Casio makes a quartz retro sport watch, the MTPB145D-4VT. I think it's just at the 40mm sweet spot for most men and is probably your cheapest bet if you want a watch that looks classy while still being everyday capable.
If you want something a little more upmarket, there is the somewhat rare Seiko SUR523 which is Japan Only and will let you play with the strap options because it has the most conventional lug setup, making it the most versatile. However, because it's rare, you will be paying the most for it at $500. There are probably also vintage Seikos with pink dials floating around $200-$300 you could look for.
Another option is the Zodiac Sea Dragon, a Swiss Made quartz option, retro square design and really striking and playful, but this also makes it harder to dress up. They can usually be found around $300 if you want something uncommon and Swiss.
If you want an automatic, there is the Citizen Tsuyosa 37mm. Really classic looking, great proportions, great specs, plus it's automatic so you have that nerd cred even if it isn't as convenient as quartz.

Already posted my L here before but figured I’d dump an update since I’ve got some new thoughts on this whole clownshow. Last Christmas I got absolutely blackout drunk and impulse bought a Hamilton Chrono Quartz and honestly I still have no fucking clue what I even saw in this thing. Way too shiny, looks like some boomer office jewelry, absolutely not an everyday watch unless your daily routine is attending your second divorce hearing. And somehow the thing also turned out huge on my wrist, which makes even less sense considering I used to wear a Seiko Turtle and that never looked this ridiculously oversized. Then in mid April I washed my hands with cold water and the crystal instantly fogged up like some aliexpress shitter. Sent it in for warranty repair expecting the usual corpo runaround but Hamilton actually handled it surprisingly well. No arguments, no “user damage” bullshit, they just took it. And while the watch was shipping to them it completely fucking died too. Mentioned that in the service form, then later found out the hands were corroding, oil leaked out inside the movement, whole thing was basically internally rotting itself to death. Dial replaced, hands replaced, bunch of internal shit replaced too. Repair cost was apparently around half the price of the watch and Hamilton still did all of it for free. Originally I was ready to just throw this thing into a drawer and forget it existed but now after all this stupid bullshit I’ve somehow gotten attached to the damn thing lol.

What's on the wrist today gents?

Hi I don't know anything about watches, but I have taken an interest in wearing them. I found an old automatic watch going through some old stuff, probably hasn't been worn in a decade. It's an imitation of a brand watch. It loses ~30 seconds a day. I'm fairly active and move around a lot which makes it go, but all it takes is for me to sleep longer than 6 hours for it to stop and need a wind up.

Is it worth it to spend ~130 bucks to take it in for maintenance at a shop and have them tell me what it actually is under the imitation branding?

I also found other old watches in a box which might or might not be genuine, but those are quartz movement. Gonna have to replace the batteries.

Fell in love with Seiko 5 SRPG35K1 but I dont want automatic watch as daily wear. They are too thick and just not my cup of coffee.
Closest to it is Vaer C5 Solar but they only sell in US.
Hamilton Khaki Field is thin and mechanical but way out of my budget.
Citizen just gave up on field watches. They make those helicopter ones which I dont like or those with gay nipple crown. BM8180-03E are not available in Failurope anymore.

Timex is great. I just bought my ninth one today. IF you can hear them tick it's a feature not a bug in my book. It's never that loud unless you sleep in a dead silent room and every little thing keeps you up. And it's the cheaper ones that tick noticeably in my experience. That with the 100m WR and solar power won't be a loud ticker.

If you were going to do something obscene, then AP would probably push back, but these companies will absolutely modify a watch for you if you ask.
Engraving and gem-setting is relatively straightforward. Printing something on the dial or a different dial color is a trickier ask. A modification to the movement will cost a fortune; but as long as you're willing to pay, they'll do it.
It's not like Rolex, where they'll just say 'no'.

In terms of the value of the watch, a modification done in-house will not hurt it because it will show up in the watch's papers, and that's important to the provenance. That's the same reason that a Nautilus that's been iced-out by Patek is worth several times more than a Nautilus that's been iced-out by some jeweler in Miami, even if the value of the stones themselves is the same.

This red Super Seville Mini would be perfect but it's only 25mm which is far too small, and it doesn't have the Precisionist movement anyway.
But look at it. If that watch was 34-36mm with the smooth sweep I would pay the $550 they want for it right now. The should have offered the regular one in red and silver.

I have real watches but someday I might spend $1k on something like a Hamilton. Not that one though. It's cool but I find it too dressy and not very legible with the thin hands and indices to be a daily. But I like that kind of case at 38mm. That case with the Murph dial and hands, without patina and with good AR would be the ideal Hamilton for me. Although I like their older square and tank watches.

I accidentally put on one of my straps backwards like they sent one of my Seikos and someone here said it's a Japanese thing about offending or dishonoring someone's ancestors by presenting them with your unsightly keeper and possible overhang.
Anyway, it's awkward to put on after years of muscle memory of doing it correctly, but I kind of like wearing it like that now. Does anyone purposely put the buckle under the 6 with their straps?

If I don't want to be a collector, I just want a nice set of watches that covers me for all situations, what is the minimum number that I need? I know I shouldn't wear a big steel watch with a suit, and wearing a little gold watch with a t-shirt feels fussy.
Are there situations where either of those two hypothetical watches would be inappropriate?

Ideally, I'd never like to have to worry about buying a watch again, so what kind of money should I spend? My income is between 150k-200k USD per year.

Honest question, i'm new to watches. Was looking at some Casio / Seiko watches. I can find very similar style watches on AliExpress for 1/5th to 1/10th the price. Since i'm already not buying for the brand name, what are the drawbacks?

You will own a chinkshit watch. Honestly chinkshit has gotten insanely good at this point. Chinks are making $100-$200 dollar watches that Seiko would charge $600 for. Seiko used to mean value but everything's gone up like crazy these days.

Two watches is all you need: a casual watch and a formal watch.

For the casual watch, consider an Omega Speedmaster Professional 3572.50 or a Rolex Explorer 112470. Buy used. The Omega should cost you around 4000 dollars, the Rolex should cost you between 5 and 6000 dollars.

For the formal watch, you cannot go wrong with a Cartier Tank. If you're OK with steel, a Tank Must WSTA0041 will cost you between 3 and 4000 dollars.
If you want gold, you'll be spending over 10,000 dollars.

These are not the most interesting choices, they're actually quite middle-of-the-road, but they're very safe and no one will every say you've made bad choices.
