I need a desk. Should I get a soulless height-adjustable modern one like picrel or have one made locally by a carpenter from beech/oak wood? I don't like the perishability of wood though and having one made is probably way more expensive. I also have limited space in my office so the measurements are weird (120x60 cm). I definitely don't want to have to resort to ik*a slop in any case.
>>2903362buy the height-adjustable legs separately. build your own tabletop out of whatever you want. home despot sells precut wood counter and tabletops in lots of different sizes all youd need to do is finish it. i got an electric leg set from autonomous like 7 years ago and made a tabletop out of pallet wood. not perfect but still in use holding up today.
>>2903362Like the other anon said you can do both. Have the local carpenter make a top that you like and mount adjustable legs on the bottom. I love my standing desk, I've had it over a dozen years and I'll never go back.
>>2903373This pretty much. The wife got one of those adjustable desks off Amazon. The top was some flat pack bullshit that came in 2 pieces for easier shipping and the two pieces don’t fit perfectly. First thing I said was “as soon as this gets chewed up, we go get a butcher block too” because it will be like 10 screws and done and have a desk that’s 10x nicer.
>>2903362Change the desk top> I don't like the perishability of woodIt's treated wood. It will outlive you
>>2903362Or decorate the top and the plainness of the desk itself won't matter
>>2903362My desk is a storage shelf
>>2903362You can easily paint some 2x4's and get some laminated board for the top, my local home depot sells laminated 60x30" boards. Put a desk mat over it, stapled covering, etc, whatever you can find.. It's so easy, just make sure you reinforce it with something if you use a cheaper topping so the middle-front doesn't warp. To support the front under section better I cut a divot on both sides and used a piece of triangle metal I got from a local metal shop + some more wood. Made mine for like $80 years ago.

>>2903661i built my own desk last yearcouple of 2x4s and 3/4 ply on the top.used a mitre saw to cut the 2x4s (took a couple of trys to get the angles right) and a router to cut around the inside to make a shelf for the ply to sit on so its flush with the 2x4 at the edge. glue everything and clamp.actually, i lied, it wasn't that simple. what i also did was make two 45s at one of the corners where its in a corner wall so i can pass cables though. (its hard against two walls). i also put two dowels in every 2x4 joint, i took some time and made a little jig to get the drill to hit the same spot on each side.then i just covered everything with 5 or 6 coats of PU varnish. probably the first time i ever did any kind of painting etc properly; i got a thermometer and kept the room warm enough as instructed while it cured. sanded between coats as instructed. came out great.i just anchored another 2 2x4 to the two walls for it to sit on. the outside corner is propped up at the moment but im going to make a triangle support for that corner from the wall so it has no legs.fuck the height adjustable too, just fucking mount it at just above around countertop height and get a taller chair. then you can work sitting or standing.having monitors on your desk is also absolutely cucked, get them on the wall.
