Its (story)time for Victory

Had heard about the series on /co/ a bunch of times, but I never saw it storytimed.
Victory debuted in 2003, the same year when Invincible first came out. Although it was written as a fantasy series, some elements of it made me wonder what could have happened had this story remained at Image. This series is not listed on any record of Image Comics publications - you won't find it on their website, and its not on wikipedia.

There's a more interesting lore behind this series, but I'll save it for after the storytime.

Its the same comic, yes. In fact the original Brazilian version is also uncensored, but from what I've seen it was mostly just bare nipples.
Like I said there's more interesting lore which I'll save for later, but it's basically related to the Brazillian RPG and /tg/ behind this series. (I'm curious if you're familiar with that)

I actually used to own a poster of this, which I put up in my dorm room.

I read the entire thing. And it wasn't very good. From what I remember, it's about a tabletop RPG character coming to life. A lot of these Amerimanga comics just didn't have very good stories.

>And it wasn't very good
True, though I do think Series 1 was better than Series 2.

>A lot of these Amerimanga comics just didn't have very good stories.
Its a bit more complicated in Victory's case because its not an actual Amerimanga. Well, it is 'American' if you count Brazil as part of America, but you know what I mean
Like I said, I'll keep the lore to after the storytime.
>>
>>153828341
It's fascinating, it's like a weird mishmash of Slayers, western comic art, "how to draw manga" art, and Frank Frazetta sword and sorcery art and I'm not sure if those all were intentional or just the inspirations behind the inspirations coming through. That man on the rights shit is absolutely fucked though, and I hate how the west tried to draw chibis back then, they can't into moe for shit.

Well like I said, nipple slips. I actually read a research paper about the /tg/ scene in Brazil, and some scans of the original Brazilian Victory were shown,. It showed Victory with the nipples out, whereas the Image comcis variant censored or smoothed them over.
There could be more censorship, but I'll trust the Brazilian readers to point it out

Considering the backstory of the comic, I'd say its very intentional. Well, moreso two out of four of the inspirations you mentioned, the other two could have been the result of trying to make this story 'work' for the American market.
Again, its why the backstory is more interesting to me, and I'll save that for after the storytime

In Holy Avenger they are looking for maguffings called Virtue Rubys (sorry is late and my english is falling me)...the rubys where part of the armor of a Hero called THE PALADIN, every ruby wake up ang give the Paladin more power.

Victory is hinted to be a semi-god daughter of Paladin, or from his Villian "Master Arsenal".

Original Tormenta (1999) was just a scenario for AD&D, GURPS and 3D&T (a free Brazillian sistem), than 3D&D

Tormenta (2010) just a new D20 system, but really close to D&D 3e

Tormenta20 (2020) is closer to Pathfinder2 than D&D, you got new powers every level, but your attacks and saves are skills.
They also have a HP,MP points that you use to active your powers.

Holy Avenger was our longest running ACTION comic.
We got longer series of comical kids comics like "Monica's Gang" or the Original Disney's "Zé Carioca".

Brazillian comics market really suck, because everyone in the top just put down everyone so it dosent loose his spot.
like Cassaro from Holy Avengers, and Victory, he did became the Editor-Chief o the biggest studio, but dont use his power to help anyone (after years of complay that indy comics dont get good spaces)

Thank you brother. It's always nice to see more BR content here on /co/.

I was aware of Victory back in the day, but for some reason I never got into it, despite all the ads it had in the old Dragão Brazil (our largest RPG magazine back in the 90's til late 2000's)... I did read a lot of Holy Avenger, though.

Others I was always curious about was Lua dos Dragões and anything about the Metallians, but alas, I also never got to read any of it.

I meant inspiration-wise but given this was done by Brazilians which later got released by Image, I doubt that and any similarities was out of "convergent evolution" especially since America was late to the party when it come to anime and manga compared to other countries

Ehhhh bookstores used to kinda double as comic stores. I think a bigger problem now is some distribution policies from publishers, and magazine stands sorta dying out on the magazine market side.
The truth is, back around the time Victory came out, the author of another comic clarified that there -isn't- much of a market for BR comics, we just don't buy them all that much aside from Monica. Holy Avenger was a bit of an outlier.

Also nowadays there are some comic stores, as the whole "geek" thing became mainstream. The Panini publisher, for instance, has its own stores, at least in major capitals. I'm not sure how the BR RPG market is doing, as I don't see any more periodicals.

Hey I back and making Lunch, so more trivia!
One another BR anon, talk about our bookstores, but no... there always comics at bookstores but is more things rare, grafic novels, not montly...also kids dont random enter bookstores.

We have in Brazil a kinda bookstore called "Sebos" that sell secondhand book, and we find lots and lots of comics there.

But as i was sayng, when they make a comic they have to "guess" how many comic they have to make...than they put on the newstands, what dont sell they take back and send to other cities.
When Panini enter Brazil market, they do a thing we called "axis of evil", where they would put the Marvel and DC comics only in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, than what didnt sell it would be send to Rio Grande do Sul, Bahia and Minas Gerais (and I'm talking about capitals, a friend of my in a contrie city say they almost never send the comics there).

Indy comics where always local for that city, our if you could you order they by mail.

When the nerd boom happend some decade ago, the new stories normally just sell memobilia, funko pops and card games (comics where rare).

for all this logistic trouble, comics in brazil are more more comics with close stories (where you dont need find the previous issue).

>BUT there is manga!
The otaku scene was strong in brazil, but they take all market because it was a less quality paper, no colors, and a bunch of issues on one brazillian issue (it was common the brazilian version catch in no time with the japonese because we put more issues on one manga).

I see some people talking about the collors of the second Victory, it's a problem because the first Victory in brazil was in a premiun plastic paper where the color get really good and in a metalic tone.
the second season was in a smaller size comic with normal paper (where the colors get a mono tone).

That's a good start to explain what I called problems with distribution policies. There's also something a few publishers like JBC started doing, in which they're no longer sending stuff that stores and stands can return. Those have to buy the comics/manga online, and they have to buy specific titles as well in addition to what they want, apparently - similar to how Marvel had been trying to push some of their shittier titles in u.s. comic stores.

>The otaku scene was strong in brazil, but they take all market because it was a less quality paper, no colors, and a bunch of issues on one brazillian issue (it was common the brazilian version catch in no time with the japonese because we put more issues on one manga).
Nnnno. You got that mixed. Like 20 years back, they'd publish like half of one third of a tankobon every issue, and it's often already finished series, unless it's some hot new stuff or just eternal bullshit like One Piece, or Saint Seiya newer stuff that goes on a snail's pace.
Also the cheap, low quality paper days were like 20 years back. You could keep up with a few manga with an allowance. These days, you gotta be really loaded or sell your body to follow like, 3 monthly series, they're mostly in prestige tankobon format. Either the japs are overseeing the publishing closely or it's just the publishers squeezing every cent out of those geek suckers.

It's worth noting that Panini started publishing some sorta indie brazilian comics and distributing more (at least in the "axis of evil" way), but those may be just from artists that work with them more closely.
>>
>>153838828
yeah yeah i was talking more or less about 15-20 years ago for theother anon put in context with Victory.

Myselplf, i stop buying montlhy books when panini change the Universo Marvel to 16 reais.

but s I was saying, it in the time of Victory, there plenty problems in brazil comics market (and Cassaro and friends) that I left out until we reach today that is just a elitist market.

But we can still find TEX and other italian comics in newstands at good prices.
>>
>>153839230
Oh okay putting it in the context from back in the day yeah, makes total sense. In my city there's a chain of bookstores that was well known for doubling as the comic book stores (they also pulled bullshit to monopolize the scene, back then, when other stores tried to enter that specific market), but I don't know how it went in other places. The local comics market was almost nonexistant, but stuff like Holy Avenger and Victory managed to get an audience through the power of good ol' fanservice.

>But we can still find TEX and other italian comics in newstands at good prices.
Crazy how this stuff seems to manage to survive, no matter what. Maybe keeping the prices friendly is the secret after all.
