It's an Arctic Cooling 550RF 500W PSU from the early 2010s. 80 plus+ certified but not bronze rated. I was thinking if it'd be able to handle an SSD without overhearing issues? I plan on hooking up a 1TB SSD to it while also keeping my current 1TB HDD on.
>>102441189You need at least a platinum PSU to handle SSDs
>>102441189Are you being serious?
you can set the CPU fan louder so the PSU wont overhear any issues
>>102441239Yeah lol. I'm a boomer and built this PC ages ago so not sure if it can handle the new tech.
>>102441264There's nothing in an SSD that takes more power than a motor that spins magnetic disks. And there's nothing a bigger power supply will ever do that will make your temperatures go down. I can't imagine how you even came to this conclusion.
>>102441287>can't imagine how you even came to this conclusionBoomers can not fact check stuff on the internet. If his fishing buddy told him "you need 1000W for a ssd" then he will die defending that opinion and his friend's honor. There is nothing you can do.
>>102441287So what exactly strains a PSU the most? I see people installing units with crazy wattage numbers like 600W+. What parts necessitates that amount of power? Is it really mostly just the GPU?
>>102441189actually youll need to replace your computer LED fluid first
>>102441406Cpu and gpu mostlyGpu can go up to 300 or 400 watts alone, cpu between 50 and 80 watts depending on which oneI think
>>102441406CPU and GPU.Honestly people way overbuy either way.No one buying a 600w PSU expects to actually pull 600w. They get whatever is recommended.>>102441354>If his fishing buddy told him "you need 1000W for a ssd" then he will die defending that opinion and his friend's honor. Zoomers are just as easily impressed tbf
>>102441595Pretty sure what's recommended is aiming for 50%, which is where the unit is the most efficient.
>>102441643And your talking single digits of efficiency difference that will never make up for the fact you bought a more expensive unit.
>>102441705Higher wattage units are not always more expensive. Plus, it probably depends on how long you're gonna run the PSU; I've been using mine for 11 years now, so I'm sure that any higher initial investment at the time would have offset energy consumption by now.
>>102441406You must be a true boomer. Even back in 2008 750W was normal, rather than crazy.
>>102441763Maybe, I understand there is rational, even if it's very slight things, regardless you tell someone who doesn't know better, they aren't gonna question it, no matter the generation.
>>102441794750w was never normaleven in 2011 the general consensus for a mid-range system was like 500w, 750w was high-end and anything over was for sli
these guys make good stuff but they insist on adding meme fans to everything
>>102441189Bro, I've got a 105w 3800x, three spinning disks, two ssd's, a DVD burner and just got a gtx 1080. If I can run it all off of the old AF PSU in picrel that I got around 2007, you'll be fine. Get your shit together old man t. 47yo boomer
>>102441189>do i need to turbocharge my car if i plug something in the cigarette lighter?
>>102441891SLI/Crossfire was somewhat "normal" in those days, thougheverbeit. Regular PC shops back in those days had kilowatt PSUs.
>>102441570my 3700x pulls 100w
>>102443734Actual physical PC shops with a full range of products was more common somehow back then.Microcenter is otherwise the only place left for mostAlso I don't tent to confuse with what's available to "normal" as sales data always seems to contradict precived normality in the context of a hobby.Hang around enthusiast forums and it seems like everyone has a 4080 or 4090, but a 3060 is the top selling GPU on Amazon (still)
>>102444460Fair enough. We are still comparing eras where brick and mortar PC stores were more common (thus making the clueless boomers who want more watts more common).
