What do I need to know to make my own indie cartoon from scratch?

I don't know how to animate and my drawings are rage comics tier, what should I learn?
First how to draw and then how to animate?

I'm tired of seeing shitty creators making slop, I want to make my own show, but I'm just a layman rn
>>

Learn to draw, yes. Don't be afraid to narrow your learning focus based on the style of cartoon you want to make (anime, toony, etc.) - you want to make sure you stay interested in your learning, and figure drawing, while massively helpful, can be overwhelming and feel tedious.
>>
>>153806350
thx, I've tried learning using the Loomis method, but that was a very long time ago, I don't think I remember much. Do you have any opinion on it?

Just FYI here is how the Digital Circus was made.

Gooseworx got fired from McDonald's for showing up to work late and drunk all the time.
Then he/she started making music on various websites and publishing her/his music everywhere.
Then they started collaborating and working with other people to make funny videos and songs together. Then GLITCH studios liked some of their shit and hired her/him to make a series on their new platform.
Gooseworx recommended 3 cartoons that are all 2d but then GLITCH declined all 3 requests saying 2d animation costs too much for their current shitty budget and to recommend something 3d instead so they can do it in blender or whatever for less money. Then Gooseworx recommended the Digital Circus based on her dreams and her inner demons. She voiced bubble and her friend voiced Jax. Episode 4 is based on when she used to come to mcdonalds drunk, lol.

Animation is the most important. You can get by with shitty or simplistic visuals if your senses of comedy via writing and animation are sufficient.

Step 1 is deciding if you want the video essay audience or the youtube kids content farm audience
>>

What about neither?

That's the monkey wrench audience

That was the first thing I learned: I admitted I was a beginner, I came seeking advice.

Attaching a recent drawing of mine, done with mouse. It will be my marker for improvement. Remember me /co/, in ~3 years I'll come back with something finished and you'll know I started here!

Surely you've got a better vocabulary to express your thoughts on the modern indie animation scene
>>
>>153806267
You don't need to know anything. You just need the right connections.

Everyone who ever made slop thought this exact same thing and went on to make some lousy derivative slop themselves. Do you really think you're any different?

note taken.

I don't want to make bajillions, I just want to make something.

I believe I can do it precisely because my projects aren't tainted by politics. But if you have any thoughts on how to avoid falling into that trap, please share them; it's useful not only for me, but for any aspiring creator following this thread.

From this, learn to network. It's way more important than anything else.

Biggest mistake is believing you can do it all, nobody does that.
>>
>>153813473
I don't even have any friends irl. I work online, and the most I do is talk to clients "technically." If networking is similar to prospecting, I can handle that. But if it involves socializing, I have no idea.

Here's a hot take,
Use ai, ai images, ai video, ai art, ai music, ai writing, ai ideas, ai brainstorming, ai storyboard.
All ai.
>but ai sucks
No it doesn't, you are just using it wrong.
Ai was not great 2 or 4 years ago.
But it's not 3 year ago.
It's 2026.

It's funny, if you ask ai to give ideas on end of amazing digital circus, almost all of it is better then what we got.

And you can just ask the ai for more, give 10,000 words to describe what happens = done.

The main reason people are made is cause companies waist money on junk, and the writers and artists probably get small money.
Only people at top get money.

So the trick is, becomming the person at top.
What does glitch do?
They hire 10/h (or zero $ ai) to do websites selling merch.
THAT'S IT, nothing else

We could do that too. Why do companies trust them?
Cause they already tried a few big people and projects to trust them.

Vivzie is maybe another example how to do things, but she only made like 2 things, that came and went.

Glitch is the goal and future right now.
What you need is a glitch competitor company.
Names for that company? (ask ai) Or you could ask co.

I posted this in another thread but KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

Have you written a story yet? If you can't draw then your script will be your blueprint. What kind of story were you thinking of writing about? That might help us narrow your focus down. The needs of a comedy slice-of-life are very different from an action fantasy.
>>
>>153813618
>using AI to write/braindstorm/etc
damn that's nasty, but it makes sense.

>So the trick is, becomming the person at top.
I need initial capital for that, and it might be too risky. I'd rather have the know-how before trying my hand at capitalism.

>>153813799
>Have you written a story yet?
Yeah, several.
>What kind of story were you thinking of writing about?
Adventure comedy, weird fiction and road story, mainly.

Nice. I think if you know you're not good at drawing, I recommend leaning into it, make it an aesthetic. Shows like 12 Oz. Mouse do that. There are so many unique styles of animation besides the same shit you see on Adult Swim. You could represent bad ideas with crayon scribbles and dirt with coffee grounds. (The sound design will do a lot of the heavy lifting, too.)

Here are some shorts to get your imagination going:

>A Colour Box, Len Lye (1935)
https://youtu.be/fOEqTwwkB3Y?si=W92QJ1FLfnYQoH9c
>Neighbors - Norman McLaren (1952)

>Conflict - Garri Barden (1983)

>>153806267
Bub. You're not even thinking about what kind of story you want to tell.
>>
>>153813983
Thank you so much, I'll save this thread and remember it throughout the journey.
>>153814008
Actually, I already have a story "ready," I won't discuss it here, because if everything goes well, you'll see it come to fruition!
>>
>>153813618
Are successful ai products in the room with us?
>>
>>153814070
There's a couple mistakes i made in that typing.

I could ask ai to write it. But I honestly wrote it.
>>
>>153814088
I will rewrite (with no ai still)

Here's a hot take,
Use ai, ai images, ai video, ai art, ai music, ai writing, ai ideas, ai brainstorming, ai storyboard.
All ai.

Kids farm is easier to monetize. Just throw some anime girl with big boobs in the thumbnail and get millions of views.
>>
>>153814137
Where are the successful AI shows or even pilots? If there aren't any, better recommend methods that work instead.
>>
>>153814088
Ignore shitstain over here >>153814137, the fun part of making art is actually making it, when you write YOU decide what you want to see, YOU decide what your leads talk like, it's YOUR experience, uncompromised by anybody, man or machine
>>
You could just hire a sweatshop in Asia
>>
>>153814599
Why? You can do taht stuff all by yourself
>>
>>153806267
>I don't know how to animate and my drawings are rage comics tier, what should I learn?
How to write and web comic and how to draw. And I don't mean you should start making a comic once you're "good enough", I mean you should start making one right now, with your current skills (you should improve your art along the way). Writing is a lot more important than art or animation. If your storytelling is engaging, it will be good even if your animation or art is janky.
