Its (story)time for Victory
Had heard about the series on /co/ a bunch of times, but I never saw it storytimed. Victory debuted in 2003, the same year when Invincible first came out. Although it was written as a fantasy series, some elements of it made me wonder what could have happened had this story remained at Image. This series is not listed on any record of Image Comics publications - you won't find it on their website, and its not on wikipedia. There's a more interesting lore behind this series, but I'll save it for after the storytime.
Go Brazil!!!!
This comic was published in Brazil too before Image but I'm not sure if this is a reboot or if this is that comic translated
>>153828569Its the same comic, yes. In fact the original Brazilian version is also uncensored, but from what I've seen it was mostly just bare nipples.Like I said there's more interesting lore which I'll save for later, but it's basically related to the Brazillian RPG and /tg/ behind this series. (I'm curious if you're familiar with that)
Some foreshadowing of Series 2 here

>>153828404>those chibisDamn it's like unearthing an OEL manga fossil from the 90s.
>>153828951Well in this case its an OPL manga. Or rather, an OBPL manga. But I wonder if that was why Image picked it up.
>>153828337I actually used to own a poster of this, which I put up in my dorm room. I read the entire thing. And it wasn't very good. From what I remember, it's about a tabletop RPG character coming to life. A lot of these Amerimanga comics just didn't have very good stories.
>>153828609I have the Brazillian comic, what was censored here?
>>153829076>And it wasn't very goodTrue, though I do think Series 1 was better than Series 2.>A lot of these Amerimanga comics just didn't have very good stories. Its a bit more complicated in Victory's case because its not an actual Amerimanga. Well, it is 'American' if you count Brazil as part of America, but you know what I meanLike I said, I'll keep the lore to after the storytime.
>>153828341It's fascinating, it's like a weird mishmash of Slayers, western comic art, "how to draw manga" art, and Frank Frazetta sword and sorcery art and I'm not sure if those all were intentional or just the inspirations behind the inspirations coming through. That man on the rights shit is absolutely fucked though, and I hate how the west tried to draw chibis back then, they can't into moe for shit.
>>153829128Well like I said, nipple slips. I actually read a research paper about the /tg/ scene in Brazil, and some scans of the original Brazilian Victory were shown,. It showed Victory with the nipples out, whereas the Image comcis variant censored or smoothed them over. There could be more censorship, but I'll trust the Brazilian readers to point it out
>>153828609No, I didn't realize there was an RPG too, that's interesting
>>153829162Considering the backstory of the comic, I'd say its very intentional. Well, moreso two out of four of the inspirations you mentioned, the other two could have been the result of trying to make this story 'work' for the American market.Again, its why the backstory is more interesting to me, and I'll save that for after the storytime>>153829259Tormentahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tormenta
>>153829185hehe i was there, i have the original because i was a Teen and get it, it was a small group they have a RPG magazine, than laucha long comic called Holy Avenger than they try victory...but is really hard lauch comics in Brasil (as there is no comic shop, they have to make a bunch and send to Newstands everywere).the nipple slips are more the siluette of the nipple like here:https://files.catbox.moe/r64bvm.jpgthey never can put the "areola", is more a sugested nuditty.you can see on this page here:>>153828580the same situation, but with a shirt on.
>>153829259>>153829294The 2010 version of the Tormenta RPG is better than the current one.the current has good ideias, but the power scalling and the balacing is the worst.
>>153829339I'm actually curious about the relationship between Holy Avenger and Victory. From what I see, a lot of the names and lore of Holy Avenger can be found in Victory, but I'm not sure if its the same universe or a different take on the same concepts.
>>153829394Weird question but, is the current Tormenta like 4e and 5e?
>>153829410In Holy Avenger they are looking for maguffings called Virtue Rubys (sorry is late and my english is falling me)...the rubys where part of the armor of a Hero called THE PALADIN, every ruby wake up ang give the Paladin more power.Victory is hinted to be a semi-god daughter of Paladin, or from his Villian "Master Arsenal".
End of #2
Start of #3
>>153829478I always wanted to read Holy Avenger. To my understanding its the longest running Brazilian comic, and it was a d&d type high fantasy series. I've seen an English uploaded of the first issue but I don't see the full series uploaded in English anywhere.(There's also a game but it seems to be abandoned)
>>153829435Original Tormenta (1999) was just a scenario for AD&D, GURPS and 3D&T (a free Brazillian sistem), than 3D&DTormenta (2010) just a new D20 system, but really close to D&D 3eTormenta20 (2020) is closer to Pathfinder2 than D&D, you got new powers every level, but your attacks and saves are skills. They also have a HP,MP points that you use to active your powers.
>>153829523Holy Avenger was our longest running ACTION comic. We got longer series of comical kids comics like "Monica's Gang" or the Original Disney's "Zé Carioca".Brazillian comics market really suck, because everyone in the top just put down everyone so it dosent loose his spot.like Cassaro from Holy Avengers, and Victory, he did became the Editor-Chief o the biggest studio, but dont use his power to help anyone (after years of complay that indy comics dont get good spaces)
>>153829639I'm curious as to how and why Cassaro approached Image to pick up Victory. I assume that the rights eventually ran out after a while, which is why its no longer under Image.(Personal opinion, but I do think Holy Avenger should have been published under Image instead)
>>153829681there is a lot of Brazillian Artists at the time working or knowing american artists, maybe someone made the connection. As I remember Image normally just do the publication and dont own all the comics they publish.I look for you where find scans of Holy Avengers but in portuguese here.
>>153829734Much appreciated man. I also hope that Holy Avenger will be fully translated someday
>>153829778here, go to internet archive, and search (NOT IN THE WAYBACK MACHINE) for "colecaoholyavenger"you will get 2 rpg books, than the whole #42 issues, and the mini-series of other group of heros on the universe.Hope you find someone to translate the comics o/
>>153828580>>153828609Violator?
End of #3
Start of #4, last issue of the 2003 series
>>153829523>There's also a game but it seems to be abandonedThere was two beat ups that sucked (one was not finished, the other was a kickstarter scam)the game "Reverie Knights Tactics" is in the Tormenta Universe (it's....mid).Tormenta also got antoer comic called "dungeon crawler" in Brasil.and some lost stories on some anthologies comics.
>>153828337Oh damn I used to beat off to the solicits for this book in Previews. Thanks for the nostalgiaboner OP
>>153828337Thank you brother. It's always nice to see more BR content here on /co/.I was aware of Victory back in the day, but for some reason I never got into it, despite all the ads it had in the old Dragão Brazil (our largest RPG magazine back in the 90's til late 2000's)... I did read a lot of Holy Avenger, though.Others I was always curious about was Lua dos Dragões and anything about the Metallians, but alas, I also never got to read any of it.
>>153829995I also have Predakonn XD (it sucks), never got Lua dos DragõesCassaro was a big furry before it became a thing.
BEEG
>>153829162Battle Chasers? It was really popular despite being sporadic and never even finishing its first arc and has been cited as an influence defining the "western anime" look that wasn't stuff like Antarctic Press
>>153830130Funnily, I was thinking of Battle Chasers when I was trying to remember Victory lately. Battle Chasers is by a different team, but the aesthetic felt kinda similar
>>153828366Man, feels like I'm always seeing my man Violator in places I don't expect to.
>>153830147>Battle Chasers is by a different team, but the aesthetic felt kinda similarI meant inspiration-wise but given this was done by Brazilians which later got released by Image, I doubt that and any similarities was out of "convergent evolution" especially since America was late to the party when it come to anime and manga compared to other countries
>>153830050>Cassaro was a big furry before it became a thingRIGHT? I always thought so, lmao.
I wonder how powerful Victory scales against some other Image characters
>>153830315Her RPG file give her "haft" of the atributes infinity.Gods have all atributes in Infinity, she half haft normal half Infinity
And thus ends the first series, published in 2003.2004 series storytime will start after a short break
>>153830385well goodnight anons! If the thread is alive tomrrow I will be back with more old Brazillian trivia XD
>>153830399Looking forward to it. I'll try to keep it alive with the occassional bump
>>153828770booba
Start of the 2004 seriesThe 2004 series expands on the lore of the 2003 series. But its also shorter and a weaker story-wise. It also kinda sucks that it ends on a cliffhanger
Brief recap of the 2003 series
NGL I thought this was a Battle Chaser's spinoff and now I'm kinda disapointed
End of #1 (or #5, if you count the very start)
Not to put you down, but damn I'll always be sad about how my country just can't do adventurous sci-fi/fantasy right.
What the hell happened to the colouring of the 2004 series??!!
>>153831000You talking about Brazil or the States?
>>153831027brazil
Another recap
ENTERELROPHIN
>>153831047Well, the other Brazilian anon mentioned how there isn't comic stores in Brazil and most comics are sold at newsstands. I think that would be a difficult market to do Brazilian comics.
>>153828337God I love girl butts.
End of #2 of the 2004 series
This is actually a very short issue - I was surprised to see pages from unrelated works while reading the comic. For the sake of storytime, they've been removed.
Alt cover
(Abrupt) end of #3Next issue! The Last issue of Victory!!We'll take a short break before I post it, so stay tuned!
Not gunna lie, something feels off about the second series
Thanks. I have a few issues of this actually. Got them from a dollar bin years back
And so this is it. The End of Victory.Start of #4 (and #8 overall)Also I really liked this cover. The Roger Cruz cover for #1 is still the best, but this feel like a decent second place
Another recap, for old times sake
>I hate you>And I love you
>"Hey kid. Wanna /ss/?"
Oh... but what's this?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1kNmgaIY7MAnd so ends the 2004 series. And with that, that's all there is to Victory (so far).
....that's it?
Thank you very much for the storytime!
>>153831103Ehhhh bookstores used to kinda double as comic stores. I think a bigger problem now is some distribution policies from publishers, and magazine stands sorta dying out on the magazine market side. The truth is, back around the time Victory came out, the author of another comic clarified that there -isn't- much of a market for BR comics, we just don't buy them all that much aside from Monica. Holy Avenger was a bit of an outlier. Also nowadays there are some comic stores, as the whole "geek" thing became mainstream. The Panini publisher, for instance, has its own stores, at least in major capitals. I'm not sure how the BR RPG market is doing, as I don't see any more periodicals.
>>153829128From the thumbnail I thought they had given Victory some yellow spandex lol >>153828337
Well one thing I will say for the art is that while the way the artist tries to mimic the anime artstyle is very hit or miss, I appreciate a lot of the colouring work. These palettes are very pleasing to the eye.
>>153828536Black hair a cute
>>153828672If only the druid had lived to see the return to grace of ttrpg
>>153828341>This series is not listed on any record of Image Comics publications - you won't find it on their website, and its not on wikipedia.Image's website only has books that are still in print or were released within the last two decades IIRC
>>153829020>But I wonder if that was why Image picked it up.Post-Crash era Image was the publisher picking up whatever they can to see what would stickValentino was leading publishing and he was all for comics to be more varied
>>153833303Whats this doozy about?
>>153833221I can agree on that for the first series, but the second series feels like an eyesore. I wonder if they changed colourist.
>>153833303Thats incredibly moe looking
>>153833258If only we do
>>153832492What were you expecting?
>>153833641Quite possibly
>>153830399Hoping you'll come by later. I'll try to keep the thread alive with some additional content>>153833303Makes sense. Issue 3 of the 2004 series came with a bunch of teasers, and the final issue had its own teaser. I might as well post those, and see if those went anywhere.First up. Fiefdoms. Google search turns up nothing, so far. Also, no mention on other sites, so far.
Made a mistake. This one came before the previous page
And that's fiefdoms.
The second teaser that was in #3 - Angel Sight.Only lead I have on this is scans posted to this deviantart: https://www.deviantart.com/sandoval-art/gallery
Oh sorry. It turns out Issue 3 had THREE teasers. The previous comic was actually something called Breathe.THIS, is Angel Sight.
And that's Angel Sight.
Last teaser, and this one was posted on Issue#4 after Victory ends.Brijes.And this one, has leads (I think). It had a wholeass movie! - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardians_of_the_Lost_Code(I think its related. Maybe)
And thats the end of the Brijes teaser.~If there's space later, and if I have time, I might try to upload the first few pages of Holy Avenger. Holy Avenger not got fully translated no licensed outside Brazil, so Victory would be the only content adjacent to it that reached an American audience.
>>153836427>Hoping you'll come by later. I'll try to keep the thread alive with some additional contentHey I back and making Lunch, so more trivia! One another BR anon, talk about our bookstores, but no... there always comics at bookstores but is more things rare, grafic novels, not montly...also kids dont random enter bookstores. We have in Brazil a kinda bookstore called "Sebos" that sell secondhand book, and we find lots and lots of comics there. But as i was sayng, when they make a comic they have to "guess" how many comic they have to make...than they put on the newstands, what dont sell they take back and send to other cities. When Panini enter Brazil market, they do a thing we called "axis of evil", where they would put the Marvel and DC comics only in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, than what didnt sell it would be send to Rio Grande do Sul, Bahia and Minas Gerais (and I'm talking about capitals, a friend of my in a contrie city say they almost never send the comics there).Indy comics where always local for that city, our if you could you order they by mail. When the nerd boom happend some decade ago, the new stories normally just sell memobilia, funko pops and card games (comics where rare).for all this logistic trouble, comics in brazil are more more comics with close stories (where you dont need find the previous issue).>BUT there is manga! The otaku scene was strong in brazil, but they take all market because it was a less quality paper, no colors, and a bunch of issues on one brazillian issue (it was common the brazilian version catch in no time with the japonese because we put more issues on one manga).I see some people talking about the collors of the second Victory, it's a problem because the first Victory in brazil was in a premiun plastic paper where the color get really good and in a metalic tone.the second season was in a smaller size comic with normal paper (where the colors get a mono tone).
>>153828390Fucking hell, she's just Gully. How did Image print this? When did Wildstorm and Cliffhanger leave Image
>>153838350>GullyLiterally WHO
>>153838350Gully from Battle Chasers printed by Image two years earlier.
>>153837476>When Panini enter Brazil market, they do a thing we called "axis of evil", where they would put the Marvel and DC comics only in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, than what didnt sell it would be send to Rio Grande do Sul, Bahia and Minas GeraisThat's a good start to explain what I called problems with distribution policies. There's also something a few publishers like JBC started doing, in which they're no longer sending stuff that stores and stands can return. Those have to buy the comics/manga online, and they have to buy specific titles as well in addition to what they want, apparently - similar to how Marvel had been trying to push some of their shittier titles in u.s. comic stores.>The otaku scene was strong in brazil, but they take all market because it was a less quality paper, no colors, and a bunch of issues on one brazillian issue (it was common the brazilian version catch in no time with the japonese because we put more issues on one manga).Nnnno. You got that mixed. Like 20 years back, they'd publish like half of one third of a tankobon every issue, and it's often already finished series, unless it's some hot new stuff or just eternal bullshit like One Piece, or Saint Seiya newer stuff that goes on a snail's pace. Also the cheap, low quality paper days were like 20 years back. You could keep up with a few manga with an allowance. These days, you gotta be really loaded or sell your body to follow like, 3 monthly series, they're mostly in prestige tankobon format. Either the japs are overseeing the publishing closely or it's just the publishers squeezing every cent out of those geek suckers. It's worth noting that Panini started publishing some sorta indie brazilian comics and distributing more (at least in the "axis of evil" way), but those may be just from artists that work with them more closely.
>>153838828yeah yeah i was talking more or less about 15-20 years ago for theother anon put in context with Victory.Myselplf, i stop buying montlhy books when panini change the Universo Marvel to 16 reais.but s I was saying, it in the time of Victory, there plenty problems in brazil comics market (and Cassaro and friends) that I left out until we reach today that is just a elitist market. But we can still find TEX and other italian comics in newstands at good prices.
>>153839230Oh okay putting it in the context from back in the day yeah, makes total sense. In my city there's a chain of bookstores that was well known for doubling as the comic book stores (they also pulled bullshit to monopolize the scene, back then, when other stores tried to enter that specific market), but I don't know how it went in other places. The local comics market was almost nonexistant, but stuff like Holy Avenger and Victory managed to get an audience through the power of good ol' fanservice.>But we can still find TEX and other italian comics in newstands at good prices.Crazy how this stuff seems to manage to survive, no matter what. Maybe keeping the prices friendly is the secret after all.
>>153828337god I miss this era
>>153840959I understand liking the aesthetic but the actual good wannabe manga can be counted on 1 hand
>>153837476>the new stories normally just sell memobilia, funko pops and card gamesIt's kinda insane. I'd go check the video game store in the local mall and at least a third of it would be nothing but plushies and figurines. One had a whole basket filled with Yoshi plushies but almost no Nintendo consoles or games lmao
>>153841137You want actual gaming stuff, you gotta hit the flea market.
>>153841272Eh, all I owned back in the day was pirated stuff, and when we got in a better financial position I just went for Steam instead.
>>153841362Well I meant controllers, too.Personally I'm still on the PS2 and earlier eras, so that also goes for memory cards and (fingers crossed) famiclone carts and stuff, too.
>>153840979>actual good wannabe manga can be counted on 1 handAs far as I'm concerned it begins with Adam and ends with Warren
>>153841137Sadly, video games is a market that destroy itself.Comic too, but the comicshops did protest agaisnt it, the big two that didnt cared.
>>153843214And movies, and tabletop games, and...
>>153840959It sure feels like a simpler more innocent time though I still cringe somewhat at these chibi gags.
bump
>>153842590I wouldn't exactly call Adam Warren wannabe manga. He's a weeb, yes, but his style is very much /co/
Nice 18(17) year old protagonist
