Is it possible to do a full-body workout at home with just dumbbells, or are gym machines more effective?

A friend of mine has a pair of 5kg dumbbells I can borrow, and I’d rather not pay for a gym membership.

I'm a novice btw

This is probably bait, but you're not going to get very far with 5kg dumbbells. However, get an adjustable set that goes up to 30/40/50kg and you'll be set for almost everything.

Obviously, at some point you're going to need big ass dumbbells though

Everybody wanna be a bodybuilder, but ain't nobody wanna lift no heavy ass dumbbells

You can't do much with 5kg dumbbells. You'd be better off getting gud at calesthenics instead. Chinups, pushups, etc

I wanna lift heavy ass dumbbells, I just can't
They inevitably become lightweight once I do

Any video tutorials you'd recommend?

You can train the whole body with dumbbells. But you need more weight than just 5kg

Try lifting them without yelling "LIGHTWEIGHT BABY" before, without the lightweight enchantment they should stay nice and heavy.

Yea, every exercise has dumbbell variations which is why extendable dumbbells were all the rage dhring COVID staycation time, 5kg is too little tho

Any kind of equipment generally works, but what matters is being able to maintain "progressive overload". That is to say, you need to be able to increase the weight you're lifting over time. As a beginner, you should be able to increase the weight or the reps every session. And you should be lifting with enough intensity that you can only physically do somewhere between 3 and 15 reps on each set. Choosing a weight that you can only physically do 5 reps of is a good general idea, but you'll still increase that weight every session. Go figure, lifting weights is really hard work.
A single pair of 5kg dumbbells won't be enough, you'll need something adjustable, preferably with very tiny increments. A gym membership ends up being more economical for most people, that's why we have them.

If you do join a gym, barbells are the best thing to focus on. Try a program like Starting Strength, Stronglifts 5x5 or Greyskull LP. My personal recommendation is Phrak's variant of Greyskull. Look up advice about form on the internet.

Pay for a membership, if you can't then go to your local park and do dips, pull ups and push ups.

YES absolutely.
You might need heavier weights but you can use big water bottles, bags of sand or soil, even large rocks.
>>75524932
this is good advice too, your body probably weighs more than those dumbbells, don't forget your push ups.
>>75527512
no they are just a weird meme. they are different but both just work things slightly differently. not better.
OP, here's a basic home workout I do;
pushups
squats
chin ups
roman chair from pull up bar/door frame.
dumbbellstuff;
curls
OHP's
floor press
floor flys
front raises
side raises
"start the lawn mower" (i can't remember what those ones are called but you lean forward and pull the weight up like you are yanking on the starter for a petrol lawn mower)
barbell OHP's with wide grip.
tell me if i missed something
