients) AND it's more fulfilling than let's say, chicken nuggets
>>21005187Jesus Christ
If you want a working man's sushi with a better cost to calorie ratio, get kimbap
>>21005192How did you know my name
>>21005198>kimbapI hate all Korean foods that have "bap" in them.
>>21005187>overpriced luxury foodIt's cheap as hell if you make it yourself. Like $1 per serving or less. You can also make sushi out of anything you have, like>let's say, chicken nuggetsOk! See pic
>>21005317Looking at this made me actually sick
>>21005317>It's cheap as hell if you make it yourself. If we're talking original style sushi with raw fish, then that can be pretty expensive in landlocked countries.
>>21005632Why are you, as a landlocked flyover, even considering eating seafood
I always assumed sushi was a luxury but its really surprisingly filling. And cheap af at grocery store delis.
How much difference do the toppings make assuming they're all uniform in size
>>21005165Generally nigiri has from 10-15g of rice per piece, jsyk.
jelly donuts are superior
>>21005668yeah 1000 grams is over 2 pounds of rice kek
>>21005695>300 dorrah gaijin!
>1kg of rice is a decent portionwhat?
>>21005641Elitist-anon, pls
>>21005632You can make cheap sushi rolls outta anything. Most Japanese people aren't eating kingfish sashimi every time they eat sushi. More likely they are eating canned tuna, tofu or egg roll sushi. The cheap stuff. Canned tuna + mayo maki rolls are authentic sushi. Costs like $2 to make 2 big rolls (16 pieces)
>>21005734Sushi is cheap as shit in Japan too, the memelords over here overhyped it and overpriced it.
>>21005668>>21005695>>21005722Okay then, maybe I overestimated the rice percentage, however, pic related is exactly 529g, the plastic container is just 18g. I only eat lunch (no dinner, no breakfast, no snacking) during the work week, and when I order two of these (so approx 1022g of sushi, rice + fish included), not only does my stomach feel fuller, I also have enough energy without feeling hungry at all. So it has to be at least 2000 kcal. If the rice is max 15*12=360g, then that provides approx 1.2*360*2=864 kcal. Does the fish really have enough calories to cover the rest? +let's say ~150-200kcal from the soy sauce (I think i's 100ml), so about 800-900 from the fish?
BEHOLD! The pinnacle of sushi in my country: Cheddar nigiri.I thought it was tamago...

>>21005187>>21005165Bro you're probably fat as fuck so you can afford to go in negative anyway
>>21006451I have gained a lot of weight since I started eating sushi, went from 63~64kg to 65~66kg in the morning, but my BMI is so default that I don't even have to change anything when I open the calculatorhttps://www.calculator.net/bmi-calculator.html
>>21005317based
>>21005734Yeah. This is usually my filler when I get sushi. 50% - 75% is Poor Man's Tuna Rolls or California Rolls. I will enjoy the ocasional piece of fatty tuna or unagi and maybe a fancy roll once in a blue moon.
do they sell canned unagi in your area?
Canned fugu is best

>>21007030Are we talking about a time when people ate two meals a day with more hard labor than today? And the meal consisted of only rice, pickles and soup.Wealthier families added grilled fish or NIMONO as a side dish.
>>21008004You are eating too much carbs for either your genetics or your activity level.
>>21005734the point of eating sushi is to eat the meat raw, they don't eat cooked tuna in their sushi in Japan, stop being such a retard
>>21008228Based Japanese cultural & historical expert
>>21005165>Realistically speaking, is sushi worth itNoIt's a bit of a meme food really (like Nouvelle cuisine) They are overpriced/overrated canapes - I thought the novelty had worn off but obviously not.
>>21008317>They are overpriced>>21006130This one costs 11 Euro. It's about as cheap as most palatable burgers (non-fast food), but it feels - at least to me - much more filling.

California rolls re the best, especially with extra mayo, that'll fill you up good mm mm mmm

Ew, see-food.
>>21005187Chill out, Mr Miyagi
>>21005187What makes something sushi? It's the rice. Sushi is sushi because of the vinegared and sweetened rice. If you want raw fish? It's sashimi, a type of sushi, however, you can cook a whole steak and put it on a pile of sushi rice and you have sushi. Make it out of whatever the fuck you want and, here's the kicker, if the fish was farm raised, you can eat it raw because it wasn't exposed to the parasites that ocean caught fish were.To get ocean caught fish safe enough for sushi you gotta freeze it to a degree that pretty fucking insane to actually ensure parasite death. But, I am getting off track, shove some sushi rice into a big Mac and you made sushi. So make whatever the fuck you want.
>>21009848>But, I am getting off track, shove some sushi rice into a big Mac and you made sushi.WRONG! While it may be true that "sushi" comes from "sui" + "shi" - vinegared rice - the rice has to be on the OUTSIDE of whatever fish, vegetable or meat it is preserving. And you explicitly said>shove>intowhen it should be "shove onto" at the very least, but "shove" already seems somewhat inappropriate to describe the delicate masterful skill that's required to envelop something in sushi. It obviously doesn't have to be completely enveloped (in example, nigro is just from one side, the underside, or sometimes you can have stuff sticking out of a maki roll) but nonetheless, I declare myself the victor of this exchange among intellectuals. Thank you kind Sir.

Anyone tried to make sushi in a microwave?
>>21012324Quick Frozen Sushi
>>21012385How can they freeze it? I thought freezing ruins sushi
Sushi kind of isn't actually worth the effort for me anymore I used to make sushi regularly and with tinned tuna. but once I started learning how to make curries I wasn't going to waste that tuna. I still keep the sushi rice and nori stocked and in the cupboard but only break them out if I see avocados on special.
>>21012478https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KF3QD-nEbwgQuick freezing using magnetism, electromagnetic waves, or vibration is also available, but it is not yet widely used because of its high cost.

I only eat salmon sushi and tuna sushi. Don't want to even think about eating all the garbage covered sushi you posting here
>>21005317This is why i keep coming back.
>>21012570Just kidding.Sushi cooked with grilled mackerel is also delicious.Fillet the mackerel and rub sugar all over it.When it starts to get watery, rub salt all over it.Then leave it overnight in the fridge. Finally, rinse off the salt with water and grill the mackerel. If you feel the fish is too salty, you can put it in water for an hour to remove the salt before grilling.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvQLqcSciUwBesides mackerel, you can serve it with eggs or boiled vegetables. If you can get it, gari, which is pickled ginger in sweet vinegar, would be great.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvQLqcSciUw
>>21012478The whole fish seem to deal with it. I think it's pretty rare to get seafood that hasn't been frozen at least once during the supply chain
