At one point someone thought it'd be smart to process it to a standard fit for human consumption and sell it as cheap, easy protein. As time went on, it became a signaller for a particular sort of lifestyle (health, BBing, athletics, and similar) and people began buying it to reflect that they do in fact do these things. Once enough people got on the bandwagon, new joiners to the lifestyle thought it was required for progress or optimization, and vendors seeing this trend upped the price. You can also see this with chicken wings. What was once a cut thrown away became a cheap thing to sell for two bucks a pound at a bar. Now people pay ten times that for 'bar food', ignoring or not knowing the fact that it was meant to be a cheap snack in a drinking hole, not some specialty ritual food for game day with the boys.

I maybe encountered a small handful of others who even knew anything about beyond “Arnold.” Now every faggot and his girlfriend are into it and on drugs and demanding ever more protein, so the cost of whey has skyrocketed. I used to be able to get 5lbs of decent tasting powder from bb.com for like $35, and they ran specials all the time. Now the same amount costs more than double.
