The AP Royal Oak is obscenely ugly. I don't see the appeal. Is this just some kind of Naked Emperor shit where Gerald Genta made it so everyone had to pretend it was amazing and now after generations of it being around people are just mindfucked into believing the mythos? Seriously, when Genta first showed it off everyone was disgusted and wondered if it was a joke. What happened? Now AP is marketing it to hiphop nogs and putting out faggy Swatch pocketwatch versions of it for jeets so any class it might have had is removed. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here.

>>18705976Casio makes a quartz retro sport watch, the MTPB145D-4VT. I think it's just at the 40mm sweet spot for most men and is probably your cheapest bet if you want a watch that looks classy while still being everyday capable. If you want something a little more upmarket, there is the somewhat rare Seiko SUR523 which is Japan Only and will let you play with the strap options because it has the most conventional lug setup, making it the most versatile. However, because it's rare, you will be paying the most for it at $500. There are probably also vintage Seikos with pink dials floating around $200-$300 you could look for.Another option is the Zodiac Sea Dragon, a Swiss Made quartz option, retro square design and really striking and playful, but this also makes it harder to dress up. They can usually be found around $300 if you want something uncommon and Swiss. If you want an automatic, there is the Citizen Tsuyosa 37mm. Really classic looking, great proportions, great specs, plus it's automatic so you have that nerd cred even if it isn't as convenient as quartz.
>>18705978>MTPB145D-4VTThat seiko is just so clean. I'll probably end up going with that or the citizen you mentioned. I couldnt find much info for the sea dragons but ima keep looking! thanks for suggestion

Already posted my L here before but figured I’d dump an update since I’ve got some new thoughts on this whole clownshow. Last Christmas I got absolutely blackout drunk and impulse bought a Hamilton Chrono Quartz and honestly I still have no fucking clue what I even saw in this thing. Way too shiny, looks like some boomer office jewelry, absolutely not an everyday watch unless your daily routine is attending your second divorce hearing. And somehow the thing also turned out huge on my wrist, which makes even less sense considering I used to wear a Seiko Turtle and that never looked this ridiculously oversized. Then in mid April I washed my hands with cold water and the crystal instantly fogged up like some aliexpress shitter. Sent it in for warranty repair expecting the usual corpo runaround but Hamilton actually handled it surprisingly well. No arguments, no “user damage” bullshit, they just took it. And while the watch was shipping to them it completely fucking died too. Mentioned that in the service form, then later found out the hands were corroding, oil leaked out inside the movement, whole thing was basically internally rotting itself to death. Dial replaced, hands replaced, bunch of internal shit replaced too. Repair cost was apparently around half the price of the watch and Hamilton still did all of it for free. Originally I was ready to just throw this thing into a drawer and forget it existed but now after all this stupid bullshit I’ve somehow gotten attached to the damn thing lol.
>>18706136You don't have to own a watch on the list to agree.Just like everything else in life (food, arts, architecture, people, civilizations...) there's a hierarchy in watchmaking, and these brands clearly sit at the top.Denying it like saying "Ethiopians and Indians are as good as Anglo-Saxons or Japanese".
>>18705989Mechanical Breils are mediocre ofc, but if you go quartz (btw the period when they peaked) you can find some really nice obscure gems.
>>18706065I thought about this claim for a minute and I think you're right. In all seriousness, think about it. Why does this watch specifically matter? It's the first TUDOR that pops into mind whenever the brand is mentioned. TUDOR has been known for 100 years by now of being the quite Literal entry point to Luxury watches. It's the gatekeeper, the price point-decider on what is considered Luxury. That's a huge thing, no matter how you look at it.Anything below TUDOR is considered "casual" and entry level, everything TUDOR and after is considered Luxury.-Not Longines-Not Oris-Not Nomos-Not Sinn-Not Christopher Ward-Not TAG HeuerHell, not even Grand Seiko, Omega or Breitling- THE gatekeeper to LUXURY is TUDOR, it has been established since 1926 and it will forever remain that way. If there's not Tudor, there's nothing keeping the floodgates closed and in check.Everyone (everyone) who's honest with you and knows about watches, if you ask them:>"Genuinely, what's the One ONE AND DONE watch for someone who simply wants a nice piece for Every single occasion but also wants to wear one everyday and Never have to think about watches again?"if you've been slightly into watches for more than a week, you will answer>"TUDOR"in Caps, firm and unshaken. Because it is the only answer. Not the only Correct answer, but the Only answer in general.
>>18706149It just dawned on me; Tudor is actually better than Rolex.Tudor is a master chronometer while Rolex is "superlative". What does that mean in practise? Rolex doesn't even do third party certification on them, instead they do their own testing and deem it "better".I'm so glad I went with my BB54, after getting it, I don't even think about Rolex. In a world where Rolex screams status, Tudor whispers taste. A Rolex is the billboard of success, but Tudor? It’s the secret handshake of those who know better. You pay less, yet get a sibling forged in the same fires—Swiss precision, timeless design, and none of the "look-at-me" hysteria. A Tudor is a poet's watch; a Rolex, a salesman’s pitch. Why spend double to impress strangers when you could spend less and impress yourself?

Of all my blacked out decision regrets, online purchases were not among them. Of course I never drank alone at home either. Good to know Hamilton takes care of their customers though. Despite my derogatory comments above, it's the one "expensive" (quotes because people here pretend $1k isn't a lot of money) Swiss watch brand I have any interest in someday owning anything from. It's not too big for you but it's definitely pushing it, as you admit. What's on the wrist today gents?
Hi I don't know anything about watches, but I have taken an interest in wearing them. I found an old automatic watch going through some old stuff, probably hasn't been worn in a decade. It's an imitation of a brand watch. It loses ~30 seconds a day. I'm fairly active and move around a lot which makes it go, but all it takes is for me to sleep longer than 6 hours for it to stop and need a wind up.Is it worth it to spend ~130 bucks to take it in for maintenance at a shop and have them tell me what it actually is under the imitation branding?I also found other old watches in a box which might or might not be genuine, but those are quartz movement. Gonna have to replace the batteries.

It's never that loud unless you sleep in a dead silent room and every little thing keeps you up. And it's the cheaper ones that tick noticeably in my experience. That with the 100m WR and solar power won't be a loud ticker.
>>18706972Those things are a fun novelty but I can't imagine liking it so much you'd spend AP money on such a non-traditional watch. There's no way that's anyone's daily wear. I'd regard such a man as quite the peculiar fellow. It does look like a bathroom scale. They never know what to do with the negative space on those things. Those have never looked good to me. Though that one does look kind of neat compared to others, it's probably insanely expensive and as you pointed out, looks like a scale.
>>18706970If it were a dark emerald green on silver it would be cool. And the blue is a bit light for me too. I also wish it were at least 2mm smaller for that shape. But my taste changes all the time. If I ever saw any of them for under $400 I'd probably just get it.

>>18707009>Wonder what that'd do to the value of such a timepiece. If the engraving was done by AP, it wouldn't hurt the value as much as if it was done by a third party. They are typically a little harder to sell, though.
>>18707014AP would probably do it for you if you were rich and black enough.
>>18707014Yeah, I was going to mention that it depended on the engraver, but "a fat bitch"? It would have to be a very classy "Rubenesque" type thing, not a trashy mudflap girl. I'm just thinking the Tom Green Slutmobile treatment. The point is, AP would not do any such thing, so it would surely hurt the watch unless someone like Banksy did it.
>>18707019>The point is, AP would not do any such thing,If you were going to do something obscene, then AP would probably push back, but these companies will absolutely modify a watch for you if you ask.Engraving and gem-setting is relatively straightforward. Printing something on the dial or a different dial color is a trickier ask. A modification to the movement will cost a fortune; but as long as you're willing to pay, they'll do it.It's not like Rolex, where they'll just say 'no'.In terms of the value of the watch, a modification done in-house will not hurt it because it will show up in the watch's papers, and that's important to the provenance. That's the same reason that a Nautilus that's been iced-out by Patek is worth several times more than a Nautilus that's been iced-out by some jeweler in Miami, even if the value of the stones themselves is the same.
>>18707023I know you want to keep pontificating about the brand you think so much of, but sorry, a "fat bitch", as the anon who suggested it envisions -since we were calling the watch a bathroom scale- would just never fly at any price. We're talking about a fat prostitute with a slutty outfit, nipples protruding, a mole on her nose and a cigarette with a curl of smoke from a Penthouse Magazine cartoon from the 80s or 90s here. Engraved on that watch. They would say no and probably add that you're free to have it engraved elsewhere.

Bought this beauty. Thoughts? Will be a daily. First real watch.
This red Super Seville Mini would be perfect but it's only 25mm which is far too small, and it doesn't have the Precisionist movement anyway. But look at it. If that watch was 34-36mm with the smooth sweep I would pay the $550 they want for it right now. The should have offered the regular one in red and silver.
>>18707032Yep. You win some, you lose some.
>>18707040That does look pretty nice, I wonder if it looks better or worse in person though.I've also seen a stainless steel one with a white/silver dial that looks pretty good. I think it was a limited edition or only sold in a certain place though which is odd.
>>18707038I have real watches but someday I might spend $1k on something like a Hamilton. Not that one though. It's cool but I find it too dressy and not very legible with the thin hands and indices to be a daily. But I like that kind of case at 38mm. That case with the Murph dial and hands, without patina and with good AR would be the ideal Hamilton for me. Although I like their older square and tank watches. At least your date is at 6. I accidentally put on one of my straps backwards like they sent one of my Seikos and someone here said it's a Japanese thing about offending or dishonoring someone's ancestors by presenting them with your unsightly keeper and possible overhang. Anyway, it's awkward to put on after years of muscle memory of doing it correctly, but I kind of like wearing it like that now. Does anyone purposely put the buckle under the 6 with their straps?
If I don't want to be a collector, I just want a nice set of watches that covers me for all situations, what is the minimum number that I need? I know I shouldn't wear a big steel watch with a suit, and wearing a little gold watch with a t-shirt feels fussy. Are there situations where either of those two hypothetical watches would be inappropriate?Ideally, I'd never like to have to worry about buying a watch again, so what kind of money should I spend? My income is between 150k-200k USD per year.
Honest question, i'm new to watches. Was looking at some Casio / Seiko watches. I can find very similar style watches on AliExpress for 1/5th to 1/10th the price. Since i'm already not buying for the brand name, what are the drawbacks?
>>18707112You will own a chinkshit watch. Honestly chinkshit has gotten insanely good at this point. Chinks are making $100-$200 dollar watches that Seiko would charge $600 for. Seiko used to mean value but everything's gone up like crazy these days.If you don't give a shit about other people judging you for having a chink watch from aliexpress, there is no reason not to just buy one of those. It's better than buying some mall watch anyway. I wouldn't buy a fake Casio though because Casios are already cheap enough that buying a fake Casio is really gay.>>18707106If you want to be covered in all situations just get 2 or 3 watches. A dress watch, a casual watch, and then some flex watch or a cheap $30 Casio for travel.
>>18707112They're probably shittier than the watches that aren't chink knock offs, like everything else and it's aliexpress version
whoreturdello.
>>18707106Two watches is all you need: a casual watch and a formal watch. For the casual watch, consider an Omega Speedmaster Professional 3572.50 or a Rolex Explorer 112470. Buy used. The Omega should cost you around 4000 dollars, the Rolex should cost you between 5 and 6000 dollars. For the formal watch, you cannot go wrong with a Cartier Tank. If you're OK with steel, a Tank Must WSTA0041 will cost you between 3 and 4000 dollars. If you want gold, you'll be spending over 10,000 dollars. These are not the most interesting choices, they're actually quite middle-of-the-road, but they're very safe and no one will every say you've made bad choices.
>>18707106Just get these Casios>Wearing it casuallyOh, that is all time classic>Wearing it with suitOh, he is taking different approach for luxury watches, what a based chad
>>18707137You can wear the Explorer in formal settings. It dresses up and down retardedly well.
>>18707158If you wear it at your Eton reunion, the Earl of Fagmingham will tell you that this is very gauche of you to wear a sportswatch with a formal attire.A real fashion faux pas.
>>18707106get 3; something sporty+casual, something a little more formal for work, and then something dressy for dressing up
