A thread for webcomics of times long past.
>>153828384those were the days. I still toss a little l33t into my shit, just to reward anyone who remembers.Uh let's see, other ancient comics that aint dead yet...
8 years since any update.
>>153828652that's practically a baby in webcomic terms
>>153828384I used to wear the shirts they sold.
I still think about Kid Radd whenever a new "inside the video game world" concept like Gameoverse pops up.
>>153828384>Fred has a kid.>This kid is now a full legal adultJesus christ the passage of time is inevitable.
>>153828959I had a t-shirt with Gore's vampire emoticon from clanbob/Life of Riley that I used to wear regularly. In hindsight I'm probably lucky that nearly no one had any idea where it was from.
>>153828384I don’t remember many specifics, but megatokyo did that thing I hate where it started as fun comedy that turned into “super serious drama”. Never finished it.
>>153828384This series was so old, they had an early entry making fun of Naked Snake's mullet.Anyway here's my entry. Tsunami Channel. Use to love this shit back as a dumbass early teen like you wouldn't believe.
I HATE THE PASSAGE OF TIME!!!!!!
>>153829095I had no idea, the kid never comes up, only his wife and her poor health.>>153829028is that what gameoverse is?yeah when wreck-it ralph came out, I'm like "Kid Radd did it better" good LORD that was a good comic.Btw you no longer need to use a self-contained pocket browser to view it, there's a new archive site that renders it properly.
>>153829258yep. Largo was the soul of the comic, and when he left, it was no longer funny>>153829553Oooooooh this looks great. I might need to check-a this out. I only just discovered Dragon Mango
>>153829575you idiot. shoot TIME, not yourself.
still going
>>153830402right behind ya
>>153830402he's.. trans-species?
>>153830615It's Kevin and Kell. That'd be one of the lesser strange plot points in the comic.
>>153830402What the hell is the context for this? I stopped reading ages ago.
Webcomics with dead websites
>>153828618>>153828810>>153828907Simple times, simple ways, simple laughs, I had no idea how good things were.
>>153831301yeah we assumed things were getting better..finally here's this place to just say whatever you want, and it seems completely ungovernable.
Since storytime I've still been keeping up with EGS>>1538288108-bit Theater would be fun to dump tooI've got it all here...
>>153828810first time I ever saw a webcomic actually go back and change in its archives because time was changed
Any webcomics I'm missing?https://tiermaker.com/create/ancient-webcomic-tier-list-16109186
I should reread Erma's comic
>>153832931um excuse me, I don't see Ah, Peegee! in there. No but that looks pretty thorough. Y'know, for actually.. professionalish and well-known ones
>>153828384I bet no one knows this one
>>153832931Plufim comicsAussie, color, sort of a cross between megatokyo and EGS
Neko the Kitty, basically totally lost after SmackJeeves went down (that website also basically had the entire sprite comic community on it, RIP to that!)thankfully, the author finally archived all of the hundreds of strips on ComicFury.
>>153833430Holy fuck I completely forgot this existed
>>153833489i’m relieved people remember it at all! but i can’t be too surprised, it was usually front page on SJ along with Gloomverse and all the Pokemon stuff. now CF has all the Pokemon stuff on its front page! nice that some traditions are kept alive.
>>153833558Damn, CF even has the feel of old internet webcomic hosts. A lot of flat text, kind of unoptimized design, but all of the webcomics front and center on the front page. It's like I'm back in 2010.
>>153833558At least the spirit of SJ lives on
>>153833649they’re planning to overhaul the site soon, and that worries me, but hopefully we won’t lose too much of that magic
>>153832931Muertitos and WhirlGirl
>>153828384ngl you won’t believe how much of our current culture seems to be parroting ideas from sinfest(well, that or dobson)
I do wish Sluggy Freelance would end. Its been going on for so long that I feel it could have ended naturally much earlier.
>>153830763still my favorite shock page
>>153828652She's doing Yakuza yaoi comics on itch.io these days. This showed up eight days ago.
>>153831873El Goonish Shive is something I've been following since the Keenspot days. No regrets, because Dan's put in the work and skilled up. Gitted good? whatever. I want to recommend it but there is so much backstory it's asking for a huge commitment to 'catch-up'.
>>153834617It's still going? I stopped reading so long ago I just assumed it ended by now. I guess he's still doing it because it pays the bills. If that's the case, he probably can't stop.
>>153828384How many times do I have to day itWe don't talk about Megatokyo!
>>153834617I was there when it Sluggy Freelance started, right at the frisbee joke, but I fell off the wagon and I'm not sure if I lost it or it lost me. He changed his website, shit was broken with the comic page posted as multiple images and not every image would show up so it was impossible to read and... I never bothered to keep trying until he fixed his shit. and I didn't miss it.
>>153836241What a fall from grace
The granddaddy of sprite comics
>>153836316There was no twentieth-year anniversary comic, but you can see he's still improving.... twenty fucking years. jesus christ.
>>153836316>>153836519I learned a lot about myself and kinks through this comic
>>153834513This is what I think modern culture resembles the most
I miss guest strip culture
>>153829028Damn, that's a fucking name I haven't heard in a long ass time.
I miss Warrior U like you wouldn't believe.
I will never understand why they cancelled f@nboys
>>153829205>zomg what if PAINTBALLThat's honestly all I remember.
>>153836884>Unsounded had a guest strip(s) in the earlier days
>>153828384>80 posts>no loss You disappoint me /co/
I remember reading psyguy's stuff and others like Boxer Hockey on fireball20xl. It was mostly shit and Psyguy is a terrible writer, but it was my first exposure to fan content. I'm glad Hesse got out of there.
>>153836961Didn't it end after the artist's brother was brutally murdered?
>>153837150That's terrible¡
>>153828384>Octopus Pie is going to be 20 years old next yearDo we consider it one of the last webcomics of the 2000s or the earliest webcomic of the 2010s? Did you follow it from the first arc back in 2007?
>>153832931What do you consider ancient?
>>153833004Is Erma that old?
>>153837222I consider the the scott pilgrim movie as the line that separates the webcomic golden age from it downfall, most of their egos didn't survived that movie being popular
Maybe a bit of a controversial opinion but, while there are a lot of good webcomics mentioned itt, I find most of the 00s webcomics that are just anime/video games references galore a bit boring. They have their nostalgic value but at that point I might as well put on a good 00s movie/game/anime for something that feels both nostalgic and is higher quality.
>>153837572There's always penny arcade
>>153837572What were 10s webcomics like?
>>153828384is dominic deegan still a thing? i dropped it after sigfried died.
>>153837669
>>153837693Yes! I used to use Dominic Deegan as proof of "you can practice your craft for ten years and not significantly improve," but after dude ended it, took a long break, and started again I was all ready to point and laugh...... and dude levelled up. "The Legacy of Dominic Deegan" he's making now is really good.
>>153828384I never liked the "how to draw manga" art style
>>153837794No one does, is all some of the webcomic pioneers could draw
>>153837669>>153837713Tumblr influenced? Not even in a disparaging way, but the early to mid-2010s was the peak era for that site.
>>153837920Dresden Codek, used to be a good comic, the panels were creative and it made senseSlowly it transformed into the 2010's
>>153828384What was it like following IJQ and his friends back in the early webcomic days? How does it feel following his work now that he's still relevant but has left comics behind for cartoons in California?
>>153837974Let me guess everyone in the comic is now a faggot?
>>153838023The end

>>153838234the fuckers complaining about gooning over the gameoverse cat would have an aneurysm if they discovered 2010s webcomics
>>153837222>>153837449I think there's a division in the mid-2000s. Late 90s/early 2000s were the first wave, and then there's a new wave in the mid to late 2000s. First wave can be characterized by cartoonists either imitating manga or newspaper strip formats, lots of pop culture humor, and slice of life comedies that start to veer into longer storylines or full blown adventures. Second wave started to bring more unique, often whimsical spins in art and/or concept. Cartoonists like Meredith Gran, John Campbell, Evan Dahm, Kate Beaton, Anthony Clark, Hellman & Beran, were all pushing the boundaries a bit harder than many of their predecessors.
>>153838285For me it was the opposite, it wasn't sexy enough.
>>153834513>ngl you won’t believe how much of our current culture seems to be parroting ideas from sinfestour current culture is pretty nazi, isn't it
>>153836241No wonder she acts like such a faggot. And after I was customizing my epic sci-fi series to her sensibilities - no longer!>>153837974I liked when it got philosophical in its early days, before of course the trans clown ride era
>>153838457The earliest I remember following is pvponline>>153838680They had a very meta phase when they didn't knew if webcomics would have a future
well-of-souls.com / OutsiderOctober 2001 - ongoing , 232 pages so far.Technically not dead, but moving so slowly you'd think it's a statue
>>153840308Damn, I never knew or just forgot when it started.Anyway, here's one that used to be published, back when there was the brief overlap of the still existent small publishers and serialized webcomics. Still going and it looks like things might finally be happening.
>>153830402>>153830615>>153830827The guy is a coyote who got trapped in the rabbit warren years ago. He got a job as a hospital orderly and disguised himself with pheromones. In this world, scent is more important than sight. Then he fell in love with a female rabbit. In desperation, he picked a barroom fight with a bunch of toughs and (as he'd intended) got himself beaten to an unrecognizable pulp. This world has better health care plans than ours does. The hospital reconstructed him on the reasonable assumption he was a rabbit. He married the girl who, like most rabbits, is over-sexed. They have a hybrid kid; looks like a rabbit but has a carnivorous digestive system.
>>153831301Yeah... fuck how it all went down.
>>153833430ahh good ol Neko the Kitty. Lotta good bits in that.I still remember when the author got too tired to continue, and I offered to take over the art. I got two done, he only posted one.
>>153836316Got to give an anti-recommendation here. The art is good but the plot is not.
>>153840721Hot?
>>153837974>>153838680I never felt like there was anything to Dresden Codek beyond the slick art. Same with Sinfest. I can't say that I expected the artists to go down their respective rabbit holes, but it's also hard for me to really care. Sinfest in particular seems more interesting since it became a complete fever dream.
>>153841394Sinfest started as deep as it was gonna get it, started right in the deep philosophical age when everyone was allowed to talk about religion and morality and has simple abandoned it's zen 90's new age vibeDresden Codek had a ton of good ideas maybe stupidly complex that were decent but they simply abandoned them for lesbian sex and neon colored actionSequential art still exists
>>153841551I don't get it.
>>153836850basically
>>153837134loved psyguy's stuff, though some of it didn't hold up. my favorite was Urchin, and I was devastated when I finally found an archive that my sense of humor had kind of developed too much to laugh at most of it.>>153837572yeah exactly.the problem is, for a long time, it was just NOT DONE. Nobody referenced other pieces of entertainment media, so when people started doing it, it was amazing. and when you're busy being amazing, it's hard to remember to actually be good. Once that thing becomes normal...
>>153837669past 2012 they were increasingly sanitized>>153837794There are 5 or 6 different 'how to draw manga' art styles, including several legit pros, and a few western artist abominations (because you can't trademark 'how to draw manga' as a title, so there's no barrier of entry)This isn't one of them. at all.
>>153838285who, in turn, would lose their minds at 2000s webcomics>oh nooo, that full grown woman with big boobies who just saved the world and runs a cafe, she's FOURTEEN! how DARE you!
>>153840721I hate that this actually makes sense.>>153841551this is fascinating to me. these simple little triangle-and-circle guys are obviously basic as hell, yet Jackson knows how to tilt, twist, rotate, and modify them to get them to actually express. This has taken me my entire life to even notice, and I still can't draw it when I want to. 20 years ago I wouldn't have noticed if they were all just standing stock still straight up the entire time, like a sprite comic.
>>153838680>No wonder she acts like such a faggot. You are just jealous of her iron bull helmet.
Almost none of these have good art.
>>153841656They seem to be in the base of those black creatures called denizens and dealing with a Sadako style ghostSequential art is a fairly ancient unapologetic furry comic and I just find out the site still exists and the art is still being updated, always like the denizens so am gonna read this again and catch up
I miss Sirkowskis comics. The porn was one thing but Miss Dynamite was so much fun. The last issue is still unfinished. Last time I saw him active it was actually when he visited /co/; he's just bitching politics on twitter now.>>153828810These guys were doing Atomic Robo after this, but that one's not getting much updates either.>>153831945>first time I ever saw a webcomic actually go back and change in its archives because time was changedMy Life With Fel was damn near completely redrawn at some point, I think when they changed the website design.Perry Bible Fellowship had all comics uploaded in larger resolution and different transparent color.
>>153842021This was webcomic reality for like 20 years
>>153829848Time cannot be shot, nor can it be put in a bottle.
>>153841551I think of the Perry Bible Fellowship and A Lesson Is Learned But The Damage Is Irreversible as the best examples of graphic style combined with concepts and execution that actually works.
>>153841960I was always amazed by his denizen design and lore, this comic had great villains
>>153842062okay yeah plenty of people redo their comics, but here I meant, the characters traveled back in time to a previous comic, and now, in the archives, that comic is different. That blew my damn mind.>>153842177It's worth a try!
Dreamkeepers
>>153842262Sinfest has found an audience I don't know if dresden codek can get a relaunchIf anything am surprised how well sequential art hold up
>>153840831>The art is goodIts not bad but calling it anything other than serviceable is being way too generous, ever since Dan switched to 3D models for poses everything looks so stiff the dissonance between clean and smooth linework and robotic body language is really distracting if you're paying attention
>>153837713I still remember how the author tried to shit talk Wil Eisner as an overrated white guy and then when folks pointed out Eisner was Jewish they responded with "oh um er I'M CUBAN, YA KNOW"But now they're trans so all their previous posturing is forgiven I guess.
>>153842560reminds me of when Ghastly tried to come back and the 3d models really made everything awkward.
>>153842689>EISNER!? ... Happy Hanukkah.
>>153842719>>153842560It makes me feel like, unless you know what you're doing, 3d models would be better used for short animations instead
>>153828384>A thread for webcomics of times long past.how old does it need to be for this thread?
>>153838234>It Hurts!! - 2013 Apr (became Please Forgive Me!!!)>Please Forgive Me!!! - 2018 MarThis part is accurate.>Sandra & Woo - 2008 Oct (became Gaia)>Gaia - 2023 Apr (became The Adventurous Scarlet Carolus)This part is not. While they share an author, the stories are all unconnected, and gaia ran at the same time as sandra & woo
>>153838234>Order Of The Stick - 2003Still ongoing. Probably in part because of the guy's hand injury making updates slower.https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html
here's something really obscure i've posted before. It started in 2003, but rebooted in 2008:https://www.true-magic.com/view.php?id=1
>>153828384https://www.snarlbear.com/comic/chapter-one-coverstarted in 2012 and is complete. only would take you an hour or so to read. its good.
>>153836519I'd say the art has settled on a plateau, haven't noticed any major changes in the past few years>>153842042It's been a hot minute since I last saw anything from Jolly Jack, and I'm not sure I've ever seen something non-pornographic
>>153828384The real original Gameoverse.>>153842773It should start around early to mid 2000s
>>153828618First post is the best post. Such an amazing story and gags (eventually) put into literal megaman sprite rips.
>>153842773the real question is how popular and well known does it have to be for this thread.>>153842800I'd rather read something else by the sandra and woo artist, with a different (saner) author.>>153842844That is a bitchin way to start a comic. also that is cute, I love fluffy cuddly spiders like that.
>>153842755To be fair, I understand the awkwardness when you're willing to delve into another medium getting out of your comfort zone, growing pains are expected, but in the case of EGS that has been going on for so long that by now it has outlasted several presidents but most of the time it still looks like babys first time posing in blender
>>153843013You are missing on all the good shit
>>153842872it took me a lot more than an hour to read! But yes, it was worth it. Good as fuck, only a tiny bit of gay right at the end (as webcomics are almost legally obligated to do), really left me wanting more
>>153841984S'a good helmet.
The denizen origin story
>>153842689I remember feeling livid because the response was "he jewish" and not "HE'S WILL EISNER AND IS TEN TIMES THE ARTIST YOU TRY TO BE!" He even played with the format the same way literallywho was trying to in his. Except he mastered the basic firsts so you could follow his fucking speech bubbles.
Webcomics were always referencing each other
No update for ages.
>>153843463nnnneat
>>153843494the point is catching racist libs in their hypocrisy>>153843501damn, Dilbert's got.. hair-apets.
>>153828384i tried to show this comic to a girl once, cause she asked me what comics I read; and it happened to be on some ecchi page; so she thought I was trying to show her porno.
>>153838234I think OP didn't say, but personally I think 10 years should be the minimum..so started in 2016 at the latest (unless its a sequel to a comic or something). There's a lot of comics I like that are under 10 years old so i wont post them here.
>>153828810>>153831301i didnt find 8 bit theatre that funny.

I used to like this Webtoon called The Dragon Tutor that was popular on Webtoon when the site was first gaining popularity in America. It's about this dragon teacher that has to teach an elven princess and they go on magical journeys like finding his previous student and stopping trolls.https://www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/the-dragon-tutor/list?title_no=30258
>>153846625It's mostly just unconnected joke strips. The quality varies a lot, but some are classics. It hasn't updated in quite a while. The last comic, which was #109 seems to have came out in 2018 or so.
>>153846175oh that's right8bit theater just codified it as a DnD thing.>>153846253If there was logic to hatedom, it would be legit criticism instead.

>>153850590I'm still on chapter 4. I don't even see an archive page here, so I'm not sure how far along I am, I just know I wish so badly I'd known about this comic back in the day. I'd be its little brother, living in its shadow. favorite is probably still Mango.

>>153846717>>153846625Plasticbrickautomaton (formerly Legocomics) was great; if you remember those few comics about building an underwater hamster utopia, that's what the author has been doing in his free time. He has a youtube channel called Hampture.

>>153830402>>153835304I'm flabbergasted that this comic is published in places available to normies. I'm very exposed to weird things and I find this comic odd.

>>153857177In theory if you keep drawing you should get better at it
>>153838234Thanks for the list anon. I used to read a shitton of webcomics back in the 2000s when Keenspace, Keenspot, Comic Genesis and geocity/angelfire webrings were the way to find comics.
