what the fuck is ground? do i just stick a wire in the ground? this shit is so stupid.
In electrical engineering, ground or earth may be a reference point in an electrical circuit from which voltages are measured, a common return path for electric current, or a direct physical connection to the Earth.Grounding is the process of connecting a conductor or an electrical device to the earth, effectively providing a safe and stable path for excess electricity to escape. This reduces the risk of electrical shock, electrocution, and fires caused by unexpected voltage spikes or short circuits.
>>2846162I don't know what you're working on, but I'm fairly confident you're going to sustain serious injuries, or die.
>>2846162yeah that's basically it. ground is a reference point.
>>2846162>do i just stick a wire in the ground?yes, a ground rod preferably, google it
>>2846217OP is working on his shitposting skills.
>>2846162Don't let these sparkles convince you to dig a hole, you can just hang a bit of dirt on the wall as a fail safe. Dirt naturally absorbs electricity, its why lightning goes downward most of the time.
>>2846162its literally a wire that is stuck like 2m underground
>>2846264how the fuck does that form a low impedence path
>>2846268You bond it to the neutral of your power system in the US. In the EU they give you a separate ground wire that they bonded to neutral and grounded at the transformer.
>>2846162Yes all wires in ground are connected. Does not need be very low resistance for safety. Yes it does not work in the desert unless very deep
>>2846162the ground needs to be somewhat electrically conductive, so dry sand and dry rock do not work well.>drill a 5' deep hole, then pound an 8' grounding round down it, pour a few gallons of concentrated brine around it.
>>2846237That's too bad. I was hoping OP would sustain serious injuries, or die.
The Ground wire is what permits coherent light (electricity) by providing a parallel plane to guide it protected by the vibrational energy of Mother Gaia via the 36" long elemental silver rod buried deep beneath your hearth during the invocation rite for you hut or dwelling.
>>2846237Aren’t we all from time to time?
>just connect to ground, bro>trust me, it's totally safe>electricity will completely flow that wayWhat a scam
apparently it's full of negative charge
>>2846162refer to article 250 of the NEC
>>2846245This makes mustard gas. Don't do it
>>2846815If so, what does propane burning freon create?
>>2846163no that's wrong. ground contains an infinite number of everything.
>>2846163> short circuits.huh? how does grounding help?
>>2846245Hey you found my stash of brown Mexican hashish!
Guys, why don't we just use our copper plumbing pipes as power delivery in your house? Seems like that'd cut down on unnecessary wiring in a lot of spots, especially rooms that already have plumbing in them.
Everyone resorts to humor because nobody actually understands enough to explain
>>2847800haha what are you talking about mate haha
>>2847229Without grounding a short circuit will change the local reference voltage and cause current in places to flow opposite the intended direction. With grounding a short circuit will largely see current flow into the ground and the rest of the circuit will just see a minor change.
>>2846268it doesn't need to be perfectit just needs to be lower impedance than a human
>>2848372ground (earth) should not be used as a return path because it is not a low resistance path and it will not trip the breaker in case of ground fault and a metal box will remain energized and you will get electrocuted. which is why there is a ground wire that is used as a return path. it has nothing to do with physical ground which is only used to absorb excess current from lightning etc.
>>2846162voltage is the difference between two pointsin domestic single phase these are line and neutral.neutral is bonded (connected) to ground so that no dangerous voltage can exist between neutral and things that you might touch like the actual ground or a metal pipe and so that if the line conductor breaks and leaks to something like the ground or a metal pipe it allows enough current to flow that a circuit protective device can isolate the circuit and prevent human injury (electric shock)there are different ways of grounding a house, one is to use a ground rod BUT it must be installed and tested by a competent person to ensure that it is a low enough impedance path to allow a protective device to trip.
>>2846245Haven't you heard? Nasa says "down" dont exist.
>>2846162>wot is groundits where the dirt is dum dum
still nobody understands well enough to explain, it’s weird, even real electrical engineers struggle so not surprising ’school of hard knocks’ crew has no clue
>>2848500Every description of ground in this thread you ignored because you didn't understand it.
Listen up, you absolute socket lickers:Ground isn't just where you plant your potatoes or bury the evidence. In the electrifying world of circuits, it's the universal reference point and safety net all rolled into one. Think of it as the electrical equivalent of rock bottom - you can't get any lower, voltage-wise.Now pay attention, because I'm about to drop some knowledge that'll make your hair stand on end:1. Ground provides a reference point for measuring voltage. Without it, voltages would be as meaningless as your waifu's love for you.2. It gives excess current a safe path to dissipate. You know, like how /b/ is a dumping ground for your degeneracy.3. In household systems, it's usually connected to a big metal rod shoved deep into the earth.4. It protects you from getting zapped if there's a fault. Because unlike your dating life, we actually want things to have a chance of working out.5. The earth itself isn't some magical electricity sponge. It's more like a really big, moist conductor. So next time you're fumbling around with wires like a drunk octopus, remember: respect the ground, or it might just be the ground you end up kissing.
I won't bother with the textbook definition since you can read that anywhereGround is usually used to refer to the local circuit 0V potential. That means the 0V that you use in your circuit to measure other voltages against.Earth is the global earth potential which is the same everywhere in the world. If a circuit is earth referenced (meaning the 0V in the circuit is the earth) it will be on the same potential to all circuits in the world which are also referenced to earth
