ETA Panerais were ok, the first generations of ValFleurier ones were alright but it's all been downhill since the late 2010s. Which would be okay if it didn't coincide precisely with price increases.
Also, you can change that to :

I rate Omega's wacky experimental early quartz and electric watches.
>>
>>18071294
Yeah. Things like the marine chronometer were genuine attempts to make a better timekeeper.
Then they realized no one cared and the quality suffered.
>>
>>18071292
>>Baume & Mervier : never
Irrelevant brand (that is now making movements for IWC for some reasons) but there's some nice vintage stuff for smaller budgets.
>>
>>18071295
That or the Montreal/Albatross.
Same earlier when they used Accutron movements for a bit because they were the most accurate on the market. No matter how butthurt it made them to have to say they used Bulova movements. They really were comitted to "muh accuracy"
Especially when everyone had stopped caringhonestly though, the saddest part is that now they will not release anything unless it can fit into one of their three collections. Anything else (that isn't Olympics-related) can fuck off. It's a small miracle that they still keep the Railmaster on life support.
And it's not going to change unless the Swatch Group decides to completely change its strategy. Which it won't because every new super duper limited edition of the Speedmaster sells well. Or at least it sells well enough.

"Suggest a watch for me."
I don't know shit about watches. My current watch is a Timex Expedition I purchased for $40 about 10 years ago. My wardrobe has moved up since then, mostly /tip/ influenced, and I think I need to step up my watch game as well. My date square is also broken, permanently stuck at 27.

>Your budget
$300 maybe, unless they're is some super must have or value beyond that point.
>Watch type, e.g. dress, diver, pilot
I like the basic style of the expedition. Diver watches are too bulky, pilot watches are too cluttered, and dress watches are too gaudy.
>Movement, e.g. automatic, hand-wound, quartz
I'm not sure about this. While I know Quartz is worry free for the most part, an automatic with the pendulum thing sounds nice. Hand-wound sounds too involved for my tastes.
>Desired features, e.g. water resistance, day/date, 2nd-time zone
Maybe a stopwatch feature would be nice, but besides that I'm not sure.
>Preferred strap option, e.g. leather, nylon, bracelet
Definitely not bracelet.
>Wrist size or desired watch size
6.6", I think 40mm looks good.

So far I have looked at the timex expedition north, there is a version with a titanium housing and some sapphire glass. Are those features useful? I don't know. My watch now has some gouges on the glass face, and dings on the case, I am uncertain how much value you get from the higher quality materials. Have also looked at the Hamilton khaki and Seiko 5.

It's funny, there are people who don't understand that there are certain watches that look good if these watches are small, like the Cartier Tank, the Rolex Explorer or the PP Calatrava. On the other hand, there are watches that look good being big, for example the Omega Spedmaster.

They just want to validate their insecurities and shit tier bargain bin dress watches that nobody wants.

Blancpain has been linked to F. Piguet for a while now. The Blancpain movement manfacture is just F. Piguet renamed.

They both make mostly dress watches and high horology movements. Blancpain is only remembered for their ugly dive watch. And JLC has been pushed upmarket a shit ton by Richemont in the last years. There is barely a JLC under 10k these days.

There really isn’t. Jaeger-LeCoultre makes movements for a lot of different brands in the Richemont portfolio.
The way that Swatch is set up, everyone is either using ETA movements or building in-house.

Richemont has ValFleurier but Piaget and JLC, for example still making movements in their own facilities for other brands.
>>
>>18071341
It is, it's just that both have a history of making movements or parts for others, that both have a history if innovation and both are now nowhere near their potential because their corporate owners are being shitheads.
JLC is being treated as a cash-cow and it's working so well they can kick up the prices to the point the only Reversos below 10k are quartz.
Breguet is an afterthought and has been since Nick Hayek died.
>>
>>18071346
Talk about falling off a cliff. In the mid 2000’s those were so cool. I can’t think of a brand that has been that incompetently mismanaged.
>>
>>18071351
>The way that Swatch is set up, everyone is either using ETA movements or building in-house.
Not even close.Lemania was folded into Breguet something like 20 years ago and has been making the Moonwatch movements ever since then. ETA is making the co axial movements for the other Omega watches. Not sure what you would even consider in house in this context. Omega making Omega movements in their workshops? They don't do that. They get them from either Breguet or ETA.

I would still consider it in house but Omega isn't playing a part in that.
>>
>>18071353
>I can’t think of a brand that has been that incompetently mismanaged.

*cough*

Longines.
>>
>>18071355
Longines is profitable, at least.
>>
>>18071354
Ultimately it's the people that operate the machines.
>>
>>18071357
But they have the movement parts made by 3rd parties. They don't forge steel themselves or make jewels. They just finish them and put them together (even JLC and Breguet). They engrave, refine, and so on.

But anyway, then Omega uses 0% in house movements because it's all Breguet/ETA and before it was Lemania/ETA.
>>
>>18071356
Yeah because Indians can't afford Omega, Breitling and Tag.

Longines is bottom of the barrel trash, keep in mind it used to be one of the best watch brands in the world. I'm talking Rolex level of fame. They were the first fucking aviators watch for gods sake.
>>
>>18071337
OK. For example, I have a 36 mm Explorer, but I have nothing against the 39 and 40 version. If you are a big boy with a big wrist, go ahead, the important thing is that it fits you well. Different watches for different people, that's okay.
>>
>>18071363
Sure. Always funny to see wristlets call watches shit for being 40mm or larger tho. For literally that reason alone. It's a dead giveaway and beautiful cope from these manlets.
>>
>>18071353
Unfortunately the CEO who took over in 2018 is clueless and doubled down on bullshit no one wanted. Their only hope is to fire him and bring in someone who will radically change the brand because at this point they have been irrelevant for 15 years.
>muh in-house factory

>>
>>18071364
This, of course, underscores the difference between a fat wrist and a large wrist. A large wrist on a physically fit man can comfortably wear a 40mm+ sports watch and a smaller dress watch.

If you put a small dress watch on a fat wrist, it will just look comical, like a tiny hat or a too-short necktie. Their wrists are just formless blobs.

tl;dr: wear a watch sized appropriately to its design and don’t be fat.

How are these heritage collection grand seikos? I wanted to get a white birch but the band having no quick adjust for the price they are is just a dealbreaker for me currently. These being under $4k on chrono24 are a lot more tempting and would maybe just put a leather band on it instead of their bracelet.

I have a question to the watchmaker anon who went to Wostep. I saw a hand made Greubel Forcey (fun time) retail for like $200000. Just interesting, how difficult and expensive would it be to make a (mostly) hand made watch but in steel, little to no decoration on the movement and no complications? Let's say not 99% made by hand but like 80%. Also I appreciate your comments and replies to stupid questions like mine. Hope your watchmaker journey leads you to your dream

The finishing.
The mechanical and quartz sides of Grans Seiko operate pretty independently of each other.
The mechanical side has its own facilities and they do a noticeably better job with their movement finishing.

I'd never spend $3k on a watch. What would be the point? The sad truth that people don't want to say out loud is that no wristwatch worth having costs retails for less than around $7k. If you can score one for less used, great. If you're looking to buy a watch and you don't have that sort of money yet then it's best to wear an inexpensive casio or seiko until then

No one buys a GS at retail, though. Walk into a boutique and they offer you at least 25% off without you even asking.

The best value is buying a GS used that someone bought and decided a week later he hated. Close to 50% off retail there.

>>
>>18071498
>tl;dr
It's as difficult as you'll want to make it and price will vary from expensive to extremely expensive.

>longpost is looooong
It's all going to depend on what exactly is meant by "hand-made". You cannot have a fully hand-made watch since jewels cannot be hand-made. They used to and they were shit when they were polished by hand.
So exactly what machines will be allowed? Is a motorized lathe allowed? A column drill? A milling implement on the lathe? All these will increase the cost of operations at first but they save so much time that you'll pay for them faster than you'd think.
The next question is how many parts do you allow yourself to outsource? Jewels are already mandatory, but hairspring and mainspring could help too since they require some very specialized gear you won't use for much else and the failiure rate during production is very high. Not to mention, factory-made springs will have much better materials than anything you could work on by hand. Especially for mainsprings, you are far better off using something factory-made and building your own barrel to house it. Your own mainspring with shitty geometry, uneven texture and tension will not be as good, it just won't. And that's if you can even make it yourself. I don't know how to.
>>
>>18071498
cont.
As for decoration, it's not actually as complex or time-consuming and therefore expensive as many brands would like you to think. It just comes with the risk of ruining parts at the last stage of construction. But if you know what you're doing, you can easily get your movement fully decorated to Geneva Stamp standards by just doing some perlage and cotes. The real trouble begins when you do anglage/beveling by hand (very easy to overshoot and mess up, or to do unevenly) or do hand-engraving.
Another huge factor is exactly what movement you will make. Are you copying from schematics in the public domain? Are you reverse-engineering an old movement? Are you starting from scratch? Needless to say, any amount of engineering you need to do has to factor into the total cost.
I guess I'll gradually be able to give you a better answer : I'm working on a complication module with a jeweler buddy so we can try and build a few watches with a 6498 (or a chinese clone because Swatch are dicks and won't sell to anyone anymore so suppliers are sitting on stock they can't renew) and see how it goes.

It does have amazing hands and markers finishing at that price point and it hits way above its price class. The focus on GS is on the dial. If Dial is important to you, then it is the best brand you can buy for that money. The rest of the watch is just mediocre with the exception of the black polishing, which is also very rare to see at sub 5 digits.
You decide for yourself.

It's mostly here so when repair time comes and something is wrong with the hairspring, third-party watchmakers can't do anything and have to send the watch back to the maker's repair center or beg (and pay) for a repair accreditation. Solidity and anti-magnetic properties have nothing to do with it.
>I want solid caseback anti magnetic watches back
You already have them, it's pretty much any watch with a solid caseback. Most watching have some sort of soft-iron casing circle to deal with magnetism and protect the movement.
It's cool to have solid casebacks though. I like engravement space in casebacks.

I really like these Baltic HMS 003 (especially the chronograph version) but I don't like this:

What they should have done is this:

Now that would be vintage-inspired done right. 20mm lug width was almost non-existent in the 1960s. 18mm was the norm.

I think too many people mistake the watch they like with the watch they think other people like. If you buy what you actually like, then it's not hard to accept that some people will like your watch and others won't; you'll be able to have a discussion. If you're just wearing what you think will garner approval from others, criticism of your watch can feel like a personal attack.

There are no wait lists for any Overseas except the blue dials. The 2nd gen blue dial was limited to 250 pieces, which is way less than the new ones, and the 2nd gen blue dials are going for the same money as the 3rd gen blue dials. So, eat shit.

that's because stainless steel has higher thermal conductivity. I do like the coolness but at the same time i like that my titanium watch always feels around the same temperature. When i first put it on in the morning its not too much different than if i take it off and put it back on. Titanium is a softer material too i believe so in theory scratches more but that hasnt really been my experience with the one i have.

The softness of titanium can be largely mitigated with surface treatments. Seiko and Casio each do that a lot. It's not foolproof, but it helps.

yeah i was just going off of the hardness of titanium vs stainless steel. The only titanium watch i have is an old breitling and it's only scratched on the clasp, but not overly so for a 30+ year old watch. Meanwhile i have had steel clasps with noticeable scratching the first day i wear them

Have any of you removed the cyclops from a Rolex before? I'm considering the blue flutted datejust but thats the one thing about them i really dont like about it

it looks like how other watches look. I dont really get why they even have it, why would you need a magnifier for the date? I wish they just sold them without it.
>>
>>18072059
So that when you get old you can see the date? You do plan on having the watch the rest of your life, right?
>>
>>18072066
It's like comically enlarged. If your vision is that bad you have glasses. Are you saying basically no other watch brand does this because no one keeps them for life? By the time i'm 80 i probably wont even know or care what the date is anyways.
>>
>>18072051
Man, just imagine if there was a blue dial explorer ii? That would be so neat.

I could see it. I mean, it was only a few months ago that no one could have ever imagined a two-tone Explorer I.

At last, someone who knows to kneel before his social betters.
>>
How do you decide if a watch is too small (or large) for you if it's something you cant see in person. There's one i'm looking at which comes in a 40mm and 36mm and usually i would get the 40 but the dial color i like more is only on the 36. The smallest watch i have is a 33mm and it is pretty small looking for me (not something id buy myself but was inherited).
>>
>>18072137
>who knows to kneel before his social betters.
Not at all. I think that he just found his watch.
It's still ugly in my eyes, but he has a right to wear everything he wants.
>>
>>18072139
>How do you decide if a watch is too small (or large) for you if it's something you cant see in person.
If the price is cheap enough and/or the vendor has a return policy, then there's no risk.
If you know the diameter, lug-to-lug, and lug width, you can usually mock up something with a piece of paper and see how it fits on your wrist.
For myself, though, I would never buy anything I've not tried on. You can never quite tell how something will fit just based on the meansurements.
>>
>>18072034
Modern DJ two tone looks so strange compared to the vintage ones. I just can’t put my finger on it, it just feels like they’re unnecessarily thick or wide.
>>
>>18072140
That's great. I know i can wear whatever I want. I'm only curious as to why you thought your opinion mattered.

>>

>be pre-boomer
>wear glasses
It’s honestly the only watch I wear that I can tell the date on. I mean besides the Apple Watch where I can have the screen set to jitterbug mode. I prefer watches where there’s no date wheel at all though.
>>
>>18072148
Reminds me how Stallone joked when he was first spreading Panerais around Hollywood that they're great for people who need reading glasses.
>>
>>18072141
Fair enough, says they have a 60 day return policy but i assume id have to pay shipping to return so thats still a risk. I wouldnt consider $2k as cheap either (even though others would). I wish i could see these in person so i can feel the titanium version vs the steel version. I've never really understood the lug to lug measurement, the 36mm has a 40.8mm LtL which probably would look fine on me.

>>18072148
How old are you? I've never had an issue with date on any watch i have, although most of them have larger windows than the rolex does. I'd prefer the rolex just use a slightly larger date window instead of the dumb magnifier.
>>
>>18071771
I honestly do not understand why these are worth so much. I would rather they not have a date at all, it looks like want to copy both the Explorer and Datejust but couldn’t decide so they just copied both.
>>
Why are all date window watches white? Why do they rarely customize that part of the movement to be more subtle and match the rest of the watch better?
>>
>>18072149
This is the sole reason that I wear mostly jlc amvox watches. Fuck this.

>I've never really understood the lug to lug measurement, the 36mm has a 40.8mm LtL which probably would look fine on me.
Lug-to-lug is a funny measurement because it does not take into consideration whether the lugs curve down.

Breguet, for example, tend to have long L2L measurements for their case size, but the lugs angle down to hug the wrist. Nomos, on the other hand, also have long L2L measurements for their case size, but the lugs jut straight out from the case.

>>
>>18072152
>I honestly do not understand why these are worth so much.
Can't get a Nautilus?
Can't get a Royal Oak?
Still need a steel sports watch from a "Holy Trinity" maker? Say no more.

It's the same reason that the Girard Perregaux Laureato is as expensive as it is these days, or why the steel Piaget Polo exists at all.

The funniest part is that the Overseas isn't some 1970s design that just happened to be timeless. It's a 1990s design that's gone through a number of revisions. VC tried a couple times to make a luxury sports watch. The Overseas' current hype is entirely because of the Royal Oak's and Nautilus' unavailability.
>>
>>18072162
>are there any good diagrams i can look at to better understand this?

None that I know of. It's a very three-dimensional thing. It's even affected by caseback profile.
>>
>>18072161

Haha thanks frens. I stopped watching anime besides a few shows like Mahoako, but I keep coming back mainly for the watch discussion. I’m afraid the Rolex forum just feels too boomer for me at times.
>>
>>18072165
I can see that as a reason but at this price range I honestly wouldn’t think people are still willing to settle. The 222 I think is great, but the Overseas the watch/bracelet proportions just seems off for me. And for the price they are asking I rather get a cheaper Day/Date.
>>

>>
>>18072034
I would trade that in for a Moser heritage dual time. But that's just me.
>>
What are your favorite brands and why?
For me, in no particular order:
>Seiko
I fucking love the concept of an accessible mechanical watch, that's not only robust, but cheap and reliable. Special kudos for the Prospex line (Alpinist rules).
>Moser
I feel like it's the perfect brand for richfags anons. The craftsmanship is superb, the designs are beautiful, and it's not overly hyped, making it somewhat of an underdog.
>Pre-Ritchmont JLC and ALS, Minerva, Eterna and Universal Geneve
I don't have a lot to say about those ones, but they all made wonderful movements and watches. Each one of them with their own design language and porpuse. I feel like they are all criminaly underrated.
>Rolex
Rich history, iconic designs, fair retail prices. What's more to like?
>Tudor
Poor man's Rolex, but I find that awesome. I don’t even own one, but if I had to choose between a Sub and a Pelagos/BB, I would probably go for the latter. The role idea behind a tool watch is being used in the field/to get work done, so as it’s much more likely to do that with a Tudor than a Rolex, what’s the point of choosing a Rolex? Of course I can appreciate its beauty (and I do appreciate it), but for a tool watch, I’m with Tudor all the way.
>>
>>18072313
TBQH Tudor is pretty poorly finished for the price. Rolex on the other hand MSRP wise is pretty reasonable. The AD bullshit is pretty retarded though.
>>
>>18072318
Is it? I've only seen one in real life once at an AD. It looked alright to me. Like, for the same price of course I would buy a SuperOcean, but I think Tudor's design is more iconic. I already have a Sub, so it doesn't make sense to buy another "sub-like" diver at the same price as a SuperOcean.
>>
>>18072321
To be clear: I hadn't bought the Sub, it was from my father.
>>
I just realized Tudor and Grand Seiko are literally polar opposites. Tudor has great designs but poor finishing, and Grand Seiko has great finishing but poor designs.
>>
>>18072321
Honestly I prefer vintage Rolexes, like give me a vintage Pepsi where the bezel isn’t fucked with and I’d be happy for life. For a modern watch I don’t want any of the big 3 or holy trinity, I would be happy with GS Spring Drive if you don’t lose 60% of it’s value walking out of the AD. Or have to worry about parts availability on used watches seeing that Seiko seems to not stock parts(Arturo/Kinetic owners are fucked even though the Kinetic eventually evolved into the SD) when watches get discontinued.
>>
>>18072325
Yeah, but a SuperOcean is a great alternative. It looks fucking awesome, the price is ok and it's really well-finished.
>>
>>18072323
If something like a Pelagos 39 was 2.5k I think it would be a good value. You open that shit up and the movement looks worst than a fucking ETA or Stella you’d find in an Invicta. The display caseback on the 925 is almost laughable. 5k OTD is utterly ridiculous for a Titanium Grade 2 watch especially when a $300 Citizen solar perpetual calendar moon phase uses Grade 5.
>>
>>18072328
Only issue for me is I don’t like how it looks, it’s just not for me. If I hit the loot the VC I want would probably be the Jumbo(38mm) 222. And I complain about Rolex a lot but I still put my name down at every AD(Daytona 126500/Batgirl impossible or Batman-might be possible)I've come across and come running if they call my name.
>>
>>18072337
loot=lotto
>>
>>18072323
I actually wanted GS because Whoretadello was shilling it so much but now that I’ve become a sex tourist myself and saw one in Thailand in real life I kinda no longer want one. The finishing is great and it’s pretty shiny, but the proportion is all wrong. And unlike Rolex there seems to be two level of finishing, the watch is finished pretty well but the band seems to be a lesser grade of finishing.

>the bracelet is shit, though for 35 for the whole package you get a fully solid bracelet with just the top of the clasp stamped
>one of the bracelet screws didn't have enough of a cut for screwdriver to work, the links also grate and stick one to another, tolerances are all over the place
>screw down crown that doesn't feel nice to screw/unscrew
>the movement is nice to look in action, but comparing how the time setting works on this and on a mechanical really shows the difference how shitty quartz movements are actually made (turning the crown feels out of sync on how the hands move)
it's a shitter, but put it on a slightly modified nato and you have yourself a good summer beater
