30s-50s retros are cool. Would be nice if we had a modern car inspired by the 7 seater limousines of the 1940s.

Pic related: the cvnty pt cruiser is as close as we’ve gotten.

How fucking BEYOND pointless. "Let's just smooth out the edges of this iconic design so it looks like the fucking Robocop remake turned into a car." These motherfuckers are gonna kill Zemeckis just so they can have an hours long Stranger Things-style advertisement for this shit, aren't they? Contemporary car design SUCKS. It's all the same soulless rounded off shit again and again. It's like you made a slick design in some program before deciding to use the fucking blur tool to make everything look like indistinguishable grayed out goo. It all looks the exact fucking same. Even the Cybertruck, which you could at least argue was an attempt to do something unique, is just a Delorean model run through the graphics engine of a fucking Playstation game from the 90's. Is there no art left in this world?

this isn't exactly true - I bought a 2007 CLS63 AMG, although in mint condition - 64k original kms, imported to Europe from Japan 4 years ago - I had to do some basic maintenance after the previous owner (brakes, tires, rear window shade mechanism, some minor suspension things), but when it comes to "broken" parts I was unlucky with a crank sensor (like 80 USD/EUR), and one of the front airmatic shock absorbers broke in half and nobody knows how - 2 specialist workshops checked the car before.

I did some detailing with ceramic coating, undercarriage rustproofing and enjoy the ride and sound. It doesn't even use that much fuel, especially when compared to much older cars with smaller displacement.

The problem with older cars with low mileage like this is you are waiting for some rubber and plastic cracks that might eventually appear - I'm definitely smelling some coolant now when leaning toward the radiator, but no mechanic found the exact leak spot yet.

Had one of these myself. Probably the best ride you could ask for, especially with the 15" wheels and chunky tyres. Beyond simple to work on too and only major thing I ever needed to do in 6 years of ownership was control arm bushings and the oil pan gasket.

>>18591535
I love E39s my experience owning one was a nightmare. Either I got a lemon or they're overhyped, who knows. Great seats and interior materials but it handled like a really big boat, not too dissimilar from a panther body. Unexpected for all the praise they get.

Based selection. I can never decide between getting a V12 or V8 E38 though.

Driving experience is important. Some cars that are ultra good looking might have some annoying bullshit like rock hard suspension and people that ride with you will notice and comment on it. Going over a pothole is a lot more nerve racking too.

If you're going to find an E38, don't go V12 now, parts are pretty impossible to find now for the M70/M73 so if something breaks you're gonna have to scour the internet or carpart.

Plus V12 suspension bits are all NLA.

There's a guy in my area with an E28 740 sporty shorty and I'm really considering knocking on his door and making an offer.

Bottom line: find a southern US rust-free LCI 740i. That was perfection. iL's are great but I've always wanted a shorty.

I miss old cars so bad, bros. What are the most affordable/stable options ITT? Besides the more recent models everything looks good to me. I just can't realistically afford to be constantly getting work done on it, I'd want it to be my daily driver. Is it even worth getting an old car in my situation? I'm kicking myself for not buying one sooner.
>>
>>18594499
Brutal, I guess I'll stick to V8 then. It also seems like the V8 models are less troublesome overall.

>I just can't realistically afford to be constantly getting work done on it, I'd want it to be my daily driver. Is it even worth getting an old car in my situation? I'm kicking myself for not buying one sooner.
It really really depends. Older Euro cars can be really solid, but the previous owner plays a big part in that a lot of the time. It's worth spending more on a good example with autistic level repair records than something cheaper that is potentially lacking maintenance.

I get the same feeling with new cars that I get every time a new version of Windows comes out with worse design, more privacy invading shit, and more bloated features nobody with a brain would ever want. Seems like there isn't an industry left that isn't forcing this bullshit down our throats. Flattened soulless designs and "features" that are just there to rape your privacy and performance. It feels like such a jaded boomer thing to think but it's just true.

If you could find a clean M73 V12 with service history I'd still buy one, but I'm a chump. The 2 V12's I owned over the years I sold to the same guy and he's still driving them to this day.

everything made after around 2012 is designed to fail and not be fixed. by made after i mean when the last generational refresh or update happened, not the year the car was made. there's some models manufactured up until 2018-2020 that are good because they never got updated.

its called crippleware https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crippleware
brands like honda and toyota have been coasting on a reputation for making solid reliable cars that hasn't even been true for decades because people remember the cars they made in the 1990s.
the market for cars in the west is not growing. everyone who wants to own a car probably already does. the manufacturers all know this but line must go up. the focus on the automotive industry in the 2010's was to make cars break more often and be less fixable so you buy more new cars. now the focus is on emerging markets like china, india and the middle east because people with economic mobility who don't yet own a car because they can't afford it or don't have roads to drive but want one live there.
line must go up and selling well made cars that don't break to your existing customers doesn't make line go up.
by the time the reputation of these brands goes in the gutter the ceo's long gone and got hired at another company.

>Is it even worth getting an old car in my situation?
Probably not. Old cars will always have shit breaking, even if they were meticulously cared for. Rubber becomes hard and brittle over time so sooner or later you're gonna start having leaks as hoses and seals fail, and eventually nothing short of a full engine rebuild will fix it. Other expensive mechanical parts that are "lifetime" are really only expected to last 100k-200k miles because moving parts will inevitably wear out no matter how built to last the car was. People overstate how reliable old cars are, yes a properly maintained old engine will go for a very long time especially since there's less stuff to break, but that doesn't mean it's just yearly oil changes and go, there's a lot of other expensive maintenance involved in keeping an old car on the road. So if you can't/won't do your own repairs, can't afford to pay a mechanic, and need a reliable daily driver, get something newer.

>Old cars will always have shit breaking, even if they were meticulously cared for.
everything's old and worn out but it was made to a higher standard and with higher quality materials back then so a lot of times its actually the modern car that breaks more often.
parts are cheap on the old car and the old car can be worked on by a hobbyist.
parts are expensive or often even NLA on the new car and can't be worked on yourself.
planned obsolescence is a design consideration with new cars.

>Rubber becomes hard and brittle over time
>you're gonna start having leaks
fair but that's only a problem on old cars with crammed engine bays. $200 and an afternoon fix on stuff that was more designed to be worked on.

>and eventually nothing short of a full engine rebuild will fix it
all the rubber shit other than the freeze plugs and seals are outside of the engine. you can run a car that's leaking oil out of the main seal or freeze plugs forever as long as you top the oil off. you also don't have to take the engine apart to replace them usually you just gotta drop the engine.

>expensive mechanical parts that are "lifetime" are really only expected to last 100k-200k miles because moving parts will inevitably wear out no matter how built to last the car was
you save up and do a major service every hundred thousand or so. your manual will usually tell you how often. its 10 times cheaper than driving a new car it just requires low time preference and planning for the future.

>overstate how reliable old cars are
yes in the sense that not all old cars are reliable, well made, or were taken care of. just because its old doesn't mean its reliable.
but no in the sense that you're wrong when it comes to good examples of the good year/options/make/model combos if taken care of or properly restored. there is no car made today that is as reliable as something like an old red block volvo, an old pre chrysler merc diesel, late 80s bmw, and 90s honda/toyota. not even close
>>
>>18595082
char limit
but i do agree with your overall point. don't buy an old car unless you work on cars or have a lot of money to burn and a pocket mechanic. don't buy an old car unless you know a lot about cars.
if you just want something reliable that's cheap to get work done on get a toyota or honda before around 2012 not a classic car. then throw a new head unit in it and it'll feel modern enough. most new car features and amenities are worthless but bluetooth and car play are nice.
>>
>>18595082
the way to avoid this experience is budget a couple thousand to immediately refresh the car when you buy it. if you have $7000 don't buy a $7000 car get a $5000 one and clean it up.
and also don't buy makes/models you can only afford shit examples of. if you have to pick between an optioned out one with a cool paint color that's beat up or the one in a boring color and base trim because of your budget pick the boring one every time.

Anon here, that basically covers what I was asking about.
>old red block volvo, an old pre chrysler merc diesel,
Man, I can already tell these two are gonna start me on an autistic research bender.
>don't buy an old car unless you work on cars
Gotta learn somehow, right? You probably have a point. I'm basically just trying to hedge my bets by picking something that's known for being in better shape most of the time, it depends on what I find so I'm keeping options open atm.
>toyota or honda before around 2012
Sounds good, I'll take them into consideration.
>budget a couple thousand to immediately refresh the car
Yeah, that seems intuitive.
>don't buy makes/models you can only afford shit examples of
Hard advice to commit to, but definitely right. Thanks.
>>
>>18595129
>parts are cheap on the old car
Highly depends on the car. Old cheap shitty econoboxes that sold millions and you can still spot dozens on the road every day will have plenty of junkyard parts for you to pick from for cheap, but those aren't the old cars people lust after.
>there is no car made today that is as reliable as something like an old red block volvo, an old pre chrysler merc diesel, late 80s bmw, and 90s honda/toyota. not even close
A pristine example of most if not all those will be very hard to find and probably overpriced. Hell, cheap old BMWs are the quintessential enthusiast noobtrap. Almost everything cheap in this age bracket and older will either have barely been maintained or been sitting in a garage for 20 years and will be falling apart.
>>18595196
>Gotta learn somehow, right?
Do NOT use your daily driver as a wrenching learner or project car. You WILL underestimate how long it takes you to do something, you WILL have the car on jacks for a week plus waiting on parts, you WILL have to end up taking it to the mechanic in the end at least once, you WILL give up on a big job and the car will end up as a lawn ornament. People who know more about wrenching than you have walked down this path before and given up. Get something 10-ish years old, decently well maintained, and have money set aside to pay for a mechanic when needed. Once you have more money, buy a 20 year old shitbox as a second car to wrench on and go wild on that one.
>>
>>18593481
Good looking car, i heard it sucks at being a car though.

>Gotta learn somehow, right? You probably have a point. I'm basically just trying to hedge my bets by picking something that's known for being in better shape most of the time, it depends on what I find so I'm keeping options open atm.
i should have said willingness to learn and turn your own wrench. you can probably figure out how to do everything down to the headgasket on most cars with a shop manual, forums, and youtube rather easily these days.
two pro tips: car forums are still alive and better than social media groups for technical questions. and BENTLEY makes manuals for a lot of random ass pedestrian cars -- if they made one for your car its way better than the chilton.
and like the other anon said, don't make your main car your project car.

>>18595925
>Highly depends on the car.
yeah but modern cars are having parts availability issues and nla parts the day they roll out of the factory because manufacturers don't want you repairing modern cars.
>A pristine example of most if not all those will be very hard to find and probably overpriced.
cash for clunkers was a disaster and we're just now feeling the peak of its impact.
>Get something 10-ish years old, decently well maintained, and have money set aside to pay for a mechanic when needed.
you wanna go a little older than 10 years to skip the planned obsolescence and nla parts bullshit with new cars.
>>
>>18597299
>but those aren't the old cars people lust after.
you can find part outs for the enthusiast cars still, you gotta go on forums and social media groups specifically for the car to find them.
>>
>>18595925

generally good advice but if you get something like a 90s to early 2010s corolla that's a non issue. stick with something with cheap parts that's easy to work on for your first self maintained car. buy the cool enthusiast sports car with hard to find parts later after you already know how to work on cars and have a daily driver.
we both also missed one of the most important pieces of advice with old cars:
look into parts costs and availability (whether its from stores, junkyards, local part-outs, etc) BEFORE you commit to a platform not after.
theres apps like row52 to search junkyard cars btw, but i think they're android only so you'll have to bust out bluestacks if you have an iphone.

Too bad the board seems so dead lately, with the same few unsavory name/avatar fags showing up every other thread, cause this is actually one of the most information-rich and helpful threads I've seen on /fa/ in a while. What happened to the interior threads? They were another highlight this year, had a similar "enthusiast" vibe. I guess the most obnoxious /fa/ggots don't really give a fuck about ancillary/adjacent topics. I guess it figures they'd just be here to argue about politics and pedantry like /fa/'s twitter. I enjoy making divisive shitposts as much as the next, but these sorts of threads are why I really come to /fa/, or 4chan in general. Good on ya, lads.

It does. I work for a competitor in the EV space and the EQS probably the most unreliable EV on the entire market, as pretty much anyone that has one wants to get something else or used to own it and now owns something else. Mercedes has really fumbled the ball with EVs.

>>

interestingly i saw some SFV bow-tie wearing retard on the socials who said the used/resale value of the EQS is among the worst he's ever seen.

I posted earlier about the S8/7-series V12's/E34 M5/E90 M3 I've owned but what I didn't mention is I bought an Audi Exclusive SQ8 etron tri-motor EV in goodwood green a couple years back.

Of the 2 years I owned it - it spent 6 months of its life at the dealer with them trying to fix it.

It was so bad I convinced Audi to buy it back and put me in an RS3.

But fuck me was it a beautiful ride. Too bad it was total junk
>>
My friend has a 7 series BMW with the V12, he's servicing it himself since he's a motorbike mechanic. Parts are tricky to find he says, and anyway he blows all his money on, well, blow and booze, so i don't think the car is going anywhere soon. We shall see though, he might surprise me.

You can thank the EU for fucking up pedestrian safety guidelines in the early 2000's btw. They demanded the belt-line of cars be raised so the leading edge of a car wouldn't hit people's knees but what a thousand eggheads didn't realize is that raising the belt-line also meant cars had to become one metric ton heavier across the board on average which absolutely fucking negates the "high belt lines save knees" bullshit because the person being hit by a three ton vehicle and live hasn't been born yet and never will be because its not a damn evolutionary pressure.

Raising the belt-line of cars also made them ugly looking, making cars fat in the most literal sense possible.
