how do you get homeboy out in 27 hours, /diy/? i think with more know-how they could have saved this retard.

>>
>>2764731
Wow, that's quite a job. How long was the guy missing, were you expecting to find a body?
>>
>>2764719
The spelunking videos are fun. Learning the Donald Cerone story is mostly bs and newb mistakes. Or narc issues with overzealous divers in massive spaces or tunnel systems. I'd think type A people are best for this sport.

Someone stupid enough to put themselves into that situation isn't worth saving.
>>
>>2764637
I don't understand how someone could wedge themselves in a tiny gap like this without their instincts screaming at them to stop.
>>
>>2764780
The cave had a known narrow passage called The Birth Canal which had a turn-around space at the end. He mistook another narrow passage that did not have a turn-around space, and I guess it was also more vertical so that once he was in he could not get out by himself and somehow the rescuers could not pull him out.
>>
>>2764637
>>2764708
>>2764769
>>2764780
The irony is this story brings out the retards.

He thought he was in a different part of the cave and it’s an easy mistake to make. It’s not like everything is clearly labeled. The area he thought he was on required you to push yourself through a very narrow gap. Hundreds of people had done it before. He made a simple mistake and payed dearly for it.

Of course people don’t like to believe that horrible shit can happen randomly in life so they like to blame victims.
>inb4 don’t go into a cave
I hope you assholes don’t drive. Two horrific accidents happened in my area twice in a years span.
>multiple deaths from dust storm over interstate: people burned to death in ensuing pile up
>anhydrous trailer overturned and was punctured by falling on another trailer sitting at the side of the road: several died including a father and two young children when they drove into the plume of ammonia
>>
>>2764637
Dissolve the victim in sodium hydroxide solution and pump the fluids back out.
>>
Spray in some teflon and he should just slip right out
>>
>>2764637
Break his fucking legs, what's he gonna do? Die?
>>
>>2764790
Cavetard equating squeezing yourself in a tight cave for fun with driving your car to get somewhere you need to go.
Is a low IQ needed to get into this or what?
>>
>>2764795
>every trip taken in a car is necessary and performed safely
Lmao

I guess you are willfully ignoring the part of my post that said hundreds of people went through the cave. The point you’re missing here is that if you drive, you have surely noticed an uptick in aggression and unsafe driving. Or maybe you haven’t because you’re one of the assholes making it more dangerous. People are constantly on their phones and not paying attention. You’re free to look up the rising rates of auto deaths. However people like you treat as something blasé and don’t view it as inherently dangerous, yet it is. And everyone just accepts it because it’s a normal part of life. It doesn’t have to be. The infrastructure in the US and the drivers in general are shit. It dosent have to be this way anymore than people have to go caving.

Is caving more dangerous than driving? For the average person, yes. But it isn’t the automatic death sentence you retards think it is while you dont give a second thought to how dangerous things you do everyday are. Maybe you think you go through life without any unnecessary risk. But you do, faggot.

And again, he would have been perfectly fine had he not a mistake in navigation. People do this all the time.
>>
>>2764832
>It dosent have to be this way anymore than people have to go caving
Oh does it? Do tell how I can get around without a car. Would like to hear it.
Look if you want to do your retarded little hobby of crawling in holes go nuts. But know that when it goes wrong (and it often does with under water cavers) everyone will call you retarded.
>>
>>2764637
Humans swim in water, right? Just flood the cave with water and he'll float out eventually.
>>
>>2764875
>Oh does it? Do tell how I can get around without a car. Would like to hear it.
Since you’re intentionally mischaracterizing my post, I’m not going to read any further in your blog post.

I’m sorry you can’t comprehend the idea of getting the fuck off your phone and allowing distance between you and the car in front of you. It’s quite a daunting concept, I know.

Well maybe you don’t but I bet you do as well as most of the other people who make uninformed comments about some poor kid dying in a hole.

No one wanted the responsibility/liability of breaking a man's legs and possibly killing him in the process anyway. There's more to this rescue than "if he stays, he's 100% dead so why not do whatever it takes to try and get him out?" because doing nothing means he's only guilty of killing himself.

Blame the greedy family which is in an instant financial crisis due to losing probably more than 50% of their income when he dies (maybe some life insurance but I bet they didn't pay out due to paragraph 128: no suicidal extreme sporting deaths allowed). Clawing at any opportunity to avoid perceived poverty within the laws of the land. Just be desperate to save the beloved husband and when it fails take the person attempting the rescue by breaking a pair of legs to court.

>>2765729
That's not necessarily true given the circumstance, at least it's infeasible without perfect tools. He pulled himself inside head first, which means the pressure on his joints are different as you work with your arms to get forward etc. Rescuers could do nothing but pull on his ankles, which requires enough force to drag his whole bodyweight back up. That means at the bend, where he can't bend his knees, will take all of the force upon them, probably breaking them.

We're not a big solid piece of wood.
>>
Moral of the e story
If you stick your head in the wrong hole it could be deadly
>>
>>2765763
>That means at the bend, where he can't bend his knees

Which makes it seem that OP's diagram can't be correct unless he did a lot of twisting and turning to get down there without breaking his knees. If the rescuers could have rotated his body (pretty impossible) then his knees could make it to the upper level, but then his hips are facing the wrong way. The diagram has to be way wrong.
>>
>>2765792
No it's probably correct. He wasn't pulled by his neck head first into it, he probably wiggled a ton and inched his way forward while holding his hands against the rock to release pressure from his legs as they passed the bend slowly. This can't simply be replicated when stuck upside down fighting gravity and possibly arms can't even move anymore. His feet would hit he ceiling and his knees goes against the bend, the rope around his ankles puts all of the pressure around his knees which is probably what risked breaking them if they simply pulled straight back.

He was also in a poor condition mentally so probably couldn't assist the rescuers in a good way.

also, I know they had a setup where they were pulling him out with a cable but the cable snapped and he fell back in, and then they just....gave up on that? they had made progress but suddenly decided nevermind we broke the only cable ever made.

They were having some success pulling him out with ropes attached to a metal pulley system screwed into the rock. But unfortunately one of them snapped out and bashed a rescuer directly in the face, cutting it open and giving him a concussion. This guy was the most skilled caver apparently, so with better screws and equipment it might have actually worked. Or just popped his legs off, we'll never know.

>Furthermore you could say he represents the adventurism of humanity, without which we'd have nothing.

Nah, that's just a bitch-ass excuse for lack of preparation, similar to calling a mentally ill methbitch a "free spirit" when they get raeped by a predator after going where they should not be. Nothing of the sort should ever be spontaneous or random or unplanned to the max.

For example borescopes are portable these days and I would most fucking certainly bring one if I had to do with industrial exploitation of caves or prospecting, the sole reasons to go into the earth being to extract delicious wealth.

He knew or should have that when you do absurdly risky entertainments (this was not new exploration, it was like tourists FAFOing on Everest than adding to the corpse count) that you should KNOW not guess where you are. Utterly methodical preparation is the difference between success and failure. Methodical preparation includes marking trail (above or below ground) and of course that cave should have been marked and posted (regardless of caver custom, treat everything like a military operation) by previous spelunkers.

He went by the Stockton Rush airhead model. Airheadism is despicable but at least the caver only killed himself.
>>
>>2774449
This reminds me of Aristotle's golden mean, where courage is the virtuous moderate position, while the extremes of recklessness and cowardice are the vices. Adventurism in service of a real goal is admirable, like astronauts conducting research in orbit or Columbus trying to find another route to India. Spelunking into confined spaces is done purely for thrills, there's no seriously plausible scenario it advances humanity. I'm not dancing the guy's grave, and I'm not advocating no one should ever take risks, but I also don't find his hobby particularly admirable.

It gives me heart palpitations thinking that he is still down there.

As for getting him out, I would have used a battery powered winch and a hammer drill. I don't know how good the battery tech was back then but if they had these tools then it would have been trivial opening up the hole and extracting him.

The beginner part is a lot bigger. He was trying to go through a different part of the cave system that is known to be more advanced.
Plus, most beginners don't see a 12" hole and think to themselves "yeah this is the way to go." But semi-experienced thrillseekers trying to find tight passages to squeeze into will try it.

anon is particularly unclear of the actual situation that got people dead
Chances are it was a dust storm and goddamn morons decide to drive full speed while not being able to see 2 meters in front of them. Suddenly out of nowhere there's a car or semi right in front of you, because others were thoughtful enough to slow down to a crawl to prevent anything serious. Only to be met by THAT guy that thinks it's best to go at it at the speed limit.

The dust storm itself is a minor inconvenience, the people around you are the biggest problem

Meanwhile caving is inherently more dangerous than anything else you do on a daily basis

A few years ago I was driving a truck through Kansas during a snow storm and was crossing through areas of total whiteout ~1m visibility. If the highway I was on had shoulders i would have just pulled over and stopped, but it did not so instead i slowed down to about 25mph in the hopes that If somebody was dumb enough to stop in the middle of the roadway, it would do minimal damage but also If some moron was sending it full speed ahead through these blind zones, hopefully moving forward would soften the blow. And of course, some idiot in another semi rear ended me at 55mph. People are dumb man.

It really isn't that dangerous if you aren't a retard. Caving is fun, and if you're a geology autist, there's a lot of really interesting stuff to see. I've done it for years and been on a lot of expeditions with a lot of different people, and I've never seen any close calls personally, despite navigating some pretty hellishly tight passages. When you know what you're doing, it's hard to Jones yourself.
He shouldn't have continued to push head first when he saw the passage sloped downward, he shouldn't have compressed his chest without knowing if there was an opening past the squeeze, and he shouldn't have gone down the Birth Canal in the first place.
