Cobras are good pliers, but they are not the best water pump pliers knipex makes, just the most expensive ones.
So if you see someone with cobras 9 out of 10 times it's because they saw some social media sojack promoting them.

+1

Got the father in-law one of these and the clip for the ratchet and little rubber flap for the driver handle broke off with moderate use pretty quickly which made the whole gimmick of a $90 compact ratchet set completely useless.

>>2846215
Anon sounds retarded, maybe he claims their dykes or cobolts are better but they’re totally different tools.

I still want to try the quick adjust Cobras because that’s the one feature or the Irwin knockoffs that is better than the original. I think they’re only in one size though.

This. I dunno why everyone spergs out about pliers so much... The knipex cobras are pretty good. Got myself some of the pliers wrenches and they are pretty good. Got some Malco eagle grips, they are nice. None of it is really as life altering as you all claim it is though...

Snap-on tools are nice. I have some. Not going to throw out all my other tools and replace everything that is working perfectly fine just because some name-faggot on a diy board said so though.

TLDR, anyone who shills stuff this hard and namefags is a do-nothing faggot.

The adjustment mechanism of the alligators is way better than the old school Channellock groove, but I don’t find the push button Cobras that much easier than the Alligators, especially if you’re a mil-boomer like me who grew up with channies.

The Irwin ratcheting is way faster than all of em tho.

The jaws are going to get worn on any channies with some use, and very much depends on what you’re grabbing. But people love the Knipex because the teeth hold up better than most.

Oh yeah. It's my go to for drilling and covers most use cases. Bonus is if I break one I honestly don't give a flying fuck. Into the trash it goes and I grab another one out. Zero fucks given.

If it is something that needs a precise hole of a specific size then then I grab a proper bit. I buy 1/8 and 1/4" cobalt bits in bulk for pilot drilling. For general fab, step bits get used quite often to open the holes up to final size.

It isn't nearly every day usage on them. We are talking 4-5 uses a week on them and they shit the bed in two years. Under 500 grabs of various nuts, bolts and pipes. Trash.

The Alligators have nowhere near the same level of wear and we have a couple of pairs that have nearly 10 years on them and still grip tighter than the Cobras. I suspect Knipex has made cost reductions in more recent times.

In aviation we use a very similar plier with those plastic inserts for connectors.

I mean tEcHnIcAlLy you could use Cobras/Alligators/Channelloks or whatever but then you tend to fuck up the connectors outside grooving.

Simply frowned upon.

HOWEVER if those damn plastic inserts could last longer than half a LEAP engine's worth of electrical harnesses I would be REALLY grateful.

>>
>>2847155
I hate to back him up but the Cat stuff actually is a pretty crazy deal, a lot of it is straight up Snap-On for a fraction of the price, like their screwdrivers are instantly recognizable as the classic Snap-On hard handles and a 6 piece set of the Cat branded ones is $56, while the Snap-On branded versions are $30+ EACH.
>>
>>2847177
Yea Williams is straight too. Go through your authorized Cat dealer and you can buy a couple select decent tools for non- rape van prices. People heard about this 5 minutes ago and sperg out like it’s the second coming of Jesus.

Or you can go on Amazon and buy Knipex or Klein or whatever for normal retail prices without the rape van pricing
>>
>>2847178
Pretty much what I've always done. I'm tempted by the screwdrivers though, I've always liked the old-school Snap-On shape and how easy they are to clean.

I don’t understand the snap on hate, snap-on makes the best slip joint general position plier and it’s only $30

>>
>>2846689

>>
>>2847191
The push button Knipex equivalent is $31 on Amazon. I'm not a Snap-On hater, I totally get the value of them if you work at a shop that gets a truck regularly, but they're a much worse proposition if you don't. The Cat stuff is nice but it can be hard to get depending on your local dealers' policies.
>>
>>2847191
Everything you said is less than true. You can’t easily buy those Cat pliers unless you’re already buying stuff through a diesel shop. It will probably end up being more than $40 based on the rest of the bullshit in this post because diesel shops will charge Grainger prices to your company’s account.

Also the Knipex is easily available on Amazon or other retailers and is about $30-$35.

Also you’re not going to warranty those “$30” CAT pliers like you can exchange stuff on the rape van with the $70 pliers. Is your diesel parts supply house going to fight with CAT to get you a new pair of pliers when the guy standing behind you is trying to buy $7k worth of parts? So what’s the point of that bullshit argument?

Yea, grab a set of the CAT sockets for cheap if you ever get a chance. Or just go buy Williams on Amazon, warranties will be easier.

Also this >>2847201
>>
>>2847204
I told you I just started buying tools again for the first time like in October right?

If CAT tools are so hard to get, can you explain why I have about 200 chrome sockets in my tool box that are all stamped CAT ? Sitting next to the snnap on stuff I got later

If you walk into a snap-on truck right now, and you go hey I got $30 give me those pliers you guys sell so much of … guess what… you get the pliers…

You don’t need a special account or know a guy who knows a guy who is currently on his second mortgage on an epic box…

I don’t know if you know this but caterpillar waiting rooms are niiiiice

Their main clientele are millionaire developers and farmers… they gave me a Perrier and let me sit on a vintage caterpillar bulldozer from the turn of the century in their show room while they were waiting to pull my $30 pliers from the warehouse

Yeah I’m not saying order a $90,000 bulldozer blade from them but they’re good shit
>>
>>2847201
You can warranty cat stuff easy just go ask them hey man I broke this, or talk to snap-on industrial

You also don’t need a special license or anything to rent a bulldozer

I asked them… I was like what do you need to rent one of these? And they were like … money…same thing for those big ass dump trucks

Apparently SOME Cat dealers will just sell them to you over the counter, but it's definitely not standard. They're also not listed on Cat's site anymore and you have to go through the catalog and figure out the part numbers and have the dealer order them. I did find one dealer that does have an online catalog that looks like you can just order them, though, and they're really well-priced, but I'm not sure if you'll hit a roadblock where you need a business account with them or something if you actually try to do it, or whether they'll ship.

Sieg may live near one of the dealers that's actually cool about it, unfortunately I live in LA where everybody's an asshole and we somehow don't have tons of shit that 200k cities in the Midwest do.

I happened to go to IKEA the other day, which was the same day that my first ever pair of Knipex showed up. Why does nobody ever point out that they both use the same font on their stuff?

Anyway I like the Cobras and think they're worth every penny of the $37 I paid for them on Amazon but they're definitely not the forged in valhalla shit people make them out to be, yeah they're way nicer than a $20 pair of Channelocks but they're still mostly unfinished castings and have way more slop in them than I expected. Also it bothers me that the grip material stops so low on the one handle, unless you've got the jaws almost maxed out you've got a finger or two on bare metal instead of the rubbery stuff.
