A big failure on some of the audience's part is their unwillingness to absorb any information that didn't fit their theories, head canons or interpretations, or to consider that them consuming a canon that has sad or bittersweet elements to it that don't resolve on a happy note. I saw someone sincerely argue that it couldn't be SOMA because "that would be too sad" and they only think it's sad because they had been ignoring what Goose has said (because "GOOSE LIES") and all the hints up until then while refusing to engage with the idea that they might be wrong. I used to be on team TRON but then I read some theories, rewatched some parts and paid attention and realized that oh, this actually makes a lot more sense. And I wasn't fucking assblasted when I found out it was SOMA, because I didn't treat my watching this show as a sort of status symbol of how I only consume the "right" kind of media and I didn't get so invested in my theories to the point where I couldn't handle being wrong.
