Honestly I just now realize how much Corona's artwork is carrying the Transformers book. The writing of it is really mid.

Buying something means making something of a commitment to me so I always give books a full arc if I was interested enough to be on my pull list. I'm incredibly underwhelmed by this, however. I don't know if it was because of how much I hyped myself up for it, the hype of the marketing, the build up and wait for it, but whatever it was it fell with a dull thud.
Right off the bat, the coloring is atrocious, I was immediately turned off by the preview when it was released. I don't have any other complaints about the art, but Jordie Bellaire is very rarely good and needs to quit her job.
There is no breathing room. What little down time there is is used entirely for exposition. I am a Joe fan, I know who these characters are but when you have people like this >>146335495 who clearly doesn't what are they going to get out of it? You need to be bringing new people in. You've married Transformers to this, why are those fans still disinterested? Because there isn't anything of note so far outside of the Cobra Commander miniseries.
I really hope this turns around. Like I said, I commit to the first arc and then drop it if I don't like it. Right now this is fully in the drop pile and it has until the end of volume one to convince me otherwise.

Could not disagree more. Corona was ruining the book and Howard is such a massive improvement. Corona felt like he was doing a bad DWJ impression and never came into his own. Howard is actually bringing his style to the book.
The real issue is that Daniel Warren Johnson isn't drawing this himself, that was the big draw to the book. It had an energy and tone that wasn't like anything before. Corona brought us back to just being a Transformers comic. Again, Howard's is an improvement, but it is very filler flashback art. I feel like I'm back reading IDW again, I don't like it and I want DWJ back. I don't know why Kirkman didn't throw more money at him instead of letting him go do his own books. Big mistake there.

My biggest issue is that we were sold this as G1 when its WAY darker and edgier. It feels like Bayverse with a G1 skin than actual G1. Other than that I have no complaints about the writing. I love how trigger happy DWJ is with the deaths. There are so many characters that we can get fan favorites in and out and bots like Beachcomber can actually shine.

G.I. Joe has a cast of hundreds of characters and only 20 or so of them matter.
Duke, Flynt, Lady Jaye, Snake Eyes, Scarlett and Roadblock.
Shipwreck, Bazooka, Dail Tone, Quick Kick, Native American Guy... and Sgt. Slaughter.
And that's already pushing it in terms of fucks given. Duke's team is made of almost all expendable Joes. Baroness will obviously jump ship and hop on Destro's dick the first chance she gets. It's doing the same dance as Transformers where it's all Ulitimate G1 and killing off YOUr favorite 80's toy is the only spice added to this 40 year old goulash.

Starscream qnd Soundwave were able to patch Skywarp into Teletraan, but that could be described as clumsy at best
It might maje a bit of sense to recharacterize one of the combaticons as more of a field medic and use the HISS tank as spare parts. But I can't see Starscream giving up his mobility until another means is secured

My one big complaint about Cobra Commander is that he set up his organization WAY too quickly. In the original Marvel, it took him years to recruit a bunch of disaffected people and gather enough resourcers for Cobra to be a global threat. In Skybound, he did all in a few months at most, I don't care how much Energon you've got, secretely recruiting thousands of people to be loyal to your cause is not that easy.

This is one of the original 1982 Joes, but he didn't really have a huge role in the 80s cartoons or comics, they got a second heavy machine-gunner in 1984, and Roadblock is a much more important, more popular character.

This isn't like killing Ironhide, it's like killing Sideswipe or Bluestreak, someone who's recognizably part of the original cast, but didn't really do anything noteworthy. For comparison, IDW's last GI Joe reboot killed Duke at the beginning of the first issue.

the Scarlett mini was probably the best, Cobra Commander got dull fast and Destro was meh, both riding that nostalgia dick hard, but they're all waaay below Void Rivals and Transformers in terms of giving you a reason to care

Holy shit taste. CC > Duke > Destro > Scarlett. Cobra Commader was the absolute peak of the series. Masterfully introducing so much lore and characters effortlessly. It was a genuine delight. Duke was a standard Joe comic, but it was competent and set up a ton of interesting character beats and plots. Destro was middle range, at best. It didn't feel like the writer's heart was in it. It set up what it needed to and then got out of the way. If it weren't for Thomspson coming out and directly saying Jinx and Scarlett weren't gay I'd have said there was absolutely nothing going for this series. Horrifically dull, confusing, awful art, and just all around the worst of EU by far.
Based on the rest of your post its obvious you're just anti-Joe and that's really sad. G.I. Joe has more character depth than Transformers and I say that as a big fan of both.

Did the same. I was never into GI Joe though, mainly due to 0 exposition to it in my country. The issues I read weren't bad but not good enough to buy them so I halted it for now. Still buying Void Rivals but not a fan of the presentation and the character writing either even though I like the idea and the setting quite much. So far TF is the only series I consider decent.
Not great so far, but not bad either. Something bothers me with TF too but I cannot tell you what. Probably the pacing and how quickly characters change their mindset, join a group, get over a death or do something you didn't expect out of nowhere. I wonder if it would be better if things moved a bit more slowly.

I agree about the new artist being better than Corona though. Corona was just a worse DWJ with no upside, the new artist breathes some life into the TFs. I agree with the other anon about the faces, the perfect style for me would be Howard's bot faces and DWJ's action scenes.
