They were to become an obvious but not directly stated romantic pair until the end of the arc (not sure if it went the whole season or just a two or three episode deal) where he'd get sent back to his time. The execs thought it would have been creepy as fuck to have him go back to the past, having feelings for Wilykit when she's more obviously an adolescent. Most people don't realize how young Lion-O is in that version.
