Is it true that you only need these three knives or this is just a tik-tok/youtube-shorts thing?
>>21704526I just use one Chinese cooking hatchet. Does everything.
>>2170452Where are the breaking knife and boning knife?
>>21704526enough steak knives to set the table would be nice
>>21704537ive got your boning knife right here
>>21704526you only need one knife, anon.
>>21704526bro did you know they invented a thing called sliced bread you don't need a bread knifehonestly a paring knife isn't really that useful eitherjust get a good chef's knife
>>21704526It depends on what you're cooking. If you butcher a lot of meat, you'll want a cleaver, maybe a cimeter, and possibly something for flensing. If you deal with a lot of root vegetables, a Chinese cleaver and a peeler are going to be way more useful to you than a paring knife. If you don't buy or bake a lot of unsliced bread, you won't really need a bread knife.Seems like a liter of hogwash to me.
I just need two or three of the same knife so I don't have to immediately wash one if I'm cutting anything that can cross contaminate. One knife for every cutting board you use.
>>21704533beat me to it, lol
>>21704562this nigga really buys bread wrapped in plastic
you only really need a chef's knife and a bread knife
>>21704895Bread knives are useless if you keep your chefs knife sharp.
>>21704526swap out that bread knife for a boning knife
>>21704526Biggest knife use in order: 1. Chef 8"2. Bread knife3. Paring knife to open shit4. Steak knives5. Peeler6. Fancy long knife (16") - I use it on briskets for slicing, also for filletsI have a cleaver and boning knife, I really don't use them that often, if ever. A boning/filet knife is MASSIVELY important if you fish for yourself tho. I think the last time I used my cleaver I was spatchcocking chicken. The paring knife really isn't "needed" - it just becomes the de facto go to knife for opening packages and wrapping from a knife set. You could use a chef knife for that, it's just heavier.
>>21705001I was thinking a 4" blade paring knife is the replacement for the boning/filet knife.
>>2170452690 percent of amateur home cooks would be fine with just 2, a good petty knife and any bread knife.
>>21704526Unless you actually slice entire loafs of bread, you don't even need the bread knife. To cut open a bun, etc, just use the chef's knife.
>>21704526Your chef's knife should be sharp enough to cut bread without messing up the shape or crust.Your chef's knife can do literally everything a paring knife can do unless you have Parkinson'sThe only thing a chef's knife can't do is go between a dinner fork and a plate when cutting prepared food.Really, all you need is a chef's knife and enough steak knives to set your table. If you have no idea how to sharpen your chef's knife then a serrated/bread knife is acceptable as well
>>21706454Oh yeah, if you're butchering your meat then a cleaver + filet knife are super useful as >>21705001 saidBut if you were doing that then you wouldn't be asking about knives on a Mongolian throat singing forum
>>21704526It REALLY depends on who you are. You can always start out small, and then buy more knives later. A knife is only as sharp as the user.
>>21704526>general slicing knife>knife specialized in slicing bread>knife to spread spreads and peel fruits and vegetablesSeems about right.
>>21704623Same. It helps to have a bigass block with tons of slots for anything. The only thing I have more than 1 of which won't fit in my block is kitchen shears.
>>21704526Huggbees told me not to buy knife sets https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uMrmGPga9s
>>21704526for me, it's the humble potato knife
>>21706507ein kartofelmesserspecifically for messing kartoffel?
>>21706454>Really, all you need is a chef's knife and enough steak knives to set your table. This is not incorrect but it also misses the point. I processed about 2.5lbs of pearl onions for pickling today and I'm glad I had a smaller knife for it. You're not giving knife advice to (you) you're giving knife advice to someone who doesn't know what he needs in a knife.
>>21704526I had that exact same Wüsthof bread knife and it was horrible. It was too thick at the bevel and steered horribly. It was impossible to cut a straight slice of bread if the loaf had an even slightly hard crust.
>>21706536I cut all kinds of stuff with it, meat, potatoes, vegetables, garlic, onionThe small size makes it very agile
>>21706536>specifically for messing kartoffel?unironically yes. If you want to follow the rounded contour of the potato you need a perfectly straight edge. A rounded edge will counterintuitively always try to attempt to cut in a straight path - because any three points on its edge form a plane.
>santoku>sujihikiall you need
>>21706454>using a chef's knife to break down beef primals. You crazy, french boi.
>>21706890Most people aren't buying primal cuts. There are butchers for that - they usually do a very good job.
>>21704538>steak knivesWhy are westoids such barbarians.
>>21706944sorry you dont have the jaw strength to chew meat that hasnt been precut into tiny bits for you
>>21704526I've gotten by with those three, but I don't really do anything special. Sometimes I feel it would be nice to have a slicing knife but it's rare.
>>21706999>the jaw strength to chew meatSo, your steak is hard? And you don't cut the meat using your steak knife, you just bite it to chunks with your jaw? The steak knife is just there to show people you're armed?
>>21707007why yes my meat is hard would you like a taste babyface?
>>21707012Implying to cut your penis with a knife, sorry I'm not like you people. These trans people should leave and just rope themselves in silence. Jesus Christ.
>>21707020>walks into it mouth first>doubles downI admire your tenacity. I hope you bring that kind of go-getter attitude to the bedroom... or at least the kitchen.
>>21706944You make your chef cut your steaks for you with a steak knife instead? Making your steak cold? What? Slurp more slanty eyed fag-o
That probably covers 90% of all use other than steak knives.I also like a clever but i break down a lot of meat. most people aren't doing whole chickens and beef or pig bones 5x a week
>>21704562I buy whole sides of salmon and use my bread knife on it.Rips right through the scales when I portion it out. It was always a hassle when I tried to use one of the other knives.I’ve had people whine at me that I should remove the skin first (that sounds like a pain, plus I eat the skin) or that the cut is going to be “ragged” (shut up retard, I’m cooking for me, not a restaurant).I don’t see what the problem is.
>>21704526all i needbut probably gonna buy chinese cleaver on 11.11
>>2170914511.11 sale, y-you too?
>>21709115Your chef's knife should be sharp enough to cut through a salmon (and the scales) without any tearing. Do you not sharpen your knives?
>>21709384My bread knife cares not for your “maintenance”.
For me its >scalloped bread knife >single bevel yanagiba to process fish in 1 cut per side>nakiri/chinese cleaver for veg prep>eagles beak knife for cleaning mussel shells and beards>8" vic/henkel/whustof for general cutting>deba for processing chicken and waterfowl
>>21709457mhmif you put your knives in the dishwasher then i will find you and i will kill you
>>21709519For me it's>12 inch chef's knife for precision work>Bastard sword for general cutting>Chainsaw for big jobs
>>21704526They cover 90% of what a typical home cook would do. To be honest, I don't use my paring knife that much; so that's something I would cheap out on.I prefer an offset bread knife.>>21704562They're good for slicing tomatos
>>21710636Despite what shitty ads and Cutco reps may tell you, any chef's knife that isn't treated like total garbage (and gets honed occasionally) can cut through a tomato like nothing
>>21704526I prefer a nice flat bladed chopper.
>>21704533does it loaves nicely?
>>21709541>hurl nox brox into dishwasher>yank it through a $19.99 pull sharpener>cuts like a charmmy 'brox cares not for your knife maintenance autism
>>21710768>yank it through a $19.99 pull sharpener>cuts like a charmHe has never experienced a properly sharpened knife and thinks the shitty jagged ridge left by his pull through "sharpener" is an actual edge.Sad.
>>21710768why would you get a $20 pull "sharpener" when you can get a proper honing rod for $15
>>21711079wealth expands the range of possibilities and empowers people to shape their lives more intentionally
>>21709145>>21709207based 11.11 smart shoppers
>>21704526>Is it true that you only need these three kniveskindaif you go to culinary school you'll typically get>these 3 + flexible boning knife + utility knife + honing rod (not a knife, still worth mentioning)sometimes a slicer, sometimes a birds beak knife, sometimes an additional alternative to the chefs knife i.e. Santoku or Chinese vegetable cleaverand you really don't need moreunless you get into Fish or Butchering specificallypersonally at home I only use my chinese cleaver, birds beak and bread knifeat work I also use a chefs and pairing knifethe latter one mostly for garnishes
>>21711079>when you can get a proper honing rod for $15the only proper honing rod you can get is pic related a>F. Dick Dickoron (Classic - is usually the best choice)and it's ~80€ (for the Classic)there's a reason why literally every serious butcher has F. Dick honing rodspartly for the jokesbut mostly because these are the best in the worldand it's not even close
>>21711203it's just a piece of steel, there is absolutely no difference who made it
>>21711460>hurr durr surface finishing and refinement doesn't existsure anonthen get your subpar honing rod and complain that it doesn't work or damages your knife
>>21704526If you don't care about how the cuts look you can do 99% of cutting with a serrated steak knife.
>>21704526Why the fuck would anyone need a bread knife? Here in the first world they sell the shit already sliced
>>21713711People with taste bake their own bread
>>21704526>>21704533I've been using a cheap fine-serrated steak knife for years. It's the spork of knives. This isn't it but you get the idea.
>>21713757forgot pic>>21713739I cut bread with the same fine serrated steak knife. Knives are such a meme. The only other one I might have use for occasionally is a butcher knife but even then I never use mine.
