Just looked up if there were ANY practical reason to make your bed, and all of them came down to subjective shit like appearance, or "making you feel better".
Only even remotely actual reason I could find would be to reduce dust landing on the sheet itself, but if you wash the sheets at the same time you wash your blanket, that is quite literally a non issue, especially if you wash them often.

Depends on just how solidly they're build. Those do look pretty sturdy, so most stuff you can fit on top should be fine, unless of cause you wanted to sit/stand on them.
