I would normally agree, but this is around the time we should be expecting a 5090/5080 announcement as shown by the past two reveal and release dates. Intel cpus are coming out next month as well. The time for buying was when the 4080 super was released, the time for waiting is now.

>The C drive is just the primary hard drive. If you are building a new modern PC it would most likely be the SSD you put in your motherboard's M2 slot.
This is correct right? Initially I planned on using my 2 tb drive from my old pc to transfer to my new pc that I’m building and making it my main drive/c drive. But I heard that it’s better to have windows installed on a drive that’s mostly empty and has no important files, so I’m thinking of buying a new hard drive to be my c drive that I will install windows on.
What’s a good size for this? Would 256 gb be enough? I’ll just have all my games and files be located on my 2 tb drive.

>>102512715
And we learned from the 40s series that the 4090 and 4080 is shit in terms of price:performance. It's going to be the same for the 50 series cards. 5090 and 5080 is going to be shit in perms of price:perf, the 5070 and 5060 might be okay. then you wait another year for the 5070 ti super for the best bang for the buck card. which is like 2 years of waiting

Want a high-end-ish mobo for my 5800X3D, and if danish store can't gacha pull the X570 Taichi Razer I ordered, I'll have to search for other mobos of equal qualities, currently have these on lookout:
(asus) ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero
ROG Strix X570-E Gaming
MSI MEG X570 Godlike
Other than finding on the nearby used markets or getting a lucky find for an equal on some other European store that delivers to Norway, been thinking of buying used off China
Current build reproduction: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/cM32gB
Been told that what I'm looking for is overkill, but... Nice things are nice, and I intend to run AM4 for a good decade more.
It's 04:30 AM, so I'll check back in the morning. Been using versus.com to compare, but if there's a better mobo comparison site out there, I'd like to know about it.
>>
Which of AMD and Nvidia are better for DX9 stuff and older?

>>
>>102512902
Dark Hero has boot issues requiring a full power cycle to clear like the rev1.0 x570 aorus master so I'd suggest you avoid that board
Honestly your best move would be to scalp the 5800x3d while its still in high demand and get a cheaper b650 board and a zen4 x3d cpu since those have 20% better performance

It's a good idea to stick to reliable benchmarks for accurate info rather than relying on possibly biased personal views. Take ray tracing, for instance; some folks rave about its significance, while others downplay it. The same goes for opinions on AMD drivers, which can vary widely. Plus, some people might argue that NVIDIA is superior because of its DLSS3 and frame generation, overlooking the fact that AMD has similar features too. Just ignore those who are overly pro-NVIDIA and resort to personal attacks instead.

theyre so hit and miss, i ran a 16gb A770 for a while, and it would work great for some stuff, and complete ass for other games, and it wasnt even directX related
GTA V, 4k max settings, easy 60-70fps, no problems
with one exception, if MSAA was on it shit the bed, cut framerate in half if not more, and a lot of games shared this issue
CS2 it ran stable but it was just on par with like an rtx 3050, it just wasnt performing as well as it could
and then oddball stuff, sometimes it would hold its own against a 3070? insurgency sandstorm and modded skyrim SE of all things, it would perform way over its intended market tier
if it did that in all games, perform like a 3070 that is, it would be a god tier card, but it would do that right alongside performing like a 3050 in other titles

also the LE cooler is hot as fuck, its the only gpu ive owned since fermi 2.0 that would hit over 95c with fans pointed at it
obviously thats more the fault of the cooler design but its also a power hungry card and had a low power floor, it would idle at 60w and 60c

it kinda sucks that the 800$ 4070ti super is somehow a good option in todays market
its the gap between the mid tier and high end in naming placement, but provides the best "value" in terms of its feature set and performance anyway because the lower tier cards are expensive and underwhelming and the higher end cards are extremely expensive and not that much better

like, damn
i remember buying my GTX 590 back in the day for $750 and thinking i was balling out with the top of the top end instead of getting a 560ti like everyone else for 240 buckaroos
i remember the discussions

Bros, I recently upgraded to a R5 5600 and an RX 7600.

Temps are an issue. I have 2 intakes, and 2 exhausts, and the CPU is running on a Wraith Spire (came with my original R5 1500x)

CPU temps while gaming are like 85-87 C, which isn't high as such, but the whole case seems to heat up, which leads me to think it's an airflow problem than a cooling one.

Should I just put in better/more fans or go and buy a CPU cooler? I'm a poor fag so the former is more enticing to me.

the AMD/intel stock coolers are notoriously bad. You can get a better cpu cooler + fans for about the same price as just adding more fans which won't really do much in terms of temps anyway, considering you already have 4 fans installed. I'm a sff-fag with only 2 exhaust fans and my cpu never goes above 65°C.
But it could also be that your case has inherently shitty airflow, can you post an image of it?

It's going to be cheaper because they'll be cutting corners and changing up clever design to make it cheaper to manufacture, which would in turn mean a loss of integrity to whatever you're buying. I have a 3080 and 1440p monitor, so I'm supposed to use DLDSR to increase the resolution to like 5k, then DLSS on quality is supposed to work to keep my fps somewhere reasonable?
Is the end result a better looking image AND better performance than running native, or better looking same performance?

>>
>>102515237
I would argue something that fits that bill would be portable media players, and audio equipment. That’s a whole other general on here, but chi-fi genuinely is at times better than or at least equal to the high end traditionally American or European brands.
Companies like Hifiman and Fiio hold up against the likes of Audeze and Astell & Kern very well. And at times offer better products for less money in terms of capability and quality.
>>
>>102515180
Not him. 5120x2880 would be plain DSR, doesn't need DLDSR. DLDSR is for non integer ratio downscaling. 1920p and 2160p are examples of DLDSR resolutions if you're starting from 1440p. DLDSR incurs a couple of FPS cost, whereas I don't think DSR does, or at least it's less.

>then DLSS on quality
There's no way you're running 2880p with DLSS Quality in anything remotely demanding. That's substantially more pixels than 4K, which is 2160p. You'd probably start with DLSS Performance if you're targeting 2880p, which will have an input of quarter resolution, so 1440p input. Of course the input reconstructed to a higher resolution will always be better than the input resolution itself.

When I've used DLDSR, it's mostly been either 1920p or 2160p. Games don't have seem to have problems at those resolutions, e.g., with the UI. Often I'll use 4K as the target res. The image quality of 4K DLSS Performance > 1440p DLSS Quality at similar performance most of the time. With a 3080 if you're playing slightly older games, you can hit 4K DLAA, Quality, or Balanced pretty often if you're looking under 100 FPS. For newer games, even Performance will be unlikely unless you're also optimizing settings

Again this gets into iemg territory, but something like moondrop starfields a couple years ago weren’t some flashy fashion item picked up by techtubers. They were discovered by audio hobbyists, and pushed into the mainstream in the audio community because as a product they were genuinely that good.
They came out as cheap, really good sounding iems that competed against iems that cost hundreds of dollars more at the time.

It’s like if one day one of the Chinese GPU manufacturers dropped a card that performed like a 4070, but cost $250.
What that would do is inspire the previously dominant companies to drop prices or increase features, and open the floodgates for other Chinese gpu manufacturers to cut out their slice of a now disjointed market.
That’s what cheap chi-fi did over the last few years. Now there’s a bunch of them, a lot of which are mainstream for all markets, and started getting companies like Sony, Bose, AKG, sennheiser, beyerdyanmic, etc to start looking at how they can innovate with their products to compete in that market. Prices went down, new items came out that were more appealing and competed with the chi-fi. It’s why sennheiser did all those massdrop collaborations, cheaper products tailored towards the same market that the chi-fi brands went after.

That’s what china did well in tech recently. I don’t write them off entirely for being able to do the same for other markets. It’s more a matter of has a product been discovered, mass produced and marketed, more than has it been made yet.

air is going to have a hard time moving through those tiny gills on the side. Even a cheapo boomerbox with ventilated front covers/aluminium mesh will have significantly better air flow. But if the case itself is made of aluminium then it's par for the course if it heats up, because that's how it dissipates heat.
>>
>>102515353
They’re on both, the cpu and the motherboard will have separate usb controllers. The motherboard one will work through the chipset.
Not 100% sure how you’d test which is which? You might be able to figure it out by disabling chipset features entirely, no pcie slots after 1, no sata, no audio, and in turn no USB, leaving the only functional ports as the ones connected to the cpu.
And if none of your usb ports work then, it’s the cpu ones that are done for.

Though a cheaper solution if you need usb ports back and something’s wrong with your current ones is just to get a pcie usb card with its own usb controller.

If it was distinctly just the front panel I would be looking at the connectors physically first, especially if it’s the type C
USB 3.0 headers are relatively fragile with a fucking annoying stiff cable plugging into them, one damaged pin would cause issues. And the type C header is a similar story, one cracked solder joint on its seating and it could have similar issues.

No, they’re not smart or anything. If you disabled the chipset usb controller, any ports it controls will stop working entirely. And adding a usb controller won’t change that, a usb controller card only runs the ports it has onboard.
There are ones that have front panel usb 3.0 and type C though, if you just want your front panel to work normally.
This is cheaper than replacing a motherboard

Should be a bios setting to enable or disable certain chipset features and USB, that will depend on the motherboard though.
My old evga z590 dark had options to do all that stuff in the name of power saving because of the type of board it is, but not every board will have that ability.

Top tier: For production or "no budget" rigs
SN850(X), 990Pro, P5+, NM790, most other 128L+ TLC E18 drives
These models can saturate the PCIe4x4 bus under sequential load. They won't load your games any faster but can be invaluable for write-intensive workloads. The main difference between them will be in how long they can sustain that 7GB/s+ write speed. If that's something that matters for your use-case then check detailed reviews and testing. Consider PCIe 5 as well.
Mid tier: For mid-high range gaming or low-IO workstation tasks
SN770, SN580, MP44, FX900, MP600, 3D TLC drives with weaker controllers eg. E16, E21T
These typically have sequential R/W speeds in the 5GB/s region. Some feature onboard DRAM with older/cheaper controllers while some use HMB. Currently WD's HMB implementation seems to be the best with the SN770 being almost as fast as the top tier in sustained sequential. Some will be 1st gen PCIe 4 drives being sold at a discount (eg. MP600, Aorus Gen4, Rocket 4).

As long as the cap you replace it with is of equal (physical) size or more you can replace it. The real issue is how much damage the burn did to the layer, otherwise you'll be scraping off a lot that layer and potentially ripping off the other components.

you can do lots of advanced graphical features that older versions cant do. a game like bg3 wouldnt be possible without dx11 or vulkan.
>>
>>102517668
No. Get a 12TB HDD and use that as storage. Copy the files to a faster and smaller (cheaper too) SSD if you want to play those games.
It's what I used to do before I made my server NAS.
>>
>>102514756
>>102514692
How many cores do modern games use?
>>
>>102517668
Sure. They're all using (roughly) the same components as their smaller versions. Once again for a game drive you don't need the TotL 7GB/s models because games just can't take advantage of them. Hell, 99.9% of games load the same on SATA as NVMe. Furthermore, as a secondary drive you don't need to worry about NAND endurance so QLC models are viable if you're strapped for cash.

>>102517688
>Is it worth buying the heatsink versions?
If your motherboard doesn't have a heatsink for the slot you're going to use, sure. Just don't pay over the odds for it - there's generic sinks, that work just as well, for $10 on Amazon.

>Are Sata SSDs worth using any more?
If you're out of NVMe slots I guess? There's no price difference these days so you might as well get NVMe just in case DirectStorage etc. ever take off.
>>
>>102517741
Varies on the game. Not all DX11 or DX12 games share the same DX feature level or use the same compression techniques. Prime example is how Cyberpunk 2077 is DX12_2 (DX12 Ultimate) & uses Oodle so it can do pathtracing and utilize all your CPU cores for decompresion while something like Gears 5 is DX12_1 (regular DX12) and is missing raytracing, mesh shaders, variable rate shading, etc.

>>
>>102517780
Why are there so many modern games using DX9 or DX11 and not DX12_2?
>>
>>102517863
Modern games are definitely not DX9 anymore.
Also because more programmers know how to work with DX11 than DX12 or Vulkan. Older API has more documentation & experience than newer APIs. Same reason why everything on Linux is more OpenGL than Vulkan.
>>
>>102517878

QRD on this? Is it better than DX12?

Same low level principles as DX12 but different execution and its open source. It's up to the developer to make it better or worse.

yo i hate being that guy but I wanted to ask because I'm not getting any traction anywhere else.

So I have a recent pre-built I acquired with an MSI Pro Z790-P WIFI motherboard in it. I updated drivers as per instructions I received b/c of the whole Intel 13/14 Gen Processor debacle. Part of these steps said to make sure XMP was enabled in Bios.

I got the correct bios installed and everything (newest, non-beta version for my MB) I set the XMP to be enabled to Profile 1 (from [DISABLED]), and I saw that there were a couple of "Clock" and "Offset" options that were being enabled as I was exiting out of the BIOS. Ofc, I clicked "Yes" to exit, b/c I saw that XMP was now set to Profile 1.

That being said, now when I'm running my PC, even if I'm not gaming, even if I set G-Helper to run in Silent mode, it sounds like the PC is low-key going to take off. It's quieter than my gaming laptops (2021 Zephyrus G14 and 2023 Zephyrus M16), and the highest temp I see is I think CPU at 76°C when doing intense gaming but still... should I be concerned? (HWinfo)

Is there a way to tune down the fans using G Helper to get something a little quieter while still getting decent gaming experience? Or do I need to screw around in BIOS more. When I try to do fans + Power option, it says like "Custom power curves not allowed on this model"

For reference, the Advanced Power options/Boost is set to "Efficient Aggressive" in G-Helper, which was something I'm used to setting it to because of the finnicky behavior of the Zephyrus Laptop line, and I uninstalled the power advantage app.

Looking for advice, and would like the option to cycle down the excess power when I'm not gaming or playing something simpler like Brawlhalla. Thanks in advance.
>>
>>102518073
just go to bios and set max fan speed 10% less

Can someone explain why certain Ryzen CPUs are great for gaming, but not good for productivity? Like if I got a 7800x3d, why would it only be good for gaming, but not also be great for productivity, or vice versa?

Granted I'm not playing multiple instances of Crisis while editing videos and rendering in Blender, but why can't it be best of both worlds? Do the multi cores really matter that much, or is there something I'm missing?

7800X3D is single ccx, moar cores are multi ccx. there's a latency penalty talking between ccx.

processing or rendering raw, non-optimized assets containing millions of polygons in an editor requires much more power than optimized art assets in a game.

That being said, the recent raw power of most PCs means that game devs are getting lazier and lazier with fucking optimization, hence why every game is 150GB these days.

So what precautions should i take for PC building?
I know that you need either an anti static strap or a piece of metal.
Does standing on a carpet increases chances of static?
>>
>>102518688
I dont think theres any recorded evidence of static electricity killing components

you might want to have a pc building video ready to go but the mobo manual should be enough to do it
>>
>>102518688
be prepared for it to be a process. no amount of preparation will prepare you for the speedbumps, so the quicker you get going, the quicker you'll run into the issues and can start troubleshooting them, the quicker you'll get off the ground and have a running computer.

Good luck, and remember, every obstacle is something to be overcome through perseverance. :))
>>
>>102518688
I built my PC in December. My room is carpeted and I was wearing wool socks and a wool sweater. If you're that worried about static electricity then just plug in your PSU, do not turn it on, and periodically touch. Make sure you skin makes contact with the metal. That way you won't build up any static electricity.
Also ALWAYS test your components before putting it in the case.
Lay your motherboard on the box it came with, put in your CPU, put in your CPU cooler, put in a single stick of RAM, and a GPU if your CPU doesn't have an iGPU. Plug everything in then jump the pins to turn it on. If it boots and posts then at least you know your components aren't dead on arrival. Then start building in your case. If it somehow doesn't turn on then you must've plugged in something wrong since you tested it before.
A lot of first time builders don't do this shit and they don't know how to troubleshoot the problem. It could be a defective part or a simple cable not being fixed.

What's acceptable temperature to run a cpu at?

is it at or lower than TjMAX?

I heard cpus are made to be able to run hot. Wouldn't this make most cooling solutions useless unless you're trying to OC? I mean if you can run it at 100% under TjMAX and that's all it takes.
>>
Can I use two different brands of ram even if they are the same speed?
>>
>>102520249
>is it at or lower than TjMAX?
TJmax is what the cpu will be allowed to get to and be considered within specification from the manufacturer (assuming the base clocks are held at that limit - if it runs slower now something is wrong). Anything below that is just a bonus to the end user for opportunistic boosting.
>>
>>102520319
You can, but shouldn't as there will be subtiming differences, possibly voltage differences and a host of other tertiary settings that go into ram so you will have to do stability testing.
