This is true. Your near vision will deteriorate naturally as you age (so you will probably need glasses when you get old (40+)) but laser eye surgery doesn't give you this problem.
What happens in many cases though is that patients do exchange perfect visual integrity, I mean no halos/starbursts/dryness and natural vision in low-light conditions, to a bunch of random problems which can't even be measured let alone cured. You're stuck with them for life.

To those who want to hear something that isn't larping:
I got the operation 1 year ago.
Dry eyes lasted for 2 weeks, for 3 days I fels like I had a bit of sand in my eyes. After it was fine.
Eyes get tired quicker if I spend +12hr in front of a screen, no issues spending 8hr a day tho; with glasses, I could spend 12hrs a day watching a screen no problem.
Before, couldn't drive at night confidently. Now I can, not perfect vision during the night, but much better than before.
When it comes to vision quality, same as if I was wearing glasses, but all of my vision instead of just in front unless I wore huge glasses, more on that I see line straight, whereas before I couldn't judge whether something was straight or not due to the curvature of the glasses.

The operation itself was bad, but with good results. In my case I lost consciousness due to being nervous, shortly after the operation. Pissed myself even.
The anesthesia didn't work for an eye, so it hurt when the corneal cut was performed, that was a bitch, after that the laser and re-folding of the flap do not hurt, it's just annoying: feels like someone pokes your eye with their finger and moves it around, doesn't hurt much aside from the cut.

Definitely recommand building up a tolerance to having your eyes messed with. I am guessing poking your own eye in front of a mirror with your finger (washed with soap beforehand), carefully, by touching the white area, would be enough to make the operation a breeze; I was afraid of using the antiseptic drops they give you 3 days before the operation so that should have been a sign the operation was going to be a bitch for me.

All in all, I give the operation a score of 9/11, would do again since the sheer improvement to my eyesight and being able to drive through the night without running over a kid was worth it.

I just want my peripheral vision back and I want to be able to put my eye right up against my telescope eyepiece, and not have to worry about cleaning specks and smudges and raindrops off my lenses twice a day. This makes some sense actually. It doesn't mean the surgery went wrong. It's just a tradeoff and a consequence of how our eyes work.

A young person with perfect eyesight can focus clearly at both infinity and at near objects. Let's say their focal range is 25cm to infinity.
As they age, they can still see clearly at infinity, but start to struggle to see nearby things. Their focal range has reduced. Maybe it's now 100cm to infinity.

Now let's imagine a young nearsighted person. Without wearing their glasses, they can't see the distance clearly but they can see nearby things very well. Better than people without nearsightedness. Their uncorrected focus range is maybe 10cm to 100cm.
When they wear their glasses, it becomes normal (25cm to infinity). This means that putting their glasses on actually makes it harder to see very nearby things, but since they're young they can power through it without nearby things.
As they age, they deal with presbyopia like anyone else. When wearing their distance glasses, their range might be 100cm to infinity. But they can just remove their glasses and instantly be able to see nearby things much better than a non-nearsighted person their age. Maybe 35cm to 100cm? Maybe they don't need reading glasses, or only need weaker ones, or only need them later. Their eyes have built-in reading glasses, if you like. Nearsightedness sucks, but this is a silver lining of it.

Now imagine someone who's used to doing this gets lasik. They can see clearly into the distance, great. But they no longer have built-in reading glasses and will need to use regular ones like everyone else 40+. If this wasn't explained to them they might well be upset about it.

I got bladeless lasik done 14 years ago, no problems. They used lasers to make the incision. No dry eyes, night vision isnt great but its better than needing glasses.

Honestly it's very hard to describe.
For me it's a bit like the edge-detection algorithm in my brain now gets a little distorted in low light conditions. Like, edges of objects are a bit blurry so it makes it harder to judge distances between objects.
When i stare directly at something, I can see it, just the edges of it are not sharp.
Strangely, its not as bad in yellowish warm dark light. Cooler whiter light sources cause a lot more blurring and halos.

I have -7.0 vision, but one of my greatest joys is reading uncorrected with the book 5 cm from my eyes, so I have doubts about getting irreversible surgery. I got Lasik nine years ago for $2200, still have 20/20 vision (am 40yo), glad I don't have to put contacts in every day just to function. Glad I don't have to deal with glasses at the fuck all. In fact, part of the reason I got it is contacts were starting to bother me, they got uncomfortable really quickly.

That guy absolutely pulverized his eye, and yet they were somehow still able to restore the flap and repair his eye.
Hope that never happens to me, but its heartening to know what's possible in terms of repair.

It would trigger the fuck out of me if my glasses weren't completely clear of any debris or smudges at all times and they were constantly a hindrance in my line of work.
One time I got a huge scratch down the middle of my supposed scratch proof lenses and had a conniption fit for a week while waiting for a replacement.
Can't do shit like falling asleep while watching a movie, or moving your head in awkward positions without the fear of your glasses getting obliterated.
You also cant do any activities that involve water without being blind or using some kind of terrible prescription goggles.
My eye surgery improved my mental well-being tenfold during my daily life.
