When is that book from? It says "black suits are worn only for weddings or funerals" but I've been to Japan several times over the last ~15 years and they're ubiquitous on salarymen (and not just job interview seekers, before somebody says it). I went to Japan for work in 2017, was working at a Japanese company but mostly in the US, and was treated as somewhat edgy by Japanese colleagues because I wore my normal navy and tan suits from the US.

I guess different color suits and flashy suits are stereotyped as yakuza suits

Navy isn't really on that level, you do see a decent number of office workers wearing them, but I guess you're basically seen as trying to be cool and different when you wear one. Tan might be more Yakuza, now that I think about it I never wore mine in Japan but my boss did make some comments when he saw me wearing it in the US.

Japanese fashion is cool but not on you.

only shit that fits me because i'm short. works out great -- best price to quality ratio in the world and their currency is weak against the dollar.

The Japanese just put way more thought into how they present themselves than westerners. I was just in Tokyo and the average person there dressed far better than people in other fashionable cities like NYC or Paris. Regardless of whether they were just dressed in a suit for work or in some kind of quirky hipster outfit, they just did it far better.
