Why is this piece of shit so popular among linux normies? It's pretty much unusable without extensions, and the extensions are all glitchy, unpolished and tend to slow down the system
Linux in 2025 is kind of where anime was in 2018. Understand?
>>107179876i think its momentum from when kde was way worse than it is nownowdays every distro worth it's salt has a kde version and every new one uses kde as it's main
I like gnome, does what I need without getting in the way. I run Ubuntu with the dock turned off
>>107179876Press Super to to to overview. Type name of thing I need to open.Move windows around on screen. That is literally all you need to do. GNOME does that very fine without lots of bullshit cluttering your screen.
>>107179876the user interface is extremely simple, much simpler than windows start menu and system tray
>enable minimize button and Dash to Dock extensionMuch better now.
>>107179876Just werks Doesn't krash
>>107180774Nigga have you heard of PopOS? I think this is what you are looking for.
>>107181813What makes you say that
>>107179876Idk do you need more extensions than:- ddcutil brightness control- caffeine | required to bring the basic KDE functionality. You literally cannot watch movies fullscreen without this extension, because the machine will go to sleep. Triggers automatically like on KDE, but doesn't detect non-fullscreen media playback.- hot edge | sure hot corner is nice, but the apps are pinned to the bottom of the screen.- place status indicator | to launch the files app.- weather o'clock | weather near the clock where it should show up by default.- AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support. | How else will you have a steam icon on the bar?Optional:- Pipewire Settings | so that you can set a 128(2ms buffer down from 22ms)-256 sample buffer while gaming.Extensions which have issues:- Dash to dock. doesn't put running apps on top unless you unpin everything.- Day Progress, doesn't work.
>>107181874ddcutil contacts the monitor, I think KDE got DDC support before Windows 11(requires 3rd party app, macOS only support brightness for macOS approved monitors, also requires a 3rd party DDC app).
>>107181874>at least 6 extensionsThanks for proving the point?
>>107182401Yeah, but gnome just works compared to KDE.
>>107182408brick just works when you compare it to pcpc tends to crash, slows down, etcbricks just lays there reliablygnome is brick, it's reliable and fucking useless
>>107179876Most polished UI, that's whyIt's no small feat in the linux world where the vast majority of distros look like turds due to the sheer amatorism of their builders. So it's ironic that you need an actual company with a few hundred employed devs to actually deliver something more usable than the typical amateurish turd
>>107182550Idk man, it's usable and looks really nice.
>>107181874Most of that is insanely basic functionality, why do you need extensions you install from your fucking browser, that break every other update, for that stuff?
>>107179876Perhaps because normies can use it just fine. It is unusable to you for the same reasons that make you unable to handle most stuff that normies deal with just fine, like day to day life
>>107179876>Why is this piece of shit so popular?Ubuntu, Fedora Workstation and every Enterprise Distro ship it. GNOME has stable releases.>It's pretty much unusable without extensionsUse case??? No but, I can see why people hate it without a tray, desktop icons (eww), clipboard manager or a dock.>t.kde user
>>107182850Normies ca use it and chads with a job open the terminal.
>>107182834Honestly only some of them break. And that's every Fedora(GNOME) version update. Some of them work even during Beta, but I don't update during Fedora open beta period.
>>107182980>Honestly only some of them break. If an extension dev can't keep up with the fedora release cycle, the extension isn't worth keeping. Also you don't have to worry about *le breaking extension* on LTS distros.
>>107179876just works
>>107181813>poop os>your options are a barely-maintained distro from 2022 or a DE in alpha
>>107183058Yeah, but Ubuntu breaks all the time.Random system components crash after updating from the base system all the time, ubuntu is kinda like Arch Linux+KDE.Sometimes there's an actual bug.The 24.04 LTS Installer itself crashes mid install if installer is updated by the user when prompted.RHEL/RockyLinux require a custom kernel/recompiling your own kernel to get dualshock 4 support not really worth it for end-consumer use.
>>107179876>It's pretty much unusable without extensionsthat's just not true, I removed all extensions with the release of GNOME 40 and can use it like before.
because it's the default and "linux normies" don't care about going out of the way to look for an alternative when the default does the job
>>107179876What do Linux fags do for gaming? Do they still keep a partition purely for windows? If you game regularly that must be annoying as shit
>>107183339
people often talk about bloat but then are perfectly fine with the giga bloated menus of kde and xfcegnome doesn't have the same problem. all i really need is just fast navigation between apps and windows and simple tiling to get shit done.
>>107183856what's up with the god damn top bar though?
>>107183435don't wine and derivates support most games nowadays?genuinely asking, I'm not a gaymer
>>107183926It doesn't get in the way, I think it's decent.
>>107179876maybe instead of whining online you should make your de look good and consistent for once?
>>107184122Hm... which launcher is that? Looks neat.
>>107179876>Why is this piece of shit so popular among linux normies?because it works and looks nice out of the box. Also, wtf glitch are you even talking about?
>>107184169https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/5489/search-light/https://flathub.org/en/apps/dev.mufeed.Wordbook
>>107180283KDE spent an entire year trying to make sure that people testing kde would ot find a bug in their first 10 minutes, and they failed. It's completely unusable.
>>107179876You have exposed yourself as a basic EOP by failing to distinguish between DE and WM architecture. Your complaint that the 'extensions are all glitchy' is a plebeian platitude that only someone who has not configured their compositor correctly would utter; it simply confirms you are still using a proprietary botnet that bottlenecks basic FOSS resources. Try Void Linux on a low-spec system and then come back to discuss actual bloat. Until then, kindly seethe.
>not>using>Slackware
>>107179876>Why is this piece of shit so popular among linux normies?Because it's forced by default in normie distrosSame reason why edge is "popular"
>>107179876>pretty much unusable without extensionsit do be like that
>>107184193ive been using it for a year and its my favorite DE so farespecially the clipboard+KDE connect
>>107179876it has the highest total utility of any gnu/linux desktopsad that it is true but so it is
>>107182834>that break every other updatethat's 100% intentional by the gnome devsonly enterprise drones and whipped cucks use gn*me with so many options around
>>107183435wine and associated apps have come a long waythe only thing you can't play is denuvo slop and league
>>107184307I liked KDE 3 and 54 and 6 are utter shit7+ will be gayland only which is a deal breaker
>>107179876i use mate because gnome 3 is awful
>>107184950wtf is gayland
>>107184992wayland, a compositing standard inherently and purposefully hostile to accessibility options in the name of "security" and if you bring it up they ban you as a "concern troll" because fuck people with bad eyes amirite
>>107185015doesnt the DE handle all that shit under the hood? what do you care what compositor they use idk what a compositor even does except that the DE uses it
>>107184950>7+ will be gayland onlyI didn't know that and just got KDE all set up on Slackware. I reckon I'll go ahead and move to XFCE now rather than wait around.THXHXIRS RUIN LITERALLY EVERYFUCKINGTHING
>>107185112KDE even put Xlibre on the list of packages to "avoid installing"https://community.kde.org/Distributions/Packaging_Recommendations#Packages_to_avoid_installing I just hope kwin_x11 will get forked by the lxqt folks eventually
>>107185155Well I just checked mine and it seems Slackware is still on KDE 5 so it will probably be years before it becomes a problem. That's plenty of time not to worry I reckon. I'll just slack for a while and maybe worry about it someday. Anything can happen between now and then so I'll just wait until something forces its hand upon my slack. Let's not get alarmed until we have to.
If only I could remove title bars in wayland, they take so much space.
>>107186461I'm pretty sure there's a wayland compositor that can do that>disable csd>turn ssd off, too
>>107179876>extensionsNormies doesn't use them. Gnome just works for them. If there are no features, there is nothing that could break.
>>107179876GNOME sucks, but I have used GNU/Linux long enough to assert that the alternatives are even worse. Unless you're willing to go the wm-only route, GNOME is the only sensible choice, the only one with a somewhat cohesive experience and the one with the least amount of observable bugs.KDE in particular is nasty. It looks impressive in screenshots and YouTube videos, but it's an unusable buggy mess in practice.
>>107181874Are you using Debian 10 in 2025?
