I've been making some small changes to a basic shader and I have some questions for people who do modelling of pmx and accessories.MMD divides the 'specular color' of an accessory by 10. This might be intentional or a bug, but it means to get visible specular reflections, you have to use a specular color of maybe 4~7. (You may also have to turn on shadows for the accessory if it's large or flat since non-self-shadow uses 'Gouraud shading' that interpolates the specular output between vertices instead of 'Phong shading' that calculates it in the pixel shader.)So, question 1: do the programs you use to edit .x accessories allow you to input a specular color above 1? If most don't, then shaders should be multiplying specular color by 10.Second question is practically the same, but for different reasons. Typical materials reflect more light at grazing angles; you can easily see this with a glass window. If materials have two specular values, "specular power" and "specular color", it seems to make sense for "specular color" to be the light reflected when looking straight at the surface, since basically any smooth surface should reflect 100% of light at a grazing angle. (A complication is model textures being tuned as though there is more incoming light, which requires stronger specular reflections for the same relative effect.)The problem is that 'specular color' is the peak brightness of the specular highlight, and for a point light source on a shiny surface this value should approach infinity. If it's limited to 1, we can't give a material the properties of a metallic surface like silver or alumin[i]um, and the smoother a surface is (lower specular power) the darker it has to be (total amount of light reflected when specular color is 1).So, second question: do the modeling programs you use for pmx models also restrict "specular color" to 1? Or do they restrict it to 1, but this value is already supposed to mean "percent of light reflected"?

My notes to myself about this:It might not actually be a problem for calculated 'fresnel minimum' to be above 1; in fact, the problem might be that for smooth materials, a specular color limited to 1 can't reach a high fresnel minimum. Like, if specular color is 1, and surface is roughest possible, it should just be like a white diffuse color, so 'fresnel minimum' is just 1 and for any other combination of settings (if color is limited to 1) it will be less than 1.So I don't think it's enough to just say that "specular power of 50 means it's perfectly shiny, even though the the specular highlight is still relatively large instead of a super-bright point". We would still want a 'specular color' above 1 here; we just wouldn't need it to be infinite. So can you specify a color above 1 in model properties? If not, how should a shader interpret it?~
>>2783628Raising a material's R/G/B/A properties above 1 tends to result in fuckery, especially the alpha. Personally I stopped caring about setting specific specular colors entirely after I learned the requirements to make stuff shine with AutoLuminous and realized why my brightness adjustment morphs weren't working at intermediate values (I had non-zero specular RGB, and the morphs involved multiplying the values by zero in addition to increasing specular power). Since I mostly use either a combination of GS+AL or RayCast (with optional AL), potential benefits of such specular tweaking do not concern me. Regarding the last phrase, try to find out which bits of code handle AL's response to model morphs and material properties. I have a hunch you could learn from it.
I have another question about models. An accurate tangent vector would be nice for satin-like materials, that have a specular reflection that extends in a certain direction based on fiber orientation. If MMD were updated to use such tangent vectors in the vertex shader, rotating them like it does for normals, you could have better results than what's possible with the texture-coordinate hack which always has sharp boundaries between faces.So does the pmx format (like later versions of it or something) have any provision for providing a tangent vector? I know it can store 'extra data' for vertices, which AutoLuminous uses for colors, but what about tangents specifically?Do other common model formats store tangent in addition to normal? As in, is this something that actually makes sense and MMD just doesn't do it because it's 14 years old and not under active development?

Then it has special math to determine if this data was meant for AutoLuminous, and if so it decodes the data by using each digit for a different flag and so on.I think the important thing, though, is that just like MMD modifies the position of vertices for pmx objects before sending them to the vertex shader (but not position of accessory vertices), it also rotates normals of pmx objects using the weights of all the parent bones and so on before providing them to the vertex shader. To use tangent vector, MMD would either need to rotate the tangent vector or give us the rotation matrix is used for the normals.There's a small chance that if a model provided tangents, the 'TANGENT' semantic would rotate them, just like some weird semantics like vertex count work. But if the model format can't handle tangents, then we obviously can't do this.I'm not surprised you stopped caring about specular values for models. I assume GS means Greener Shader? Which I tried like once but don't know much about. My understanding is that with RayCast, people select a specific material shader for each object material, so basically ignoring the properties except for texture. And with the default shader, the main reason people never got into the habit of using specular with models is that MMD doesn't do proper gamma. It doesn't convert sRGB textures to linear before processing and then convert the linear color output back to sRGB, and without this, specular looks very wrong.However, if you fix the specular math, then people can start making models with useful specular values.I guess I've seen models that raise colors (diffuse/ambient) above 1 using sliders, but I don't think I've ever seen one that had base colors above 1 with all sliders at 0. Compare linear light math spotlight, that converts from 'linear light gamma' to 'sRGB' gamma after adding together the lights, instead of before:Obviously this example doesn't show specular directly, but it's the same basic problem: a small amount of light added to another value with 'sRGB gamma' is too dark if the second value is dark, correct if all color channels in the second value are around 0.45 or something, and too bright (which is what we see in the previous image) if the second value is above around 0.45.
>>2783631I realize I misunderstand what you were saying about AL. I thought you were responding to what I saw in my comment below yours (which you obviously weren't). That's using the (self) model as a control object to get values that influence the light strength and so on, which is different (and a lot simpler) than the vertex-based data which basically no one uses. The author of AL even provided that program to set those vertex values because doing it manually is so tedious or something (I've never tried it, and if I use AL it's with an edited version of the program that omits all that vertex-level processing of colors and position).

(One cool thing that it might be hard to do in a normal model editor, and easier to do by editing as a text document, is cloning parts of an X-accessory. You can use a transformation matrix to rotate and move it. So I think this would make it easy to do a high-resolution tiled floor, that's brighter and darker in places using material properties, without using a large texture. Microsoft website has a tutorial on how.)
